‎HYDE DAYTON O‎

‎Sandy: The Sandhill Crane Who Joined Our Family‎

‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis. Softcover. Brand new book. On a wilderness ranch in southern Oregon nearly a century ago Dayton Hyde dove into a rushing river to rescue the threatened nest of a sandhill crane. The egg saved from the nest hatched into a bird and also into an amazing story. "Sandy" the crane grew up in Hyde's household as a member of the family and had to be taught she was really a bird. Hyde served as parent companion dietitian even flight instructor to Sandy and eventually watched over her mate and fledglings as well. Over the years he had to learn a lot about sandhills. In return the cranes taught him quite a bit about what it is to be wild. More than an animal story Sandy is the true account of an individual who dedicated himself to saving an endangered species. Hyde shares his totally charming often hilarious stories of Sandy and the other wild pets showing us how one man's heroic act to save an unhatched egg blossomed into a lifetime of conservation activities. First published over 30 years ago Sandy contains a message more urgent today as civilization sprawls without regard for wilderness. It shows what private landowners can do to help wildlife conservation that ranches when run with an understanding of whole ecosystems can serve as miniature wildlife sanctuaries that address the concerns of ranchers and environmentalists alike. ‎HOULE MARCY‎

‎The Prairie Keepers: Secrets Of The Zumwalt‎

‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis. Softcover. Brand new book. In the remote northeast corner of Oregon lies the ruggedly beautiful Zumwalt Prairie one of the last native prairies in the United States. A wild expanse of untilled ground covering nearly two hundred square miles the Zumwalt is almost entirely managed by cattle ranchers. It also is home to one of the highest concentrations of hawks in North America. Marcy Houle a wildlife biologist and student first went to the Zumwalt in 1979 to discover what attracts and sustains the hawks there in such startling abundance. Houle explores the vast prairie on foot and horseback cataloging its hawks studying its complex ecosystem and meeting its people. Fueled by her youth her spirit her humor--and in part by her naivete--she bands birds outruns a bull and pulls together the factious community of ranchers townspeople and government employees. Her findings eloquently reported show that ranchers and wildlife not only can coexist but in some instances must coexist if we are to save the last of the native prairies. In a new epilogue Houle writes of the Zumwalt two decades later. Despite tremendous changes occurring in the American West she finds reason for hope in the Zumwalt--in the hawks and ranchers still there and also in new partnerships that encourage stewardship and sustainable cattle grazing. ‎MCKINNEY SAM; CODY ROBIN INTRODUCTION‎

‎Reach Of Tide Ring Of History: A Columbia River Voyage‎

‎Oregon State University Press. Softcover. Brand new book. Aboard a small handmade boat Sam McKinney set out to rediscover the Columbia River of his youth. The story of his voyage offers an intimate history of the great river and of the people who have lived and worked along its shores. McKinney a seasoned explorer historian and riverman begins his voyage on the sea. Following the path of Robert Gray's ship Columbia Rediviva across the treacherous Columbia River bar he embarks on an upriver journey that leads beyond urban Portland to the barrier of Bonneville Dam. Along the way he visits the sites of old Indian villages the camps of the Lewis and Clark expedition the rotting piers of early river communities and the islands of the lower river. Walking out along the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia McKinney recounts how this infamous bar was formed and how it was tamed by turn-of-the-century marine engineering. He sloshes through Astoria's rainy streets recalling its origins as the first American outpost on the Pacific Slope and its lusty past as a working waterfront. His voyage takes him to ghost towns and abandoned villages Chinookville Frankfort Knappton. He describes the development of the river's fishing industry and the harsh conditions faced by fishers during the industry's peak years. He remembers his own boyhood working on the river as a gillnet fisherman and as a deckhand aboard one of the last sternwheelers. Combining the river's storied history rich personal memories and observations gleaned from the deck of the 16-foot Gander McKinney gives us a sensitive portrait of the Columbia river a book that reflects the rhythms of tides that the author knows so well. "Two weeks on the river and I was only fifty miles upstream" writes McKinney grounded on a hidden sandbar. "My wake had it been recorded would have revealed a slow wandering track of curiosity islands explored old townsites discoverd and unnamed channels followed. ‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis. Softcover. Brand new book. An engrossing memoir and eloquent portrait of place The Thunder Tree shows how powerful the relationship between people and the natural world can be. ‎DURBIN KATHIE‎

‎Tongass: Pulp Politics And The Fight For The Alaska Rain Forest‎

‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis. Softcover. Brand new book. The fate of the Tongass National Forest is one of today's most closely watched environmental issues. Praised by Publishers Weekly as a "blow-by-blow account of a messy controversy and an impressive example of thorough journalism" Kathie Durbin's acclaimed volume is now available in an expanded edition that updates the story of this remote wild beautiful land. After World War II the U.S. government lured two pulp companies to Southeast Alaska by promising them low-cost timber from the Tongass National Forest the planet's largest coastal temperate rain forest. The mills brought jobs and growth to a sparsely settled region. They also wreaked ecological havoc and created a timber industry that broke labor unions drove competitors out of business and controlled politicians and the U.S. Forest Service. It took a national campaign led by grassroots environmentalists to bring sanity and sustainability to management of the Tongass. In her insightful account of Alaska's era of pulp Durbin draws on the voices of the people most affected: independent loggers who fought back when the pulp companies conspired to drive them out of business; courageous biologists who warned that logging was destroying critical fish and wildlife habitat; Tlingit Indians who saw their traditional hunting grounds vanish; young activists and lawyers who found their lives transformed by the battle for the Alaska rain forest. In this new edition Durbin updates the story of the Tongass with a new chapter describing political and economic developments since 1999. Among the changes: a dramatic growth in cruise ship tourism a new governor's plan for a system of roads and bridges to link remote Southeast Alaska communities and a renewed push by the Forest Service under a timber-friendly administration in Washington D.C. to open vast roadless areas to logging. Yet the fight for the Alaska rain forest is becoming a broader movement as appreciation for the true value of the region's wilderness grows. Oregon State University Press, Corvallis paperback‎

‎Wild Beauty: Photographs Of The Columbia River Gorge 1867-1957‎

‎Oregon State University Press. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Winner of a 2009 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award Selected by the Oregon Arts Commission to receive the American Masterpieces Initiative grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts Oregon's official book in the Pavilion of the States at the National Book Festival in Washington D.C. in September 2008 Publication coincides with opening of major new exhibition of the photographs at the Portland Art Museum in October 2008. The inaugural volume in the Northwest Photography Series Wild Beauty chronicles the rich photographic history of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. This exquisitely produced large-format book features more than 130 imagesmost of them previously unpublished and many never before available for public viewby some three dozen photographers including Carleton Watkins Benjamin Gifford Lily White Sarah Ladd Fred Kizer Alfred Monner and Ray Atkeson. Wild Beauty represents in the words of one reviewer "a culmination of decades of research exhibition and total immersion in the geology history and photography of the Columbia River Gorge." The Columbia River Gorge exerts a powerful influence on the lives and imaginations of the inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest. For people who live here today just as for those Native Americans and European settlers who preceded us this dramatic natural landform is a source of awe. Since the 1860s it has inspired superb photographers who have framed and interpreted the way we see the Gorge and who have in turn had their artistic vision shaped by this compelling landscape. The ninety-year period covered in Wild Beauty was a critical period in the river's history. Over thousands of years the wild free-flowing torrent of the Columbia River carved a passage - the Columbia River Gorge - through the Cascade Mountain Range. In the 1860s when the first photographers arrived the Gorge still looked much the same as it had when Lewis and Clark made their way down the river in 1805 and indeed as it had for centuries before that when the native peoples' culture of fishing and trade thrived along the river's banks. In the mid twentieth century the character of the river was fundamentally altered by the construction of hydroelectric dams. Wild Beauty begins in 1867 with images by the legendary Carleton Watkins creator of some of the greatest landscape photographs of the nineteenth century. The volume ends in 1957 with the completion of The Dalles Dam which drowned Celilo Falls and with it the historic site where Indians had fished for millennia. The images in this beautifully designed volume are presented one to a spread with captions on the facing pages. The book is organized into five chronological sections each with a brief introduction; a map shows the locations where the photographs were made. The photographs have been meticulously restored and are exquisitely reproduced in four-color process to capture the subtle coloration and nuanced tonal values of albumen prints gelatin silver prints platinum prints hand-colored photographs and early Kodachromes. The photography of Watkins and his successors is a significant piece of the cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest. Readers interested in the history of the Columbia River and the photography of the developing American West will be enthralled by the book's scope and artistry. And those who love the Gorge's stunning beauty will welcome how this volume has captured its grandeur. Wild Beauty is the inaugural volume in a new series initiated by the Northwest Photography Archive. For 150 years photographers have chronicled the landscape people and events of the Pacific Northwest. The Archive's mission is to gather the finest and most significant of these images from both private and public collections and publish them in book form to make them widely available. All volumes in the series will be printed and bound in Oregon. Oregon State University Press hardcover‎

‎Nature's Justice: Writings Of William O. Douglas‎

‎Oregon State University Press. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. As the longest serving Justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court William O. Douglas was known for writing a host of dissenting opinions. He was also a prolific writer off the bench a man whose work was as much concerned with nature as with law. This collection brings together writings that represent the wide range of Douglas's interests. It includes selections from his autobiographical and political books and opinions from landmark casesall reflecting not only his love of justice but also his roots in the Northwest and his lifelong commitment to the environment. Several selections from Douglas's first book Of Men and Mountains portray his abiding love of the outdoorsparticularly the Northern Cascadesand the rugged people who live there. These personal writings warmly recall events of his youth and celebrate the power of the mountains to renew the human spirit. Other selections evoke Douglas's professional activities: as a New Deal insider and Supreme Court Justice a champion of civil liberties and the rights of minorities a strong internationalist and an unflagging supporter of environmental issues. These latter writings include passages from My Wilderness and his dissenting opinion in Sierra Club v. Morton arguing that trees have legal standing to bring lawsuits. These writings demonstrate that Douglas never shied from controversywhether over interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment or the choice between flies and bait for trout fishingand offer inspiration for both environmentalists and all who yearn for a more just society. Whether extolling the joys of the wild or defending the rights of citizens Douglas shows in this work that he truly was Nature's Justiceand one of a kind. ‎In The Blast Zone: Catastrophe And Renewal On Mount St. Helens‎

‎Oregon State University Press. Softcover. Brand new book. As it erupted in 1980 Mount St. Helens captured the attention of the region nation and world and it continues to fascinate us today: a constant reminder that we live in volcano country. In lucid prose and poetry by some of America's leading writers and scientists In the Blast Zone explores this story of destruction and renewal in all its human geological and ecological dimensions. Most popular accounts of the momentous eruption have focused on the devastation it caused. More recent scientific work on Mount St. Helens tells a story of unexpectedly rapid and varied ecological and geological change. In the Blast Zone is the first book to present a cross-pollination of literary and scientific perspectives on the mountain's history of cataclysm and renewal. Most of the contributors to this volume camped together on Mount St. Helens for four days hiking observing and sharing ideas. They asked the question: What can this radically altered landscape tell us about nature and how to live our lives In the Blast Zone collects some of their answers. While introducing ecological and geological insights it also tells compelling stories about how science and literature inform our lives and our relationship to nature. These writings will startle readers with new recognition of the matchless gifts of Mount St. Helens: the gifts of beauty of illumination of hope. Oregon State University Press paperback‎

‎SULLIVAN WILLIAM L‎

‎Listening For Coyote: A Walk Across Oregon's Wilderness‎

‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis. Softcover. Brand new book. The spirit of the wilderness is an elusive quarry. William Sullivan's quest for it took him on a 1361-mile solo backpacking trek across his native Oregon. His remarkable route traversed 4 mountain ranges and 18 designated Wilderness Areas. It led through fogbound rain forests windswept glacial cirques and sunbaked desert canyons from Oregon's western shore at Cape Blanco to the state's easternmost point at the bottom of Hells Canyon. Listening for Coyote is Sullivan's classic account of his 2-month journey. Along the way he encountered blizzards poisonous mushrooms and marauding bears but Sullivan's book is more than just an outdoor adventure story. He spices his journal with the observations of a talented naturalist notes on history and geology demonstrations of survival skills and encounters with some unforgettable people. These last include a political scientist who leaves his classrooms to protect Bald Mountain from the Forest Service a braided and ear ringed forest ranger who takes up chewing tobacco as a political move a camouflaged elk hunter who uses only a bow and hopes to be reincarnated as a stag elk and an ancient widow who farms alone from a remote and rickety miner's cabin. What all of these people share and what the whole book illustrates is a deep connection to the wilderness itself that place we must preserve where humans still do not control things. Written in a soft-spoken but powerful style Sullivan's book illustrates with living examples just why we are right to work to save such places. Oregon State University Press, Corvallis paperback‎

The year he graduated from college 22-year-old Noah Strycker was dropped by helicopter in a remote Antarctic field camp with two bird scientists and a three months' supply of frozen food. His subjects: more than a quarter million penguins. Compact industrious and approachable the Adlie Penguins who call Antarctica home visit their breeding grounds each Antarctic summer to nest and rear their young before returning to sea. Because of long-term studies scientists may know more about how these penguins will adjust to climate change than about any other creature in the world. Bird scientists like Noah are less well known. Like the intrepid early explorers of Antarctica modern scientists drawn to the frozen continent face an utterly inhospitable landscape one that inspires isolates and punishes. With wit curiosity and a deep knowledge of his subject Strycker recounts the reality of life at the end of the Earththousand-year-old penguin mummies hurricane-force blizzards and day-to-day existence in below freezing temperaturesand delves deep into a world of science obsession and birds. Among Penguins weaves a captivating tale of penguins and their researchers on the coldest driest highest and windiest continent on Earth. Birders lovers of the Antarctic and fans of first-person adventure narratives will be fascinated by Strycker's book. Oregon State University Press paperback‎

‎WAGENKNECHT LOUISE‎

‎Light On The Devils: Coming Of Age On The Klamath‎

‎Oregon State University Press Corvallis: 2011. Softcover. Brand new book. When Louise Wagenknecht's family arrived in the remote logging town of Happy Camp in 1962 a boundless optimism reigned. Whites and Indians worked together in the woods and the lumber mills of northern California's Klamath country. Logging and lumber mills it seemed would hold communities together forever. But that booming prosperity would come to an end. Looking back on her teenage years spent along the Klamath River Louise Wagenknecht recounts a vanishing way of life. She explores the dynamics of family relationships and the contradictions of being female in a western logging town in the 1960s. And she paints an evocative portrait of the landscape and her relationship with it. Light on the Devils is a captivating memoir of place. It will appeal to general readers interested in the rural West personal memoir history and natural history. Louise Wagenknecht worked for the Forest Service for more than thirty years. She is the author of White Poplar Black Locust. Her writing has appeared in American Nature Writing The River Reader Ring of Fire: Writers of the Yellowstone Region and High Country News. She lives in Idaho. "I haven't read anything quite like this book. The narrator is a naturalist raised among loggers and millworkers. Her social milieu is Forest Service and she takes an unflinching view backward at the complicity of well-meaning government in the excesses of industrial forestry. This is not just another environmental scream. It's intelligent and balanced. It's unique."Robin Cody author of Ricochet River and Voyage of a Summer Sun "Together with a beautifully narrated personal story Light on the Devils brings us a unique and invaluable record of the US Forest Service during a time of painful transition in the Pacific Northwest."Mary Clearman Blew author of This Is Not the Ivy League Oregon State University Press, Corvallis: 2011 paperback‎

‎Eliot Porter: In The Realm Of Nature‎

‎Getty Publications Los Angeles: 2012. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Known for his exquisite images of birds and landscape Eliot Porter American 1901-1990 was a pioneer in the use of color photography. His work also became a powerful visual argument for environmental conservation. Trained as a medical doctor and possessing a scientist's gift for close observation Porter explored new ways of depicting nature building blinds in trees so he could study his avian subjects at closer vantage and producing landscape images that capture both pristine forest and ragged river canyons with equal force and brilliance. Initially encouraged by the groundbreaking photographers Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz Porter went on to produce a body of work all his own. His 1962 Sierra Club book In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World with its images grouped by season and accompanied by quotations from Henry David Thoreau transformed the concept of nature photography books. Ultimately Porter's photographs came to the attention of Congress and led to the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964 the foundational law in wilderness management today. Eliot Porter: In the Realm of Nature contains 110 images from the collections of Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser at the Amon Carter Museum Fort Worth Texas and of the J. Paul Getty Museum along with an essay by Paul Martineau that discusses Porter's life and the innovations he brought to the practice of photography. Paul Martineau is an associate curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum and author of Herb Ritts: L.A. ‎ROBERTS SUZANNE‎

‎Almost Somewhere: Twenty-eight Days On The John Muir Trail‎

‎University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2012. Softcover. Brand new book. Day One and already she was lying in her journal. It was 1993 Suzanne Roberts had just finished college and when her friend suggested they hike California's John Muir Trail the adventure sounded like the perfect distraction from a difficult home life and thoughts about the future. But she never imagined that the twenty-eight-day hike would change her life. Part memoir part nature writing part travelogue Almost Somewhere is Roberts's account of that hike. John Muir had written of the Sierra Nevada as a "vast range of light" and this was exactly what Roberts was looking for. But traveling with two girlfriends one experienced and unflappable and the other inexperienced and bulimic she quickly discovered that she needed a new frame of reference. Her story of a month in the backcountryconfronting bears snowy passes broken equipment injuries and strange menis as much about finding a woman's way into outdoor experience as it is about the natural world she so eloquently describes. Candid and funny and finally wise Almost Somewhere is not just the whimsical coming-of-age story of a young woman ill-prepared for a month in the mountains but also the reflection of a distinctly feminine view of nature. ‎LONG JOHN A‎

‎The Dawn Of The Deed: The Prehistoric Origins Of Sex‎

‎University of Chicago Press Chicago and London: 2012. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. We all know about the birds and the bees but what about the ancient placoderm fishes and the dinosaurs The history of sex is as old as life itselfand as complicated and mysterious. And despite centuries of study there is always more to know. In 2008 paleontologist John A. Long and a team of researchers revealed their discovery of a placoderm fish fossil known as "the mother fish" which at 380 million years old revealed the oldest vertebrate embryothe earliest known example of internal fertilization. As Long explains this find led to the reexamination of countless fish fossils and the discovery of previously undetected embryos. As a resultplacoderms are now considered to be the first species to have had intimate sexual reproduction or sex as we know itsort of. Inspired by this incredible find Long began a quest to uncover the paleontological and evolutionary history of copulation and insemination. In The Dawn of the Deed he takes readers on an entertaining and lively tour through the sex lives of ancient fish and exposes the unusual mating habits of arthropods tortoises and even a well-endowed 16.5 inches! Argentine Duck. Long discusses these significant discoveries alongside what we know about reproductive biology and evolutionary theory using the fossil record to provide a provocative account of prehistoric sex. The Dawn of the Deed also explores fascinating revelations about animal reproduction from homosexual penguins to monogamous seahorses to the difficulties of dinosaur romance and how sexual organs in ancient shark-like fishes actually relate to our own sexual anatomy. The Dawn of the Deed is Long's own story of what it's like to be a part of a discovery that rewrites evolutionary history as well as an absolutely rollicking guide to sex throughout the ages in the animal kingdom. It's natural history with a naughty wink. University of Chicago Press, Chicago and London: 2012 hardcover‎

‎A World In One Cubic Foot: Portraits In Biodiversity‎

‎University of Chicago Press Chicago and London:. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Twelve inches by twelve inches by twelve inches the cubic foot is a relatively tiny unit of measure compared to the whole world. With every step we disturb and move through cubic foot after cubic foot. But behold the cubic foot in naturefrom coral reefs to cloud forests to tidal poolseven in that finite space you can see the multitude of creatures that make up a vibrant ecosystem. For A World in One Cubic Foot esteemed nature photographer David Liittschwager took a bright green metal cubemeasuring precisely one cubic footand set it in various ecosystems around the world from Costa Rica to Central Park. Working with local scientists he measured what moved through that small space in a period of twenty-four hours. He then photographed the cube's setting and the plant animal and insect life inside itanything visible to the naked eye. The result is a stunning portrait of the amazing diversity that can be found in ecosystems around the globe. Many organisms captured in Liittschwager's photographs have rarely if ever been presented in their full splendor to the general reader and the singular beauty of these images evocatively conveys the richness of life around us and the essential need for its conservation. The breathtaking images are accompanied by equally engaging essays that speak to both the landscapes and the worlds contained within them from distinguished contributors such as Elizabeth Kolbert and Alan Huffman in addition to an introduction by E. O. Wilson. After encountering this book you willnever look at the tiniest sliver of your own backyard or neighborhood park the same way; instead you will be stunned by the unexpected variety of species found in an area so small. A World in One Cubic Foot puts the world accessibly in our hands and allows us to behold the magic of an ecosystem in miniature. Liittschwager's awe-inspiring photographs take us to places both familiar and exotic and instill new awareness of the life that abounds all around. ‎SHAW HARLEY G; WEISENBERGER MARA E‎

‎Twelve Hundred Miles By Horse And Burro:j Stokely Lyon And New Mexico's First Breeding Bird Survey‎

‎University of Arizona Press Tucson: . Softcover. Brand new book. J. Stokley Ligon's work in bird conservation habitat protection and wildlife legislation during the mid-twentieth century is well-documented in his own writing and the writing of others. But hovering in the background of Ligon's life story has always been the rumor of a trip he made alone as a young man in 1913 in which he covered much of New Mexico alone on horseback. Details of the trip had faded into history and Ligona self-effacing manhad never published the story. As it turns out the trek was Ligon's first job with the US Biological Survey and it did not go entirely undocumented. The breeding-bird population report that eventually resulted from the journey photographs from glass plate negatives andperhaps most enticinglyLigon's own personal diary from these travels are presented here. Not just a compelling account of the expedition itself the materials and insights found in this volume also reveal aspects of Ligon's family history his early interest in wildlife and the development of the wilderness skills needed to undertake such a survey. Using his origi-nal itinerary and handwritten report the authors of this book revisited many of the places that Ligon surveyed and in a few cases were even able to locate and repeat Ligon's early photographs. Combined with a discussion of the conditions of birds and other wildlife then and now this volume serves as a useful tool for understanding how wildlife numbers distribution and habitats changed in New Mexico over the course of the twentieth century. Birding enthusiasts historians naturalists and even armchair adventurers will all find something to love in this chronicle of a young man from a West Texas ranching family with a driving ambition to be a professional naturalist and writer.
