Eugene Smith holed up in a loft in New York's Chelsea in the Tin Pan Alley area. There over the next several years he became deeply embroiled in the New York City jazz scene opening his home as a practice and performance space for some of the great artists of mid-century jazz including Thelonious Monk Zoot Sims and many others. Of course he took pictures—both of musicians and of a window-size view of mid-century New York—and also wired the place for recording logging hours and hours of tape capturing the music and the talk around it. These photos and tapes had been thought lost—the stuff of rumor buried in Smith's archive—until Stephenson dug them out and culled the best along with transcriptions of material from the tapes for this landmark book. After the violence he witnessed as a combat photographer in WWII¸ Aarons decided that the only beaches he wanted to invade in the future were "decorated with beautiful girls tanning in a tranquil sun"-which are amply presented here. Aarons imparts a nearly tactile quality to these razor-sharp images and every photograph from the 1950s through the 1980s is richly evocative of its era. One 1955 photo captures longtime fashion icon C.Z. Guest poolside in typically modest mid-century swimming attire with her son and dogs. A 1964 spread for Town & Country pictures the deeply tanned "young matrons of Palm Beach" in day-glow floral Lilly Pulitzer dresses. In a 1968 picture fellow photographer Lord Lichfield is shown on the Italian Riviera wearing groovy yellow pants and flanked by Pucci-clad Italian princesses. Aaron's caption notes that "a photographer's life without a wife" seems to agree with the young cousin to Queen Elizabeth. While much of Aarons' work is focused on "horsey" types he also turns his lens on creative folks. A dashing Gore Vidal is pictured at his Italian villa the late Gianni Versace is shown at work in his home on Lake Como and Wanda Horowitz daughter of Arturo Toscanini is photographed at her father's podium at La Scala opera house in Milan. Around 1832 Parisian-born Charles-François Bossu 1813–1879 shed his unfortunate last name bossu means hunchback in French and adopted the pseudonym Marville. After achieving moderate success as an illustrator of books and magazines Marville shifted course in 1850 and took up photography a medium that had been introduced 11 years earlier. His poetic urban views detailed architectural studies and picturesque landscapes quickly garnered praise.By the end of the 1850s Marville had established a reputation as an accomplished and versatile photographer. From 1862 as official photographer for the city of Paris he documented aspects of the radical modernization program that had been launched by Emperor Napoleon III and his chief urban planner Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann. In this capacity Marville photographed the city’s oldest quarters and especially the narrow winding streets slated for demolition. Even as he recorded the disappearance of Old Paris Marville turned his camera on the new city that had begun to emerge. Many of his photographs celebrate its glamour and comforts while other views of the city’s desolate outskirts attest to the unsettling social and physical changes wrought by rapid modernization.
