‎1900s photo album from Collinwood OH 175 snapshots: scruffy looking poodles family photos Lakewood school burning in 1908 etc.‎

‎Hardcover. Very Good. 12 x 7 leather boards with two large screws to keep in together some riubbing and suffing to binding but very good and solid with about 175 photos of a family probably associated in the R. J. Maple company and family of Collinwood OH a neighborhood on the east side of Cleveland a little north of Cleveland Heights. No family members are identified but there is a photo of people in front of the R. J. Maple storefront and front what we can tell there was a plumbing company by that name in Collinwood. There are also two real photo postcards of the Lakeview School in Collingwood one of which shows it on fire: in 1908 this fire was one of the worst school disasters in American history killing over 160 students and teachers. A motif running through this is the love of three scruffy looking poodles one of which has mastered the art of sitting up on its hind legs and begging. Photos of these dogs represent a small but significant portion of the total number of snapshots. hardcover‎

‎Shanghai: Brewer & Co. Booksellers 1902. Good overall. Three full back postcards of Shanghai published in Shanghai with blue images entitled "Honan Road Shanghai" "Tea House Native City Shanghai" and "Loong Hwa Pagoda near Shanghai". Brewer & Co are recorded in a 1904 edition of "The Directory and Chronicle for China ." as being located at 31 Nanking Road.<br /> <br /> The author who signs his postcards "D" is evidently a Shanghai photographer: he writes that he worked until 10 o'clock the previous night on the photographs but worries that there is something wrong with the plates. "There are a great many little holes in them -- some not so little. But I think there ought to be a few good results." There is a D. MacLennan listed as in the employ of Chinese Maritime Customs Service Index first appointed in July 1891 as a Watcher and retired in Apr 1928 as Chief Tide Surveyor and Harbour Master in Ningpo. Ancestry. <br /> <br /> Two are signed with the initial "D" the third signed "L. Ross". All are addressed to a Miss MacLennan at 2 addresses in Scotland: 11 Thirlestane Road Edinburgh and at Eglinton Wellington Road Nairn.<br /> <br /> 5 1/2 x 3 3/4" a few corner defects a diagonal crack in the Honan Road postcard extending a small distance into the image. Charles Simic 1938-2023 winner of the 1990 Pullitzer Prize in poetry and U. S. Poet Laureate for 2007-08 wrote moving surrealistic poetry based on his own experiences particularly his traumatic childhood in what was then Yugoslavia. This contemplative work interacts with the photographs it accompanies musing on Byzantine churches and the night sky. Linda Connor b. 1944 our photographer presents here a range of quietly lyrical shots including several of her signature photographs using historic glass plate negatives from the Lick Observatory. She has described them as epitomizing "a romantic notion that we have our time span and cultures here on Earth but there’s also this bigger space that we tend to forget."
