Teacher's Album Photography
Teacher's Album of 124 Photographs from Rural Midwestern School in 1920s
Rural Schools Photo album from a teacher working in 1920s in several rural Midwestern America including Michigan Schools. 124 original silver gelatin print photographs detailing the lives of teachers students and community members around the one-room schools that served small farming communities. 124 black and white silver gelatin print photos various sizes from 2.5 x 1.5 in. to 4.5 x 6.5 in. Photos date from 1922-1929. Original paper boards. 7 x 12 inches. 58 pages. Album from teacher who worked at Pearsall School 1922-23 Eddy School 1923-24 Baker School 1924-25 Country Farm School 1925-26 Dye School 1927-28 and Dorr School 1927-29. In addition to photos includes 32 pieces of ephemera including drawings invitations valentines and numerous press clippings with updates on the various schools. Most of the photos identify the school and include group photos of the children. These one-room schools had few pupils often under 20 in the entire school so teachers had to be prepared to instruct students at multiple levels. Many of the group photos show children in working clothes such as overalls and simple cotton dresses. In some photos it's clear that children are barefoot while others taken in cooler months show them bundled up in jackets and work boots. In addition to photos of students posing by their schools there are images of special presentations and students at leisure. One image shows the children all dressed in capes as part of a musical performance; another shows two students and the teacher riding bicycles on a sunny afternoon. There are 47 individual photos of students from Dorr and Loomis Schools with their first and last names handwritten below. One particularly striking image of a young boy Ronald Bishop comes with additional information on his fate: "Killed by car". Some photos identify community members such as "Nora and Hazel" and "Mr. Barnes" who appears to be a delivery person in his official cap and horse-drawn buggy.

Newspaper clippings on the various schools provide updates on the institutions and students' progress. "Hazel M. Hummel Teacher. Our school closed for vacation with Christmas program at the schoolhouse. After the program.the ladies ten treat dus to popcorn balls and candy which we enjoyed very much. Santa Clause was there and we all received a generous share of the presents with with the tree was loaded." "We now have an enrollment of 13.Our percentage of attendance was 98 last month. We went flowering last week and found adder-tongues May flowers and a few lilies. The with graders have finished all their books and are reviewing now in preparation for the examination next week.Last Friday we celebrated Willard and Lucille Youngs' birthday with a potluck dinner at the school-house." "There are now 21 pupils.the primary grade pupils have made brownies lanterns and witches in the kettle for Hallowe'en seat work. The older grades made Hallowe'en posters for Friday's art class. The eight grade agriculture class have collected and mounted in a scrapbook the leaves of the trees in our neighborhood. We all enjoyed our vacation Thursday and Friday as Miss Hummel attended the institute." This is a clear reference to ongoing training sessions for the teacher to stay up to date on new pedagogy and educational topics showing the formalization and training required for women to pursue this profession. Very good condition. unknown books

MOTORIZED PRODUCE WAGON IN CINCINNATI OHIO
An original photograph circa 1915 of the motorized delivery wagon for John Holderfield & Sons a wholesale fruit and vegetable merchant. Hand-painted signage on the wagon shows that Holderfield operated two locations: 226 E. Pearl Street and 132 Sycamore Street in Cincinnati Ohio. According to a newspaper report John W. Holderfield 1866-1923 of Cincinnati founded the business but when his sons entered military service during World War I he consolidated his firm with R.A. Miller & Company.

The black and white image shows a man driving a motorized delivery truck that is loaded to bear with barrels. A logo is evident confirming that the truck is a Pierce. The first Pierce-Arrow truck was produced in January 1911. Pierce-Arrow's final attempt at the commercial market was in 1935 when they made 9- and 15-passenger sightseeing buses. The first motorized commercial truck was produced by Gottlieb Daimler in Germany in 1896. However it took more than a decade for businesses to transition from horse-drawn wagons and make the investment in motorized vehicles.

The 13 ½" x 10" black and white photograph is printed on glossy stock and is linen backed with a short caption affixed to the verso which requests to return to Mrs. Janet Ball of Canoga Park California alongside "John William Holderfield" and the date 1915. Additionally the address "3857 Eastern Ave." is written in pencil on the verso. unknown books

The Progress of his Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert through the Cape Colony British Kaffraria the Orange Free State and Port Natal in the year 1860
Cape Town: Saul Solomon 1861. Quarto. xii 180 pp. plus photographically illustrated titlepage and sixteen mounted albumen photographs. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards spine gilt with leather label. Light scattered foxing occasional faint offsetting from images. Photographs generally clean. Very good.

With some of the earliest photographic images from South Africa with a striking portrait of a Basuto Chief.

An early photographically illustrated book and the first such book printed on the African continent. The volume was made to commemorate the visit of Alfred Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha one of Queen Victoria's sons. The book was designed to showcase the colony which had hitherto been viewed in a less than positive light by the general British public. Prince Alfred was well-received by the colonists in South Africa and the volume contains many positive facts about the colony's usefulness to the British Empire. The book includes seventeen images by photographer Joseph Kirkman who was active in South Africa from 1859 to 1870. Some of the images in this volume are photographs of drawings or other artwork but others do capture live scenes along the Prince's route including a grand portrait of the African chief Moshesh and his advisors. The chief is pictured seated in the center of the image dressed in a top hat and suit holding a cane. The man seated next to him glowers at the camera and is draped in an animal pelt and holds a spear. Four men all in Western dress stand arrayed behind them. The images taken from life during the Prince's progress are as follows: Untitled image on the titlepage showing several men next to a rail car full of large rocks. In 1860 Kirkman and Frederick York were employed by the Government and the Harbour Board to photograph the tilting of the first truck of stone off the Breakwater by Prince Alfred. This is presumably an image from that scene. Graham's Town from the West The Reception of the Prince by a Burgher Escort near Queenstown The Prince's Interview with the Tambookies Moshesh and His Counsellors The Prince and His First Wildebeeste The Prince's Travelling Equipage A rare and interesting work and notable for being the first photographically illustrated book produced in Africa.

Not in The Truthful Lens. North Dakota: Unpublished 1930. Group of 17 images: two identified on back as "Matt Crowley Ranch" - Crowley a late 19th & early 20th century North Dakota Territory rancher and inductee of the Cowboy Hall of Fame - and a few others probably from the same location; with another identified as the Buchli ranch another Fargo ND area family with additional shots taken there; a group of 4 snapshots of a 'covered wagon' constructed on the body of a child's wagon in two levels with drawers and cubbyholes and posed with lariat and boots holster and big cowboy hat as props a charming piece of child's folk art of the American West; and a few miscellaneous shots one appears to be of a cattle branding with one man wearing a jacket identified as "Funk's Inc. "Butch"; another of children in a farm vehicle which looks like it's been set up to be a play theatre and another picture of an small explosion or result of gunfire in a barnyard a lone hen in the middle ground seemingly unperturbed; one photo at 4 7/8" x 6 3/4"; a few 3 1/2" x 5 3/4"; and the rest 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" apart from the 4 'wagon' shots at 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"; light wear generally taken well and with good detail; very good condition and interesting photographic ephemera from the 1930s Dakota area. .
