‎Ornately Prepared Album of Photographs Showing the Aftermath of a Storm in Curtiss Wisconsin 1905‎

‎Curtiss 1905. Small album measuring 6 x 5 inches with seven photographs of storm damage in Curtiss OK. One picture apparently missing otherwise near fine. Very Good. A small album of photographs showing storm damage in the small town of Curtiss Wisconsin in June of 1905. ‎Outlines & Sketches by Washington Allston FIRST EDITION‎

‎Boston: Stephen H. Perkins 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 21.75" x 16" x 0.5. John Cheney Seth Wells Cheney Engravers. FIRST EDITION 1850. Hardcover. Bound in brown publisher's cloth with a darker brown cloth bordering the cover and spine. Gilt lettering on the front cover. Ex library title is written in white on the spine. Cheney engraved directly on plates daguerreotyped by Southworth and Hawes . of Boston. Josiah Hawes . used a special rectilinear lens of his own design to photograph the art which the Chaneys Cheneys engraved over. These plates must have been some of the largest ever done for publication being well over double-whole plate." Hanson Collection catalog p. 12-13. Unpaginated. <br><br>FROM THE INTRODUCTORY PAGES: "The Outlines and Sketches contained in this Volume are a part of those found in Mr. Allston's Studio in Cambridge Massachusetts after his death in July 1843. They consist in great part of compositions hastily sketched in chalk and never carried further; among them however are a few Outlines in umber on canvass which although more carefully done should not be considered as finished Outlines since they were of the figures in the different compositions vary form that of life to a few inches in length; and where it was necessary to reduce them for engraving the daguerreotype was used by which the image was conveyed to the engraver's plates prepared for that purpose and there fixed by tracing the line through the silver." <br><br>CONDITION: Ex-library with consistent library spore from Louisville Free Public Library. VG as cover shows wear and soiling. Foxed throughout yet engravings are still quite spectacular. Several plates contain a one inch open tear at the foredge yet has not compromised the integrity of the engravings. Large dampstain within the last several leaves at the corner. A beautiful portfolio that holds some sense of mystery and intrigue within its images. At 5 lbs. due to it's very large size and weight an additional shipping charge will likely apply. ‎[Chinese-Americans - Photography - American West]‎

‎Charley Young. Supplied Title‎

‎American West 1890. Cabinet Card measuring 5 ½ x 4 inches on larger mount. Identification on ink verso. Some fading very good. Very Good. A photograph of a Chinese man on horseback in western attire possibly taken in Oregon or California in the 1890s. A search of genealogical and newspaper records yield results for one or possibly two Charley Youngs of Chinese descent living in the United States during the period. We find a record of a Charley Young of Chinese descent living in San Francisco in the 1890s with a birthday listed as 1865. There are also multiple newspaper accounts of a Charley Young in Portland who married the superintendent of a school in Portland: “Charley Young an Americanized Chinaman.†He married Mary Bly superintendent of the Baptist Chinese Mission School in Portland. A Charley Young later appears in court records for a smuggling case involving prominent Chinese merchants in Oregon and describes a “Charley Young an Americanized Chinaman recently married to a white girl.†We are unable to tell given the limited identification on the photograph whether these records refer to our subjects but regardless the photograph provides an uncommon visual record of Chinese-Americans in a rural United States setting particularly during this period of severe population decline following the Chinese Exclusion Act. unknown‎

An uncommon first edition copy of Manuel Gomez Miralles’ photographic survey of Costa Rica. Miralles was one of Costa Rica’s most prolific photographers operating for many decades and this book is an early collection of his work. Miralles work is compositionally advanced and his large format images are reproduced effectively in the volume. This book was the only survey of Miralles’ work to appear in his lifetime and after his death his negatives were sold to a foreign photographer. ‎[Women] [Massachusetts] [Boston Brahmin] [Photography]‎

‎Photograph Album of roughly 1400 Pictures Taken by a Young Woman with a Connection to the Cabot Family of Boston Showing a Modern Eye for Composition Circa 1930‎

‎Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.<br /> <br /> The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk’s torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads “Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930â€. Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston’s storied upper class. unknown‎

‎La DANSE The Dance‎

‎Paris France: Revue International D'Art Dramatique. Very Good. 1949. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; There's a nice photo of Leslie Caron on page 3. The text to this book is completely in FRENCH. The book is in Very Good condition and is lacking the dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light rubbing and wear. There is some heavier edge wear nicking and fraying to the top spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. Illustrated throughtout with black and white photographs by Serge Lido. "Sergey Lidov ended up in Paris at the age of 18 was educated as a political scientist and began working at Rockefeller Bank. His fate could have been different if it had not been for a meeting with Irene Kaminsky.Irene also joined the VU magazine Vzglyad where she quickly became an authoritative build editor. At that time the VU photo-illustrated magazine had the best photo laboratory where prominent Parisian photographers came to show their pictures: Brassay Andre Curtes and many others. All of them showed their work to Irene Kaminsky and listened to her opinion. With Sergey Lidov then still a young bank clerk she was introduced by mutual friends. At first glance Lidov was conquered by the incredibly bright and charming Irene but her occupation seemed boring to her. According to legend it was Irene who gave Lidov the first Rolleiflex camera and offered to try herself as a photographer. Sergey Lidov wandered around the city with his Rolleiflex in search of original subjects plunging into the hectic artistic life of Paris. His first photo essay which arose from a series of photos of Le Bal Tabarin cancant dancers among Montmartre vineyards delighted Irene Kaminsky and VU editor-in-chief and was immediately published in the magazine. Financier Sergei Lidov became a photographer Serge Lido gaining a solid place in the Paris photographic Olympus and Irene Kaminsky became his wife adviser and editor of all future Lido books about ballet." from World ballet stars in the lens of the legendary Serge Lido. 1930-1980s 08/31/2019 . ‎N Y N Y: Rudd & Carleton. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong 4to 11" - 13; BRADY MATHEW. EHNINGER JOHN W. Illustrations of Longfellow's Courtship of Miles Standish. Photographed from the Original Drawings by Brady. First Edition with these illustrations. Original blood-red tooled morocco with gilt lettering at upper cover a. E. G. text with eight mounted albumen prints of drawings by Ehninger all approximately 5 1/4 X 7 1/2" on rectos of plain sheets. Binding strong darkened at spine and edges with old wear recently treated text strong with hinges repaired light marginal dampstain to all leaves but contents clean of foxing prints in nice condition with good tones; with contemporary engraved bookplate at front pastedown of Erastus Corning 1794-1872 founder of the New York Central Railroad . Van Haaften 33. A volume frequently overlooked in the history of the photographically illustrated book. This was the first American use of original photographs of illustrations for a literary work. Heretofore only through various mechanical printing processes could an artist's illustrations be reproduced faithfully primarily etchings and lithographs with almost all original illustrations on paper copied by others onto plates for engravings. Unpaginated aprox 40 leaves. Photographic reproductions of paintings had been included in a number of books but photographs of drawings specific to a particular literary work had not been previously attempted; the hope was a level of reproduction never before achieved. The process was expensive engravings were far cheaper than hand-mounting photographic prints the public yawned and the concept became an idea before its time to be resuscitated several decades later when the technique of photoengraving was perfected enabling publishers to put photographic reproductions of drawings directly onto printing plates. ‎Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Wrapped Reichstag Berlin 1971-95‎

‎Cologne: Taschen 1996. First Edition. Fine. Deluxe first edition "Special Edition" with fabric swatch mounted to back pastedown. 696 pp. profusely illustrated with color photographs. Oblong quarto bound in publisher's silver cloth lettered in blue on spine. Fine. Housed in the original slipcase printed paper and silver cloth with spot of soiling to upper edge. <br /> <br /> <p>The story of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 24-year quest to wrap Germany's historic parliament building in woven silvery cloth held with blue rope. The two artists were known for their monumental fabric installations of which this was the most iconic. The installation subverted the imposing dignity of the famous building a Neo-Renaissance behemoth left in ruins by the Battle for Berlin in 1945. The building was stripped and restored by the West German government during the 1960s then further repaired and crowned with a new glass dome in time for the new millennium. Before the new construction began Christo and Jeanne-Claude finally gained permission to wrap the building after decades of lobbying. The effort was seen as a symbol of reunification drawing millions of Germans to physically interact with what would once more be the seat of their government for the first time since 1933. ‎Photographs of Displaced People and Red Cross Relief Work in Vietnam 1972‎

‎Softcover. Very good. Softcover student notebook 8.25 x 6 inches containing 51 b/w photographs 2.5" x 3.5" mounted on graph paper leaves most with handwritten captions in Vietnamese. Dated 1972 on the front cover with additional handwritten titles or notes we have been unable to decipher. Two items stapled together are laid into the notebook both in French on the letterhead of the Indochina Operational Group of the Red Cross. A cover letter addressed to the National Societies of the Red Cross dated March 5 1973 reads roughly "It gives us great pleasure to send you the first set of photographs of the Red Cross in the Republic of Vietnam reported by M. Olaf Stroh during his recent trip to Hanoi and Haphong" and requests feedback. The attached sheet a photocopy provides a list of eight Activities of the Red Cross in Vietnam shown in "Series 4" of the photographs. These two items do not appear to have a direct relationship to the photo album i.e. these are not the photographs mentioned in the correspondence but both do relate to French Red Cross activities in Vietnam. The photographs show a variety of scenes relating to displaced people and relief efforts in South Vietnam. There are images of landscapes destroyed by the war trucks piled high with possessions people waiting in lines and crowds at distribution points for food and supplies and makeshift refugee camps with living spaces made from tarps poles and sheet metal. Red Cross vehicles appear in several photographs as do a pair of men who are likely representatives of the organization. A compelling view of the impact of the war on ordinary people's lives. unknown‎

‎[Mexico]. [Vernacular Photography]‎

‎Collection of Vernacular Stereoviews of Mexico Highlighting Travel in the Country in and Around Mexico City‎

‎Mexico 1940. Near fine. 100 stereoview photographs with duplicate 2.25-inch square image exposures mounted to grey card mounts measuring 3 x 6 inches. Prints hand-numbered in the margin at lower right thirty-three with hand-written ink notations to versos. A couple of prints with small areas of discolor to extremities with typical bowing to mounts otherwise a very well-preserved group. A compelling group of 100 vernacular stereoview photographs capturing travel in Mexico chiefly Mexico City and its surrounding rural environs to the near south and east in identified locations including Cordoba Fortin Cuernavaca Zacatepec Puebla Tlaxcala and others. Thirty-three of the views are hand-annotated and a few others capture visible signage identifying rural markets Native communities schools landmarks and more including a series from the floating gardens of Xochimilco rural schools near Cuernavaca the Temple at Quetzalcoatl and so forth. Some examples of the handwritten captions describe the nature of the indigenous communities encountered by the photographer such as: "Baby among the vegetables in the market - Cuernavaca" "A native woman goes to market in Cuernavaca" "A peasant home Chipitlan" "Old man cleaning tripe near community laundry at Zacatepec" "Native children selling bananas and gardenias packed in banana stalks at gate of old hacienda - Fortin" "Village women in community laundry at Zacatepec" "Native boy sliding down rail of inclined railway leading to valley near dam between Cordoba and Fortin " "Native children selling bananas and gardenias packed in banana stalks at gate of old hacienda - Fortin" "Gardenia vendors stopped us again as we returned from Cordoba" "Native market at Ixmiquilpan - poorest part of Mexico" and "The village orchestra - playing on native instruments - Tlaxcala."<br /> <br /> The materials are undated though a clear view of a school of the Comision Nacional de Irrigacion which was a federal agency in existence only between 1926 and 1947 and one view with two ca-1930s American cars clearly visible in the background along with general print qualities of the photographs suggests a date somewhere around 1940. Vernacular stereoviews of Mexico are exceedingly rare from any period. A complete list of the manuscript captions on the verso of thirty-three images is available by request. unknown‎

‎Various locations in the Dominican Republic 1930. Very good. Eighty-three smaller-format photographs each around 5 x 7 inches or smaller; seventy-two larger-format photographs each about 8 x 10 inches. Most images with manuscript or printed captions either in the image or on verso often with photographer's studio stamp. Minor to moderate wear occasional minor chipping to margins varying degrees of curling twelve images adhered to album leaves. A voluminous collection of over 150 photographs picturing the people cities landscapes and commercial activity in the Dominican Republic in the early-20th century. The images capture indigenous Dominican peoples street views waterfront views road construction sugar and other plantations various buildings landscapes and so forth. The photos were produced by a few photographers active in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean at the time including the Brown Brothers "Fotografia Manon Santo Domingo" whose embossed blindstamp can be seen in the image area of some image and Palau of Santo Domingo City. Most of the images exhibit some kind of manuscript or typed captions either in the negative or on the verso providing critical identification information for the content and/or settings in the pictures. The images identify street scenes on "Avenida Bolivar" "San Pedro de Macoris" and in various other cities as well as shots of "Teatro Independencia" "Palacio Municipal de Moca" "Hipodromo de Santo Domingo" a "Factoria" in La Romana "Palacio Consistorial" in the capital city of Santo Domingo "Cafe Eden" in Santiago de los Caballeros "The Citadel at Santo Domingo" "An American sugar plantation near San Pedro de Macoris" "Laboratorio de Fitopatologia" several views of old ruins and other commercial scientific educational or religious structures.<br /> <br /> Important Dominican landmarks pictured here include the "God Tree" "where legend says Columbus tied his vessel upon his first visit to the island in 1492 the wishing stone of Queen Anacaona who was executed by Bartolome de las Casas the "Puerta de San Diego" and the lighthouse at Santo Domingo City the Cathedral of Santo Domingo begun in 1504 and completed in 1550 and various sites relating to Columbus's arrival and time on the island. Other shots capture inventories in various warehouses or in agricultural fields of sugar cane tobacco onions or cotton an interior shot of a match factory in Puerto Plata a Ford dealership in Monte Cristi large stores of tobacco in La Vega laborers constructing a railroad track near Puerto Plata the old fort and other structures at Santo Domingo various shots of the Dominican Republic's federal army and military band locals picking coconuts and wild oranges along the Macoris River shots of various street vendors several shots of the "School children of Santo Domino" and more. Most of the commercial scenes feature numerous native Dominicans at work and the street scenes often picture locals as well.<br /> <br /> Though we have handled various groups of photographs featuring Cuba Jamaica Bermuda and other Caribbean locations this is the first collection picturing the Dominican Republic that we have offered and the largest we have encountered in the trade. The images provide an excellent opportunity for further study of the people places businesses churches and more in the Dominican Republic during the early part of the last century. unknown‎

‎Two Annotated Photographs of Early Groton South Dakota‎

‎N.p. likely Groton SD: October 1885. Very good. Two mounted albumen photographs 5.5 x 8.25 inches on 8-x-10-inch plain cardstock. Small chip to bottom edge of each mount some edge wear dust-soiling and rubbing. A highly-informative pair of original photographs of two different areas of Groton South Dakota just four years after its founding each identified in the lower margin both taken in October 1885 both from a slight elevation and each with numerous manuscript captions in the margins identifying various locations in the images. The first photograph pictures "Central Part of Groton. October 1885." Manuscript captions point to the bank post office "Trinity Church" the Presbyterian Church "Presbyterian Parsonage" and an "X" on the Brunswick Hotel identifying "Will's room formerly at the hotel." The second photograph is titled "Northern Part of Groton Dakota. In Oct. 1885." Among the buildings identified here are "Will's home" "School house" "New College Buildings" "Bank Building" and the location of Main Street. Each photograph pictures many more buildings than are identified through the captions and juxtapose the town's collection of buildings against a wide and empty prairie beyond. Together the photographs provide a rare and early city view of the still-remote city of Groton located in the north-eastern part of South Dakota and numbering just 1380 residents as of the 2020 census. ‎[Texas]. [Military Photography]‎

‎Twenty Signed Photographs of Vietnamese Airmen in Training at James Connally Air Force Base‎

‎Waco Tx 1956. Very good. Twenty individual photographs measuring 3.5 x 5 inches or slightly smaller each with accompanying inscribed notecards of roughly the same size. Each photo signed and mostly inscribed. Otherwise minor wear. A bit of discoloration to cards. An intriguing group of twenty signed photographs that depicts a group of Vietnamese servicemen in a training program at the now-defunct James Connally Air Force Base and around Waco Texas during the mid-1950s. The images were previously assembled in a now-perished album and presented to a Master Sergeant Jack Reavis presumably their instructor or guide and his wife "For souvenir of the times that we lived in James Connally AFB" on behalf of "All Vietnamese students." Each photo is signed and dated 1956 and often bears a short commemorative inscription and is also accompanied by a notecard bearing the name of the pictured man in the Roman alphabet and Vietnamese script and usually identifying him as a member of the "1st group" or "2nd group" of engineering mechanics. That they were receiving training in the field of aviation mechanics might also be intuited from the appearance of several of the men with aircraft. Other images including standing portraits near barracks and other bae buildings as well as more casual shots of men with cars horseback riding on the streets of downtown Waco and enjoying a day out at nearby Lake Whitney. We uncovered no additional information concerning this training program and 1956 seems quite early for stateside training of Vietnamese military personnel. The front board of the former album bearing the gift inscription and a notecard with a manuscript map of Vietnam are still with the photographs and other notecards. A very interesting group and quite worthy of further research. unknown‎

‎The Wonders of the Yosemite Valley and of California Rare Edition with 20 Mounted Photos‎

‎Boston and New York: Alexander Moore and Lee Shepard & Dillingham 1872. Hardcover. Very good. Third edition revised and enlarged; second printing. Small quarto pp. v-x xi-xii 13-98 with two maps and 20 original mounted albumen photographs credited to Boston photographer John Soule. In publisher's green cloth with beveled edges; front board decorated in gilt black and rose; all edges gilt; each text page and each photograph bordered in red. A very good copy with rubbing and fraying to corners and spine ends bookplate of Canadian bookseller and collector G. Ducharme on front pastedown handwritten date of December 15 1872 on front free endpaper evidence of an erased ink stamp on title page. Lacks tissue guard over plate facing p. 35 all others present. Contents sound and clean. This is the rarest and most desirable edition of this work as it is the only one to contain 20 rather than 10 mounted photographs. Kneeland 1821-1888 was a physician naturalist and Professor of Zoology and Physiology at MIT. This book is based on his first visit to the Yosemite Valley in 1870 and includes a narrative of his trip from and return to Boston. "Kneeland made every effort to obtain current and accurate information and each of the later editions of the guide incorporates new material.Weston J. Naef in his book Era of Exploration the Rise of Landscape Photography in the American West 1860-1885.comments that the photographs 'are curious because there is no evidence that Soule a talented landscape photographer was ever in California.which suggests that he might have purchased the negatives from a California photographer not an uncommon transaction'" Currey & Kruska 225. Eadweard Muybridge and Martin Hazeltine are both considered strong candidates to have been the actual photographer. Farqhuar #10; Cowan p. 333.
