Small 8vo. 51 unnumbered ff. Original red morocco. Green moirée silk endpapers; all edges gilt. Signed by Grassi on front flyleaf. The personal travel notebook of Joseph Grassi, one of the foremost portraitists of his age and remembered today as the painter of one of the very few authentic Mozart portraits. In her biographical sketch of the artist, Elisabeth Eixner deplores the lack of studies concerning Grassi's Roman years: "It would be a rewarding task for scholarship to investigate Grassi's activities in Rome, which he first visited in 1808-10 (becoming member of the Academy of San Luca in 1810), and again in 1816-21 as 'Director of Studies of Saxon Artists in Italy'" (NDB VII, 5). Clearly, the present notebook constitutes the principal and hitherto entirely undocumented source for such an investigation: apparently begun during his first journey to Italy, the booklet also served Grassi upon his return, containing his travel plans as well as lists of important events, meetings, addresses, and contacts in Rome. The detailed schedule of his itinerary from Gotha to Rome (no less than 60 stations, stating the distances and length of stay) is followed by a five-page catalogue of artists active in Rome, most of which Grassi managed to visit, a brief account of social life in the city, and a list of various works of art and their locations. The names of numerous art dealers and antiquarians as well as several paintings offered to Grassi (including works by van Dyck, Raffael, Michelangelo, and Rubens) give evidence of his activity as an agent for the Ducal collections. Among the extensive notes at the end of the volume (which include payments to his coachman) we also find a three-page autobiography in which Grassi records the principal events of his life with their respective dates. - After his last visit to Rome "Grassi returned to Dresden, where he died in 1838, lonely and after years of illness. For a decade (1781-1791), Mozart and Grassi both lived in Vienna. The close connection between Joseph Grassi, the Mozarts and their in-laws Lange is proved by a letter of 12 March 1783 from Wolfgang to Leopold Mozart in which he discusses a performance of his pantomime 'Pantalon und Colombine' (with his music, KV 446) on March 3rd, an event held in the Hofburg Redoutensaal and attended by his friends" (cf. Angermüller). - Perfectly preserved. Autographs in Grassi's hand are of the utmost rarity: the past decades' auction records list a single specimen (Stargardt, 21 March 1996, lot 672: his signature on a receipt for Duke August of Saxe-Gotha). IV. 1909). - “Es ist üblich, wenn die Stadt einen großen Sohn verliert, eine Gedenkmedaille zu prägen. Ich bin gerne bereit als ein unentwegter Bewunderer des großen Bürgermeisters Dr. Lueger eine Medaille zu schaffen u. diese dem Stadtrate zum Selbstkostenpreis zu liefern [...]” (15. III. 1910). - Anton Grath besuchte die Wiener Staatsgewerbeschule und studierte an der Akademie der bildenden Künste. Er schuf “zahlreiche große Plastiken, besonders religiöse Darstellungen, Denkmäler und Portraits sowie Medaillen und Plaketten”, die sich “durch solide Technik, strenge Stilisierung und frische naive Auffassung” auszeichnen (Thieme/B. XIV, 544). - Die Photographie zeigt “St. Georg als Bekrönungsgruppe für einen Monumentalbrunnen”. Einige der Briefe im linken Rand gelocht (keine bzw. nur minimale Textberührung), eine Doublette der Photographie mit textidenter Beschriftung beiliegend. In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

Neben kleinen Gedichten finden sich vorwiegend Mitteilungen privaten Charakters, Nachrichten über zukünftige Aufenthalte, über ihr Wohlergehen u. a.: "Es will mir, wie ich da sitze und an Sie denke, plötzlich erscheinen, als hätte ich in meinem gestrigen Schreiben an Sie nur den Tag genannt, an dem ich sie erwarte, nicht die Stunde [...]" (dat. Wien, 7. VI. 1925). - Absolventin der Lehrerinnenanstalt St. Anna in Wien, wohin sie mit ihrer Mutter nach deren Gatten Tod übersiedelt war, debütierte die 18jährige 1882 als Lyrikerin. Sich später dem Naturalismus zuwendend, veröffentlichte sie Romane und Schauspiele, darunter das 1901 mit dem Bauernfeld-Preis ausgezeichnete Stück "Der Schatten" (1901). Popularität und hohe Auflagen erlangte sie durch mehrere Veröffentlichungen in der "3-Mark-Reihe" des Ullstein-Verlags. Probably the most famous 19th century American journalist he of "Go West young man" immortality founded and edited "The New Yorker" 1834-41 then the reknowned "New York Tribune" 1841 whose popularity gained its editor's oft-expressed views wide influence; ran as Democratic presidential candidate in 1872 but was soundly defeated by incumbent U.S. Grant. Slightly damaged ALS 2pp 5" X 8" n.p. 1871 November 20. Very good. Addressed to Ralph Meecker. Slight mounting trace along top edge of second page where the right margin is also closely cropped affecting the "ley" in Greeley. An unusual defacement consists of two small side by side "windows" the leftmost measuring 1�" X �" the rightmost �" X �" neatly excised near the top of the first page just above "Dear Ralph." While censorship in letters normally consists of the removal of the recipient's name or signer's name this defacement appears just below the "New-York Tribune" letterhead the larger whole to the left of "Nov. 20" where some writers indicate the city from whence they write and the smaller to the right of the same phrase where the letter's year would have appeared. Above this latter whole "1871" has been added in another hand then crossed out. Four or so words on the verso are affected by this. All this suggests that for some reason the defacer didn't want anyone reading the letter to know where or when it was written -- odd since the letter is not controversial in content but rather written to a gardener or landscaper! Reads in part: "About my planting if I could have a bushel of Hickory Nuts a bush of best nuts and a bushel of White oak Acorns planted on my lot. Single 8-cent U.S. flag stamp at upper right. Fine. Green fills the left side of this envelope with his bold handsome inscription and signature in black fineline: "To / Paul Johnston / with / good wishes -- / John Green." Il remercie de l'envoi d'un livre de Camus. Juillet 1971. L'écrivain passe ses vacances en Eure-et-Loir. Il travaille à son discours de réception à l'Académie française tout en corrigeant les épreuves pour la sortie de ses Oeuvres en Pléiade. "Cette année est une année de bouleversements et il me semble que tout le monde est atteint - mais Dieu est là". Dans la seconde lettre, il évoque avec joie l'introduction de José Cabanis à cette édition en préparation. 1973. Il vient de finir la lecture d'un ouvrage de Max Jacob "où les beautés ne manquent pas ; malgré cette crainte panique de Dieu" (janvier 1973). - A propos d'une lettre de jeunesse de Gide. "Elle est dure, glaciale, assez belle dans sa forme. N'est-il pas remarquable qu'à 26 ans il écrivait déjà comme il devait écrire - ou à peu près - toute sa vie. La propriété des termes, quelques maniérismes, le plaisir qu'il a visiblement pris à bien dire. Tout y est" (juin 1973) . - Il évoque la mort de Gide, la maladie de sa soeur Anne, ses déménagements... (juillet 1973) - A propos du journal de Paul Claudel "beaucoup plus intéressant que je le croyais d'abord"... (s.d.). Bel ensemble.
