(PHOTOGRAPHY: PACIFIC NORTHWEST)
Original Photograph Album; Life in the Northwest.
Port Townsend WA and others: N.p. ca. 1900. Original quarto album of full morocco measuring 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. There are 24 think leaves mounted on stubs with each leaf bearing four windows for photographs measuring 3 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches. Most of the leaves in the rear bear no photographs but in the front there are 64 inserted silver gelatin photographs. Of these 36 bear images of people places and activities in the Puget Sound/Port Townsend area The remainder are quotidian shots of England. A chief concern in this album is mining and likely they brought in some British miners which would explain the shots of England. No surnames are given so it is all a bit of a mystery but the pictures speak for themselves. Finding a mining album of the Northwest is a rather rare occasion. The photographs of interest are; Log Cabin; Ranch House with two women and an infant in front; the nanny appears to be a Native American; Ore Coming out of a Tunnel; Harry Smith Cabin with two gents relaxing on the front porch; Cook House a mess tent with many miners taking their meal; Bunk homes for the workers; Blacksmith shop and Ore Dump with two men pushing a cart of trailings down the hill; Swamp grass three foot high; Dumping ore from car; Road Gang at Dinner; Railroad Station near mountains; Road Makers to the Mine a posed group shot of 20 men; Sunset near Port Townsend; Mates at the Boiler Makers; A river near our mine faded. The rest are uncaptioned but we can see the same camp and people in the winter snow; 2 shots of a sailing vessel trying to come up the Columbia ; and seven photographs of Native Americans unposed. One of them seems to be wearing a mask or bag over his head. A fascinating album of a rough and tumble time in the Pacific Northwest. N.p. unknown

The building was erected in 1889 and was the tallest building in San Francisco at the time. In 1905 a fire destroyed the 4 story clock tower on the building. That dates this group of photos a being shot somewhere in the years between 1890 and 1905. All matted on mounts 14 x 1 inches. In the View from the Hills photograph we find at the bottom a manuscript stanza from a poem by Charles F. Holder. The Seal Rock image has a sun spot in the middle. A charming assemblage. N.p. unknown

(PHOTOGRAPHY: WASHINGTON)
Album of Original Photographs of the Highlights in the Life of Milton McGoldrick Race Car Driver and Timber Baron.
Spokane: N.p. 1911-1917. This intriguing album contains 76 original silver gelatin photographs dealing with all aspects of the life of Milton McGoldrick. The photographs are 7 1/2 x 5 and 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in the main but there are two groupings of very small photographs; the first shows 7 photographs of the McGoldrick logging operations with fine views of the log hauling trucks of the time and the second deals with Milton's departure to fight in WWI. Original oblong black cloth album. Excellent condition and with zero photographs having fallen out of their mounts. As the wealthy son of a timber magnate Milton McGoldrick was a bit of a playboy and has a passion for cars and car racing. 22 of the largest photographs in this album deal with his 1914 race car Buick #6 and his win at the 1915 Auto Races at the Spokane Fairgrounds and with his attempts at Nationals in a different car. Apparently he was married soon after as we find photographs of him and his wife traveling to California in a luxury roaster and flying a San Francisco banner. Soon after he became enlisted and spent time at Fort Lewis and was eventually shipped off to France. Arriving home in one piece was was able to partake in the downtown Spoke Victory parade. All shown herein. There is also an interesting photograph of the McGoldrick family manse at E. 547 Rockwood. Laid in are professional portraits of Milton and his wife.James P. McGoldrick born in 1859 started in the timber business in Minnesota. Seeing that most of the lumber he sold came from the Northwest he moved to Spokane in 1906 and bought a mill south of Gonzaga College east of downtown Spokane. The McGoldrick Lumber Co. eventually covered 60 acres along the Spokane River. Logs were stored on the river and milled lumber was dried in piles outdoors. The company added timber holdings around the region and the mill became one of Spokane’s largest employers. They were Spokane royalty with a grand estate to prove it. A son Milton featured in this album took over the mill and other businesses when his father died in 1939. The sprawling complex had suffered a number of fires over the years but on a hot August day in 1945 gusty winds fanned flames that leveled most of the plant before firefighters could make a stand. It threatened the Gonzaga football stadium and surrounding houses but 175 Navy sailors who were training at Gonzaga pitched in to stop it. A pair of 200-foot smokestacks crumbled in the heat. Milton and his son James II planned to rebuild but the war made new equipment hard to find and timber prices were dropping so the McGoldricks decided to shut down after 41 years of operation. Large Hand-colored Photograph; "1001-Granada. Puerta de Justicia. Facahada Poniente Alhambra.".
Spain: Illegible ca. 1890. Sight size of 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches with the original frame measuring 24 3/8 x 20 1/2 inches. Framed and glazed. Very good. The Gate of Justice is the largest of the entrances into the castle of Alhambra. The Arabic name for the gate was long believed to refer to Islamic justice or law - charia. But in fact this was a misinterpretation for a similar-sounding word and it has been shown that the translation should be Gate of the Esplanade. Its multiple arches are decorated with the Hand of Fatima Mohammed's daughter and the key to the Islamic paradise as well as a Virgin and Child placed there by the Catholic Monarchs to consecrate the gate for Christianity. (AMERICAN SOUTHWEST: PHOTOGRAPHY)
Original Photograph and Manuscript Album Describing Several Trips in the Region.
V.p.: N.p. 1964. A charming and nostalgic album of a couple's month stay in Santa Rita Arizona and detailing the trip there and back in great and fun detail. There are a total of 233 photographs mostly monochrome but a few are in color and virtually all of them measure 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches. In addition to the photographs there are extensive sometimes as long as a page manuscript notes concerning all phases of their trips written in a very engaging manner as well as tipped in brochures handmade maps and other ephemera they thought nice enough to keep. All the material is written and positioned on thick paper in a three-hole binder. Often 2 or 3 photographs on a page. Generally in very good condition but there was some kind of minor spill that made a few letters run and a couple of pages stuck together but still entirely legible. This album was assembled by Mr. & Mrs. Anderson. Her name was Lucille but as her husband was the photographer we never learn his name. She appears to be youngish so they were probably recently married. On the first leaf we read " Return to Arizona-1964. There was no question about it this time; warm weather is definitely better for controlling asthma. The only question was that of financing the project. We solved this by driving the DeSoto for another year." This is the start of an extensive travelogue wonderfully documented in words and pictures. On the way to Arizona they stopped in Kentucky for candy flyer bound in and then in Arkansas to hunt for diamonds in the Johnston Diamond Mine brochure bound in a a page long description of their fruitless hunt for diamonds. After driving through Texas they met up with friends in Sierra Vista AZ. These friends tok them to see the ruins of Quiburi this merited an inserted typed description of the visit and 6 photographs. The arrived at their destination; the Santa Rita Lodge in Madera Canyon Arizona original manuscript letter from the owner of the lodge bound in as well as a flyer. they arrived on Feb. 2nd 1964 and stayed for a month. During that month they took many day trips with one of the most interesting being that to Daniels Mine manuscript map drown by Mr. Anderson bound in. THey left a month later and returned home via Tiajuana San Diego Imperial Valley Joshua Tree Riverside; all of these stops with photographs and manuscript text. They arrived home in mid-March. One must remember that this was in 1964 when cars broke down constantly and desert travel was seen as slightly eccentric. It took no small amount of courage. The last picture is of their car laden with stones so badly it sagged he was something of a rock hound. A fun glimpse into the recent past N.p. unknown

(PHOTOGRAPHY: ALBUM)
The Honeymoon Album of U.C. Berkeley Professor John Nevison Force and Ethel Wickson.
Berkeley: N.P. 1912. A charming honeymoon album for this California couple. John Force was a professor of hygiene at UC Berkeley and his betrothed Ethel Wickson was the niece of famed UC Berkeley horticulturist E. J. Wickson. Octavo. 104 pp. Includes newspaper clippings several original photographs plus ephemeral 'souvenirs' from the trains on which they toured the country. Along with handwritten journal entries about their journey which began in Berkeley California and continued to Chicago Philadelphia New Jersey and more. They returned to Berkeley in October 1912. In contemporary flexible leather wrappers with the front cover bearing the embossed names of the couple and an image of the ship. Wear to edges and a horizontal tear to spine. A charming piece. The album opens up with with a printed engagement card; "Betrothed/Grace Ethel Wickson/John Nevison Force." It is followed by announcements from newspapers throughout the Bay Area about the upcoming wedding and a handwritten list of engagement presents received. Then we find an inserted printed wedding invitation for Sept. 12th 1912 and a few pages are devoted to that event along with descriptions of the cake and signature of the wedding officiator etc. After this begins the handwritten journal of their travels to the East Coast and their experiences along the way. The writer Ethel Wickson Force has added to her account of the trip by placing in numerous pieces of related ephemera including 16 original photographs telegrams numerous color railway trunk labels Southern Pacific Lehigh Valley Grand Trunk The North Western Line. Atlantic City Pennsylvania Lackawanna New York Central Burlington Route Denver and Rio Grande Western Pacific Feather River Route various tickets adverts for plays they went to see and some postcards of sights seen along the way. Ethel's writing is quite legible and she writes well of their various excursions to sights around the country. Apparently John Force was a bit of a skinflint as on the final days of their honeymoon the couple attended the XV International Congress on Hygiene and Demography tickets for both the Forces to this event are tipped in. A reception for this event basically a meeting of public health officials was held at the White House and a Presidential Invitation on stiff card and filled out for Dr. & Mrs. Force is included. (PHOTOGRAPHY: WESTERN)
Photograph Album of the Cameron Family.
N.p.: N.p. ca. 1920. Original album containing 44 photographs from late 19th century to early 20th century featuring members of the Cameron family including Hubert G. or Herbert G. Todd and Albert the compiler of this album. Photos trace the Cameron's family's life from Kansas to New Mexico then to El Paso and elsewhere in the West. Notably includes ca 1870s-1880s cartes-de-visite of family members with sewn borders the highlight being a 1.25 x 2 in. portrait identified as "Judge Cameron" with a Williams & Thomson Kansas City KS backmark.Herbert left home and went west first "punching" cows and breaking horses. His first wife was "Blanch Blanche Duncan." She was Todd Cameron's mother and died young at the age of 27. Herbert's second wife was Trinidad born in Mexico in 1896. She gave birth to Albert. She died in El Paso TX of tuberculosis. Many of the photos are Todd and Albert engaged in various activities. Todd later died in WWI. Other photos are of Herbert who worked in the northwest in mines the sawmills he ran a gas station in New Mexico and was a farmer in Bastrup County TX. In 1930 the census lists his occupation as "watchman" so he appears to have picked up whatever jobs he could to support his family. The annotations on the photos also indicate that Herbert lost his right hand in an accident with mining machinery so his prospects may have been limited.Family history holds that this family was related to Hugh Cameron who became known as the "Kansas Hermit." Since Hugh does not seem to have ever married it may well be one of his brothers. According to various biographies he was the third of six boys and two girls born to Allen and Catherine Frazier Cameron in New York state. Allen was born in Scotland but it is unclear whether Catherine was also or whether she was born in New York. We have been unable to locate the information on all of the siblings but the idea that one or more of them followed Hugh to Kansas is almost a certainty. We have also been unable to find a first name on "Judge Cameron" pictured in the album - presumably one of Hugh's brothers.Hugh Cameron 1826-1908 "The Kansas Hermit" was an abolitionist Civil War officer judge and founder and resident of Lawrence KS known for his eccentric behavior. Originally from upstate New York he was teaching math in Washington DC when he was fired for espousing his "radical" anti-slavery views so he decided to walk to Kansas to settle and have his voice and vote heard during the Border War period of the 1850s. Connections from Washington secured him an appointment as a territorial judge and he used his power to counteract the "Ruffians" promoting slavery in the state. When the Civil War broke out Cameron enlisted and received a commission as a first lieutenant in Co. F 2nd Kansas Cavalry and was promoted to captain by the end of the year. He was made lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry Union in February 1864 eventually being promoted to brevet brigadier general for meritorious service. After the war Cameron's eccentricities began to emerge. Despite his status as a former judge and military hero with connections in the federal government he began living in a hollowed out tree in Lawrence and eschewed the social norms of the time. One report holds that this was the result of being "spurned by Mary Phelps a Missouri woman." Lawrence Journal-World May 27 2001. The Kansas Hermit usually emerged for some spectacular purpose such as walking to Santa Fe NM to deliver a letter of apology to the people of the state for Kansas Sen. Edmund Ross casting the vote which prevented President Andrew Johnson from being convicted at his impeachment trial. He later said that the purpose of "burying himself in the woods" was to emulate the life of the prophets in the hope that he would receive "visions." N.p. unknown

(PHOTOGRAPHY ALBUM)
The American West and Tobacco Growing.
V.p.: N.p. ca. 1925. Vintage album bearing about 210 original silver gelatin photographs. Mounted with corners no glue. Size is generally 2 1/2 x 4 inches but with a number of larger photographs. This album was done by or for Miss Edith Harvey. She is featured in many of the photographs. Most if not all of the images are captioned in white ink. The album opens with about 70 photographs of her visit out West. These include numerous photographs of Yellowstone Yosemite Portland Seattle Lake Louise and Banff. At the end of this section we find more personal shot of Edith and many of these reflect agricultural interests. E.g; Edith sitting on five hundred bags of barley on the banks of the Sacramento; irrigating pumps at Lodi California; two fine shots of a California gold dredger; tractor and harvester at Linden California. Next is a series of professional photographs of places she had visited largely the same areas and a series of glued-in magazine photographs. Finally there is a large section at the rear with about 150 original photographs that show Edith in her home state of North Carolina. There is one shot of Edith and Mr & Mrs Albert Franics in front of a car with a license that dates it to 1924 at Bear Mountain Bridge when it was new. There are eight photographs of tobacco farming including two with a farmer taking his oad of leaf to market with a horse and buggy. There are ten photographs of cotton being picked and taken to market some with African-American subjects. There is one photograph entited "Darky Shack" that show an African-American familt n the porch of their house. Apparently Miss Harvey was quite the hardy soul; she drove herself she camped alone two photographs and she lived alone. There is some historical record of an Edith Harvey in North Carolina but she might have been a snowbird with a cottage in Florida three photographs. Flexible black leather album with black pages Some wear to binding and a section of loose pages easy to repair. A very interesting album. N.p. hardcover

(PHOTOGRAPHY: ROYAL) [SYLWANDER, Hermann Ludwig, photographer]
Private Photograph Album of the Swedish Royal Family.
Stockholm: Atelier Jaeger 1914. An exquisite photograph album of the Swedish Royal Family no doubt intended for their private use. Folio 11 x 14 inches. With eighteen leaves each bearing an original silver gelatin photograph of a member of the royal family. Each photograph with its own tissue guard. Original crocodile-patterned suede with a purple hue front cover with a crown and the year 1914 in gilt gilt board edges marlbed endpapers in a gold pattern all edges gilt. A wonderful piece of history luxuriously presented. The portraits are excellent. The King of Sweden at the time was Gustav V and it his his portrait that opens the album. He is dressed in full military regalia. The next portrait is of his wife Queen Victoria. Followed by the future Kind gustve VI Oscar Fredrik Wilhelm Olaf Gustaf Adolf though the Crown Prince at this date. His portrait is followed by theat of his wife Crown Princess Margaret of Connaught. She is dressed in traditional Swedish costume. Following the Crown Price and Princess are wonderful and natural photographs of their children; Gustaf Sigvard Ingrid and Bertil. Then follows photographs of the King's brothers Prince Oscar Carl August Bernadotte Prince Carl and Prince Eugen. There are three photographs of an obviously beloved niece but we have not been able to identify her. The last photograph is that of Queen Victoria of England.Given the blatant luxuriousness of this album and the fact that we can find no other copies of any of these images it seems logical to deem this a personal photograph album. Atelier Jeager were the photographers of choice for many royal families at this time. Johannes Jaeger was a successful photographer who in 1863 moved from Berlin to Stockholm to pursue professional photography. In 1865 he was appointed Royal Court Photographer. In 1890 Johannes Jaeger sold the studio to Valentin Wolfenstein. After Wolfenstein left the company in 1905 the new owner Albin Roosval employed Herman Sylwander as chief photographer. He took over the entire business in 1908 and ran it until his death 1948. It was during Sylwander's time that the studio focused on portrait photography. The year 1914 was a seminal one for King Gustav V. After the Liberals won a massive landslide in 1911 Gustav appointed Liberal leader Karl Staaff as Prime Minister. However during the runup to World War I the elites objected to Staaff's defense policy. In February 1914 a large crowd of farmers gathered at the royal palace and demanded that the country's defenses be strengthened. In his reply the so-called Courtyard Speech Gustav promised to strengthen the country's defenses. Staaff was outraged telling the king parliamentary rule called for the Crown to stay out of partisan politics. He was also angered that he had not been consulted in advance of the speech. However Gustav retorted that he had the right "communicate freely with the Swedish people." The Staaff government resigned in protest and Gustav appointed a civil servant government headed by Hjalmar Hammarskjöld father of Dag Hammarskjöld in its place. To date it is the last time that a Swedish king directly intervened in the governing of the country. He ruled until 1950 and is generally credited with keeping Sweden neutral for both World Wars. The target of the campaign was Shreveport the capital of Confederate Louisiana and the headquarters for the Army of the Trans-Mississippi.' . Hatzenbuhler Photography paperback
