All workers care for that very much - very much". - A beautiful autograph by the creator of "The Secret Garden" and "Little Lord Fauntleroy", written soon after her permanent return to the United States. In 1908 her house in Plandome Manor about 3.5 miles south of Sands Point was completed. - Traces of folds. On stationery with printed letterhead: "Elm Heights / Port Washington / Long Island", with "Elm Heights" stricken out and corrected to "Sands Point".

At the center Burns pens large and bold in blue ballpoint "Best -- / George Burns." Small portion or original transmittal envelope also present. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. Nice recap of his father's work reading in part: "There is just published an anthology of father's writings -- 'John Burroughs America' -- Devin-Adair Co -- I could recommend 'Riverby' 'Far & Near' or 'Camping & Tramping with Roosevelt.' Dr Clara Barrus wrote 'Whitman & Burroughs' -- also in her 'Life & Letters of John Burroughs' there is much about their friendship." Address portion also penned in Burroughs' hand. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um einen Sohn des Lehrers und Schulschriftstellers Johann Christoph Gottleber (1733-85), der 1763-71 das Lyzeum von Annaberg geleitet hatte. - Johann Friedrich Burscher war nach einer Anstellung in der Privatbibliothek Heinrich von Bünaus ab 1764 außerordentlicher und 1768 ordentlicher Professor der Theologie an der Universität Lepizig und mehrfacher Universitätsrektor. Er ist ein später Vertreter der lutherischen Orthodoxie. - Mit mehreren kleinen Seiteneinrissen und Spuren von alter Montage. Gefaltet.

High quality modern glossy black and white print of a WW2-era photograph of Burschgens crouched atop his plane's cockpit. In a light area at upper right he signs boldly in black fineline adding the military abbreviation "7/J.G.26S." 7 Jagdgeschwader 26 Schlageter. A great example signed later in life. unknown

Dankt Josef Wesely für ihm übersandte Geburtstagswünsche. - Hermann Strübe, so Burte mit bürgerlichem Namen, studierte in Paris den französischen Impressionismus, war mit einem Volksroman bei einem Preisausschreiben erfolgreich und wählte den Namen des Helden als Pseudonym. Fortan als Schriftsteller und Maler tätig, erschien 1912 “unter dem Eindruck der Vorkriegsstimmung der völkisch-nationalistische Heimatroman ‘Wiltfeber, der ewige Deutsche’, in dem durch die Verehrung eines aristokratischen Führers und das Streben nach Erneuerung des Volkstums wesentliche Elemente der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie vorweggenommen wurden. Willig übernahm er die Rolle eines Propagandadichters und rechtfertigte die Judenverfolgung. Nach dem Krieg wurde sein nationalsozialistisches Engagement weitgehend ausgeklammert, und er blieb in seiner süddeutschen Heimat geschätzt” (DBE), wurde 1957 gar mit der Jean-Paul-Medaille ausgezeichnet. To Colonel Montgomery, referencing the success of the "Arabian Nights": "[...] To my great astonishment The Nights has hit the public taste: it has of later years been so stuffed with goody-goody, namby-pamby Maria-Matilda that it wants 'strong meat' and by Jove it has got it. We had the pleasure of seeing my good friend Thayer here and I (unhappily) forgot to put his name down for the Athenaeum Club - London without a club is like a park without games. We are both living well under influence of beef and port (wine) and shudder at the lean flesh pots of Trieste (veal) [...]". - Burton published his famous translation of the "Arabian Nights" ("The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night") in a private printing for the Kama Shashtra Society in 1885. The private publication, by subscription only, was necessary to avoid Victorian obscenity strictures. - Reinforcement at fold, a little smudging to signatures.

3 pp. Small 8vo. To the publisher and author George Bentley (1828-95), complaining that his "letter has certainly miscarried. I accept the conditions provided we print at once [...]". He asks for an "agreement to settle at the end of six months or a year and to allow me a dozen copies for friends. Could we manage to print without destroying the two old volumes. Of course you can take them to pieces and I will have them rebound when you have done with them [...]". He continues, "For corrections a single revise will suffice. Kindly let me have proofs in duplicate accompanied by the manuscript - which saves time [...]." He asks his opinion on illustration, and repeats that he has sketches and photographs suggesting that "perhaps the best way would be to prefix one to each volume, say Sir Charles Napier to vol. I and the photo of a Sindi girl to vol. 2 [...]". He offers to send them off at once if it suits.

He mentions enclosing "a pamphlet showing the result of my last Expedition" - perhaps one of his visits to the Middle East or West Africa hunting gold - before reporting his wife's illnesses, and asking if a "Sale" is related "to the Sir Robert of Jelealabad" (i.e., Sir Robert Henry Sale, who died in 1845 as commander of the garrison of Jalalabad). "Is there any thing I can do for your here? [...] Any chance of any of you coming to Trieste? [...]" - Old horizontal fold; traces of mounting at lower edge of pp. 2 and 3. A well-preserved example.

Bertelli, requesting a copy of the "New York American avec cet interview". - Due to his widely ranging personal contacts, Vladimir Bourtzeff managed to expose numerous Russian spies and agents provocateurs. "In Chicago I had the opportunity of meeting the famous Russian revolutionary Vladimir Bourtzeff. I was greatly interested in his recital of the arduous mission that had come to him of unmasking Azeff as a police spy. Azeff was undoubtedly a most exceptional phenomenon in revolutionary annals. Not that there had not been before, or since, traitors in revolutionary ranks. But Azeff was no ordinary spy, and even today the psychology of the man remains an unsolved enigma. For years he had not only been a member of the Fighting Organization of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party of Russia, but also the all-powerful head of that terrorist body. He had planned and had successfully executed numerous acts against the highest dignitaries of the Tsarist Government, and he enjoyed the absolute confidence of all his co-workers. When Bourtzeff charged Azeff, the ultra-terrorist, with being an agent of the Russian Secret Service, even the nearest friends of the accuser thought him demented. The mere suggestion of such a possibility was considered treason to the revolution, for Azeff personified the very spirit of the Russian revolutionary movement. Bourtzeff, however, was a man of dogged tenacity who possessed an unerring intuition in such matters. He had exposed a number of spies previously, and his sources of information had always proved to be entirely reliable. Yet even he underwent a long inner struggle before he could bring himself to believe in the guilt of the trusted head of the Fighting Organization The data Bourtzeff secured were incontrovertible and damned Azeff as a man who had during a period of twenty years managed to dupe the Russian Secret Service and the revolutionists at the same time. Bourtzeff succeeded in proving Azeff a traitor to both sides, and both resolved to punish Azeff by death for his monumental deceit. Beginning of a letter to an unidentified recipient: "Dear Sir / I am truly grieved that my request should have weighed upon your mind in any way, and I most lament having made it at all if it is inductive of pain to you - so, however much I may regret losing the really valuable transcripts of your unsophisticated mind I would rather forgo that pleasure than cause you to be forced back upon scenes and feelings which are too much for your strength. You cannot think how really refreshing it is to read any thing which is perfectly natural, which bears no marks of what is called composition about it - but is the genuine portrait (if I may be allowed to expression) of feelings and thoughts [...] I am very much occupied - almost too much so - but I believe one must not look back or forwards but do diligently every hour what we are called upon to do, and if we act thus under the eye of God by the grace of Jesus Christ, the past and the future will take care of themselves. 'But who is sufficient for these things?' No one does what they ought; we can all preach but who is there that practises? Not I God knows, I am perhaps just beginning to be a good child as I am going on into second childhood. - You will be sorry to hear that Mr Bury has had but indifferent health and it is a constant source of anxiety to me [...] My work 'Flirtation' has a great many enemies - but I think it tends to good, and good only, so I care not - one must make up one's mind to being shot at when one sets up a target - everybody who runs a literary career will meet with these rebuffs. They are fearful at first, but secure of one's motive they become merely gnats, in a summer's eve. - I have begun a very great book - I do not trust in my own strength to bring it to good issue but in that of Him who inspired me with the idea to undertake it [...]". - Traces of folds with slight tears.

Désiré, the daughter of a former stage partner of Alexis. Although Désiré already performed at Péricaud's theatre, probably at the Ambigu, Alexis was hoping for a proper engagement, praising her as a natural talent for 'grisette' roles: "Je viens gaillardement vous prier de m'ête agréable ne doutant pas de votre bonne volonté à satisfaire ma demande. Si cela se peut. Je viens donc recommander Mme Désiré qui joue chez vous au cachet et que je voudrais voir attachée sérieusement a un théâtre avec un egagement. C'est la fille de Châtelet qui a été à Bordeaux mon camarade et ami, je suis très liée avec la mère et la sœur Mme D'Herblay. Mme Désiré a beaucoup de naturel dans les rôles grivais et pourrait sans doute tenir sa place, enfin elle n'est pas heureuse et cela me donne la hardiesse de vous la recommander, ainsi qu'au bon Monsieur Mégneux qui j'en suis certaine fera comme vous et se souviendra de la vieille artiste Alexis, qui vous prie d'agréer [...]". - Despite the misspelling, the recipient can be identified based on greetings addressed to Louis Péricaud's later wife Honorine Camous. - Traces of folds.
