Now housed in an unusual and very attractive black protective box with Plexi protector the lid held in place by stiff panel decorated with an sepia photograph visible through a port. iv 248 pp. A rare first edition copy in fully original state and in the printer's delicate wrappers the text largely unopened and quite fine but for some very minor spotting or mellowing the wrappers with some soiling and wear but completely original and unsophisticated the spine largely worn. FIRST EDITION. VERY RARE IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS THIS COPY IN FULLY ORIGINAL STATE AND LARGELY UNOPENED. ARGUABLY THE FIRST DEFINITIVE MANUAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Marc-Antoine Gaudin's full and complete treatise on the Daguerréotype process was at the time the definitive manual on photography and covered virtually every aspect of making both Daguerréotype and the Calotype developed by Talbot. Includes the preparation of plates and their exposure processing printing on paper procedures for reproducing plates techniques for portraiture etc. etc. Marc-Antoine with his brother Alexis were important early pioneers in the business of photography and were responsible for numerous refinements. He held patents in both optics and chemistry and had one of the first photography shops in Paris. Marc-Antoine engaged in research while Alexis was in charge of commercial affairs. Oblong folio 250 x 360 mm. bound in green silk-covered boards embroidered with flowers and the work “Japan†on the upper cover in multiple colors fine endpapers decorated with Japanese watercolours. 50 leaves unpaginated. An especially fine copy complete the plates perfect with all tissue guards intact no spotting whatsoever the binding in lovely condition with just a touch of age evidence at the spine tips. RARE FIRST EDITION AND A beautiful early Japanese touring book produced for foreign visitors in order to promote Japanese tourism and featuring beautifully hand-tinted plates by Ogawa 1860-1929 Japan’s leading photographer of the period as well as printer and publisher. Oblong folio original decorated purple silk-covered boards with titles and decorations in gold embroidery fine silk-backed endpapers decorated with gold bound at the spine with white ribbon in Japanese style. 177 ff unpaginated Internally a very handsome copy with only very minor age toning the binding with some repair and restoration and showing some wear. Title-page with a bit of wear the plates all in very pleasing condition. VERY SCARCE and one of the earliest publications of it kind. A fine photographic touring book of Japan produced and published by the era’s leading photographer. Ogawa 1860-1929 was not only the most accomplished Japanese photographer of the period he was also a printer and publisher. He was a pioneer in photomechanical printing and photography in the Meiji era. In 1882 he moved to Boston where he took courses in portrait photography and the dry plate process. He also studied collotype printing at the Albert Type Company. Fuji bound together with purple ribbon at the spine fine decorated silk-backed endpapers. A lovely copy with only occasional mild spotting or mellowing. A beautiful early Japanese tourism book produced for English speaking visitors. Ogawa 1860-1929 was a leading photographer of the period as well as printer and publisher. He was a pioneer in photomechanical printing and photography in the Meiji era. In 1882 he moved to Boston where he took courses in portrait photography and the dry plate process. Sixth Plate Tintype of an Asian-American Posed in Front of a Bakery c. 1870s-1880s
American 1880. 3 � x 2 � inches. An uncommon early image of an Asian immigrant posed in front of a bakery. We find no record of a Blott St. or building besides the Blott block of Albion New York but the architecture and street numbers do not match the block in Albion making the locale a complete mystery. The tintype medium and general look suggest that the picture was taken in the 1870s or early 1880s when tintypes were most common which would also precede the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Some spotting to the image but still strong with good contrast wall-hanging-frame in tattered shape with one edge detached and wedged back in. Still an interesting image offering a scarce look into early Asian-American immigration. unknown
