Photograph Album Displaying the Plant Machinery and Production Processes of a Factory in Occupied Japan 1947
Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing-depending on the exact process-coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown books

LINTON'S RESTAURANT PICTURES. Snapshot Photo Booklet
Philadelphia n. d. Ca 1950s. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. Minor wear & staining to covers with some rust around the two staples. Photographs generally clean and sharp with a couple having some fading at the extremities. Overall Very Good. 11 b/w snapshot 3-1/2" square photographs scalloped edges bound in a stapled commerical Kodak yellow "Phototone Album Prints" booklet with "Linton's Restaurant pictures" written and circled in blue ballpoint ink to front cover. 3-3/4" x 4-1/2"

A snapshot portrait of the staff customers and interior of a Linton's Restaurant presumably one of the many located in Philadelphia. The images depict white & African-American staff in uniform while at work. behind the long food counter sitting/standing together on a coffee break washing dishes & cooking; a man in a suit who appears in two photos the owner; and a few rather hazy shots of the restaurant's seating area. The lot no doubt taken by an amateur photographer although one perhaps known to those photographed given the latter's generally relaxed & casual appearance. Linton's was a well-known chain of Philadelphia diners nearly from its founding in 1890 until 1981 when it became Linton's Food Management Services and closeded its restaurants. Linton's claimed the distinction of being the first air conditioned restaurant in Philadelphia in 1898 and in 1932 became the first to install a restaurant conveyor belt to transport food from the kitchen to the counter. By 1940 there were over 40 Linton's Restaurants operating in Philadelphia Camden and Atlantic City. from the Linton's website A nice primary visual source documenting one of Philadelphia's now-defunct blue-collar dining establishments as it appeared ~ 60 to 70 years ago. unknown books

California Photography
SIX HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS Of The WATSONVILLE SANATORIUM
Watsonville CA n. d. Ca early 1900s. All now housed in archival mylar sleeves. All show modest wear. Images generally clear & sharp. A solid VG lot. Divers sizes. 4 mounted.

Here offered a group of 6 early b/w photographs of the Watsonville Sanatorium also known as the Watsonville Sanitarium. None are dated or credited but all provide exterior views of this small community hospital in Northern California. The images include: • 6.5” x 5” photograph mounted on heavy black card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts immature plants in front. An identical photo was used in an advertisement that appeared on page 257 of The Official Register and Directory of Physicians and Surgeons in the State California published in 1903 by the California Medical Association. No address is given but the physician in charge is Dr. P.K. Waters and the facility is advanced as “A thoroughly Modern Hospital For the care of Surgical Medical and Maternity patients.” Some faint foxing. • 6.5” x 5” photograph mounted on heavy black card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts larger plants out front and the edge of a telephone pole seen. • 8” x 6” photograph mounted on heavy cream card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanitarium apparent dirt roads hitching posts white picket fence and a bungalow-type building that looks like a single family home. This is the only image where the building depicted varies from the others and it would appear to be the earliest photograph. • 8” x 6” photograph mounted on heavy black card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts mature plants in front telephone pole and raised flag. Nurses in Victorian-style dress appear on the porch. • 13.75” x 8.75” photograph not mounted sign unreadable building photographed from a different angle apparent dirt roads hitching posts mature plants in front telephone pole and a nurse in Victorian-style dress on the porch • 6.5” x 4.75” photograph not mounted sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts mature plants in front telephone pole. All in all a nice lot documenting this unknown books
