Very good and scarce.This is a photographically illustrated discussion of the flora of Trinidad and the West Indies. ‎N.p.: N.p. ca. 1935-36. Large 13 x 10 1/2 inches album bearing 188 original photographs of place and people in Africa in the 1930s. The album is divided into two section. The first section has 56 original photographs measuring 6 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches. The second part has 132 photographs measuring 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches. Virtually all have captions in white. This count does not reflect the missing photographs i.e. captions without photographs; two in the front part and 1 in the back part. Contemporary album of mottled brown boards. Custom slipcase with printed paper cover label. The photographer who undertook this journey covered vast distances. Locales as disparate as Lome Togo Northern Ghana Mali Algeria Nigeria Dakar and Dahomey. Most show activities and people. Two show the Bidon 5 Weather Station in Algeria surely just put up. Another shows 6 scientists with the man in the middle holding two chimpanzees. It is likely that the album was compiled by medical/environmental researcher Dr. E. B. Worthington of the Freshwater Biological Association in England. In the rear is a manilla envelope addressed to him as well as a loose photograph bearing his copyright on the verso. "In 1930 Worthington married a trained geographer and talented pianist Stella Johnson with whom three years later he published a book on The Inland Waterways of Africa. From 1933 to 1937 he took part in the African Research Survey for which he was awarded the Mungo Park Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He was secretary to and first full-time director of the Freshwater Biological Association 1937Ã46. He returned to Africa in the late 1940s as science and development advisor. He was deputy scientific director for the Nature Conservancy 1957Ã65 and scientific director of the International Biological Programme IBP 1964Ã74. The conception of the African Survey emerged from a series of conferences held at Oxford University to coincide with the Rhodes Memorial Lectures. The African Survey's emphasis on science and its desire for colonial reform were the common threads that held the project together during its many transformations. The institute's redirection had as much to do with Ã’watertightÓ compartments of knowledge as it did with institutional and personal politics. The creation of the Scientific Sub-Committee formalized what had already been a two-tiered structure in the African Survey's organization. Generally throughout its execution the African Survey's leadership were bound to their original objective of developing a Ã’permanent scheme of researchÓ that could add to the study and management of Africa's imperial problems. "A decade-long endeavor 1929-38 the African Research Survey was designed to examine the extent to which "modern" knowledge was being applied to African problems. The original photographs measure 10 x 8 inches and they are a mix of photographs of rendering and photographs of actual vehicles. 29 of them are linen-backed and bound in a plain black leatherette album. The remainder are laid in. Excellent condition.This album was probably the property of Eckberg Auto Company of Grand Rapids as a few of the photographs bear their stamp on the verso. Including an array of enhanced photographs highlighting the gleaming flatbed trucks pragmatically designed for the working man. The first image shows the expansive company plant complete with a tall billowing smokestack and is followed by a selection of novel examples a few bearing advertising for local companies such as the Heyman Company Home Outfitters and the Henry Smith Floral Co. Some of the images focus solely on pertinent details of the vehicle construction like the drive shaft and engine block. The company started as the thte United Motor Trucks Company and changed it's name to United Motors Products Company in 1922. There is a view of the factory bearing the latter name as the first photograph in the album and as it is an artist's rendering we can safely date this book to just prior to 1922. "The first United trucks were 1 1/4- 3- and 5-ton models. These were conventional assembled trucks each powered by a four-cylinder Continental engine. The lightest truck had worm drive as did one of the two 3-ton models proving once again that chain drive and shaft drive were still both contending for acceptability." In the winter of 1996-97 state and federal authorities shot or shipped to slaughter more than 1100 Yellowstone National Park bison. Since that time thousands more have been killed or hazed back into the park as wildlife managers struggle to accommodate an animal that does not recognize man-made borders. Tensions over the hunting and preservation of the bison an animal sacred to many Native Americans and an icon of the American West are at least as old as the nation's first national park. Established in 1872 in part "to protect against the wanton destruction of the fish and game" Yellowstone has from the first been dedicated to preserving wildlife along with the park's other natural wonders. The Smithsonian Institution itself founded in 1848 viewed the park's resources as critical to its own mission looking to Yellowstone for specimens to augment its natural history collections and later to stock the National Zoo. How this relationship developed around the conservation and display of American wildlife with these two distinct organizations coming to mirror one another is the little-known story Diane Smith tells in Yellowstone and the Smithsonian. Even before its founding as a national park and well before the creation of the National Park Service in 1916 the Yellowstone region served as a source of specimens for scientists centered in Washington D.C. Tracing the Yellowstone-Washington reciprocity to the earliest government-sponsored exploration of the region Smith provides background and context for many of the practices such as animal transfers and captive breeding pursued a century later by a new generation of conservation biologists. She shows how Yellowstone through its relationship with the Smithsonian the National Museum and ultimately the National Zoo helped elevate the iconic nature of representative wildlife of the American West particularly bison. Her book helps all of us not least of all historians and biologists to better understand the wildlife management and conservation policies that followed. Very good.The Gate of Justice is the largest of the entrances into the castle of Alhambra. The Arabic name for the gate was long believed to refer to Islamic justice or law - charia. But in fact this was a misinterpretation for a similar-sounding word and it has been shown that the translation should be Gate of the Esplanade. Its multiple arches are decorated with the Hand of Fatima Mohammed's daughter and the key to the Islamic paradise as well as a Virgin and Child placed there by the Catholic Monarchs to consecrate the gate for Christianity.
