MILLER CHRIS
Public Lands Public Debates: A Century Of Controversy
Oregon State University Press. Softcover. Brand new book. The subject of historic struggle and contemporary dispute public lands in the United States are treasured spaces. In Public Lands Public Debates environmental historian Char Miller explores the history of conservation thinking and the development of a government agency with stewardship as its mission. Owned in common our national forests monuments parks and preserves are funded through federal tax receipts making these public lands national in scope and significance. Their controversial histories demonstrate their vulnerability to shifting tides of public opinion alterations in fiscal support and overlapping authorities for their managementincluding federal state and local mandates as well as critical tribal prerogatives and military claims. Miller takes the U.S. Forest Service as a gauge of the broader debates in which Americans have engaged since the late nineteenth century. In nineteen essays he examines critical moments of public and private negotiation to help explain the particular and occasionally peculiar tensions that have shaped the administration of public lands in the United States. BERMAN MICHAEL PHOTOGRAPHY; REDDING MARY ANNE EDITOR
Gila - Two Volume Set
Museum of New Mexico Press Santa Fe: 2012. Hardcovers with dustjackets in slip-case. Two volumes. Brand new books. The forests comprising the Gila National Forest and Wilderness in southwest New Mexico is the largest in the contiguous U.S. the least visited or photographed the one most wild in nature. It is nestled at the nexus of four great ecosystems. It lies at the end of the Rocky Mountains after they slide down the North American continent like a glacier before breaking up into an archipelago of small ranges floating in a sea of grasslands. A couple hundred miles to the south the Sierra Madre Mountains rise up serrating Mexico for another two thousand miles. To the west lies the Sonoran Desert with its giant saguaros and to the east spreads the Chihuahuan Desert a minimalist dream of small ranges and desert grasslands. In its present state the Gila is a functioning high-quality ecosystem of remote forests and canyons. The Gila River courses through this land the last undammed river in New Mexico. The heart of the Gila is its unspoiled wilderness. Noted environmentalist Aldo Leopold conceived the modern concept of "wilderness" here. It was designated the world's first wilderness area in 1924 and became the cornerstone of the National Wilderness Preservation System when the Wilderness Act was signed into law in 1961. For more than thirty years celebrated photographer Michael P. Berman has explored the vast Gila fascinated by the land and how people use and value it. He has wandered deep into the forest with his large-format camera searching for the untrammeled scraggly and complex ecosystems allowing the Gila to reveal itself. In this two-volume slip-cased edition the untouched specialness of the Gila is captured in Berman's photographs and explored in fifteen essays by noted writers natural historians and environmentalists. LOUGHRY W. J.; MCDONOUGH COLLEEN M
The Nine-banded Armadillo: A Natural History
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: . Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The word armadillo is Spanish for "little armored one." This midsize mammal that looks like a walking tank is a source of fascination for many people but a mystery to almost all. Dating back at least eleven million years the nocturnal burrowing insectivore was for centuries mistaken for a cross between a hedgehog and a turtle but it actually belongs to the mammalian superorder Xenarthra that includes sloths and anteaters. Biologists W. J. Loughry and Colleen M. McDonough have studied the nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus for more than twenty years. Their richly illustrated book offers the first comprehensive review of everything scientists know about this unique animal. Engaging both scientists and a broader public Loughry and McDonough describe the armadillo's anatomy and physiology and all aspects of its ecology behavior and evolution. They also compare the nine-banded armadillo with twenty or so other related species. The authors pay special attention to three key features of armadillo biologyreproduction disease and habitat expansionand why they matter. Armadillos reproduce in a unique and puzzling manner: females always give birth to litters of genetically identical quadruplets a strategy not found in any other vertebrates. Nine-banded armadillos are also the only vertebrates except for humans known to contract leprosy naturally. And what about habitat expansion The authors suggest that the armadillo's remarkable spread across the southeastern United States may be the consequence of its most notable feature: a tough protective carapace. Biologists evolutionists students and all those interested in this curious creature will find The Nine-Banded Armadillo rich in information and insight. This comprehensive analysis will stand as the definitive scientific reference for years to come and a source of pleasure for the general public. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: hardcover

YOCHIM MICHAEL J
Yellowstone And The Snowmobile: Locking Horns Over National Park Use
University Press of Kansas Lawrence: . Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. It is the world's best-known national park with a controversy that no amount of snow can bury. Rosy-cheeked snowmobilers extol the glories of riding through a winter wonderland while environmentalists decry the noise the air pollution and the harm to wildlife. There seems to be no room for compromise. In this first book-length study of winter use in any national park Michael Yochim examines the longstanding conflict between the National Park Service and groups who favor or object to snowmobiles in Yellowstone. By illuminating the fundamental drivers of the controversyAmerican values community identity industry influence and political tampering with policyhe doesn't merely document the debate but shows how increasingly politicized battles have taken a toll on the autonomy of the NPS and its ability to protect the park. The debate itself Yochim observes is not over whether one mode of transportation is more appropriate than another but whether it is more important to embrace nature's sacredness or one's personal liberties. With motorized snow travel sanctioned for forty years snowmobilers see their sport as an expression of freedom and rugged individualism and attempts to curtail their activity as un-American. Conversely environmentalists see parks as sacred space so snowmobiles to them are inappropriate in what they regard as a temple. Yochim discusses the political and legal intricacies of arguments on both sides in a balanced presentationone that does not spare the NPS from close scrutinyand he examines influence on the Park Service from both political parties. Along the way he teases out the role of science as a policy guide the place of values in the controversy and the influence of strident personalities in the debate. In tracing the history of motorized winter recreational use of the park from the earliest days of winter visitation in the 1930s to the present Yochim shows that what is at stake is more than recreation in one park but the very mission of the NPSand whether political machinations will keep it from protecting the park and accomplishing that mission. Yellowstone and the Snowmobile allows readers to better understand this controversy one that is unlikely to go away any time soon. University Press of Kansas, Lawrence: hardcover
