New Orleans 1963. Very Good -. New Orleans: ca. 1960-1965. Large oblong quarto 27x41cm.; brown gilt-tooled leatherette bound with leather strap; 47ll. to which are mounted 311 photographic snapshots nearly all black and white and measuring 8.5x8.5cm. Album a bit scuffed at extremities joints significantly cracked from use and poor quality of leatherette leaves a bit thumbed along fore-edge margins a number of photographs apparently removed though otherwise Good to Very Good contents that remain mostly in fine condition.<br /> <br /> Extensive though sadly uncaptioned personal photo album of a young white woman in New Orleans in the early to mid-1960s documenting her social family and work life date based on shots time-stamped 1963 and 1964. What we have gathered from the contents the compiler worked at least briefly as a server at a diner whose staff was mixed-race though still separated by position: the servers all appear to be white while the grill cooks and kitchen staff are Black. <br /> <br /> Of special note are the compiler's frequent trips to the Pontchartrain Beach amusement park in New Orleans a popular destination in the 1960s though the park was sold and its rides disbursed in the 1980s due to declining attendance. This album however beautifully captures its heyday including shots of the rides carnival games swimming pool tiki bar and a perennial favorite an oversized head inside of which our compiler loved to pose. <br /> <br /> The compiler as well as being a dog-lover was evidently a serious party-goer and additional snapshot vignettes capture various couples making out at a New Year's party or dressed up for Halloween. <br /> <br /> An excellent record of white New Orleans working class life marking the advent of the Swinging Sixties. unknown

A sixteen-page essay by noted Ethiopian novelist playwright and poet Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin 1936-2006 tracing Ethiopia's history from "Lucy" of prehistoric times until the present day is followed by 140 color photographic reproductions of work by Alberto Tessore many of them full-page with descriptions and a map at rear. The "bookmark" featuring a numbered list of photographs is present. The front pastedown is signed and inscribed by author Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin to American poet traveler and photographer Ira Cohen 1935-2011 who himself produced many photographic works while in Ethiopia in the 1980s. Additionally a slip from "International House" affixed to front free endpaper with a paper clip contains a record of communication between Cohen and Gabre-Medhin with a short message to Cohen signed "Tsegaye" by the author. A LOT of 15 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS of SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR TROOPS and ROUGH RIDERS at camp.
<p>Possibly Florida circa 1898. 1898. Very good. - A lot of 15 original 3-1/8 inch by 5-3/8 inch black & white photographs of Spanish-American War soldiers at a training camp quite possibly in Florida. The images depict uniformed troops lined up for inspection as well groups of soldiers at rest and recreation or performing tasks amongst rows of tents or in the fields. Several images depict small groups or individuals posing for portraits and one of the images depicts a large row of horses likely those of the Rough Riders being tended by soldiers as others perform tasks around the camp. There is but minor soiling to the verso of the photos and the edges are very slightly curled and could easily be pressed down. Very good.</p><p>The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States from April 21 to August 13 1898 following the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. The United States intervened in the Cuban Revolution and the Philippine Revolution the latter leading into the Philippine-American War. The war ended Spanish influence in the Americas Asia and the Pacific. The United States for its part gained sovereignty over Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines.</p><p>The First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry known as the Rough Riders trained at Camp Riverside in San Antonio Texas then moved to Tampa Florida as they awaited embarkment for Cuba.</p> (Possibly Florida), circa 1898.
