[Photography] [Alaska] [Indigenous Peoples]
EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE ON A NOW-UNINHABITED ALEUTIAN ISLAND IN THE ALASKA TERRITORY

A collection of 16 black-and-white photographs circa 1900 of indigenous people from the remote island of Attu in the Alaska Territory which is now completely uninhabited. Among the photographs are images of women cultivating local vegetation and weaving baskets which is nearly a lost art.

On June 7 1942 six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese Northern Army landed without opposition on Attu the farthest westward island of Alaska's Aleutian archipelago. American authorities had previously evacuated about 880 Aleuts from villages elsewhere in the Aleutian Islands but Attu Village had not yet been evacuated. At the time the population was 45 native Aleuts. The 42 who survived the invasion were taken prisoner and 21 died during their imprisonment.

In the meantime Japanese forces established a base on Attu which American forces attacked eight months later. Bloody battles resulted in the deaths of thousands of soldiers on both sides. The Japanese were ultimately defeated and the U.S. set up an air base. After the war the Attu survivors were shipped to other Aleutian Islands or to mainland Alaska and forbidden from returning to their ancestral home. A United States Coast Guard Station was established but it closed in 2010 so no one now lives on Attu making it the largest uninhabited island that is part of the United States.

The individual who took the 16 black-and-white silver gelatin photographs in this collection is unknown but was likely a missionary. One photograph shows a family with a group of children all wearing the same type of striped sweater. The handwritten caption of the verso reads "A group of Aleuts after donning missionary clothing."

Four of the photographs show native women weaving baskets. Attu baskets are made from wild rye grass dyed and natural with a closed twined weave to make some of the most delicate baskets in the world. The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association began working with the few remaining Attu basket weavers in 2016 to host a class designed to train more teachers in the hopes that the Attu basket weaving style doesn't become extinct. Two of the photographs show Aleutian baskets one set in the Bowen Collection and the other in the Maker Collection. Other images in the collection show the Attu people drying salmon on racks for the winter and washing clothing by hand.

The silver gelatin prints measure 6 ½" x 4 ¾" and include handwritten captions in ink on the verso. All have the remnants of grey paper on the verso as if removed from a photographic album. A few have creases from prior folds not impacting the images.

In addition to the photographs included is a small hand-drawn map of a portion of the nearby Rat Islands and a printed map showing all of the Aleutian Islands. Early photographs of Attu particularly those showing native women weaving are scarce.

The photographs are from the estate of Pierre Odier 1940-2021 author educator and lecturer who traveled to remote places to document indigenous peoples. He is the author of The Rock A History of Alcatraz: The Fort/The Prison 1982.

Greg Wildrick [Vernacular photography] [Automobile]
Original vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicle ownership history of Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana 1955-1966
Peru Indiana: N.p. 1967. Vintage stringbound vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicular obsessions of one Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana who would ultimately kill four people in a motor vehicle accident and later die himself in the same manner while speeding. Approximately 150 black-and-white photographs and 50 color photographs with manuscript ink annotations captioning most of the images.

Manuscript ink annotations on the front board provide the album's title: "#1 / Our new cars etc. / Family Too." Additional annotations on the inside rear board note: "The bullshit contained in this so called albumn sic belongs to Greg E. Wildrick / 4 Holiday Drive / Peru Indiana is where I live if you don't know me. Call 472-2550 / If you don't call me forget it!!! / Book Finished March 5 1967 at 4:45 A.M."

The photographs in the album span roughly 1955 to 1966 compiled by Greg at the age of 19. In addition to many images of the family's muscle cars and trucks the album also contains quite a few shots of bicycles go-karts quarter midgets and speedboats often with family members posing happily nearby. Several images also capture vehicles in use.

Patently obsessed with cars and speed from a young age Wildrick would go on to work as a used car salesman in nearby Kokomo Indiana throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Wildrick's fanaticism also evidently extended to his leisure hours as the Kokomo Tribune notes Wildrick's involvement in multiple speeding violations during the same period.

One of the album's more striking photographs taken on December 19 1965 is a blurry color Polaroid of the speedometer of a 1966 Oldsmobile 442 going 110 miles per hour down US Highway 31. This same stretch of 31 would see Wildrick gravely injured and four others dead in a grisly two-car accident five years later in January of 1971. Sadly this would not be Wildrick's last serious accident as a similar collision on US Highway 35 would precipitate his own demise in 1986 at the age of 39.

A fascinating and thorough album capturing a young man's coming-of-age in a car-centric family and more broadly allowing a personal glimpse into the golden age of the automobile in postwar America.

12.75 x 12.25 inches. Photographs ranging from Near Fine to Very Good plus with approximately 18 photographs lightly scuffed cracked toned and edgeworn. Album Very Good plus with light edgewear and scuffing on the boards. N.p. unknown

[African American Interest] [Photography]
Archive of photographs and letters regarding a pair of African American twin child actors
Los Angeles: N.p. 1935. Archive of material regarding a pair of prospective African American child actors including four black and white photographs of the children four autograph letters signed from a "Madame Fay" variously addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith and an unnamed "Mr. Agent" and one typescript letter unsigned but seemingly from one of the Smiths responding to Fay's previous correspondence. Two photographs with the stamp of Adair's Studio at 4105 Central Avenue on the verso.

Fay's letters which identify the children as twins broadly discuss her hopes of securing acting representation for the twins facilitated by the Smiths who seem to have had some connections within the film industry. The letters also frankly address Fay's financial hardships noting "I don't expect much for myself in the start buy if I only know that I have a Dependance I will feel safer. I don’t think I shall ever be able to go into any ones kitchen and the lisence is so high for readings that unless I can’t find any other sorce of Deasent living I hardly know what to do" sic all. Fay's note about licenses for readings as well as her distinctive moniker suggests that she also worked as a medium or psychic in addition to having previously worked for the Smiths.

In her single letter to the unnamed agent Fay reiterates her desperation and states that she previously took the children to noted film and television comedy producer Hal Roach. She goes on to state her preference for the children working with a white agent and avoiding "the Central ave. agents". Central Avenue and 41st Street was the heart of African American life in Los Angeles in the early and mid-20th century a populous region commonly referred to as the "Black belt of the city" home to a rapidly growing African American community as well as numerous Black-owned enterprises.

As a whole the archive presents an interesting and emotive glimpse into life on the edges of Depression-era Hollywood as well as the numerous difficulties and limitations faced by African Americans in gaining entry into the film industry.

Photographs approximately 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Letters varying sizes. All materials generally Very Good plus lightly age-toned with some dampstaining to the letters. N.p. unknown
