The first was published by Underwood & Underwood in New Jersey and features several men women and children picking cotton in Georgia. The caption reads "Cotton is King - Plantation Scene Georgia" and is copyrighted 1895. The second image is a color-printed stereoview showing seven African-American men posing with sugar cane. This image is captioned "Native Cane Grinders in Sunny Florida." It is no. 299 of a series though the maker is not identified. Original publisher's cloth stamped in gilt rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Corners lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on front fly leaf. Light foxing and toning heavier in some places. Most images clean though one or two with some light foxing at the edges. Very good. An early photographically illustrated book and the first such book printed on the African continent. The volume was made to commemorate the visit of Alfred Duke of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha one of Queen Victoria's sons. The book was designed to showcase the colony which had hitherto been viewed in a less than positive light by the general British public. Prince Alfred was well-received by the colonists in South Africa and the volume contains many positive facts about the colony's usefulness to the British Empire. The book includes seventeen images by photographer Joseph Kirkman who was active in South Africa from 1859 to 1870. Some of the images in this volume are photographs of drawings or other artwork but others do capture live scenes along the Prince's route including a grand portrait of the African chief Moshesh and his advisors. The chief is pictured seated in the center of the image dressed in a top hat and suit holding a cane. The man seated next to him glowers at the camera and is draped in an animal pelt and holds a spear. Four men all in Western dress stand arrayed behind them. The images taken from life during the Prince's progress are as follows: Untitled image on the titlepage showing several men next to a rail car full of large rocks. In 1860 Kirkman and Frederick York were employed by the government and the Harbour Board to photograph the tilting of the first truck of stone off the Breakwater by Prince Alfred. This is presumably an image from that scene. "Graham's Town from the West" "The Reception of the Prince by a Burgher Escort near Queenstown" "The Prince's Interview with the Tambookies" "Moshesh and His Counsellors" "The Prince and His First Wildebeeste" "The Prince's Travelling Equipage" Not in THE TRUTHFUL LENS. Thirty-One Albums of Original Prints of Photographs Representing Kent's Personal Archive of Images of His Excursions to Greenland Alaska Denmark Puerto Rico the American Southwest Monhegan Island of His Honeymoon in New Hampshire and of His Home Asgaard
Various Places 1960. Thirty-one 7.5" x 6" leatherette albums categorized and identified by spine labels captioned in ink in Kent's hand containing 1125 individual original matte and glossy black & white 7" x 5" gelatin silver prints. Slight surface variations characteristic of ferrotyping and some spotting scratches and other blemishes in the negatives are evident in the prints; some are printed slightly askew; some oxidation fading or other signs of the amateur processing is evident on occasion otherwise remarkably good. Until his death Rockwell Kent maintained this collection of thirty-one albums of prints of his own photographs as well as some photographs taken by others in his company on certain occasions all arranged identified and labeled according to locations and subjects. Apart from their categorization by placement in the notebooks some occasional prints are identified by Kent in ink or bear his stamp. Kent frequently recorded scenes people and settings via photographs during his voyages and travels many of which he utilized as reference material and are identifiable as such in the production of his illustrations prints and paintings made during and after his journeys. Kent made three trips to Greenland first in 1929 and then in 1931-2 and 1934-5 and photographs from these three trips constitute the largest single subject element in the archive. The subjects break down generally as follow: 1 Greenland. 16 albums including 549 images. 2 Asgaard. 8 albums including 293 images. 3 Alaska. 1 album including 46 images. 4 Monhegan Island. 2 albums including 84 images. 5 Arizona Colorado California. 1 album including 28 images. 6 Puerto Rico. 1 album including 51 images. 7 Denmark. 1 album including 43 images. 8 Hillsboro and Richmond. 1 album including 31 images. Although obviously best known for his book illustrations works on paper and paintings Kent was sufficiently renowned as a photographer during the 1930s that some of his photographs were reproduced in photogravure in a portfolio MODERN MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES 1 PICTORIALISTS published by the Galleon Press. While those photogravures turn up separately with some frequency - usually well outside of their original context in the portfolio - individual original prints from negatives of Kent's photographs are scarce. We note as reference the appearance of a single Greenland print also represented by a print in this archive and in the same format with Kent's ink rubber stamp on the verso: Swann Galleries 15 May 2008 Lot 341 $1300. Very good. <p>The Belgian photographer Pierre d'Harville b. 1939 is best known for his homoerotic images. He was the manager of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Charleroi.</p><p>Serving as a poetic preface the essay "Caresses par la Lumiere" explores the feelings of a nude male model as he is being photographed. The essay is by the Belgian writer and film director Nadine Monfils. Monfils b.1953 directed the film "Madame Edouard" 2004 and has written a series of detective novels based on her character Inspector Leon a policeman who knits.</p><p>Tels Quels founded in 1979 is an LGBT association formed by gays and Socialist militants. Under the leadership of Luc-Daniel Dupire Tels Quels organized the first Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of Brussels in 1981. In that same year the monthly news magazine Tels Quels was founded in an attempt to present a positive image of the gay life style.
