A wonderful archive of historically significant with detailed civil war content: 1 Two detailed Civil War diaries; 2 Ransom's first war letter home; 3 superb signed Ransom Civil War cartes des vistecdv; 4 Other photos: a tintype cdv gem photo and another hand colored cdv of his wife Louie Lucy Perham; 5 A book titled "Sacred Poems"; 6 Ransom's business card and property tag and lastly but of huge importance to genealogists; 7 Early name and address book of Dick Ransom mentioning many family members and Battery mates. Dick Ransom was from Chicago Illinois; enlisted on 8/7/1862 as a private. On 8/29/1862 he mustered into Chicago Mercantile Light Artillery. He was discharged for disability on 3/24/1863. Specifics: Diary #1 1861 2.5 x 3.5 inches full year January 1st through December 31st 1861 120 pages of which approx. 250 days with entries recorded dark brown period ink very legible. Great war content and a number of remarks made in great excitement; Lincoln as President; death of Col. Ellsworth and Steven Douglas. Battle excitement and the rout of the federal army at the first battle of Bull Run at Manassas. Diary #2 1862 : 3 x 5 inches entries from Aug. 7th 1862 through Mar. 6th 1863. 29 pages brown period ink very legible. Cover reads " Dick Ransom mercantile Battery Chicago Artillary 100 Washington Street Chicago". Signed in ink in Dick Ransom's hand on first page; "Dick Ransom 100 Washington Street Chicago Ill." Also included: 3 wonderful cdv/tintype of Lucy Ransom. Dick speaks of his proposal for marriage to Lucy in his 1861 diary. First is a tintype/cdv format of Lucy backmark Chicago dated Aug 19th 1866 and signed on reverse in Dick's handin brown ink "Louie Perham 1866 Dick Ransom". Secondly mounted Gem Albuman photo of Lucy on cdv mount ca. 1865. Cdv is handcolored image of Lucy dated Jan 23rd 1868. The address book includes all of Dick's friends and family and many of Mercantile Battery mates including Sinclair Willard Gunlock and Medal of Honor winner James Dunne. 3 x 5 inches many pages of entries mouse chew on cover edges. The date of 1883 can be found on the fep. Brown ink inscriptions this book is an important genealogy record and helps to identify all the people referred to in the diaries. Here are some snippets: " January 9th "my Birthday 19 years old born at South Woodstock Vermont""march 4th Abe Lincoln President of the United States"" Mar 19th " wrote a long letter to Lucy . with a proposal for marrige which I am sure will be accepted.I am in great anxiety for an answer". tintype of Lucy included "rec'd an answer alright = O.K."" April 25th -Intense excitement about . voluteers companies forming and drilling constantly all over the North"." May 2nd - douglas was received here by republicans and Democrates unanimously " May 3 - great war excitement for some time - volunteerism all over the country - great excitement". " May 5th - volunteers drilling in the streets "" May 8th - Lucy went for me to get a flag for the volunteers ."" May 9th - great war excitement companies guarding and driling". " May 24th - war message regarding the good and efficient commanders." " may 25th - Scott and President Lincoln col. Ellsworth the Zouave huro of Chicago killed in Alexandrea yesterday for tearing down a secsession flag. " June 3rd - Stephen A Douglas died at the tremont house this A.m. at 48. The city draped very very heavily mourning. col. Ellesworth funeral yeaterday at Bryan hall". " May 4th - Douglas laid in state at Bryan Hall all day." " May 5th - Douglas still in Bryan Hall ". " May 5th - Douglas still lies in state at Bryan hall is to be burried at Cottage Grove tomorrow ". "May 7th- Douglas funeral stores all shut up largest funeral ever in Chicago ". " June 10th - War excitement continues usual small battles and skirmishes but no large ones some expected soon". " June 20th - war and rumors of war some great battles expected soon in vicinity of Washington Sucession." " June 25th - Great riot in Milwakee yesterday - Dutch Mob attacks." " June 25 - all state banks in iowa Indiana and Eastern Missiouri counterfeits so plenty now". " June 30th - went out to Cottage Grove to see the camp" " July 8 - Telegraphs forbidden by the War department to transmit any war news of the intentions of the united states "." July 16 - the federal forces are beginning to move toward Richmond knowing where they will stop Gen. Scott don't tell everydody". " July 22 - At noon good news from the war high hopes night news the entire rout of the Federal army . and retreat back to Washington". referring to the first battle of Bull Run at Manassas " July 23 - News from war not encouraging - 600 killed ". " July 25- breacking accounts the battle and rout of the Union army though better than at first suspected ". " Sept. 25- think of joining T.E.G. Ransoms 11th regiment at Cairo had a letter from him wants me". referring to Gen. Ransom. " Oct 6th - another letter from T.E. G. Ransom still urges me. Important archive of post Civil War GAR letters of the Chicago Mercantile Battery Light Infantry Chicago Illinois including two Medals of Honor winner's autographs Kretsinger and Stevens. This archive comes from the Dick Ransom estate from his former Civil War comrades specific to the GAR activities for the "Battery Boys." 1 Letter written on behalf of battery mate Dick Ransom by Gardner Willard and signed by 8 additional Chicago Mercantile Battery boys. Two of these signatures belong to Medal of Honor winners William Stevens and George Kretsinger. Other signatures include David Crego Orin Nash W. Brown Richard Powel Florus D. Meachem. Dated 1891. 2. Hand written letter in support of Dick Ransom and signed by battery mate J. H. Swan. 1891. 3. Der Verfasser wurde in Inhaltsverzeichnis und Portraitbetitelung der Anthologie fälschlich als Admiral "Diek" ausgewiesen. - Karl Dick beeinflusste als Teil der sog. 8vo. 2½ pp. on bifolium. To Mr. Breach, the proprietor of the Folkestone Inn, where Dickens stayed for three days while travelling to Boulogne-sur-Mer on Sunday, June 12th. Dickens mis-dated this letter as, according to another letter in the VanderPoel Dickens collection (A85) written from Folkestone dated Saturday the 11th, this letter, written on Thursday, would have been the 9th of June. In his letter Dickens asks the proprietor to have a "quiet and cheerful" room prepared for him and his family who plan on coming for the summer. Dickens was particularly fond of Boulogne as, the previous summer, he had completed two chapters of "Bleak House" while vacationing there. - Minor overall toning; brown spot to upper middle crease. - Provenance: from a Chicago-area private collection. 8vo. 2¾ pp. on bifolium. To Dr. Frederick Salmon complaining of some aches and pains. Dickens and his wife went to stay at the White Hart Hotel in Windsor on November 6th, the day after Dickens completed his novel "Barnaby Rudge". The trip was meant to provide some rest and relaxation for Dickens who had completed "The Old Curiosity Shop" and "Barnaby Rudge" back to back, and had recently undergone major surgery. Dr. Frederick Salmon had performed surgery on Dickens in October of 1841 for a fistula of the rectum, a procedure for which Salmon was renowned. In this letter, Dickens' describes his pain and references the operation with his typical wit, noting "all manner of queer pains were floating about my illustrious person [...] now (but not often) shooting through that region which you have made as tender as my heart [...]". Dickens tells his doctor that he is feeling "immeasurably better" and asks whether Salmon would like to make his follow up visit tomorrow rather than Tuesday. - Light soiling to creases; evidence of removal of wax seal. Hitchcock and regrets to inform her that his Vita for the Royal Hospital for Incurables has been long engaged". - Dickens had been one of the first high-profile figures to show his support for the Royal Hospital for Incurables (now the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability) by helping to raise funds for its creation in 1854. In 1863 the hospital relocated to its permanent home, Melrose Hall on West Hill, in Putney.

It went admirably - rose as it went on - mounted immensely in the third act - and closed in triumph. Howe was not good, but the rest were. Wallack beyond all praise. I have never seen such a fine, picturesque, splendid piece of melodrama. He really bore the whole play on his shoulders, and did gallant service. I believe he dines here next Sunday at ½ past 5. If so, will you come? No party. I begin to think you live in Australia [...]". - Mounted on backing paper.

Single 6-cent "Daniel Webster / The / Dartmouth / College Case / 1819" stamp at upper right. At lower left in his stylized calligraphic script Dickey signs large and bold in black fountain pen. Seine Werke sind im Wesentlichen phantastische Erzählungen, in denen es häufig um Monomanien und Triebverwirrungen geht. Zeitlebens behauptete er, bürgerlich Heino von Dickinson-Wildberg zu heißen, und ließ diesen Namen in Nachschlagewerken wie Kürschers Deutschen Literatur-Kalender eintragen.

Reliure en demi maroquin bordeaux à coins, dos à quatre nerfs, lieu et date dorés en queue, encadrement de filets noirs sur les plats de papier à effet moiré, gardes et contreplats du même papier, couvertures et dos conservés, tête dorée, élégante reliure de l'époque signée Blanchetière. Notre exemplaire comporte aussi une suite en noir des illustrations non annoncée à la justification du tirage. Bel exemplaire agréablement établi. Notre exemplaire est enrichi d'un billet autographe daté et signé de 24 lignes de Sylvain Sauvage adressé à Raymond Hesse (bien qu'il ne soit pas nommément cité) ne tarissant pas d'éloge sur "Riquet à la houppe" : "... Riquet a charmé Anatole France. Vous savez toujours hausser vos porte paroles jusqu'au plan du conte philosophique, et en même temps, vous les maintenez très naturels...", il le remercie également pour l'envoi de son "Poilu pacifiste" : "... que je mets votre Poilu près du Riquet dans un coin choisi de ma bibliothèque..." To a friend, criticizing a philosophical work similar to those of Nicolas Malebranche and René Descartes, but lacking in style and even in correct French, wherein the author claims fire to be the main principle of everything, and the atmosphere to be nothing more than a mass of aqueous molecules which charge, moisten, and minimize the power of fire, without giving the proper scientific facts confirming his theory, concluding with the observation that the age of experimental philosophy has come to supersede that of visions: "Cet ouvrage n'est pas sans idées. C'est une réverie de la tournure de celles de Malebranche et de Descartes, mais point de stile, quelquefoi même pas de Français. Si ce qu'il y a là dedans de systematique etait tombé dans la tête de Bufon, à force d'expressions, De Subtilités et de couleur, je ne sais ce qu'il n'en aurait pas fait. Dans l'état où cela est, point de sensation d'espérer. Selon l'auteur, Le feu est le principe de tout, excepté de son ouvrage. He excelled at depicting morning and sunset effects, his favourite motifs including fields of heather in the fog, forests filled with light, plateaus in the Creuse Valley, and the Dordogne River winding through the hills. - Traces of postmarks; lower right corner slightly creased. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

120 p., in-8 ou in-4 comprenant 18 cartes postales et 2 télégrammes. Divers lieux, 1938 - 1944, certaines enveloppes conservées. Très importante correspondance de Luc Dietrich avec Philippe Lavastine, s'étendant de la rencontre des deux hommes en octobre 1938 jusqu'à la mort de Dietrich en 1944. Quelques lettres sont enluminées de collages d'éléments végétaux et de dessins originaux à l'encre ou aux crayons de couleur de Luc Dietrich. Seulement huit de ces lettres ont été publiées dans la monographie Luc Dietrich parue en 1998 aux Éditions du Temps Qu'il Fait, sous la direction de Fréderic Richaud, toutes les autres sont inédites. Nous nous bornerons à donner quelques extraits…… Philippe-Ie-silencieux, allons troubadour a la manque, envoie-moi quelques mots d'écrits par parchemin-postal (intermédiaire de pieds de facteur). Je ne sais pas ce que je vais devenir. Je ne sais pas si ce qui va sortir de moi. Un réservoir d'huile ? Une brosse? Un lion? Un pou ? Une ARAIGNEE ? Un homme ???? (…) Mystère ? Troublant et épais mystère. De ne pas te voir ça a en quelque sorte faussé ma jactance, désaxé ma rhétorique. Je voudrais que tu m'écrives "…Je te cite. Ta lettre du 4 mars : " Et tu me parles d'identification. Ça c'est un comble. Mais tu n'as jamais compris rien à rien, mon pauvre ami. Dans l'identification, tu y es jusqu'au cou, on ne te voit plus, t'es bouffé jusqu'aux tripes, vide, nettoyé. Où qu'il est, mon ami ? Je ne Ie vois plus ? Y'en a plus ? II a encore une fois foutu le camp. II m'écrit tout le temps, mais dans ses lettres il n'est jamais là. II se promène. II bat la campagne. " T'as raison. T'étais devenu comme un compromis entre une brioche, un rossignol, un cygne, un crocodile. Voilà que je commence à faire Ie zouave. Philippe tu as raison. Je sentais que je ne te donnais plus de vraies lettres, pas les lettres que tu méritais et que je méritais d'écrire. Mais encore une fois Agathe était Ie prétexte, le coup qui ébranle plus loin l'édifice déjà lézardé. Je vais écrire sur les deux souffrances. Tu me répondras. SOUFFRANCE VOLONTAlRE : ne serait-ce pas l'acceptation de la grande, de la vraie douleur physique (dont j'ai horreur et que je ne recherche pas) ? Par exemple, une douleur fulgurante dans un membre. Aussitôt secours de l'analgésique. Si on décide de souffrir sans Ie recours d'aucune drogue, si on accepte ce supplice qui n'a rien d'une masturbation, si on décide de s'élever autour de ce bouillonnement, de se détendre, de se calmer, est-ce cela, " souffrance volontaire" ? Je reconnais que je ne recherche jamais ce genre de souffrance et que, lorsqu'elle arrive, j'essaie d'en tirer parti. D'ailleurs, quand je suis en proie à ces fortes douleurs corporelles, je suis mieux. Mes amis (je me reporte au passé et à ce que j'ai entendu) me trouvent plus ouvert, plus compréhensif, plus détendu… Je devrais faire très attention maintenant et il faudra que tu m'aides, ou plutôt que vous m'aidiez car je ne veux jamais exclure Boussik de notre amitié. J'ai reçu d'elle une lettre si gentille, si voletante et fraîche que je me suis mis à japper de rire, tout seul, comme Hitler quand il se couche après une bonne grosse blague…… En ce moment il pleut, et toute la campagne fume tant la chaleur est grande, la chaleur au ras du sol lutte avec l'eau qui tombe. Temps à pourrir le foin coupé. Ici je m'installe : les livres sont en ordre (presque) dans la bibliothèque, les parquets sont cirés. La porte-fenêtre est percée dans la chambre à coucher et l'escalier construit. L'on peut descendre dans le jardin ou fleurissent : deux lys, des campanules comme des tymballes. (…) Que d'énumérations ô mon pauvre grippe-papier. Mais je pense à toi dans la ville moite et traversée de relents urinaires et industrieux. Je veux que tu sentes que ma campagne existe, qu'elle est touffue et variée, et que je t'attends planté dans les paysages de mon seuil pour saluer ta venue. Quand comptes-tu venir ? Je pense à mon livre avec un débordement de force. J'y pense un peu comme si je l'aimais dans la chair et que je souhaitais sa présence, son plaisir, son grandissement dans l'un et l'autre. Maintenant c'est tout à fait " le sentiment de mon idée" qu'il est placé sur Ie bon chemin. Nous en parlerons. Maintenant je serai mieux à l'aise dans mes actes pour te recevoir. Je suis accablé de maniaqueries, surtout lorsque je suis chez moi, asservi par Ie désordre qui s'y trouve. Je me sentirai mieux dans une maison distribuée, parée et ordonnée selon mes gouts secrets, arrêtés… Sais-tu que j'ai terminé mon livre L'Apprentissage de la Ville ? tout à fait dernièrement ? J'ai sué, ressué et vraiment souffert l'agonie pour l'éclairer, Ie réaliser. Il a posé tous les points sur lesquels je veux peser. Il a défriché l'entrée des voies que je veux parcourir. C'est dur d'écrire un livre, tu sais. Surtout je l'ai voulu sincère. Pour la première fois - et pourtant j'étais sincère (enfin autant qu'un homme ordinaire peut l'être). J'ai découvert l'essence de la sincérité. Avec ce livre j'ai appris la vérité des vérités que vous m'avez fait entrevoir. Je te dois beaucoup Philippe. Comme je voudrais que tu Ie lises.… Daumal m'inquiète. Je serais prêt à payer beaucoup pour prolonger sa vie. (…) À bientôt Philippe. Ne m'écris pas car je te sais très occupé.
