This interesting literary character founded the R.R. Bowker Company which still exists in 1872 co-founded "Library Journal" which also still exists in 1876 and acquired "Publishers' Weekly" you guessed it in 1879 -- among other lasting bookish and bibliographic endeavors. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1923 January 17. Addressed to "R.U.J." editor Robert Underwood Johnson 1853-1937. Flowery tribute to his friend on the occasion of Johnson's seventieth birthday. In part: "Certainly your 70 years have been crowded and crowned with honors as Secretary of the American Copyright League whose work will I hope be crowned by our entrance into the International Copyright Union before we pass over to the majority; as Editor of the Century; as Scribe of the Immortals himself immortalized in contiguity; and finally as Ambassador from his beloved country to the land of his love." This last refers to Johnson's 1920-21 term as U.S. ambassador to Italy. An unusual item from one giant in the world of editing to another. unknown

In 1927 this surgeon and urologist founded the revolutionary Hitchcock Clinic in Hanover New Hampshire -- the nation's first multi-speciality group practice -- and became its president in 1943 for many years; from 1927 until 1945 he also served as dean of the Dartmouth Medical School. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" Hanover NH 1967 April 14. Addressed to Basil O'Connor 1892-1972 FDR's well-known law partner. Very good. Two file holes along top not affecting text. On "Hitchcock Clinic" letterhead Bowler regrets missing O'Connor's 75th birthday party. In part: "A flagrant imposition -- but I am sending under separate cover a copy of proceedings at your 75th birthday luncheon in New York. Will you autograph it for me I would like to leave it for my grandchildren -- that I knew such a man. I regretted missing it more than I can tell you -- was starting on my way but big storm and no planes and got stuck. I have never read a comparable list of honors and decorations for contributions for the good of humanity. You must be very happy and can be justly proud." The first time the Henley Royal Regatta begun in 1839 in Henley-on-Thomas England was won by a non-Briton was when this 21-year-old American and a partner won the double sculls rowing event in 1927; in 1971 as president of Tedruth Plastics Corporation he unveiled the world's first allurethane boat a 10' craft that could be used as a sailboat motorboat or rowboat and supposedly remained afloat even flooded with water and carrying four passengers. Signed first Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Washington DC on November 2 1967 and with "First Day of Issue" noted. Near fine. Single 5-cent "The Biglin Brothers Racing -- Thomas Eakins" stamp depicting two rowers rowing at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Just left of the "sweet spot" Box signs large and bold in medium green marker. Quite unusual. unknown

The attributions of serveral of Boxall's acquisitions where controversial at their time. Some of them couldn't be substantiated as in the case of the so called "Suermondt Rembrandt". - With damages of the upper right and the lower left corners and traces of former mounting. No text loss

Beide Briefe an die Redaktion von "Velhagen und Klasings Monatsheften", die ihren Roman "Sieben Schwerter" in Fortsetzungen veröffentlichen wollte: "Beifolgend erhalten Sie den fertigen Roman 'Sieben Schwerdter'. Bis Seite 300 haben Sie das Werk gelesen, ich hoffe daß das letzte Drittel des Romanes Ihnen noch beßer gefällt als die ersten beiden Drittel. Nun die pecuniäre Frage. Herr Kröner [d. i. Adolf Kröner, der Herausgeber der "Gartenlaube"] hat mir für Rahel & Lea siebentausend Mark, Herr Bong & Comp achttausend Mark für 'Empor' gegeben. Der erstgenannte Roman ist ein Band von geringem Umfang, noch nicht halb so lang als die 'Sieben Schwerdter'. Herr Bong hat nach Rahel & Lea den Preis für 'Empor' ausgerechnet, der etwas länger ist. Die Summe welche ich mir heute, diesem Maßstab folgend für den vorliegenden Roman ausrechnete, kam auf 12,570 Mk. heraus. Ich kenne Ihre Honorare nicht, ich soll zum erstenmal mit Ihnen in Verbindung treten u. ich will keinesfalls, daß die Geldfrage ein Hinderniß sein soll [...]" (24. II. 1892). - "Den Auseinandersetzungen Ihres Briefes vom 1. d. bin ich aufmerksam gefolgt, der Richtigkeit vieler Ihrer Bemerkungen, dennoch aber würden diese allein mich nicht zum Entgegenkommen bestimmen. Für mich fällt ins Gewicht, daß ich zum ersten Mal bei Ihnen und vor Ihrem, als besonders gebildet bekanntem Leserkreis erscheine. Der ideelle Gewinn der mir daraus erwachsen kann und hoffentlich wird, steht mir höher als die Honorardifferenz zwischen Ihrem Angebot und meinem ursprünglichen Vorsatz, als Mindestpreis etwa zehntausend Mark zu nehmen. So hoffe ich denn, obgleich ich die Veröffentlichung in Monatsheften für nie so günstig halte, wie die in achttägig erscheinenden Journalen, daß Ihren Lesern die 'Sieben Schwerdter' gefallen mögen, und sehe der Überweisung des Honorars entgegen, von 9000 Mk. [...]" (3. III. 1892). - "Sieben Schwerter" erschien noch im selben Jahr als Fortsetzungsroman; "Rahel und Lea" war 1891 in der "Gartenlaube" erschienen; der Roman "Empor!" wurde 1892 von Bong & Co in Berlin publiziert.

Le pire et le meilleur de mon caractère se trouvent dans ces poèmes [etc ... ] ; deux coupures de presse montées en tête (articles de critique de l'ouvrage, dont la critique d'André Stirling : "il ne sera pas possible aux biographes de l'avenir, qui voudront parler de M.-P. Boyé, d'ignorer le cadre où s'écoula son enfance : certains châteaux d'Ile-de-France, et l'un d'eux surtout, caché dans son parc valloné, non loin de Chevreuse [ ... ]") ; une L.A.S. d'une page joint, datée de Neuilly, le 14 janvier 1934 : "Mon cher Ami, je n'entends plus parler de vous, mais je vous lis. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs Mitglied des Kriegspressequartiers und der Künstlerkriegsfürsorge, wurde er 1920 Pressechef an der staatlichen Filmhauptstelle. Norwegian-born American author whose 1874 novel "Gunnar" placed him on the literary map; his output of fiction and literary criticism almost equals that of his mentor William Dean Howells. Clipped signature and salutation 4 3/4" X 2" n.p. n.y. Very good. Mounting traces on verso. Large bold "Very truly yours / Hjalmar H. Boyesen." Verso bears a number of words in his hand as well. Rather uncommon. unknown

Interesting letter to the playwright Louis-Émile Vanderburch, concerning a collaboration with Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and asking him for an idea for a play or a finished piece for the carneval season: "Maintenant voici ce que j'ai à vous demander : N'auriez-vous pas dans la tête ou en portefeuille, un sujet très bouffe seulement en un acte, mais une idée d'un gros comique pouvant être donné en plein carnaval comme pièce de circonstance, ce qui permettrait de se livrer à toutes sortes d'excentricités que vous traiterez si fièrement avec votre esprit. C'est ce que je cherche, [...] et j'ai communiqué mon idée à Perrin, qui m'approuve et m'encourage. Si vous aviez ce que je demande, ce serait une bonne affaire, et nous aurions une jolie petite pochade qui serait jouée longtemps [...]". The "Perrin" mentioned is likely the artist and theatre director Émile Perrin who directed the Opéra-Comique from 1848 to 1857 and later briefly the Paris Opéra. Vanderburch (1794-1862) was a successful and prolific playwright, but no collaborations between Boïeldieu and Vanderburch are recorded. Boïeldieu did indeed collaborate with Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges (1799-1875) in the early 1840s. Saint-Georges is best known as the librettist of Donizetti's "La fille du régiment", Bizet's "La jolie fille de Perth", and his numerous co-authorships with Eugène Scribe. - On stationery with embossed monogram. Minor browning.
