[PHOTOGRAPHY]. POUNCY, John
Dorsetshire Photographically illustrated. By J. Pouncy. The detail and touch of nature faithfully reproduced by a new process on stone by which views are rendered truthful artistic and durable
London. Dorchester: Bland & Long. John Pouncy Photographic institution 1857. Four parts in two volumes. 90; 82pp. Lithographic title to Vol I. terminal advertisements and colophon leaves to each volume all included in preceding collation. With 79 photo-lithographic plates one of which double-page. Original publisher's limp cloth decorated in blind and titled in gilt; Vol II neatly recased in the original binding at an early date. Some rubbing tearing and a little marking to binding; loss to spines. Sporadic spotting to text and images occasional marginal tears including to endpapers and repairs only touching the image on two plates. Inscriptions to each front endpaper of 'Mrs Michel' of Whatcombe House featured in this volume and described as 'not distinguished by any remarkable feature' but as beautifully situated with 'adjacent grounds extensive and picturesque'. An unsophisticated copy of the most important study of Dorset country-houses from their golden age which was also the first - and only - major English book produced in photolithography and is as such a milestone in the history of permanent photographic reproduction. It was described by Gernsheim as 'not only the first but remained the only attempt in book form to reproduce photographic views from nature by photolithography' and by McLean as marking a 'transitional stage between drawing and unretouched photography'. As is explained by English photographic pioneer John Pouncy 1818-1894 in both the introduction and advertisements of this present volume the fading nature of early photography was the revolutionary illustrative median's greatest weakness: 'astonishing as is the effect and almost perfect as is the beauty of some of these works of art permanency is found wanting' or in short 'Photographs very generally fade'. Thus between the conception and completion of this photographic study of his beloved native Dorsetshire Pouncy called 'in the aid of another art that of Lithography; and thus without forfeiting the exactness which is the peculiar characteristic of the one to ensure the quality of durability which is unhappily wanting to it by means of the co-operation of the other' and so 'the views which were originally announced as Photographs will now appear as Photo-Lithographs'. As the reproduced excerpt from a contemporary Poole newspaper review highlights Pouncy's devised process involved transferring long-exposure 'photography to stone and then re-transfers it to paper'; a service that he also here advertises as available from his Dorchester studios. Non static-features were added in by hand giving a rather ghostly appearance. The process must necessarily have been both time-consuming and expensive and each part of this work published by subscription was advertised originally at the price of £1 1s or £5 5s for the planned whole the fifth and sixth of which were never published. Subscribers included the poet William Barnes and many of the owners of the houses featured in the book. Not pure photographs but not simply hand-drawn lithographs either his process produced images truly symbolic of the Victorian artistic compact between mechanisation and manual labour; no book could claim to more truly occupy the threshold between photographic and lithographic illustration. Gernsheim p.546. McLean Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing p.128. First edition. Oblong folio. Bland & Long. John Pouncy, Photographic institution hardcover

[Japanese Americana]: [Photography]
Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting the Personal and Academic Life of a Young Japanese American Woman and Her Family in Japan and California
Various locations mostly Japan but also California and Hawaii 1947. Good. 24 leaves illustrated with 206 mounted black-and-white or sepia-toned photographs of varying sizes most with manuscript captions in Japanese. Quarto. Contemporary maroon photograph album with floral design and "Photo Album" printed on front cover. Spine chipped both boards and spine detached minor rubbing to boards. Photographs generall well preserved. A well-annotated vernacular photograph album documenting the life schooling and early work career of a young woman in the Hamamoto family the only daughter and here referred to simply as "Hamomoto-san" along with significant images of her family in California in the 1930s. Hamamoto's family seem to have been early immigrants to the Los Angeles area particularly Pacoima where they ran a meat market and grocery store in 1934. Seven photographs in a two-page spread show the Hamomotos in Pacoima including four of their store and three of the Hamomotos posed at Pacoima Elementary School; one of the latter images shows the compiler posed with three other students of different ethnicities at the school.

The present album includes numerous photos of Hamomoto along with portratis of her parents brothers various friends and so forth. Hamamoto's family apparently relocated back to Japan in the mid-1930s stopping in Hawaii along the way where a photo of the family is captioned "On the way back to Japan." She evidently stayed in Japan thereafter likely so that she could attend school in Hiroshima. Once Hamamoto resettled in Hiroshima she enrolled in a Buddhist-affiliated private high school for girls Shintoku Higher School for Girls where she graduated in 1942. Much of the latter half of the present album contains school class photos groups shots of students engaging in various ceremonies and school projects individual portraits of her classmates with many identified and other scenes at school and at reunions afterwards. Hamomoto's school was later destroyed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 killing almost 400 students and teachers.

The present album also documents at least one other back-and-forth move between the United States and Japan within the Hamomoto family. In 1940 the compiler's brother Hiroshi went to the U.S. and returned in 1941 where he entered a major institute focusing on broadcast technology. Following high school Hamomoto worked for Mitsui Bussan for a while; one image here is captioned "During the time I worked at Mitsui & Co. 1944. Taken on the roof." Mitsui Bussan is still a major trading company in Japan that deals in commodities. Hamomoto may have also worked for American authorities during the Occupation of Japan following World War II evidenced by a couple of images here showing her posed outside an R.T.O. office in 1947. The American military established the Railroad Transportation Office in occupied Japan in order to manage military and personnel travel on the Japanese railway system; these offices were set up at several major Japanese train stations.

This album is a nice example of a primary source reflecting the fluid interplay within the Japanese and Japanese-American communities with regard to life in Japan versus the United States before World War II. There were often tensions within Japanese and Japanese-American families related to which country provided better opportunities for their families especially the younger generations. The present album is one example when the family apparently decided against life in America and returned to the mother country specifically to Hiroshima. The compiler of the album survived the war however and may have even worked with American occupiers likely due to some facility with the English language first learned long before during childhood in California. unknown

[Native American Photography]
Pair of Photographs Featuring Groups of Native Americans
N.p. 1900. About very good. Two silver gelatin photographs each 4.25 x 6.5 inches on mounts measuring 8 x 9.75 inches. Moderate foxing to mounts some surface wear spotting and silvering to images. A wonderful pair of original photographs capturing two different groups of Native Americans in traditional dress. The first image features nine Native Americans including men women and one young girl. The second captures seven men and women. All of the subjects in each picture stare directly into the camera. The images are not captioned in the negative by the photographer but the subjects are clearly Plains Indians or perhaps from the southwest given their attire. The images offer an excellent opportunity for further research to identify the subjects and their tribal affiliation. The two photographs do have the feel of picturing members of the same tribe. unknown
