Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ihrem Wunsche entspreche ich gern durch Beifügen meiner Unterschrift für Ihre Sammlung […]". - Studying at the Dresden Academy of Arts from 1863, Diez was appointed Professor in 1891 and was a founding member of the Dresden artists' association in 1909, his work comprising fountains and monuments in Dresden, Braunschweig and Meiningen. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Large 4to. 1 p. on bifolium with integral address panel ("A Monseigneur Monseigneur Conte de Lester a Paris"). On watermarked paper. To Sir Robert Sidney (1595-1677), 2nd Earl of Leicester, referring to the hasty return to Paris of the recipient's secretary James Battier, sending (premature) congratulations on a putative Anglo-French treaty, and hoping himself to visit Leicester in Paris in about three weeks' time: "Mr. Battiers dispatch hath bin so uncertaine, as I prepared not for it till I should understand of a certaine time pitched for his departure; and the knowledge of that came not to me untill this very instant that he is going, w[hi]ch maketh it too late for me to trouble y[ou]r ho[nor] w[i]th any longer a letter than to congratulate w[i]th you the happy conclusion of the treaty you have carried and effected w[i]th so much honor. I hope about 3 weeks hence to wayte upon y[ou]r ho[nor] in Paris. In the meane time I humbly kisse y[ou]r handes and rest y[ou]r ho[nors] most humble servant [...]". - In April 1636 Charles I had sent Leicester as Ambassador Extraordinary to Louis XIII of France, seconding the mission of the Ambassador in Ordinary, Viscount Scudamore, whose negotiations with the French had proved unsuccessful. Despite working hard for a projected Anglo-French agreement, other factors (such as intrigues against Cardinal Richelieu and secret talks with the exiled Marie de Medici) doomed the treaty from the start. - Kenelm Digby, the elder son of Sir Everard Digby (1578-1606), executed for his part in the Gunpowder Plot, was a man of many parts, including those of a courtier (he was a friend of Charles I and was known to Cromwell), poet, pirate, alchemist, book collector, and inventor. He travelled extensively, fighting Venetian galleys off Iskenderun and living successively in France and Italy. "In 1657 his increasingly poor health led Digby to take the waters at Montpellier, where he gave his famous account of the 'powder of sympathy', which cured wounds by being rubbed on the weapon that inflicted them. It was a strong solution of vitriol (copper sulfate) in rainwater, which could be improved by drying in the sun and by mixture with gum tragacanth" (DSB IV, 95). - Tears where opened repaired; left margin laid down on modern paper for an album. Folds, slightly browned. - Autograph material by Sir Kenelm Digby is extremely scarce.

This British statesman was an influential member of Parliament espousing both imperialist and radical causes simultaneously; he was a member of William Gladstone's cabinet in his second administration but was ruined politically when he was cited as a correspondent in a divorce suit; his controversial life inspired the play "The Right Honourable Gentleman." ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" London England 1904 February 23. Addressed to publisher William Heinemann 1863-1920. Near fine. Marked "Private" this curious and lengthy letter showing Dilke's perplexity at the review copies of books that his wife had been receiving from Heinemann: "My wife has never reviewed a word in her life so far as she can remember altho' in the early days of the 'Saturday Review' she wrote in it upon most other topics. My wife is not even indirectly interested in English books for she has no time to read them with the exception of those of one or two personal friends and has less knowledge of the modern English book than the the ordinary reader. unknown

He moved to Dachau in 1896, where he co-founded the painters' school "Neu-Dachau" and advanced to become one of the most prominent members of the Dachau artists' colony. - Traces of a postmark. Signed Program 8vo 5½" X 8½" 4pp n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint edgewear original light folds and faint mounting traces on middle third of rear wrapper. Interesting program printed in blue and red on buff stock for Dilling's appearance at the "Community Concert Association" listing an ambitious program that included Bach Mozart Faure Debussy Prokofieff and a half dozen others tiny inked notes beneath three of these. Dilling signs large and bold in pencil near the top. Inner page 2 contains Dilling's biography and "Annotations" pp. 3 and 4 for each composition played. unknown

Beschnitten (ohne Textverlust). - Ab 1865/66 war Dillner als Elevin an der Wiener Hofoper tätig war. Nach ihren ersten Erfolgen 1866-69 als Mitglied des Kölner Opernhauses wurde sie an das Deutsche Landestheater in Prag engagiert, wo sie bis 1872 auf der Bühne stand. 1872 erhielt sie erneut ein Engagement an der Wiener Hofoper, gab daneben zahlreiche Gastspiele u.a. in Berlin und Stuttgart und nahm 1885 Abschied von der Bühne.

Hofburgtheater jedoch nicht geeignet befunden worden [...]”. Bei dem angesprochenen Lustspiel handelt es sich wohl um eine dte. Bearbeitung des gleichnamigen Dramas des polnischen Grafen Aleksander Fredro, die bibliographisch nicht nachzuweisen ist. - Dingelstedt wurde 1867 als Hofoperndirektor und 1870 als Direktor des Wiener Burgtheaters bestellt, “das unter seiner Leitung eine Blütezeit erlebte” (Czeike II, 38). “Er hat der Burg alles gegeben, was der Zeitgeschmack und das Publikum wünschten [...]” (Haeusserman, Das Wiener Burgtheater, 50). 1 S. Ca. 20:100 mm. Dingelstedt wurde 1867 zum Hofoperndirektor und 1870 zum Direktor des Wiener Burgtheaters bestellt, "das unter seiner Leitung eine Blütezeit erlebte" (Czeike II, 38). "Er hat der Burg alles gegeben, was der Zeitgeschmack und das Publikum wünschten [...]" (Haeusserman, Das Wiener Burgtheater, Wien u. a., Molden, 1975, S. 50).
