"Delle" Knapp March 14 1860 – June 6 1909 was an American journalist author social activist environmentalist and educator who is today remembered largely for her relationship with Charlotte Perkins Gilman which was likely romantic. In her lifetime Knapp was known as a fixture of the turn-of-the-century San Francisco Bay Area literary scene. An outspoken writer who often addressed controversial topics in her columns for The San Francisco Call Knapp wrote on a wide range of subjects from livestock to the Annexation of Hawaii. Though often drawn to progressive causes like child labor and conservation Knapp also tended to espouse reactionary views as evidenced by her Anti-Chinese sentiments and criticisms of the women's suffrage movement. At a time when many American women were joining the movement to extend political and voting rights to women Knapp spoke in state senate hearings in New York expressing doubts about the benefits of suffrage to women and she allowed her speeches and letters on the topic to be used as propaganda by the anti-suffragism movement." from Wikipedia; 77p. pages; Pictured 5/27/26; Signed by Author . Samoylova, Anastasia and Walker Evans
Floridas
Germany: Steidl 2022. First edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/no dj. 200pp. 12.01 x 10.31 x 0.98 inches. Cloth over boards photo illustrations. Book is a stated first edition and the photographer/author has signed on the half-title page. Book has 144 illustrations is unmarked tight and bright. David Campany and Lauren Groff Mirror Venus have provided texts. Gift/collectible quality. From the book's verson: "A photo-dialogue on Florida past and present.

Sunshine state. Swampland paradise. Tourist aspiration. Real-estate racket. Refuge of excess. Political swing-state. Sub-tropical fever dream. With forms of nature and culture found nowhere else Florida is unique. It is also among the most elusive and misunderstood of places. Anastasia Samoylova born 1984 has photographed Florida on intensive road trips. Walker Evans 1903-75 photographed it over four decades. Twisting the visual clichés these two remarkably discerning observers convey Florida's dizzying combination of fantasy and reality.

Evans witnessed modern Florida emerging in the 1930s with its blend of cultures waves of tourism stark beauty and blatant vulgarity. He photographed there until the 1970s making Polaroids that still feel contemporary. Samoylova inherits what Evans saw coming. With intelligence and humor she picks her way through the seductions and disappointments of a place that symbolizes the contradictions of the United States today. In Floridas photographs by Samoylova and Evans are presented in parallel weaving past and present switching between black-and-white and color imagery all complemented by an essay from editor David Campany and a visionary short story by celebrated novelist and Florida resident Lauren Groff. Alaska Photography
World War II Alaska Military Life and Soldier Experience Photo Album Seward 1945
1945. Unidentified compiler photograph album of United States Army troops stationed near Seward Alaska circa 1945 documenting military life and operations in a strategic northern deployment during the closing period of World War II. The material provides primary visual evidence of troop activity infrastructure development and social life within a remote military environment supporting research into wartime logistics soldier experience and the role of Alaska in U.S. military defense during the conflict.

Photograph album containing 58 black and white silver gelatin prints most measuring approximately 3.5 x 6 inches depicting soldiers engaged in both formal and informal activities. Images include groups of men standing at attention with rifles constructing wooden buildings in rugged terrain and participating in daily routines within camp settings. A series of photographs documents a dance event for troops featuring a jazz band with music stands marked "153" alongside an emblem suggesting a possible connection to the 153rd Infantry Regiment which was stationed in Alaska during the period. Additional images show steamships including the S.S. Baranof S.S. Alaska S.S. Denali and S.S. Columbia navigating the Inside Passage and areas near Taku Glacier indicating transportation and supply routes. The album also contains a "memory leaves" section with handwritten notes and addresses from fellow servicemen reflecting interpersonal networks and efforts to maintain contact beyond deployment.

58 photographs mounted in an album with decorated leather covers featuring a hand-painted image of Alaskan sled dogs titled "The Malamute Limited." During World War II Alaska served as a critical military zone due to its geographic proximity to the Pacific theater with troop deployments focused on defense infrastructure and logistics in challenging environmental conditions. This album captures both operational and social dimensions of that presence including labor recreation and movement through the region. Light handling wear to album and photographs contents well-preserved; overall very good condition. A cohesive and detailed visual record of U.S. Army life in wartime Alaska. unknown

Women Employment Photography
Women's Labor History and Telephone Switchboard Operations in New York circa 1900 to 1958
1900. Telephone operator photo archive circa 1900 to 1958 documents women's labor within telephone exchange systems showing how urban communications depended on trained female operators seated at switchboards connecting calls handling information and maintaining the human infrastructure behind early and mid twentieth century telephone service. The material documents telephone communication labor through photographs of switchboard rooms operators wearing headsets plug boards supervisory presence and grouped clerical activity revealing how connection work operated in practice before automated dialing fully displaced manual exchange work. The archive supports research into women's wage labor communications history gendered office work New York telephone service and the disciplined workplace culture that positioned young women as the public voice and operational center of the telephone network.
The archive consists of six black-and-white photographs including five silver gelatin photographs and one early albumen photograph with images measuring from approximately 3.5 x 4.25 inches to 7 x 9 inches. The date range appears to extend from the early twentieth century to 1958 based on the later dated images. Several photographs show women seated in tight rows facing large switchboards wearing heavy headsets with horn mouthpieces and working among dense arrangements of cords and plugs. The early albumen photograph shows a row of women facing the switchboards while a female supervisor watches over the room indicating both the gendered hierarchy and procedural discipline of the exchange floor. One image shows an operator turning toward the camera with a plug in hand smiling while gesturing toward the board. Four smaller photographs dated 1958 show teams of women moving between boards and a small group with paperwork behind the operating area; pencil inscriptions on the versos identify the location as New York.
The photographs are valuable because they make visible the labor system behind telephone service: rows of operators standardized equipment supervisors paperwork and the coordinated manual routing of calls. They also record the gendered character of communications work in which women's voices posture speed and manner were made part of the service itself. Light handling wear minor edge wear and expected age toning; images remain crisp with equipment and personnel details clearly visible; overall very good. Strong women's labor and communications history archive documenting the human operation of telephone exchange systems across the first half of the twentieth century and into the postwar period. unknown
