‎POMPEII An Architectural History‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has chipping and minor edgewear. ; Excavations at Popeii have been going on for more than two centuires, since 1748, and discoveries there have regularly produced new and important information about ancient Roman life. The site holds a rich concentration of municipal buildings, houses of every size and condition, villas, and tombs. Now in paperback, the first book of this century written in English devoted to Pompeian architecture and urban development tells the story of the city and its buildings. With text and illustrations, L. Richardson, jr portrays Pompeii in context, as a keystone in the architectural history of antiquity. Pompeii's life was comparatively short. From its meteoric rise as a seaport and shipbuilding center during the First Punic War until its abrupt destruction with the eruption of Vesuvius in A. D. 79, the city passed through four major building periods. After a general introduction to Pompeii's history and geography, the book proceeds through each period, discussing its public buildings, private buildings, and tombs. Each building is described and placed according to its importance in the development of its particular architectural form. Richardson offers new dates and arrives at new conclusions about the development of such important features as the city plan, fortifications, and the atrium/peristyle house. Fifty ground plans and twenty-five photographs illustrate the text. ; 10.5 x 1.5 x 8 Inches; 480 pages; Excavations at Pompeii have been going on for more than two centuires, since 1748, and discoveries there have regularly produced new and important information about ancient Roman life. ‎HOMER AND THE ARTISTS Text and Picture in Early Greek Art‎

‎Initial in ink to front inner cover 'N' (Jenifer Neils). Else very light shelfwear. ; This is a study of the works of art from early Greece that have long been presented as "illustrations to Homer, " but that are argued here to be nothing of the kind. Early Greek artists showed no preference for Homeric subjects and, when their interests did coincide with Homer's, treated his account as, at best, one of the possible variants. Close descriptive analysis of texts and pictures and of the artists' aims, together with statistical evidence, provide the basis for the argument. ; 0.43 x 8.29 x 5.91 Inches; 200 pages‎

‎THE FALL OF TROY IN EARLY GREEK POETRY AND ART‎

‎Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. Review of book (by Jenifer Neils- also her copy) tipped in. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 0.85 x 8.75 x 5.62 Inches; 304 pages; Greek myth-makers crafted the downfall of Troy and its rulers into an archetypal illustration of ruthless conquest, deceit, crime and punishment, and the variability of human fortunes. This book examines the major episodes in the archetypal myth - the murder of Priam, the rape of Kassandra, the reunion of Helen and Menelaos, and the escape of Aineias - as witnessed in Archaic Greek epic, fifth-century Athenian drama, and Athenian black- and red-figure vase painting. It focuses in particular on the narrative artistry with which poets and painters balanced these episodes with one another and intertwined them with other chapters in the story of Troy. The author offers the first comprehensive demonstration of the narrative centrality of the Ilioupersis myth within the corpus of Trojan epic poetry, and the first systematic study of pictorial juxtapositions of Ilioupersis scenes on painted vases.‎

‎THE PARTHENON FRIEZE‎

‎Dustjacket has edgewear with a couple of small tears. Book has very minor shelfwear. ; The artistic genius of Athens in the fifth century BC reached its peak in the sculpted marble reliefs of the Parthenon frieze. Designed by Phidias and carved by a team of anonymous masons, the frieze adorned the temple of Athena on the Acropolis and represents a festival procession in honour of the Olympian gods. Its original composition and precise meaning, however, have long been the subject of lively debate. Most of what survives of the frieze is now in the British Museum or the Acropolis Museum in Athens; the rest is scattered among a number of European collections. This book reconstructs the frieze in its entirety according to the most up-to-date research, with a detailed scene-by-scene commentary, and the superb quality of the carving is vividly shown in a series of close-up photographs. In his introduction Ian Jenkins places the frieze in its architectural, historical and artistic setting. He discusses the various interpretations suggested by previous scholars, and finally puts forward a view of his own.; Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" tall; 119 pages‎

‎Lagerlöf, Margaretha Rossholm‎

‎THE SCULPTURES OF THE PARTHENON Aesthetics and Interpretation‎

Light edgewear to DJ. ; 0.77 x 8.57 x 6.23 Inches; 212 pages; Margaretha Lagerlöf provides a complete overview of current knowledge of the sculptures of the Parthenon and offers new interpretations of the ancient temple`s sculptural creations in this book. She considers what the sculptures reveal about the Greek sense of democracy, the nature of women`s lives, and the relationship between human beings and the gods.‎

‎THE OXFORD HISTORY OF CLASSICAL ART‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has minor shelfwear and creasing. ; 1.1 x 10.81 x 8.62 Inches; 444 pages; The art and architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome lies at the heart of the classical tradition of the Western world. Their legacy is so familiar as to have become commonplace. The legacy may appear simple, but the development of classical art in antiquity was complex and remarkably swift. It ran from near abstraction in 8th-century BC Greece, through years of observation and learning from the arts of the non-Greek world to the East and, in Egypt, to the brilliance of the classical revolution of the 5th century, which revealed attitudes and styles undreamt of by other cultures. After Alexander the Great, this became the art of an empire, readily learned by Rome and further developed according to the Romans' special character and needs until it provided the idiom for the imaging of Christianity. In this book, the story of this pageant of the arts is told by five leading scholars. Their aim has been to demonstrate how the arts served very different societies and patrons; the roles and objectives of the artists; the way in which the classical style was disseminated far beyond the borders of the Greek and Roman world; and the splendour and quality of the arts themselves.‎

‎ROMAN BUILDING Materials and Techniques‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Minor bumping to 1 corner. Faint foxing. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.18 x 10.79 x 8.5 Inches; 360 pages; Roman architecture is extraordinarily rich, both in terms of the techniques and materials used and in the variety of buildings constructed, many of which are still visible today. Roman Buildings places emphasis on the technical aspects of that architecture, following the process of building through each stage, from quarry to standing wall, from tree to roof timbers. The author examines the different techniques involved in building in brick and in stone and wood, and how these materials were obtained or manufactured. He also discusses interior decoration and looks at the practical aspects of water supply, heating and roads. Each type of building required special tools and these are described, using both surviving examples and modern parallels. The Romans constructed many spectacular feats of engineering, producing magnificent monuments such as the Pantheon and Pont du Gard. This book looks at these large-scale public buildings but also at more modest homes and shops. The result is a thorough and systematic examination of Roman building, with over 750 illustrations, including the author's own drawings. Roman Buildings contains a foreword by Professor Michael Fulford.‎
