Gum bichromate print (vintage), 223 x 164 mm. Monogrammed and dated by the artist in red ink at lower right. Matted, framed and glazed. Portrait of the 45-year-old Mahler during the heyday of his directorship at the Vienna Court Opera, three years after his wedding to Alma Schindler. One of the extremely rare works by the sugar industrialist and collector Friedrich Spitzer, who since 1895 had devoted himself to a close study of experimental photographic processes, especially gum bichromate printing - a multi-layered method that accommodated the needs of fin-de-siècle artistic photography in that it allowed for a high degree of creative freedom during every step of the process, making every resulting print a unique work of art. - Spitzer, who cultivated an image as a dandy, was a member of Vienna's modernist art scene around the turn of the century. He was accepted into the renowned London photographic society "Linked Ring" as early as 1892 and joined Vienna's "Camera Club" in 1897. For his small but expressive and technically brilliant body of work he is remembered as one of the principal Austrian artistic photographers of his age. - The present portrait of Mahler was shown at Spitzer's only exhibition, at Vienna's Miethke Gallery in 1907. The artist's autograph signature with the date "05" is usually cropped from the published reproductions. - Perfectly preserved; framed under museum glass. Folio. 50 pp. Dated 16 Oct. 1844 to 21 April 1845. Bound in loose covers with a handwritten title "Log of the proceedings of HMS 'Agincourt' - H. W. Bruce Esqr., Captain. Bearing the Flag of Rear Adml. Sir Th. Cochrane RN, From the 16th October 1844 to the 8th March 1845 [sic], Rept. by - Elphinstone D. D. Aplin, Mate". The log contains detailed daily entries tracking the ship's travels to Asia, including Chusan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Each day's entry provides the ship's bearings, speed, wind direction, and distance travelled, and contains remarks on the ship's maneuvers, signals, and activities. In addition to the necessary constant maintenance plus sail and course correction, ship activities included cutlass drill and mustering of the crew for general review, church services, and leisure time ashore for recreation and amusement. Occasional punishments are listed, with entries on 13 March 1845, "Punished Ed Bhilsly with 48 lashes for insolence", and 20 March, "Punished Jno. Elliott with 36 lashes for Insubordination". - Expected wear to the covers (including tears, toning, and small areas of paper loss); interior pages are in fine condition. The journalist, Elphinstone D'Oyley D'Auvergne D. Aplin, joined the Royal Navy in 1838 and was appointed as acting lieutenant on the HMS Agincourt on 2 April 1845, while making the last entries in this log. He rose to command the HMS Hecla in the mid-to-late 1850s, and in 1861 commanded the HMS Centaur in China during the Taiping Rebellion.

Ca. 30 typewritten documents. - Includes 5 monochrome photographs (dated "Peking Octobre 1965"), 1 sized 140 x 88 mm, 4 between 203 x 128 mm and 257 x 191 mm (newspaper clipping added, 30 Sept. 1965, publishing one of the photos). This collection focuses on King Norodom Sihanouk's politics, constituted in the circles of power through Charles Meyer, his advisor for communication and public relations. Especially Sihanouk's relations to global political agents become clear during this troubled period, which shows China and Vietnam in the first row with America und France. - I. Cambodia's neighbourly relations with China during the Cultural Revolution. Documents (meetings, negotiations, audiences, protocols, delegation lists, drafts, trade agreements and speeches), some with annotations, mostly concerning diplomatic progress between Prince Sihanouk and President Liu Shaqu with his first minister Zhou Enlai in the years of 1963-65 in Beijing. One document deals with the project of the Khmer-Chinese friendship resolution. Also interesting is an analytical summary of the dialogues held on board a boat transporting the Cambodian delegation on the Yangtze. - Sihanouk's declaration to the Chinese people, with deletions and annotations: "Pour nous, cambodgiens, la Chine est bien notre amie numéro un [...]" ("For us, Cambodians, China is assuredly our best friend [...]"). - II. The privileged, close relationship between Meyer and Sihanouk. These documents illustrate their direct collaboration, as well as Meyer's career, in distinctions and newspaper articles. Included are 13 autograph letters signed by Sihanouk, including a charming note relating to the politics of de Gaulles: "M. Mesmer vient de m’annoncer des cadeaux très très substantiels de la France à notre Education Nationale […] et à notre D[éfense] N[ationale] (chars, avions, GMC, etc…) en quantité extrêmement 'satisfaisante' [...]" ("M. Messmer has informed me this minute of the very substantial gifts of France to our National Education and our National Defence (tanks, aircraft, GMC, etc. ...) of an extremely 'satisfying' quantity [...]"). - III. Foreign affairs and minutes. Documents (interventions, summaries, news paper articles, reports, press releases, telegrams) often annotated, e. g. "Lettre ouverte aux milieux impérialistes" ("Open letter to the imperialist world") annotated and initialled: "Vous avez rencontré des échecs humiliants et la faiblesse de votre politique dans les pays d’Asie, qui sont vos satellites est un fait universellement reconnu [...]" ("You have experienced the humiliating failure and weakness of your politics in the Asian countries, which are your vasalls, this is a world-wide acknowledged fact [...]"). - Meyer lived in Indochina for 25 years, 15 of which were spent in Cambodia in the years 1946-1970. Meyer wrote the books "Derrière le sourire khmer" (Behind the Khmer Smile. Plon, 1971) and "Les Français en Indochine: 1860-1910" (The French in Indochina: 1860-1910. An die Redaktion der "Neuen musikalischen Presse in Wien": "Nachdem der gedruckte Jahresbericht des Vereines erst in 4-6 Wochen erscheinen dürfte, so erlaube ich mir die wichtigsten Daten über die Thätigkeit des Vereines im abgelaufenen Jahre hiemit auszugsweise mitzutheilen. Der Verein veranstaltete vier Mitgliederconcerte, deren Programme größtentheils hier noch nicht gehörte Compositionen enthielten. Besonders bemerkenswert waren die Symphonie in Bdur von R. Schumann sowie die Leonoren Ouverture No. 2 von Beethoven. 2 SS. Folio Nach dem Tod von Kurfürst Maximilian III. Joseph (1727-77) erhob Maria Theresia mit dem vorliegenden Dekret Anspruch auf Kurbayern und die Kurpfalz und löste dadurch den Bayerischen Erbfolgekrieg mit Preußen (1778/79) aus: "Demnach es dem unerforschlichen Willen Gottes gefahlen hat, den Durchlauchtigsten Fürsten, und Herrn Maximilian Joseph in Ober- und Niedern Bayern, auch der Oberen Pfalz etc etc. Unseren Villgeliebten Herrn Vötter aus diesen vergänglichen leben abgefordert, und also durch diesen betriebten Todfahl der Curbaieri[sche] Wilhelminische Manns Stammen erloschen ist, so erklären wir hiermit, und geben zu wissen, daß vermög den von Kaiser Sigismundo von 1426 dem Herzog Alberth von Oesterreich ertheilten wirklichen Belehnung alle die jenige Lande, Districta in Nieder, und ober Baiern, auch der oberen Pfalz, welche die damalige mit dem Herzog Johann von Baiern erloschene Straubing[isch]e Linie besessen hat, Unsern Erzhause wirklich angefahlen seye [...]". - Die preußische Kriegserklärung erfolgte am 4. Juli 1778, allerdings konnte der Krieg ohne nennenswerte militärische Auseinandersetzungen bereits am 13. Mai 1779 durch den Frieden von Teschen beendet werden. Im Friedensvertrag verzichtete Österreich gegenüber Preußen und den Wittelsbachern auf den Großteil seiner Gebietsansprüche und erhielt im Gegenzug das sogenannte Innviertel. - Ohne die im Original vorhandene Titulatur. Folio. 19 ff. of thick dark cardboard. With 7 pen-and-ink drawings and 7 photographs. Contemporary brown calf with brass corner fittings. All edges gilt. The splendid album celebrating the 25th anniversary of the women's shelter and retirement home, which was established in 1883 and rebuilt in 1906/07 after plans by Karl Holzer. It begins with a portrait photograph of Archduchess Marie Valerie, who functioned as the institution's patron in 1903. The portrait is followed by a history of the building on ff. 2-5. Seven pen-and-ink drawings on ff. 6-12 show an exterior view, the hall, parlour with hall, dining hall, bedroom, kitchen and garden front, while ff. 13-19 show seven photographs of the main front, dining hall, parlour, hall with staircase, kitchen, chancery and the old building existing until 1906/07. - The album describes the history of the women's home, tracing its existence back to 1881, when several Viennese women joined to found an association aiming at providing single elderly, poor but educated women with affordable flats and meals in a Viennese home for women. - Located near Schönbrunn, the shelter in the Frauenheimgasse today is operated by the Catholic relief and social service organisation Caritas. - Lacks the clasp. Binding slightly rubbed and a little cracked near the upper joint. Flyleaves somewhat waterstained, cardboard leaves rubbed at the edges.

The postcard shows a photograph of Paul and Laura [Marx] Lafargue: "Mes plus sincères remerciements à la citoyenne Laura Marx Lafargue pour son aimable et précieuse signature à mon adresse. Son respectueux et dévoué […]". - Jenny Laura Marx (1845-1911), the second daughter of Karl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen, married the political writer and activist Paul Lafargue in 1868. She translated the Coummunist Manifesto to French. Paul Lafargue and Laura Marx Lafargue committed suicide together in 1911. - The socialist and political activist Raymond Lavigne (1851-1930) from Bordeaux was famous for building clandestine unions prior to the law in 1884 which authorized this for the first time. He was one of the leaders of the "Fédération nationale des syndicats" and secretary to the French Worker's Party.

Rundschreiben an die getreuen Untertanen betr. der vom Landtag des Jahres 1864 festgelegten Bestimmungen über das "Newe Zapffenmaß". - Helmhart Jörger Freiherr von Tollet war Hofkammerpräsident Maximilians II. und später Rudolfs II. und ein Förderer des Protestantismus in Österreich. Sein gleichnamiger Neffe (1572-1631), ein Sohn von Helmhart Jörgers Bruder Wolfgang von der Christophorischen Linie, wurde gar zum führenden Vertreter des evangelischen Adels in Österreich - was "sich mit seiner Stellung als niederösterreichischer Regimentsrath nicht gut vertrug, da er so gut wie Tschernembl, Rich. Starhemberg u. A. zu den eifrigsten feudalen Autonomisten zählte" (ADB XIV, 529). - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und mit kleineren Randläsuren, im ganzen sehr gut erhalten.

Zusammen 2½ (1+1½) SS. Folio. Interessante Zeugnisse des weitgehend vergessenen Gewerbezweigs der Haarpudermacher. Die Wiener Stärkemacher und -händler hatten 1664 eine Bruderschaft errichtet; 1698 folgte die Gründung der Bruderschaft der Haarpudermacher. Im Jahr 1728 vereinigten sich die Berufsgruppen nach langwierigen Auseinandersetzungen zu einem Gewerbe mit einer gemeinsamen Bruderschaft. - Bei dem älteren der beiden Dokumente handelt es sich um die Gewährung eines Gewerbeschutzes an den Pudermacher Johann Georg Mayeringer durch den Wiener Stadtrat: "Von Bürgermeister und Rath der Stadt Wien wegen: Dem Johann Georg Mayeringer hiemit anzufügen, Es habe eine hochlöbl. N.Ö. Regierung auf sein gehorsamstes Bitten, um gnädige Verfügung an einem Stadtrathe, womit er bey der durch allerhöchste Resolution ihme zuerkannten Wodnianzischen Stärkemachergewerb geschützet werden möchte, durch hohen Bescheid von 28ten Sept. und p.to 10ten dieß herabgelangen laßen: daß über den Commisionaliter vorgekommenen Umstandt (daß der supplicant und die Wurzerische Conleute, wegen des von letzteren, in Folge der untern 24ten July, und p.to 5ten August dieß Jahres ergangen allerhöchsten Entschlüßung an ersteren zu überlaßen kommenden Stärkmacherhandels bereits einig wären) von einem Stadtrathe die nöthige Einleitung getrofen werden solle: womit in Folge erstgesagt allerhöchster Resolution ohne all-weiteren Umtrieb, und Verzug das nöthige fürgekehret werde [...]". Papierdurchbruch im Falz und quadratischem Ausschnitt (kein Textverlust). - Das jüngere Dokument ist der Verkaufsvertrag des Mayeringerschen Betriebs an Theresia Wuttke und Gatten: "Nachdem ich endesgefertigter das bürg. Stärk- und Haarbudermachergewerbe der Frau Theresia Wutkin für sich und ihren Ehegatten um eine Kaufzubilligungssumme von baaren 6500 fl. sage Sechs Tausend Fünf Hundert Gulden gegen dem Käuflich überlassen habe, zu welchen Ende mir bereits eine Vorangabe von Ein Hundert Fünzig Gulden eingehändigt wurden, so erkläre ich hiemit, dass ich also gleich baare Fünf Tausend bis Fünf Tausend Fünf Hundert Gulden, den Uebermaß ober der Kaufschillingssumme binnen zwölf oder höchstens achtzehn Monathen vom Tage des Contractes (worüber bei Schließung des Contractes die genaue Bestimmung folgen wird) erhalten solle. [Mayseder, Joseph, Violinvirtuose und Komponist (1789-1863)].
Musikmanuskript mit Mayseders "Rondino Concertante, Op. 36" und einer musikalischen Schilderung des Einzugs von Kaiser Franz I. in Paris. [Wohl Wien, um 1824].
27 SS. Halblederband der Zeit über Marmordeckeln. Qu.-Folio (390 x 230 mm). Der erste Teil des Manuskripts ist ein kurioses unpubliziertes Stück Programmusik, das den Einzug von Kaiser Franz I. in Paris am 14. April 1814 schildert. Eine nicht völlig passende kolorierte Radierung des Wiener Graphikverlegers Johann Schönberg, die auf den inneren Vorderdeckel geklebt wurde, zeigt den "Einzug der allirten [!] Truppen in Paris, am 31. März 1814, unter dem allgemeinen Jubel des Volkes; Kaiser Alexander, und Friedrich Wilhelm an ihrer Spitze!". Das eröffnende "Andante maestoso" des anonymen und unbetitelten Klavierstücks beschreibt den Tag vor dem Einzug: "Freudiges Gefühl und gespannte Erwartung der Pariser den Erretter Europas in ihren Mauern zu haben". Dem folgen ein Adagio "Der schöne erwünschte Morgen beginnt" und mehrere Allegros, die den Einzug der Truppen und die Ansammlung der Bevölkerung schildern. In einem weiteren Allegro verlassen die in der Radierung dargestellten verbündeten Monarchen Paris, "um ihren erhabenen und mächtigen Bundesgenossen einzuholen und seinen Einzug zu verherrlichen". Endlich kann der "Einzug des Kaisers in Paris" mit einem Allegro Maestoso gefeiert werden: "Umgeben von Seinen hohen Allirten und von einem auserordentlichen ja fast unzählbaren Gefolge von Marschällen, Feldherrn und Generälen von allen Nationen zieht Kaiser Franz nicht als Eroberer sondern als Freund als Befreyer in die Stadt". Auf musikalische Motive, die weitere Details des Einzugs erlebbar machen sollen, folgt die enthusiastische Reaktion der Bevölkerung in einem Allegro: "Die Einwohner der Hauptstadt überlassen sich ganz dem schönen Ausdruck ihrer Rührung" und lassen den Kaiser hochleben: "Von allen Seiten ertönt durch die ganze Dauer des Zuges von Hundert-Tausenden der Ruf: Es lebe der deutsche Kaiser, Es lebe der Retter und Vater der Völker". Zwei Märsche, darunter der "Marsch der k. k. Österreichischen Truppen" und ein Finale mit allgemeinem Dank für die "Befreyung" schließen das Stück ab. - Der zweite Teil des Manuskripts ist die Klavierstimme von Joseph Mayseders "Rondino Concertante, Op. 36" für Violine und Klavier. - Die Programmusik für Franz I. stammt zweifellos aus dem Kreis der kaiserlichen Hofmusiker, dem auch Joseph Mayseder angehörte. Bereits 1810 wurde er Konzertmeister des Hofopernorchesters. Ab 1816 wirkte er als Violinsolist an der Wiener Hofmusikkapelle und 1836 wurde er schließlich deren Leiter. Als Geigenvirtuose, Quartettmusiker und Komponist von Kammermusik war Mayseder weit über die Grenzen des Kaiserreichs geachtet. - Das aufwändige Manuskript stammt aus einer Hand. - Etwas angestaubt und gebräunt, teils auch fingerfleckig. Einband berieben und lädiert; die Bindung lose mit Spuren alter Blockheftung.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph handwritten letter by Mehmet Emin Onat. (30x21 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 p. Full. Letterhead of 'Teknik Üniversite Istanbul; Ev: Kadiköy'. It starts as 'Sevgili Lemancigim'. Emin Onat was a Turkish architect and former rector of Istanbul Technical University. Onat was born in Istanbul in 1908. He entered Istanbul Technical University in 1926. Then, he was sent to Zurich Technical University. Onat was one of the architects of Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His architectural style was formed at ETH. Emin Onat learned to experiment, interpret and search for modernism from his teacher Otto R. Salvisberg, a well-known, experienced practicing architect. Despite getting under the Anitkabir's shadow, he has a unique architectural style. Onat's architectural talent blossomed at Zurich Technical University, where one of his fellow students was Otto Rudolf Salvisberg, who later went to become one of the best architects of his time. Onat completed his studies in Zurich and returned to Turkey in 1934. Within a year, he had become an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture at the School of Engineering. He held the post for a couple of years that were marked by strenuous relations with the other members of the faculty, owing to the novel methods of teaching Onat introduced. In 1944 Onat became the first dean of the newly established Faculty of Architecture at the Istanbul Technical University. Onat rose further into the echelons of the architectural world in 1946, when he was given an honorary membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 1951 he became the Rector of the Istanbul Technical University, a post he held for two years. The Hannover Technical University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1956. In 1957 he returned to the university. His return lasted only three years as on 21 October 1960 he and 147 faculty members were ousted from the university. Onat designed several impressive buildings during his career. These include the Istanbul Theatre and Conservatory, Istanbul Palace of Justice (1949), Kavaklidere Cenap, Presidential Secretariat in Cankaya and the General Directorate of Security. Onat had a predilection for local architectural elements. He fused traditional designs into his own designs, striving to attain organic unity. Onat's other designs are the Istanbul Lounges, Uludag Sanatorium, Bursa Governor's Mansion and IBM Headquarters in Istanbul. (Source: Wikipedia). Rare.

[Men's Choral Society].
Archive of the Hernalser Men's Choral Society. Mainly Vienna, 1845 to ca. 1925.
Collection of 471 songs in 211 fascicles, of which 42 are in manuscript, 169 mimeographed, engraved, or printed musical pieces. From the "Hernalser Men's Choral Society of Vienna". Various formats, mainly folios. The wide repertory of a popular Viennese choral society which flourished during the last third of the 19th century. Amongst the numerous songs are compositions by Strauss, Schrammel, Ziehrer and Schubert. Most contain the complete arrangement, with the paper colour indicating the voice range (1st Tenor, 2nd Tenor, 1st Bass, etc.). The residue of many earlier choral societies' works can be found in this archive, which was continually built over the lifetime of the Hernalser Men's Choral Society.

[i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count A[braham Salomon] Camondo, (1781-1873)]. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera, Constantinople. 26,5x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co., London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe, and 40 to 41, Old Broad Street, London, E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo, (1860-1935), was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child, Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, to Paris around 1869, where he grew up and continued the career of his father, Nissim de Camondo (1830-1889), as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire, established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911, he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent, he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions, even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell, with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great, a set of Buffon porcelain (with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings) from the Sèvres manufacturer, and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers, daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers, in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master, Count Charles Sampieri, whom she would later marry and divorce. The children, Nissim and Beatrice, remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914, but his son did not reside there very long, as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son, whom he adored, would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917, de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935, and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum (Musée Nissim de Camondo) in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection, the meticulously-restored service areas, elevator, and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II, his daughter Béatrice, his son-of-law Léon Reinach, and their children (Fanny and Bertrand) were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result, the de Camondo family died out.
