Apartheid South Africa Photography
Apartheid Era South Africa and Southern Rhodesia Annotated Photo Album with 225 photographs with extensive manuscript captions by an English Physiotherapist 1954-1955
1954. English woman's photo album documenting a year of work and travel in Apartheid era South Africa and Southern Rhodesia in 1954-1955 during a time when white colonies were well established during the consolidation of apartheid. Compiled by an English woman attached to the Over-Seas League Torquay branch and employed for a year in physiotherapy the album moves from Union-Castle sea passage to Cape Town hotels mountain excursions resort and garden visits Rhodesian travel and repeated encounters with African people framed as "native" villages "war dances" and ethnographic spectacle. This album was assembled in the middle of the National Party's early apartheid decade after the Population Registration Act and Group Areas Act of 1950 the Bantu Authorities Act of 1951 the pass law consolidation of 1952 and the Bantu Education Act of 1953 had deepened racial classification territorial segregation labor control and state supervision of Black life while resistance accelerated through the 1952 Defiance Campaign and the 1955 Freedom Charter.
Photo archive of approximately 225 silver gelatin photographs and real photo or printed postcards various sizes South Africa and Southern Rhodesia 1954-1955. Housed in a 12.5" x 9.5" album with black leaves most cornered in with extensive white manuscript captions throughout. The compiler's route is legible page by page: "Off to South Africa. July 1st 1954" beside ship and shipmates; "First Views of Cape Town" "My Hotel in Sea Point" and "Going up Table Mountain"; urban views of Cape Town civic buildings and streets; scenic excursions to Table Bay the Hottentots Holland mountains Ceres and Oudtshoorn; "Coon Carnival on New Years Day" using outdated racialized language with Black performers in racially exaggerated costume makeup; Bulawayo and Southern Rhodesia pages naming hospitals villages roads and grave sites; "Native War Dances" "Bantu villages" "On the road to Pretoria" and "Zulus! In the Valley of a Thousand Hills" where African subjects are repeatedly isolated as performers or spectacle. Other leaves record Groote Constantia Rhodes Memorial Groote Schuur the Malay Quarter and a "Malay Wedding" Kruger National Park Durban Royal Natal National Park sugar plantation scenes Victoria Falls including aerial views brochures menus ship material and invitation ephemera all arranged in a clear chronological travel sequence. Cape Town one of the album's main settings was already a segregated city by the 1940s and 1950s making the compiler's easy movement through hotels gardens roads and viewpoints part of the racial ordering that structured urban South Africa.
The album plainly records colonial hierarchy as everyday practice rather than abstract policy. A white British woman could arrive by imperial shipping line enter professional placement through an elite exchange network rent rooms drive tour monuments to settler power such as Rhodes Memorial and traverse Cape Town Natal Pretoria Kruger and Rhodesia while African people appear in the album largely through the language of tribe village dance labor and spectacle. That contrast places the photographs inside the social order built by apartheid and older settler colonial rule. Light general wear to album scattered corner wear and handling to photographs and postcards some items loose captions clear and legible and photos mostly clean and clear. Overall very good condition. A substantial and thoroughly captioned record of British female travel inside the racial geography of apartheid era southern Africa. unknown

Caribbean; Travel Photography
Caribbean Travel Photo Album Recording Colonial Port Cities and Canal Zone Circulation from Jamaica to Panama 1910s-20s
1914. Caribbean photograph album likely compiled by a person connected to the Panama Canal Zone and the Caribbean documenting how steamship mobility port circulation and U.S. imperial presence linked Jamaica Venezuela Trinidad Barbados Cuba Puerto Rico the Bahamas Florida and Panama in the years after the canal opened. The felt cover lettered "PANAMA" and bearing the Seal of the Canal Zone places the album within the new travel geography created by U.S. control of the Canal Zone and the canal's 1914 opening when Panama became a central hinge between Atlantic and Pacific movement and a major point of contact between North American travelers and Caribbean port cities. Photos show passengers on steamers and docks markets and streets forts and government buildings and repeated encounters between white visitors and Afro Caribbean and mixed-heritage residents across multiple colonial and semi-colonial settings.

Panama Canal Zone travel photograph album. Caribbean and circum-Caribbean locations including Kingston Jamaica; La Guaira and Caracas Venezuela; Trinidad; Key West and Palm Beach Florida; Havana Cuba; Barbados; Panama City Balboa and Colón Panama; Nassau Bahamas; and San Juan Puerto Rico. Likely circa mid 1910s to early 1920s. Oblong felt-covered album measuring 6.5" x 11" with "PANAMA" stitched in large letters on the front cover and photographs pasted to grey leaves. Contains more than 160 black-and-white photographs most approximately 2.5 x 4.5 inches many with handwritten captions identifying locations activities and occasional names. The sequence opens in Kingston with captions including "Kingston JA" and "on the steamer" then moves through island and mainland stops; "Port of Spain Trinidad" "Market at Barbados" "Rapid Transit Barbados" "Havana Cuba" "San Juan Porto Rico" "Morro Castle" "Balboa" and "Colon R.P." Repeated figures especially a young college-aged woman and an older woman appear throughout. Notable images include a group of locals in shallow water at Barbados sifting for tossed coins from rowboats; a large crowd scene in San Juan gathered for what appears to be a public speech or civic event; battlements cannon and stone defenses in Havana; vernacular dwellings and children in impoverished conditions in Balboa; posed visitor photographs in what is labeled a "bull ring"; and numerous street dockside market and architectural views that juxtapose local populations with hotels public buildings ruins and newer urban construction.

The album's historical force comes from the way it captures the social landscape of Caribbean travel under early twentieth-century U.S. power. After 1914 the Canal Zone intensified Panama's role within a wider American maritime sphere while Caribbean travel increasingly moved through port infrastructures shaped by empire commerce military strategy and tourism; this album records that world at eye level with photographs of docks steamers fortifications government sites public squares and local street life rather than limiting themselves to family snapshots alone. At the same time the images preserve the unequal human encounters built into that system especially where visitors photograph Black children boatmen market crowds and working neighborhoods as part of the travel experience. Felt cover worn and soiled with losses at edges and stitching strain; leaves brittle with chipping and tears; photographs generally present and legible with silvering fading corner wear and occasional losses or lifting. Overall fair to good condition. A substantial early twentieth-century visual record of Canal Zone connected Caribbean travel with dense captioning and wide geographic reach from Jamaica and Barbados to Havana San Juan and Panama. unknown

George Fulmer Florida Commercial Photography
Florida Coast New Mid Century Tourism Infrastructure Commercial Photography Archive of 72 Photographs and Negatives circa 1950s
1950. American postwar economic growth and tourism throughout Clearwater Florida photographed by local photographer George Fulmer showing how the Sunbelt expansion operated through roadside motels downtown retail waterfront leisure automobile traffic and service businesses during the rapid growth of the 1950s. The photographs center on the commercial circulation that made Clearwater function as a visitor city spanning rate signage pitched to seasonal travelers motel courts arranged for car access beach parking filled with mid-century automobiles storefront streets where shoppers and pedestrians occupy the sidewalk and crowded dock scenes tied to marine recreation. Clearwater had developed as a resort community by the 1890s and local historical sources note that by 1957 it was known as the fastest growing city in America making this group a concentrated record of the urban and commercial expansion that turned Pinellas County's Gulf Coast into a major tourism economy.

Photo archive of 72 items including 38 silver gelatin photographs and 34 negatives ranging from 3" x 4" to 4" x 5" contained in 10 photo studio envelopes. Most negatives are duplicates of the print photographs while some are unique images. Clearwater Florida c. 1950s. Repeated and variant views show commercial properties and tourist infrastructure from multiple angles including motels with bold seasonal signage reading "SUMMER RATES $5.00 PER COUPLE FROM APRIL 15 TO NOV. 15" "20 ROOMS $4.00 DOUBLE Apr. 1st-Dec. 1" and "REASONABLE RATES 4 UNITS $5.00 DOUBLE APRIS-JUN." Several prints and negatives picture motel exteriors room interiors with twin beds and lamps a modernist multi-story lodging property with projecting sign and glass-fronted office and a low roadside restaurant or motel building beneath a large fish sign. Other images move into the wider tourist economy: downtown street scenes with McCrory's and Maas Brothers Television signage a storefront reading "Clearwater's American Casuals" a Parsons Paint Co. facade a Brookside Service Travel Gas station advertising regular gasoline at 26 cents and waterfront scenes with rows of parked cars palm-lined drives crowded piers and a dock packed with men women and children waiting or disembarking. The negatives preserve the same emphasis on repeated commercial views indicating studio production for advertising promotional or business use; the group also retains photo studio envelopes inscribed by George Fulmer.

These photographs place Clearwater within the broader postwar reordering of Florida's Gulf Coast where automobile ownership road travel beach recreation and commercial real estate development produced the built environment commonly identified with Sunbelt growth. Fulmer's images are strongest where they show the interdependence of businesses rather than isolated structures: lodging needed seasonal pricing and motor access downtown retail depended on pedestrian density and curbside traffic waterfront tourism required parking and dock circulation and roadside services converted through-travel into local spending. Visible edge wear light curling and routine handling marks to some prints and negatives; studio envelopes present. Overall good condition. A substantial visual record of how Clearwater's postwar visitor economy operated on the ground with concrete evidence of the businesses prices streets interiors and waterfront traffic that made tourism an urban system rather than a backdrop. unknown

African American Girls Education Photography
African American Schoolgirl Class Photo Archive 1950s
1950. African American Education Photo archive of African American schoolgirls in the 1950s. 15 silver gelatin print photos. Photos range in size from 3" x 3" to 4.25" x 3" all are black and white silver gelatin prints printed on Kodak Velox paper. These vernacular photos document jovial times at the end of the school year for a group of African American girls. It is around the beginning of June and the students are congregating outside of the school auditorium hugging and rejoicing before summer break sets in. This school seemed to be predominately Black but there also seem to be some white students photographed. The fashion of the students pictured suggests this was taken in the mid to late 1950s and the Kodak Velox paper was very popular at that time. Some of the students are wearing semi-formal clothing. There are also three group photos taken elsewhere which appear to depict a school field trip for younger African American students two of which have a photographers timestamp stating "Mar 1956." Location unclear. In very good condition overall. unknown

Black Vernacular Photography
African American Family Life and Community Vernacular Photography Archive 1928-1960
1928. African American vernacular photograph archive 1928-1960 documents Black family life social networks and everyday leisure across the decades spanning late Jim Crow segregation through the early Civil Rights era in Georgia. The archive provides sustained visual evidence of African American domestic stability mobility and self-representation during a period marked by systemic racial exclusion and legal segregation in the United States. Scenes include couples embracing restaurant gatherings birthday celebrations children at play studio portraiture and leisure travel including boating presenting a continuous record of Black life lived beyond institutional narratives of marginalization. One photograph from 1958 depicting a Black man embracing an elderly white woman on a residential porch introduces a rare visual instance of interracial intimacy within a period defined by rigid racial boundaries while images of school-aged children including those labeled "School Days" situate the archive within the expanding but unequal educational landscape for African Americans prior to and following Brown v. Board of Education.

Archive of 54 original vernacular photographs including silver gelatin and Kodacolor prints created between circa 1928 and 1960 with identified dates inscribed on twenty-four images including 1929 1930 1935 1939 1948 1950 1951 1953 and 1954. One photograph is captioned "Savannah Georgia in 1953" providing a geographic anchor within the segregated American South. The archive includes school portraits studio portraits informal domestic scenes outdoor images and urban settings. Several photographs bear inscriptions on the verso including "To Aunt Bea with love April 24 1959" indicating circulation within extended family networks. Notable images include a young Black man posed in a 1940s suit and fedora alongside U.S. Army khaki uniform elements during the World War II period a child on a tricycle with her father a mother with two children in a park a sleeping newborn and two girls posed before a sign reading "Real Leagues." Photograph sizes range from approximately 2 x 1.5 inches to 7 x 5 inches with most measuring around 4 x 2.5 inches. Taken together the archive offers a longitudinal visual record of African American life across three decades that saw the Great Migration World War II military service and the early Civil Rights Movement reshape Black social and political experience. The presence of military-associated imagery aligns with broader patterns of African American enlistment and postwar demands for civil rights while leisure scenes family gatherings and children's portraits document continuity of community formation under segregation. The inclusion of dated photographs enhances the archive's utility for reconstructing timelines of family and social history while inscriptions and regional references provide anchors for localized study. Light toning present in some images with occasional warping and minor edge cracking; most photographs remain sharp and legible. Overall very good. unknown

Portrait of a Female Doctor and Nurses in a Group of 6 Medical Professionals
Albumen portrait of a female doctor in a group of 6 medical professionals. 3.5" x 3" inches. Circa 1910. Albumen print. Photo shows six medical professionals three seated in front with three standing in back. The front row includes one male in doctor's white coat and black tie sitting front and center with the woman standing behind him also in white coat and tie. Beside him is a woman dressed in high collar and waistcoat not medical wear and a man in a black suit. The woman in the white coat is flanked by two nurses in uniforms one beaming happily the other more apprehensive. The subjects are photographed against a brick wall. The female doctor wears a strong proud expression fitting for a pioneer in her field. The postures and positions of the figures in a mixed-gender group of medical professionals indicates the hierarchical dynamics of the time with the female doctor standing instead of sitting subordinate to her male colleague. But her presence in the practice as a female doctor would have been extraordinary during the time. Seems to have been removed from an album due to paper on verso. Overall very good condition. unknown

Stereoview of an African American House Servant Holding a Tray
Albumen stereoview of an African American house servant holding a tray. 6" x 3 1/8". The subject of this photograph is an older African American woman dressed in housemaid attire. She holds a duster upright in one hand. With the other she balances a tray of indiscernible objects on her lap. There is a basket of various spools in the background. This is possibly from George Barnard's "South Carolina Views" series 1873-1880 a collection that focused on Black laborers in the Reconstruction South. Barnard is perhaps most famous for his photographic documentation of Civil War ruination and hardship most of which he captured while under General Sherman's command. This inch picture is in very good condition; it is an fascinating cultural artifact of African-American domestic workers in the postwar South. unknown

African American Photography
African American Studio Portraiture and Self-Presentation in the Interwar Period Wallet Photograph Archive ca. 1920s-1930s
1920. Archive of fourteen small-format studio portrait photographs depicting African American men women and children during the interwar period offering a focused visual record of self-representation dress and identity formation within Black communities in the era of segregation. Produced within commercial studio settings the portraits reflect the role of photography as a means of asserting dignity respectability and participation in modern visual culture at a time when mainstream representations of African Americans were limited and often distorted. The sitters appear in a range of composed poses including formally dressed men in suits and ties-some wearing brimmed hats associated with urban style and aspirational identity-and women presented with direct composed gazes emphasizing self-possession and presentation. Additional images include subjects in more casual or work attire indicating a spectrum of social and occupational identities while maintaining the shared conventions of studio portraiture. Two photographs of children extend the archive across generations underscoring the importance of photographic images within family and community networks.

Fourteen original photographs ca. 1920s-1930s primarily sepia-toned silver gelatin prints with one example featuring hand-colored background elements. Each photograph is small "wallet-size" ranging approximately from 1.25 x 1.25 inches to 2.5 x 1.25 inches. The images are tightly framed consistent with commercial studio production and feature neutral or lightly decorative backdrops. Several subjects appear in multiple poses suggesting a shared studio session or related photographic context. The format indicates intended use as personal keepsakes exchanged portraits or album inserts within kinship and social networks. General wear consistent with age and handling including creasing edge wear and surface abrasions; two images exhibit notable fading and reduced contrast. The remaining photographs retain clear detail and tonal range. Overall condition good. A cohesive vernacular archive documenting African American portrait practices and social identity in the early twentieth century. unknown

Women's Mobility Photography
Women's Mobility in Suffrage Times Photo Archive
Women's Mobility in Suffrage Times Photo Archive. Collection of 4 photographs of women on horses and bicycles; sizes range from 3" x 4" to 8" x 6.5" including a cabinet card with a photographer's mat measuring 8" x 10." In the age of women's suffrage means of travel and mobility were synonymous with social autonomy and self-sufficiency. Because it was considered progressive and unconventional suffragettes often rode horses to demonstrations. Similarly bicycles became a symbol of freedom and independence; early feminists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony famously declared that "woman is riding to suffrage on the bicycle." Their efforts were well worth it; today women make up the majority of licensed drivers in America. The feminists pictured here sport expressions of pride and determination as if they already know they are making history. Very good condition. unknown

African American Photography
African American Portraiture Tintype of Young Black Woman in Lace Collar Case Photograph Neff Patent 1856
1856. Neff Hamilton L. tintype portrait circa mid-1850s documents early photographic representation of an African American woman during the formative period of American vernacular portraiture when free Black individuals increasingly participated in studio photography as a means of self-presentation and social visibility. The image situates the sitter within mid-nineteenth-century photographic practice associated with Neff's patented tintype process which expanded access to portraiture beyond elite clientele. The subject's composed seated pose formal dress and direct presentation align with conventions of dignity and respectability that characterized Black studio portraiture in the antebellum and immediate pre-Civil War period.

Ninth plate tintype photograph measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 2 2/3 inches. The image depicts a young African American woman seated with arms crossed in her lap wearing a dress with a lace collar. The plate bears the stamp "Neff's Pat. Feb. 56" along the upper edge indicating production within the period following Hamilton L. Neff's 1856 patent associated with early tintype processes. The photograph is housed in a full wooden case with a gold velvet interior on the opposing side and a gold-toned metallic mat surrounding the image. The portrait is taken at midlevel and presents the sitter against a darkened field consistent with early tintype tonal characteristics.

Tintype photography introduced in the 1850s enabled more affordable and portable portrait production contributing to the broader inclusion of African American subjects in photographic archives during a period otherwise marked by limited formal representation. Portraits such as this one provide visual evidence of self-fashioning dress and studio conventions among Black sitters in the antebellum United States offering material for the study of race identity and visual culture. Image slightly dark with expected tonal depth; case intact with light wear; overall very good condition. unknown
