‎British Bengal Army‎

‎Signed Certificate of Appointment - Dr. John Campbell Bow, Surgeon to Our Forces.‎

‎17 August 1862. Official certificate of appointment issued by the British Armed Forces to Dr. John Campbell Bow, Esq. as "Surgeon to Our Forces." Document measures approximately 16 x 12 inches, completed in manuscript, signed by an officer of the War Office, witnessed in the hand of a Field Marshall, and bearing the paper seal of Queen Victoria. Filing annotations to verso are dated Bengal, 17 April 1863. Stamped at the War office in London 11.5.1866 together with a ten shilling embossed revenue stamp. Fascinating document, assigning a new surgeon to the Bengal Army subsequent to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, during the British Crown's re-structuring of administration and rule over the Indian subcontinent, and implementation of the British Raj The Bengal Army was the army of the Bengal Presidency, one of the three presidencies of the British Raj within the British Empire. The Sepoy rebellion was a result of various grievances, and ultimately led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. Manuscript‎

‎British Government Official Act of Parliament‎

‎Manuscript Edict - Tolls for Road Building‎

‎London, 1736. Official Act of Parliament issued by the British Government, to explain and amend a previous act for the repairing and enlarging of county roads in the environs of Rochester in Medway and Maidstone in Kent. Folio. 5 pages, with two woodcuts engravings, one being the national arms of King George II. Printed in 1736 by John Baskett, Printer to the King, on three leafs, laid paper, measuring approximately 19 x 28,5 cm. Minor loss to bottom left margin, unobtrusive to text, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, clean and bright. The present document suggests the government's plans and support toward the development of the town of Maidstone, exempting road builders, farmers, gardeners and town residents of road tolls and carriage duties previously payable, and presumably, still applicable elsewhere. At the Westminster Parliament 14 January 1734, King George II instituted "An Act for repairing and enlarging the Road" from Rochester to Maidstone, and others in Kent, by charging tolls and cargo taxes. The act was extended on 15 January 1735, and amended in 1736, the details of which are described herein. [During the English Civil War, the Battle of Maidstone took place in 1648, resulting in a victory for the Parliamentarians. Andrew Broughton, who was Mayor of Maidstone in 1649 declared the death sentence on Charles I, and today a plaque in Maidstone Town Centre memorialises Broughton as "Mayor and Regicide". Paper mills, stone quarrying, brewing and the cloth industry have all flourished here. The paper maker James Whatman and his son invented wove paper (Whatman paper) at Turkey Mill from 1740, an important development in the history of printing which took place only four years after the making of this document.] Excerpts from the document: "An act to explain and amend an Act passed in the first year of the Reign of His present Majesty...for repairing and enlarging the road leading from the House called The Sign of the Bells, in the Parish of St. Margaret un Rochester, to Maidstone, and other Roads therein mentioned in the County of Kent." "... several persons, carriages, matters, and things are exempted and discharged from the payment of the several Tolls and Duties to be taken at the several Gates and Turnpikes to be erected by virtue of the said Act..." "... after the twenty fifth day of March, one thousand seven hundred and thirty six, no person or persons shall be charged... any tolls or duties... who shall pass... with any Carriage carrying any stones, gravel, or other materials, for repairing roads or highways, or any dung, sand, grit or mould for manuring of lands or gardens, nor any horses, waggons, wasns, carts or other carriages carrying undried hops from the hop-grounds to the kilns... in or about Maidstone... nor for carriages carrying hay or fodder to be laid up in the houses, hut-houses, barns or stables of the several inhabitants..." "And it be further enacted... so much of the highway or pass-road leading from Rochester to the town of Maidstone, as lies between a place called The Lady Taylor's White Gate... and the way-post now standing at the north end of the said town..." End excerpts.‎

‎British Marine‎

‎Account of the Portuguese Belenzada Affair During the Counter-Revolution Begun by Queen Maria II of Portugal‎

‎Primary source account of the Belenzada Affair, by a British marine serving on HMS Cornwallis (1813) and participating in the event at Lisbon, describing daily and hourly actions taking place during the counter-revolution begun by Queen Maria II. Annotated by a contemporary transcriber who seems to be a friend of the diarist and presumably the recipient of the original letter, to front upper margin: "Extract Private letter" and to the end leaf: "Novr. 3d 1836 Revolution at Lisbon Copy of Wms Report of it". 8vo. 7 pages in manuscript. Two double leafs measuring approximately 21 x 26,5 cm. Occasional creasing, very minor loss to first leaf, not affecting legibility of context, otherwise in very good condition. The Belenzada, also known as the Belém Affair, was an attempted coup in November 1836 by Queen Maria II of Portugal and her husband Prince Ferdinand II, to remove the liberal government which had been established by the September Revolution, and to reinstate the Constitutional Charter of 1826. Despite enjoying diplomatic support from the United Kingdom and Belgium, the attempt was frustrated by the determination of the National Guard, the regular army and the general population of Lisbon. This primary source document provides a superbly detailed chronical of events of one counter-revolution in Imperial Portugal, initiated by Queen Maria II herself, as a response to the uprising of the Setembrismo and Cartismo movement to end the political "devorismo" ('devourism') as it was termed at the time. The event is all-but-forgotten by Western historians, albeit said to be one of the three most important of conspiracies or plots executed during this period of unrelenting political conflict. ‎Britten, Benjamin, English composer, conductor, and pianist (1913-1976).‎

‎8 autograph (7 lettercards and 1 letter) signed ("Ben"). Apparently Aldeburgh, Suffolk, ca. 1969.‎

‎Oblong (small) 8vo. 16 pages on 8 ff. All with printed letterhead. Interesting, apparently unpublished correspondence detailing Britten's collaboration with the Revd. Kenneth Sherlock (1901-90), rector of St Bartholomew's Church, Orford, in Woodbridge, Suffolk, where all three "Parables for Church Performance" ("Curlew River", "The Burning Fiery Furnace", and "The Prodigal Son") were performed. Britten is very warm in tone to Sherlock and, in a number of letters, alludes to his declining health, which continued to deteriorate until his death in 1976. - 1) A somewhat philosophical letter about Russia, the Russian people and the human spirit generally and further mentioning a forthcoming tour of Germany and Austria. 2 pp. On headed paper ("The Red House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk"). - The remainder on personalised correspondence cards. - 2+3) About Curlew River: "It was wonderful being able to do Curlew River in your wonderful church […] I'm just off to Holland, after having whizzed up north with Rostropovich […]"; "It is lovely that Curlew River can be back where it belongs in 1965!". - 4) Mentioning "The Prodigal Son": "All goes well here now - only a lot of patience is needed! Don't worry - somehow there will be a Prodigal Son in Orford Church in time! [...]". - 5) Thanking Sherlock for his support: "It is always a real joy for us to come and work in Orford Church - not least because of your own unfailing kindness and deep understanding of what we are trying to do [...]". - 6) "Peter and I are just off to USSR via London for a month or so, so I am afraid a meeting about next year will have to wait till September. But Stephen R. can in the meantime give you all our proposals for next year's Festival at Orford [...]". - 7) "I am here for a week or so (before going off to Helsinki, + to USSR again) [...]". - 8) "What a wonderful lot of flowers - how cheering to be reminded that spring and health will not be far away! I was very touched by them [...]". - Letter 1 shows slight separation to the lower fold; 2 to 8 in excellent condition. Not in the Collected Letters, Volume 6 (1966-1976), ed. by Philip Reed & Mervyn Cooke.‎

‎BRITTON, John (1771-1857)‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎One of England's most memorable antiquaries and its foremost architectural critic and historian who practically created the genre authoring and editing such large multi-volume works as "Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain" 1805-14 "Cathedral Antiquities of England" 1814-35 "Architectural Antiquities of Normandy" 1825-27 "Picturesque Antiquities of English Cities" 1830 and others. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 6¼" n.p. n.y. "Wednesday Morning". Very good. Ever-so-slightly age toned and lightly soiled. Addressed to his old friend William Jerdan 1782-1869 Scottish author and journalist long-time editor of "The Literary Gazette" 1817-51. Certainly writing to Jerdan during his "Literary Gazette" editorship Britton notes in part: "I inclose the first copy of a pamphlet for your acceptance hope you will have an opportunity to read parts of it before your next publication. It is the first prose productions of a young Gentleman who has shewn first rate talents in composition & therefore owe you will be pleased to know more of & I shall have much pleasure to introduce him to you. I am persuaded you will approve of the tone and sentiments of this pamphlet." One wonders what the "prose productions" were and who this "young Gentleman" may have been. Accompanied by an outstanding steel-engraved portrait of Britton 4¼" X 6½" London England 1820. Published by J. Asperne for the 1 April 1820 edition of the "European Magazine" this heavy stock portrait depicts Britton seated at a desk drawing architectural plans with a quill pen as he gazes at the viewer; two volumes of his "Cathedral Antiquities of England" may be seen on the table and rows of books and literary busts fill the background. A nice example of this uncommon autograph and a superb portrait. unknown‎

‎Broca, Paul, physician and anatomist (1824-1880).‎

‎Autograph letter signed. Paris, 20. IV. 1872.‎

‎8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. To a colleague, concerning the establishment of the "Association française pour l'avancement des sciences" and its future statutes and organisation. The Association is intended later to be consolidated with the "Association scientifique de France", then under the presidency of the astronomer Urbain Le Verrier, who - as Broca notes - is willing to resign from this position to enable the merger. Three representatives of both associations have already met to discuss the principal issues: the chemist Charles A. Wurtz, the physicist Alfred Cornu, and Broca himself. Broca further informs his correspondent about their quest for a suitable location for the new association's first conference, and for the necessary support by the local scientists: Lyon, Lille, and Bordeaux all seem possibles. Broca, the self-declared Gironist, proposes to sound out the situation in Bordeaux: "M. Leverrier avait dit que si la ree[li]gibilité des présidents faisait obstacle à la fusion, il était prêt à donner sa démission [...] Je suis toujours Girondin, et ce serait un titre honorable pour la cité Bordelaise, qui aspire fortement à devenir la capitale scientifique du sud ouest, d'avoir été le siege de la première session de l'association française [...]". - The "Association française pour l'avancement des sciences" (AFAS) was founded later that same year. It was recognized as being of public benefit a few years later and finally fused with the "Association scientifique de France" in 1884. - Paul Broca is best known for his research on "Broca's area", a region of the frontal lobe that is named after him. His work revealed that the brains of patients suffering from aphasia contained lesions in a particular part of the cortex, in the left frontal region. This was the first anatomical proof of localization of brain function. Broca's work also contributed to the development of physical anthropology, advancing the science of anthropometry. - Very slightly brownstained. With the writer's raised monogram "PB".‎

‎Autograph letter signed. Paris, [1872].‎

‎8vo. 2 pp. On headed stationery of the École des Hautes Études, Laboratoire d'Anthropologie. A "personal letter" in which Broca states the ongoing debate among the members of the "Association française pour l'avancement des sciences" (AFAS), founded in 1872, about which city - Lyon, Lille, or Bordeaux - might be the most suitable location to host the Association's first conference. The letter also provides insights into the municipalities' reactions. Bordeaux, apparently favoured by Broca, is objected to by the physiologist Claude Bernard, who prefers Lyon, but the reaction from Lyon appears to have been unenthusiastic due to financial constraints: "Bordeaux a passé à l'avancement, mais non sans quelques objections de Claude Bernard qui tenais pour Lyon. Les Lyonnais ne nous avaient fais d'abord qu'un accueil trop froid pour cette année à cause de leur compte Médical pour lequel ils avaient des inquiétudes [...]". - Paul Broca is best known for his research on "Broca's area", a region of the frontal lobe that is named after him. And as I am silly enough to be depressed by this fact more than would be adequate, my physical condition is also somewhat un-brilliant. My bouts of tiredness are rather abnormal and I battle them with vitamins, hormones, iron, calcium preparations, sometimes not altogether without success [...]" (29 Nov. 1950). Other letters contain extensive ruminations on the humanities and various novels. An undated carbon copy contains Broch's evaluation of Zuckerkandl's then-current research project with six-line greetings: "Dearest, I hope you approve of the following. MS to follow, if possible (even if it embitters the author - it usually does) with my notes of commentary [...]".‎

‎BROCK Emma L. 1886 1974‎

‎Original Book Illustration Art‎

‎This noted Montana-born children's book author and illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" her first book 1929 and 35 others most published by Knopf: "The Greedy Goat" "Drusilla" "The Topsy-Turvy Family" "Mr. Wren's House" and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink and watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated but not authored by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King" published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930 when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 slightly translucent leaves each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top approximately 13" X 17" 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings six signed by Brock at lower margin and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings bearing the hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption which often differs from the caption that appears in the published book. Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling most about edges and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work. unknown books‎
