BRIGHT, Jesse D. (1812-75) and WHITCOMB, James (1795-1852)
Signed Stone Lithograph
U.S. senators from Indiana. Most unusual item: single leaf 7¼" X 9¼" probably the frontispiece of an Indiana state history captioned "Indiana" at the top. Below this is a charming stone lithographed pastoral scene depicting a shirtless man in the foreground chopping down a tree vast fields extending behind him; the sun is just breaking over the horizon and a bull is romping playfully. Facsimile signatures of Indiana senators Albert S. White and Edward A. Hannegan appear below this. Their Senate terms overlapped from 1845 to '49 thus dating this frontispiece. Their two successors Bright who served 1845-62 and Whitcomb 1849-52 have each signed boldly beneath the facsimiles. Very good. Moderately foxed throughout but overall attractive. An interesting pairing of Hoosiers on an appropriate if odd item. Whitcomb died in office while Bright was expelled from the Senate for treason. unknown

Bright, John, British statesman (1811-1889).
Autograph letter signed. Rochdale, 8. I. 1869.
12mo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To W. W. H. Corbett of Birmingham: "Dear Sir, There is almost no patronage in my office, & there are more names down than can be admitted in 10 years. I believe other depart's are the same. The road is terribly crowded & full of disappointment. I advise you to stay in Birmingham - you will more easily get 10 good places there than one in a Gvt. depart't. To put your name down for a nomination would be of no use. You would be at the bottom of a long list, & should probably never be reached till you were beyond the age at which you could be admitted. I am sorry to give you no hope that I can help you [...]". - The Liberal statesman Bright, hailed as one of the greatest orators of his generation, served as MP for Birmingham from 1858 to 1889. In 1868 he had entered Gladstone's cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. - From the collection of John Henderson (1862-1938), the long-serving secretary of the National Liberal Club.

Inspired by the beauty and history of the city, Brindisi painted "Salzburg - Mozartplatz" in 1956. - The inscription was written to thank Fuhrmann for his presentation. The "biographical note" in German with its added underlinings and annotations probably served Fuhrmann for his presentation. - Well preserved.

There is only one slip which I should like to point out: in part 2 of page 2 (of the translation of our interview), where I talk about expressing experience in different languages, it is much more concrete and thus better adaptable for the philosophic and the abstract: first I think ‘emotional threshold’ is a better expression of my thoughts than ‘pressure’. But much more importantly, I was referring to ENGLISH as being more suited to philosophical and abstract thought, NOT Afrikaans! Autograph letter signed. 9, rue de Douai [Paris], 1. III. 1888.
8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To an unidentified editor, asking him to reprint an article from the French daily "L'Estafette" about the first concert of his son Henri ten Brink, a student of the Belgian violin virtuoso Martin-Pierre Marsick: "Mon fils Henri, élève de Marsick, vient de faire ses débuts dans le monde musical et a obtenu un beau succès. Je vous serais reconnaissant si vous vouliez bien reproduire le petit article ci-inclus et découpé dans l'Estafette". - Jules ten Brink was a student of Auguste Dupont in Brussels and Ernst Friedrich Richter in Leipzig. He worked as a bandmaster in Lyon from 1860 to 1868 and later as a piano teacher and composer in Paris. After his studies in Paris, Henri ten Brink (1856-1920) emigrated to South Africa, where he worked as a musician and composer. - Minor browning. Well preserved. No distracting recipient's name/address present -- but Brinkley signs near the "sweet spot" boldly and attractively in blue fountain pen. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. Accompanied by a fine 7" X 9" glossy publicity portrait showing a determined arms-crossed Brinkley in 1984 -- accompanying printed caption notes "ABC News correspondent David Brinkley will share anchor duties with Peter Jennings for 'The '84 Vote' coverage of the Democratic National Convention." Brion, Marcel, French novelist, critic, and art historian (1895-1984).
5 autograph letters signed. Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Nervi (Genua), and Marcillat-en-Combraille, ca. 1935-1959.
Various formats. Altogether 10 pp. Correspondence with the publisher and librarian Maurice Delamain, his wife, and Delamain's publishing company Stock in Paris. The earliest letter, dated 18 March, concerns Brion's historical biography "Théodoric, roi des Ostrogoths" (Payot, 1935). Brion is glad that the Baltic German philosopher Hermann von Keyserling (1880-1946) was willing to read the book and informs Delamain that he asked his publisher to send a copy to Keyserling as well as to Delamain himself, as he was also hoping for him to comment on the book: "A writer is lucky to have two readers such as Keyserling [and you] and if, by any chance, this Théodoric does not discourage you from reading other historical books that I have written, I am infinitely happy to send them to you [...]" (transl.). Delamain was Keyserling's French publisher from 1933. - A letter dated 15 November that reached Stock on 20 November 1944 concerns a translation of the Danish novelist Jens Peter Jacobsen. Brion, who had proposed to Stock a translation of Jacobsen's short stories, reacts to the information that they were already working on a publication with Lucien Maury: "I have seen too many examples of such clashes of translations to feel too much of a disappointment reading your letter. Indeed, I am glad I did not offer my translation of J. P. J.'s novels to any publisher other than you, which would have provoked a 'double' [...]". He mentions the competing Whitman translations of Louis Fabulet and Léon Bazalgette as an example, underscoring that he has "no intention of entering in a competition with Mr Lucien Maury", whom he praises as an experienced translator. Brion offers his thoughts on Jacobsen and his support of the publication "in all the journals to which I have access [...]". Maury's translation of Jacobsen for Stock did not go forward, after all, nor did Brion's translations. In February 1946, Brion offered his novel "La rose de cire" to Delamain, which was ultimately published by Albin Michel in 1964. In the second part of the letter, Brion mentions that Maury wrote to him about "difficulties with paper" delaying the publication of his Jacobsen translation and lauds Maury's biography of Victoria Benedictsson. - The remaining letters in the collection are of a more personal nature. On 21 January 1959, Brion thanks Delamain for a gift: "a noble alcohol is the natural complement to a beautiful book, and I congratulate you on creating both the one and the other equally perfectly", also sending greetings to his wife. The only letter written to Delamain's wife, dated 11 May, concerns the cancellation of a meeting. - The letter mentioning Keyserling shows continuous tears along the borders causing minor text loss, with notes in pencil and strong browning. The remaining letters have occasional minor tears, creases, and minor browning.

British Bengal Army
Signed Certificate of Appointment - Dr. John Campbell Bow, Surgeon to Our Forces.
17 August 1862. Official certificate of appointment issued by the British Armed Forces to Dr. John Campbell Bow, Esq. as "Surgeon to Our Forces." Document measures approximately 16 x 12 inches, completed in manuscript, signed by an officer of the War Office, witnessed in the hand of a Field Marshall, and bearing the paper seal of Queen Victoria. Filing annotations to verso are dated Bengal, 17 April 1863. Stamped at the War office in London 11.5.1866 together with a ten shilling embossed revenue stamp. Fascinating document, assigning a new surgeon to the Bengal Army subsequent to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, during the British Crown's re-structuring of administration and rule over the Indian subcontinent, and implementation of the British Raj The Bengal Army was the army of the Bengal Presidency, one of the three presidencies of the British Raj within the British Empire. The Sepoy rebellion was a result of various grievances, and ultimately led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. Manuscript

British Government Official Act of Parliament
Manuscript Edict - Tolls for Road Building
London, 1736. Official Act of Parliament issued by the British Government, to explain and amend a previous act for the repairing and enlarging of county roads in the environs of Rochester in Medway and Maidstone in Kent. Folio. 5 pages, with two woodcuts engravings, one being the national arms of King George II. Printed in 1736 by John Baskett, Printer to the King, on three leafs, laid paper, measuring approximately 19 x 28,5 cm. Minor loss to bottom left margin, unobtrusive to text, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, clean and bright. The present document suggests the government's plans and support toward the development of the town of Maidstone, exempting road builders, farmers, gardeners and town residents of road tolls and carriage duties previously payable, and presumably, still applicable elsewhere. At the Westminster Parliament 14 January 1734, King George II instituted "An Act for repairing and enlarging the Road" from Rochester to Maidstone, and others in Kent, by charging tolls and cargo taxes. The act was extended on 15 January 1735, and amended in 1736, the details of which are described herein. [During the English Civil War, the Battle of Maidstone took place in 1648, resulting in a victory for the Parliamentarians. Andrew Broughton, who was Mayor of Maidstone in 1649 declared the death sentence on Charles I, and today a plaque in Maidstone Town Centre memorialises Broughton as "Mayor and Regicide". Paper mills, stone quarrying, brewing and the cloth industry have all flourished here. The paper maker James Whatman and his son invented wove paper (Whatman paper) at Turkey Mill from 1740, an important development in the history of printing which took place only four years after the making of this document.] Excerpts from the document: "An act to explain and amend an Act passed in the first year of the Reign of His present Majesty...for repairing and enlarging the road leading from the House called The Sign of the Bells, in the Parish of St. Margaret un Rochester, to Maidstone, and other Roads therein mentioned in the County of Kent." "... several persons, carriages, matters, and things are exempted and discharged from the payment of the several Tolls and Duties to be taken at the several Gates and Turnpikes to be erected by virtue of the said Act..." "... after the twenty fifth day of March, one thousand seven hundred and thirty six, no person or persons shall be charged... any tolls or duties... who shall pass... with any Carriage carrying any stones, gravel, or other materials, for repairing roads or highways, or any dung, sand, grit or mould for manuring of lands or gardens, nor any horses, waggons, wasns, carts or other carriages carrying undried hops from the hop-grounds to the kilns... in or about Maidstone... nor for carriages carrying hay or fodder to be laid up in the houses, hut-houses, barns or stables of the several inhabitants..." "And it be further enacted... so much of the highway or pass-road leading from Rochester to the town of Maidstone, as lies between a place called The Lady Taylor's White Gate... and the way-post now standing at the north end of the said town..." End excerpts.

British Marine
Account of the Portuguese Belenzada Affair During the Counter-Revolution Begun by Queen Maria II of Portugal
Primary source account of the Belenzada Affair, by a British marine serving on HMS Cornwallis (1813) and participating in the event at Lisbon, describing daily and hourly actions taking place during the counter-revolution begun by Queen Maria II. Annotated by a contemporary transcriber who seems to be a friend of the diarist and presumably the recipient of the original letter, to front upper margin: "Extract Private letter" and to the end leaf: "Novr. 3d 1836 Revolution at Lisbon Copy of Wms Report of it". 8vo. 7 pages in manuscript. Two double leafs measuring approximately 21 x 26,5 cm. Occasional creasing, very minor loss to first leaf, not affecting legibility of context, otherwise in very good condition. The Belenzada, also known as the Belém Affair, was an attempted coup in November 1836 by Queen Maria II of Portugal and her husband Prince Ferdinand II, to remove the liberal government which had been established by the September Revolution, and to reinstate the Constitutional Charter of 1826. Despite enjoying diplomatic support from the United Kingdom and Belgium, the attempt was frustrated by the determination of the National Guard, the regular army and the general population of Lisbon. This primary source document provides a superbly detailed chronical of events of one counter-revolution in Imperial Portugal, initiated by Queen Maria II herself, as a response to the uprising of the Setembrismo and Cartismo movement to end the political "devorismo" ('devourism') as it was termed at the time. The event is all-but-forgotten by Western historians, albeit said to be one of the three most important of conspiracies or plots executed during this period of unrelenting political conflict. Britten, Benjamin, English composer, conductor, and pianist (1913-1976).
8 autograph (7 lettercards and 1 letter) signed ("Ben"). Apparently Aldeburgh, Suffolk, ca. 1969.
Oblong (small) 8vo. 16 pages on 8 ff. All with printed letterhead. Interesting, apparently unpublished correspondence detailing Britten's collaboration with the Revd. Kenneth Sherlock (1901-90), rector of St Bartholomew's Church, Orford, in Woodbridge, Suffolk, where all three "Parables for Church Performance" ("Curlew River", "The Burning Fiery Furnace", and "The Prodigal Son") were performed. Britten is very warm in tone to Sherlock and, in a number of letters, alludes to his declining health, which continued to deteriorate until his death in 1976. - 1) A somewhat philosophical letter about Russia, the Russian people and the human spirit generally and further mentioning a forthcoming tour of Germany and Austria. 2 pp. On headed paper ("The Red House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk"). - The remainder on personalised correspondence cards. - 2+3) About Curlew River: "It was wonderful being able to do Curlew River in your wonderful church […] I'm just off to Holland, after having whizzed up north with Rostropovich […]"; "It is lovely that Curlew River can be back where it belongs in 1965!". - 4) Mentioning "The Prodigal Son": "All goes well here now - only a lot of patience is needed! BRITTON, John (1771-1857)
Autograph Letter Signed
One of England's most memorable antiquaries and its foremost architectural critic and historian who practically created the genre authoring and editing such large multi-volume works as "Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain" 1805-14 "Cathedral Antiquities of England" 1814-35 "Architectural Antiquities of Normandy" 1825-27 "Picturesque Antiquities of English Cities" 1830 and others. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 6¼" n.p. n.y. "Wednesday Morning". Very good. Ever-so-slightly age toned and lightly soiled. Addressed to his old friend William Jerdan 1782-1869 Scottish author and journalist long-time editor of "The Literary Gazette" 1817-51. Certainly writing to Jerdan during his "Literary Gazette" editorship Britton notes in part: "I inclose the first copy of a pamphlet for your acceptance hope you will have an opportunity to read parts of it before your next publication. It is the first prose productions of a young Gentleman who has shewn first rate talents in composition & therefore owe you will be pleased to know more of & I shall have much pleasure to introduce him to you. I am persuaded you will approve of the tone and sentiments of this pamphlet." One wonders what the "prose productions" were and who this "young Gentleman" may have been. Accompanied by an outstanding steel-engraved portrait of Britton 4¼" X 6½" London England 1820. Published by J. Asperne for the 1 April 1820 edition of the "European Magazine" this heavy stock portrait depicts Britton seated at a desk drawing architectural plans with a quill pen as he gazes at the viewer; two volumes of his "Cathedral Antiquities of England" may be seen on the table and rows of books and literary busts fill the background. A nice example of this uncommon autograph and a superb portrait. unknown

BRIVES-CAZES, Emile
