"Aufwärts aus dieser Nacht steigt unser Pfad, | Denn ein Emporgang ist das Erdenleben [...]". - Carrière habilitierte sich 1842 in Gießen und hielt dort populäre Vorlesungen zu philosophischen und literarischen Themen. Nachdem er sein vielbeachtetes Werk ‚Die philosophische Weltanschauung der Reformationszeit in ihren Beziehungen zur Gegenwart‘ (1847) veröffentlicht hatte, erhielt er den Titel eines ao. Professors. 1853 folgte er seinem Schwiegervater Justus von Liebig nach München, wo er zunächst Honorarprofessor an der Universität, dann Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Kunstakademie und endlich 1887 Universitätsprofessor der Ästhetik wurde. Seit 1889 war er Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. - Gefaltet.

Would you kindly show it to any friend of yours, whom you think it might suit? / Believe me, / Sincerely yours, C. L. Dodgson. / As a general rule, I think 3 a very bad number for a Dinner-party. But was there ever a rule without an exception?". - In 1875 Dodgson took several known photographs of Rose Lawrie, one of which showed Lawrie draped in a white cloth, titled "The Birthday Wreath" (published in an album of the same name), after the poem "The Birthday" by Dodgson's pen friend Christina Rossetti, the sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. - With traces of old mounting to the verso. Slight brownstaining due to glue residue. Includes a small collector's note.

8vo. Together 2 pp. on bifolia. Both to the conductor Walther Straram concerning his engagement as choirmaster and conductor at the Opéra-Comique. In the letter from 13 June 1908, Carré lays out the conditions of the ten-month engagement starting September. The second letter from 29 May 1909 was to remind Straram of the expiration of the contract at the end of the season. The earlier letter is written in Carré's own hand. - Carré had been a successful actor before becoming the director of the theâtre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1885. In 1898 he was appointed director of the Opéra-Comique, a position he would hold until 1914 and again from 1919 to 1925. - After conducting at the Paris Opéra and the Opéra-Comique, Walther Straram (1876-1933) founded his own Orchestre des Concerts Straram in 1925. The ensemble that emphasized contemporary music was considered to be among the best French orchestras at the time. Straram premiered Honegger's Prélude à la tempête, Ravel's Boléro, and Messiaen's Les Offrandes oubliées. In 1929 Stranvinsky conducted the orchestra for the first recording of Le Sacre du printemps. - Both on stationery with lithographed letterhead of the director of the Opéra-Comique. Traces of folds.

French composer. Rare ALS in French 2pp 8¼" X 10½" n.p. n.y. September 4. Near fine. Long chatty letter with much musical content. In part: "I finished a new collection of songs. It is made up of Two Sonnets of Mallarme that I will show you when I get back if you so desire. Obviously I will be very happy if someone plays my cantata for chorus because it is an important work and I would love very much to hear it." Having died at age twenty-six Cartan's autograph is quite scarce and good music content letters rare. Comes with a TLS in French from what may have been Cartan's agent dated 21 April 1932 just after Cartan's death presenting this Cartan letter to music critic Irving Schwerke 1893-1975. unknown

Wohl an den Mediziner Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot (1807-84): "Euer Hochwohlgeboren sage ich den innigsten Dank für die gütige Mittheilung anamnetischer Notizen und praktischer Winke in Betreff des Krankheitszustandes der vortrefflichen Baronin Strachwitz. Ob die Affection der Centralorgane des Nervensystems und namentlich des Rückenmarks eine primäre ist, blieb mir trotz sorgfältiger Untersuchung dunkel [...]". - Cartellieri war Brunnenarzt in Franzensbad, "um dessen Hebung er sich hochverdient gemacht hat [...]" (Hirsch I, 673). Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

To his brother, the inventor Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823), about spending his leisure time hawking and fishing, as well as their brother John Cartwright's (1740-1824) failed attempt at a parliamentary reform: "Although my excursion into Norfolk did not answer my expectations, I hope to have some good Hawking in September, as I have engaged the falconer to be here, with three goshawks for the whole of that month, and in the mean time shall amuse my day with the drouts for this is an excellent situation for them [...] What, the plage, can you have to do, that you cannot find time to fish? Before you go out consult the moon & the weather. It has long been observed, that a good pike has very seldom been caught (except by trimmers that were out all night) during light nights, therefore the time is from the moon's entering into her first quarter until she enters the last, and the proper weahter is a brisk wind & dark sky [...] I am glad to hear of John's intention to quit London, & hope he will have all his very erronious politics behind him, for the benefit of his successor. I was very happy to observe that his reform of Parliament was kicked out of both houses by large majorities, and the consequences of his inflaming the publick mind has, I hope, damned it compleatly. The Catholic question meeting with a similar fate pleased me well, and those two were able that I cared a straw about [...] There has been pretty work in this neighbourhood lately, & also in Yorkshire all occasioned by working up the people to petition for a reform in Parliament. Hérold chez lui. À la ville on m'a dit que le Concil Municipal était en congé et qu'il ne repondrait les travaux qu'au commencement de la semaine prochaine [...]". - Über einen Bericht in der von Détroyat geleiteten Zeitung L'Estafette, in dem die Schließung der Opéra Comique für die Dauer der Fastenzeit angekündigt wurde: "L'estafette me fait une bonne farce en annonçant que l'opéra comique fermait celui pour toute la durée du carême [...]". - Über den Eintritt seines Sohnes ins Dragonerregiment, weshalb er am folgenden Tag bei der Militärakademie sein müsse: "Je suis obligé de me trouver demain matin à l'école militaire pour faire entrer mon fils au [...] Dragon [...]". - Die übrigen Briefe mit Antworten auf Einladungen und Vereinbarungen zu Treffen, sowie Entschuldigungen für verspätete Antworten. 4 auf Briefpapier mit gedr.
