Detroit: D. L. Seymour & Co. ca. 1918. Original photograph album containing 14 occupational silver gelatin photographs of men and women laborers crafting and finishing wicker baby carriages. Each photograph measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. The album opens with an overview of the factory as men weave long pieces of the fiber into recognizable shapes. There are scenes of stacked armatures and metal wheels large flats of the raw material men assembling the carriages women at sewing machines rows of beautifully shaped wicker canopies awaiting finishing the final product being inspected and overalled workers carting away materials. With the name D. L. Seymour & Co. 1452 Penobscot Blvd #13 written in white ink on the front pastedown. Housed in the original 9 x 5 1/2 inch pebbled black cloth album. A fascinating item.This is obviously the work of a professional photographer though the impetus behind it remains a mystery as D. L. Seymour and Company was a grain elevator company. D. L. The Honeymoon Album of John Nivison Force and Ethel Wickson.
Berkeley: N.P. 1912. A charming honeymoon album for this California couple. John Force was a professor of hygiene at UC Berkeley and his betrothed Ethel Wickson was the niece of famed UC Berkeley horticulturist E. J. Wickson. Octavo. 104 pp. Includes newspaper clippings several original photographs plus ephemeral 'souvenirs' from the trains on which they toured the country. All along with hand-written journal entries about their journey which began in Berkeley California and continued to Chicago Philadelphia New Jersey and more. They returned to Berkeley in October 1912. In contemporar flexxible leather wrappers with the front cover bearing the embossed names of the couple and an image of the ship. Wear to edges and a horizontal tear to spine. A charming piece.The album opens up with with a printed engagement card; "Betrothed/Grace Ethel Wickson/John Nevison Force'. It is followed by announcements from newspapers throughout the Bay Area about the upcoming wedding and a handwritten list of engagement presents received. Then we find an inserted printed wedding invitation for Sept. 12th 1912 and a few pages are devoted to that event along with descriptions of the cake and signature of the wedding officiator etc. After this begins the handwritten journal of their travels to the East Coast and their experiences therein. The writer Ethel Wickson Force has added to her account of the trip by placing in numerous pieces of related ephemera including 16 original photographs telegrams numerous color railway trunk labels Southern Pacific Lehigh Valley Grand Trunk The North Western Line. Atlantic City Pennsylvania Lackawanna New York Central Burlington Route Denver and Rio Grande Western Pacific Feather River Route various tickets adverts for plays they went to see and some postcards of sights seen along the way. Ethel's writing is quite legible and she writes well of their various excursions to sights around the country. Apparently John Force was a bit of a skinflint as at the terminus of their honeymoon the couple attended the XV International Congress on Hygiene and Demography tickets for both the Forces to this event are tipped in. A reception for this event basically a meeting of public health officials was held at the White House and a Presidential Invitation on stiff card and filled out for Dr. & Mrs. Force is included. The couple visited numerous public health departments and officials on their trip and no doubt to the chagrin of Mrs. Force. They returned by Way of Salt Lake City and the last few pages are a list of the wedding presents received. N.P. hardcover

It is stamped on the rear 'Photo. by Dr. W. Ramsay Smith' and captioned in his hand 'At Port Vila - New Hebrides'
Ramsay Smith describes 'picture-making' at Port Vila in detail in his 1924 book 'In Southern Seas' and this image contains all the elements referred to: one's wife 'for comparison and relief to the various objects in the picture' the harbour as background to the wooded heights the ship in the distance . The corners of the mount are slightly rounded and both the image and the mount are a little foxed; overall it is an attractive item with more than the usual amount of background information. William Ramsay Smith 1859-1937 physician naturalist anthropologist civil servant soldier - and controversy was often never far away see the Australian Dictionary of Biography. His entry there states that 'Believing that tribal Aborigines were dying out he recorded their folklore in 'Myths and Legends of the Australian Aborigines' London 1930. Subsequent to this being published Dr Philip Jones has also recorded in the ADB that from the early 1920s David Unaipon 1872-1967 the Aboriginal preacher author and inventor 'studied Aboriginal mythology and compiled his versions of legends . Gathered before 1930 the legends are in his surviving manuscript in the Mitchell Library: they were commissioned and published by William Ramsay Smith without acknowledgment'. unknown
