‎NEMEROV, Alexander (author); Diane ARBUS (photography)‎

‎Silent Dialogues: Diane Arbus & Howard Nemerov‎

‎San Francisco: Fraenkel Gallery 2015. First edition. A clean copy with no internal markings. 9.5 x 7.75 inches. 100 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original cloth; dust jacket. "Silent Dialogues by art historian Alexander Nemerov is a probing intimate reflection about photographer Diane Arbus the author's aunt and her brother Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Howard Nemerov the author's father. "I have no memories of Diane Arbus" begins Alexander Nemerov in the first of two meditative essays that comprise this book. "A Resemblance" examines Howard Nemerov's complicated responses to his sister's photography. "The School" focuses on a body of Arbus' work known as the Untitled series photographs made at residences for the mentally disabled between 1969 and 1971 in the last years of her life. Through their work the author explores the siblings' disparate and distinct sensibilities and in doing so uncovers signs of an unexpected aesthetic kinship. Illustrations complementing the essays include numerous examples of Arbus' photographs; paintings by artists as diverse as Pieter Brueghel Norman Rockwell Paul Feeley and Johannes Vermeer; and a selection of poems by Howard Nemerov chosen by his son" the publisher. ‎Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album of Mining and Engineering Activities in Peru and Ecuador‎

‎Various places in South America 1928. About very good. Sixty-six original photographs most 35. x 5.75 inches. Small oblong folio album string tied. Photos mounted directly to tan heavy card stock. Contemporary manuscript captions throughout and small return address label affixed to rear cover. A number of card leaves coming or fully detached. Occasional small corner chips and minor wear to photos. Interesting photo album containing over sixty-five original and vernacular images that document a work trip through Peru and Ecuador compiled by an American engineer likely named Breese Rosette of Alhambra California per an address label on the rear cover. He evidently traveled on behalf of the Frederick Snare Company a major U.S. civil engineering and construction firm that was responsible for myriad works in Latin America and major projects in New York such as the Triborough Whitestone and Verrazano Narrows Bridges. Rosette went to Snare-owned material sites such as a rock quarry near Callao and a cement plant in Lima and also visited various project locations where the company was engaged such as railroad construction sites and mines. In between times he traveled to major cities such as Lima Callao Quito and Guayaquil and he also documents his travel to work sites by train and by river boat. In all a fascinating and well-rounded album showing American industrial and engineering work in 1920s South America. unknown‎

‎1900s photo album from Collinwood OH 175 snapshots: scruffy looking poodles family photos Lakewood school burning in 1908 etc.‎

‎Hardcover. Very Good. 12 x 7 leather boards with two large screws to keep in together some riubbing and suffing to binding but very good and solid with about 175 photos of a family probably associated in the R. J. Maple company and family of Collinwood OH a neighborhood on the east side of Cleveland a little north of Cleveland Heights. No family members are identified but there is a photo of people in front of the R. J. Maple storefront and front what we can tell there was a plumbing company by that name in Collinwood. There are also two real photo postcards of the Lakeview School in Collingwood one of which shows it on fire: in 1908 this fire was one of the worst school disasters in American history killing over 160 students and teachers. A motif running through this is the love of three scruffy looking poodles one of which has mastered the art of sitting up on its hind legs and begging. Photos of these dogs represent a small but significant portion of the total number of snapshots. hardcover‎

‎American 1910. Tintype measuring 8 x 6 inches with an African-American portrait laminated at borders with a decorative frame with the insignia of the Prince Hall Masons. Some chips to lamination at corners very good. Very Good. An interesting portrait of an African-American man with a decorative masonic border bearing the distinctive shape of the Prince Hall Masons emblem. Prince Hall Freemasonry stands as the earliest officially recognized and consistently operational organization established by individuals of African descent. Its inception occurred on March 6 1775 when Prince Hall ca. 1748-1807 a proponent of abolition and a civil rights activist alongside fourteen other free black individuals underwent initiation into freemasonry. They established African Lodge No. 1 on July 3 1775. In 1784 a formal request for a charter was submitted to the Grand Lodge of England and upon approval African Lodge No. 1 was redesignated as African Lodge No. 459 in Boston Massachusetts. By the time this picture was taken there were numerous lodges making the exact location or identity of the sitter unknown. unknown‎

‎[Photography] Moore, F L; Fredericks, Charles D‎

‎Composite Photograph of 100 Portraits of Actresses c. 1860‎

‎Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1860. Carte de visite measuring 2 ¼ by 3 ½ inches on heavy cardstock. Wear to both photograph and mount overall very good to excellent. Though Dadaists are frequently credited with the invention of photomontage techniques involving combining multiple photographs into a single composite image have been around since at least the mid-Victorian era.1 These could be made by combining negatives or by combining prints and then re-photographing the result so that it looked seamless. Offered here is an example of early composite imagery published by F. L. Moore of Philadelphia consisting of portraits of women numbered 1–100. It seems to be a reproduction by Moore of an 1860s “theatrical portrait gallery†of actresses’ portraits produced by C. D. Fredericks & Co. of New York City; note that Moore is identified verso as an “Importer & Publisher of Cartes de Visite &c.†not a photographer. An interesting early example of photomanipulation.<br /> <br /> 1 Robert A. ‎[African-Americana – Music – Early Photography – African American Performers in Britain] WJ Wellstead and Son; Fisk Jubilee Sing‎

‎Carte-de-Visite Portrait of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in Hull during their First European Tour 1873–1874‎

‎Hull and Nuneaton: W. J. Wellsted & Son 1874. Carte de visite portrait measuring 2 ½ x 4 inches. Albumen photograph on original mount with Wellsted’s printed royal arms and “By Special Invitation†crest advertising the firm as “Photographers of the Prince & Princess of Wales†with addresses at 3 Paragon St. Hull and Church Lane Nuneaton. Excellent. A scarce provincial English studio portrait of the Fisk Jubilee Singers taken during their early British tours when they visited Hull in 1873 and 1874. A closely related photograph from the same Hull sitting is preserved at Hull Museums; that example includes the troupe’s manager George White along with an unidentified woman. The present image represents a variant from the same series consistent with multiple negatives or slightly altered arrangements made for local sale to concert attendees.<br /> <br /> The photograph aligns with the group’s well-documented appearances in Hull during their first English tour. They arrived on Friday August 1st 1873 and performed that evening at Hope Street Congregational Church where contemporary accounts describe the building as filled to capacity. The concert reportedly raised over fifty pounds with a second performance following on Sunday afternoon. During this same visit the group was heard singing outdoors near King William’s monument bringing their repertoire beyond the church interior and into the civic heart of the town. They returned to Hull on December 5th 1873 this time appearing at Hengler’s Circus a larger public venue. George White the group’s manager later remarked that Hull was a place where they had earned funds “beyond their expenses.â€1 On the Sunday of that December visit seven female members and one male singer accompanied by White attended a gathering of roughly three thousand schoolchildren at the Artillery Barracks where a collection of just over £17 was taken for the Jubilee fund. The following day they visited Wilberforce House at the invitation of merchant Thomas Massam singing in the birthplace room of William Wilberforce and performing both “John Brown’s Body†and “God Save the Queen†linking their American antislavery origins with Britain’s own abolitionist legacy.<br /> <br /> At some point in their visits the group was photographed at the W.J. Wellstead studio with the images likely produced to sell during their performances. Besides the variant copy at the Hull Museum we find no other examples of this image. <br /> <br /> 1 “The Fisk Jubilee Singers in Hull and East Yorkshire†African Stories in Hull and East Yorkshire https://www.africansinyorkshireproject.com/fisk-jubilee-singers-part-one.html accessed March 5 2026. ‎[Early Photography – Novelty]‎

‎“This Poor Man Was Talked to Death.â€‎

‎N.p. 1870. Carte-de-visite novelty card. Albumen print illustration mounted on standard CDV card approximately 2.5 x 4 inches. Very good condition with light toning and minor surface wear. A macabre humorous novelty carte-de-visite showing a coffin containing the caricatured head of a deceased man beneath the caption “THIS POOR MAN WAS TALKED TO DEATH.†The image parodies the visual language of Victorian mourning culture—coffins memorial imagery and epitaphs—while transforming it into a comic vignette. The joke plays on the familiar nineteenth-century phrase “talked to death†a hyperbolic expression suggesting that someone has been overwhelmed by excessive conversation advice or gossip. The phrase circulated in popular folklore and humor of the period and was sometimes linked to the Victorian medical diagnosis of “prostration†a condition describing physical collapse from stress or agitation. Comic and satirical CDVs formed a lively subgenre during the height of the carte-de-visite craze of the 1860s and 1870s. Publishers produced novelty cards featuring visual puns mock memorial imagery and caricature intended for display in photograph albums alongside conventional portraits. The playful use of coffin imagery reflects a broader Victorian taste for humorous memento mori motifs within popular graphic culture. unknown‎

‎[Women's History – Medicine – Crimean War – Early Photography] Kilburn, William Edward [Nightingale, Florence]‎

‎Carte-de-Visite Portrait of Florence Nightingale‎

‎N.p. 1870. Carte After the original photograph by William Edward Kilburn 1818–1891 taken circa 1854 with later CDV issue probably circa 1870s. Albumen print mounted on card; sitter identified in print beneath image. Standard carte-de-visite format approximately 2½ x 4 inches. Excellent contrast with light surface wear. Seated three-quarter portrait of Nightingale in dark silk dress with white collar hands folded over a paper posed beside an upholstered Victorian chair. The image derives from a sitting arranged in London with William Edward Kilburn one of Britain’s early professional photographers and a former daguerreotypist who gained fame by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. By the early 1850s Kilburn had established a reputation for photographing members of the aristocracy and prominent public figures.<br /> <br /> The Nightingale sitting happened shortly before her departure for the Crimea in October 1854 at a moment when her name was just entering the public press. The portrait predates her full transformation into the national icon later known as the “Lady with the Lamp.†Unlike later more romanticized images Kilburn’s photograph presents a composed unsentimental likeness more consistent with standard portraiture practices than her later photographs. Following Nightingale’s wartime service at Scutari 1854–1856 and the subsequent surge of public acclaim Kilburn’s image became the primary photographic source from which engravings lithographs and later carte-de-visite reproductions were made.1<br /> <br /> 1 Denis Pellerin “Florence Nightingale: The Mystery Behind Her Iconic Photographs†The Classic November 15 2020 https://theclassicphotomag.com/florence-nightingale-the-mysteries-behind-her-iconic-photographs/ accessed February 27 2026. unknown‎

‎[California - Early Photography] [San Francisco and the Bay Area]‎

‎A Pair of Photograph Albums Documenting San Francisco Monterey and the Surrounding Areas in the Late 1880s‎

‎Northern California 1880. 4to one album in burgundy cloth the other oblong brown pebbled cloth. Seventy-one sepia-toned and cyanotype photographs most measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Near fine with some light wear to albums photographs very good or better with very good contrast some showing a hint of fading. A very early pair of vernacular photograph albums centering on the experiences of a wealthy family in San Francisco Monterey and the surrounding areas in the late 1880s. The bulk of the images show the family and their unidentified circle in domestic scenes with the vernacular architecture and landscapes of the Bay Area on full display. Other images show landmarks including Golden Gate Park the Francis Scott Key monument various views of the first Hotel del Monte in Monterey which would burn in 1887 dating the photographs to the period prior to the fire. The album also includes photographs of African American families. <br /> <br /> The image quality is generally quite strong and the photographer was either a professional assembling the album which includes many portraits of family and presumed friends for themselves or the work of a highly skilled amateur. The Initials on the front pastedown are “M.J.R.†though this could be a later owner. The albums were from the estate of the muralist Clara Fargo Thomas who was a resident of New York and could possibly have been from one of her family members though we are unable to glean much detail from the contents. The few annotations offer little clues one just reading “5/11/89 - Golden Gate Park†and another identifying a house as 509 Webster St. in San Francisco though the typical Victorian architecture and sloped street of the house suggest it could have just been a photograph of San Francisco’s unique architecture. <br /> <br /> The photographs of the people give insight into the lives of the new wealthy class of San Francisco residents of the late 19th century with others interestingly showing rural scenes and people. The photographer also had an eye for the flora of the region which is displayed throughout. It is unclear what the relationship of the African-American subjects was to the photographer and why they appear in the album. Overall a compelling group of images and the earliest example of vernacular photograph albums of California images we can find in the trade. unknown‎

Very Good. A series of images taken by P.W. Poff who also operated a studio at Bluefield West Virginia. Pocahontas in Tazewell County was the site of a coal boom in the late nineteenth century when these pictures were taken. The large two-state coal region serviced by the Norfolk and Western Railway was named after the town. The images show a woman in formal dress a pair of men standing together and then two images of the same subject wearing a hat. There are no other clues as to the identification of the subjects who very well may have been residents of West Virginia as Pocohantas is situated on the border between the two states. P.W.
