The Chevalier shows a thought system that he describes as «holistic» including historical political and scientific reflections. Louis Chevalier de SADE If we take the French Revolution as the birth of an experiment both secular and political the Chevalier de Sade was without doubt one of its early critics. Not only of the Revolution which had many other detractors but of its political ideology which would go on profoundly to impact the two hundred years that followed. What he calls «positive politics» is «based on reasoning and experience». «The theory did have some attractions for me; I studied it with care I savored its principles. Now I see their value only in terms of the impact of their implementation what we've seen them produce in the peoples of which history has given me knowledge. This is my method; I know that it is all in all the opposite of the methods utilized by the men who have governed us and written our constitutions to this very day without deviation. This continuous divergence between what has been done and what should never have been done increased my confidence in the path to be followed and at the same time fortified my determination to keep to the views I had adopted of judging laws by the historic consequences they entail rather than by the lyrical supposedly conclusive metaphysical arguments with which these innovators continually and still to this day assault us.» The Chevalier de Sade who saw the world in terms of his own time and place could be nothing other than a Royalist. There were practically no examples of democracy in the history known to the Chevalier apart from the Classical democracies of Greece and Rome which had been experiments only in very elitist forms of democracy. These were very well known to this political scientist whose papers contain 7000 pages dedicated to the history of the Classical world. The republic ushered in by the Revolution was more than just a political system – it was the realization of a philosophical political ideal. And while most of those opposed to the new regime saw in it above all a threat to their personal situations their religious beliefs or even more simply their habits the writings of the Chevalier de Sade show no such dogmatic influence; or at least he never uses dogma to justify his arguments. Louis de Sade a gentleman without a fortune and without significant ties was conservative through philosophical and historical conviction and not out of interest. It is with this perfect intellectual honesty that he studies the essays memoirs and political or theoretical works of his contemporaries. Running counter to Enlightenment thought the Chevalier's view of society owed very little to philosophy. Though he puts together a serious theoretical history of the development of Man from the condition of «savages» to the forging of various societies he does not posit Man's ideal nature as some of his contemporaries did. Folding marks inherent to the mailing of the letter. A moving letter from the poet who in response to a biographer’s question offers his impertinent correspondent a disillusioned reflection on the poet’s right to control interpretation: ""Que vous dire Je ne puis vous conseiller dans le détail ni m'amuser à rectifier ceci ou cela. Je me considère pour ce qui est de ce que j'écris comme dépourvu de droit d'orienter ce qui s'écrit de moi ce qui n'est que de peu précéder l'époque où on ne me demandera même plus on avis."" Yet the poet protests against this institutionalisation that seems to hasten the close of his career emphasising the importance of his most recent poetic works: ""puisque vous voulez compléter votre livre n'oubliez pas que dans le temps qui s'est passé depuis que l'avez écrit il n'y a pas eu que Le Fou d'Elsa La M.à .m. La mise à mort et Blanche ou l'oubli. Mais aussi Le voyage de Hollande augmentée de quelques poèmes dans la seconde édition et l'Elégie à Pablo Neruda."" The recipient of the letter could be Hubert Juin who published an essay on Aragon with Gallimard in 1960 though the tone here seems rather abrupt for so distinguished a critic. Another work devoted to Aragon appeared around the same period: Georges Sadoul’s Aragon in the series Poètes d'aujourd'hui no. 159 Seghers 1967—but none of the titles mentioned are missing and he had not previously written a book on Aragon. Unless it was Roland Desné author of the article cited by Aragon in his postscript ""La Semaine sainte d'Aragon"" Le Français dans le monde no. 21 December 1963 pp. 41–48. unknown

Written from the Grand Hôtel de Grandcamp-les-Bains Calvados in blue ink on a folded sheet of white paper. A transverse fold inherent to the posting of the letter and four small perforations affecting the text but not impeding its reading. The mention of Grandcamp-les-Bains - where Aragon seems to have been only once during the summer of his seventeenth year - and the signature - of an early form - lead us to think that the letter could have been written in the summer of 1914. Philippe Forest in his biography of Aragon confirms that it was indeed at Grandcamp-les-Bains where his family had rented fifty rooms in a large seaside hotel to accommodate family and friends that the future poet learned the news of mobilization. The handwriting less rounded than on manuscripts prior to the 1920s however seems to us later and we are therefore not in a position to confirm the date of 1914. unknown

In his missive full of solicitude esteem and respect for the work of writing of his unfortunate correspondent who wishes to publish his manuscript Louis Calaferte apologizes first of all for the delay independent of his will taken for to answer him: ""I waited waited waited - always hoping to be able to bring you a happy news concerning the possible edition of your work of bookstore"" to then confess to him and to criticize ""a certain immobilism at those people who do not take anymore no risk of editing and are more fond of imbecility of the genre ""best-seller"" than books relating to a certain erudition "" . Louis Calaferte unsuccessful intermediary between this writer and the world of Parisian publishers is ""sorry because in my opinion it seems to me that an edition of this type would have been necessary."" He proposes during his next visit to Paris to hand him the manuscript which he has unsuccessfully proposed to the publishing houses and which he calls ""your notebook"" or to bring it to him in his bookstore more later. 4to. 2 pp. A letter of thanks from the Duke of Württemberg for assistance received by way of his good friend Nicolas Maillot de la Treille, court chaplain and advisor to Elector Karl Theodor. The Duke fears, however, that Maillot has enthused too much about him. A planned meeting with the addressee would be postponed due to adverse circumstances, including the illness of one of his daughters and himself. Louis Eugene hopes to be able to leave the next day and, after four or five days on the road, reach Paris: "Je ne pois assez vous témoigner combien je suis pénétré des soins officieux dont vous daignez me prévenir d'une manière si obligeante. Je ne puis les attribuer qu'à l'amitié de M. L'Abbé Maillot, l'ami le plus chaud que je connoitre. Mais aussi j'ai tout bien de craindre qu'il ne vous ait communiqué les préjugés beaucoup trop avantageux qu'il a contracté en ma faveur [...] Une de mes filles est tombée malades quelques jours avant [...]". - Paper slightly browned, in good condition.

Louis II de Bourbon, prince de Condé, French prince, general, and pretender to the throne (1621-1686).
Autograph letter signed. No place, but probably Château de Chantilly, Oise, 5. III. 1683.
4to. 1 p. on bifolium with integral address panel. Two black wax seals. To a Monsieur Forget, probably the nobleman Jean Forget, esteemed for his expertise in falconry, discussing the Prince's most recent acquisition: a Labrador Falcon (Gerfaut d'Islande) just brought in by a local peasant, which he intends to leave in the hands of a courtier named Bernard. The animal does not appear to be hurt, and in particular the wings were not damaged in the capture, but it does seem a bit ruffled, and the Prince would like the animal looked over by Forget. Would he like to send a man to collect the bird, or should the Prince have it delivered by one of his falconers?. - "Un paisan de deus lieus d'icy ma aporté ce matin un gerfau d'islande qui a vos rerueles dens un panié. Je l'a mis entre les mains de bernar qui ma promis d'en avoir grandsoin. Il ne paroit pas qu'il aie de mal; il n'a point de francs rompues aux ailes; il ce a quelques unes un peu froisées, mais bernar dit que ce n'est rien pour rien qu'en le prenan on ne luy ait point fait de mal dans le corps. J'attendray d'avoir de vos nouvelles avant que de le recevoir. Mandes moy si vous voulez envoier icy quelqu'un pour vous le portir ou si vous voulez qu'on vous le renvoie; en ce cas il envoirai un de mes fauconiers vous le portir [...]". - The Prince of Condé fought for France in the Thirty Years' War, but at its conclusion turned against the monarchy with fellow nobles outraged in what became known as the Fronde rebellion. The coat of arms Condé uses in his wax seals is not that of the Condé branch family, but the house of Bourbon itself. The letter was, however, sent well after his rebellion (and subsequent rehabilitation) during his countryside retirement, which he spent in the company of literary greats such as Bossuet, Pierre Nicole, and Bourdaloue. - A special appreciation of falconry ran in the family of the de Forgets: a descendant, Claude-Édouard, marquis de Forget, would serve under Louis XVI as commandant général de la fauconnerie du Roi. - Traces of old folds; some wrinkling, leaves numbered "no 8" and "no 9" in an old hand. Generally very well preserved with both seals in excellent condition.

Large oblong 8vo. ¾ p. With address. Written as Duc d'Orleans to the Duc de Bar, thanking him and giving him instructions: "[...] delivrer et mettre hors de gallere par force Jean Lucas [...] Vueillez escripre a voz gens et officiers de pardeca Que Ilz vueillent mettre a pleine delivrance led[it] Jehan Lucas Et vous me ferez plaisir tres grant [...]". - Counter-signed by Jean Coterau, treasurer to Louis XI, Charles VIII, and Louis XII. One day previously, the army of King Charles VIII of France had crossed Mont Ginèvre and thus started the French army's first Italian campaign for the Kingdom of Naples, marking the beginning of the Italian wars, which were to last until 1559. Charles had detached Louis with an army of 10,000 men which were to support the efforts of the fleet. The French fleet defeated the Neapolitans, and on Sept. 8, four days after the writing of the present letter, the Duke achieved a decisive victory over the Neapolitan troops, which had landed at Rapallo east of Genoa. - Some brownstaining and with insignificant paper defects, some touching the signatures. Insightful letter to his son Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, Count of Toulouse, during the Nine Years' War: "Je suis content de lestat que vous m’avez envoié de la Cav[ale]rie je voy avec plesir la quantité de beaux rég[imen]ts qu il y a il faut travailler a remettre les autres cest ce que vous devés bien mettre dans la teste des officiers. Jay veu avec plesir la petite carte que vous mavés envoiée ou tous les camps d’Aht [!] et de ses environs sont marqués. Continués a faire tout ce que vous devés et a voir tout ce que vous pourrés pour essaier de devenir tel que je vous desire" ("I am happy with the condition that you have sent me of the cavalry. It is with pleasure that I see the quantity of beautiful regiments that there are, work needs to be done in order to fix the others. That is what you must get into the heads of the officers. I saw with pleasure the small map that you sent me, where all the camps of Aht and is surroundings are marked. Continue to do all that you must and see to everything that you can in order to try to become as I want you to be"). - The Siege of Ath in present-day Belgium lasted from 15 May 1697 to 5 June, when the allied garrison capitulated to the French. The French commander Vauban was praised for the efficiency and speed at which his troops captured the eight-bastion fortress that Vauban himself had designed 25 years earlier. This feat put great pressure on the allies to negotiate the treaty of Ryswick that would end the war on 30 October 1697. - Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon (1678-1737) was the last legitimate son of Louis XIV. At the age of five he was named Admiral of France, and following his participation in the Nine Years' War on the Spanish Netherlands front, he rose to the honorary rank of lieutenant general of the King’s armies. In his actual military career, Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon successfully commanded the French fleet in the Battle of Málaga (1704). During the regency he served as minister of the Navy. - With minor browning and tears to the folds.

Folio. 9 pp. on double leaves. With address. To Isaac de Pas (1618-1688), Marquis de Feuquières, French ambassador to Sweden. In French, but mostly written in secret cipher, above which the recipient has transcribed the French meaning. Louis explains that, despite appearances, France cannot continue to support Sweden due to the superior naval power of England and is unable to send a flotilla of ships in her aid. Instead, he orders movement of French land forces; he also approves the suggestion of marriage between the King of Sweden and the daughter of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg: "[...] A squadron of 20 or 30 ships that I might send to Sweden's aid would be too weak to withstand the forces of England; nor is it suitable to the state of my affairs to [...] support this war by putting to sea a flotilla equal to that Crown's [...] Sweden's affairs are everywhere in such a bad state, yet she does not blame her own ill conduct. I have even learned that her ruin in Prussia is so great that it is no longer possible to negotiate for peace with them until [Sweden is] convinced of the nearly insurmountable obstacles to naval assistance that they have expected from me [...] Since the greatest interest of the King of Sweden in marriage is that it contributes to make peace and to re-establish him in the Empire, I would view somewhat indifferently the choice that he would make [...]" (transl.). - The Treaties of Nijmegen, signed in 1678 and 1679, brought an end to the Dutch Wars.
