On joint les portraits gravées de deux comédiennes qui créèrent la pièce : Madeleine Brohan (Duchesse de Réville) et Émilie Broisat (Lucy Watson), ainsi qu'une belle lettre autographe signée de l'auteur (2 p. in-8, "Ronjoux", 17 septembre 1894) dans laquelle il évoque la reprise de sa pièce Cabotins, ses projet en cours et les premiers pas de son enfant : "ce jeune homme est entré dans ma chambre, tout seul, sur ses imperceptibles pieds, il est venu à moi, chancelant mais ravi & m'a dit papa... ou caca, je ne sais pas au juste, mais enfin je ne lui en ai pas été moins reconnaissant". 4to. and 8vo. Altogether 4½ pp. Three charming letters in Pailleron's typical style, concerning corrections and new work. In the dated letter from 18 February 1915, Pailleron thanks the recipient for his annotations to a text, announcing that she took up all suggestions except for changing some "savoury" citations: "Merci Mille fois, mais c'est trop! Vous avez lu avec trop d'attention et vous vous étes donné trop de peine! Je le vois à vos petites notes, qui sont toutes si justes! Je n'avais pas corrigé, depuis [?], cependant, les citations de la Belle dame ni celle de Henri Henne? Ces dernières surtout me semblaient savoureuses - J'ai donc suivi vos conseils [...]". - In a letter that can be dated around 1919/20, Pailleron announces three chapters on Georges Sand and Alfred de Musset very likely from her 1920 book "La Revue des Deux Mondes et la Comédie Française" for the recipient to read (or skim): "Je porte à la poste le même temps que cette lettre les 3 chapitres Musset G. Sand dont j'ai parlé hier - le 4me n'est pas recopié mais nous avons le temps. Lisez les, parcourez les, et dites moi s'ils sont intéressants (je ne sais plus). Ensuite ils seront remis à qui vous savez. [...]". - The third letter, dated 29 November, contains enthusiastic praise for the unidentified recipient: "L'idée était exquise de délicatesse le mystère touchant le tout enfin digne de ce que vous faites toujours! J'ai chargé votre charmante femme de toute ma reconnaissance pour vous mais, j'ai encore besoin le soin de vous dire merci de tout cœur [...]". - One letter on stationery with embossed monogram and another on stationery with mourning border. All letters with traces of former mounting. Two minor tears.

Sarcastic but jovial letter to the novelist and literary critic André Beaunier (1869-1925) concerning criticism of Pailleron's "Voltaire au faubourg Saint-Germain" by the philosopher Julien Benda and private matters: "J'ai été très contente de lire l'article Benda avez vous reçu des nouvelles de ce philosophe? Est-il satisfait? Vous avez hier jeté 99 pierres dans son jardin avec cette phrase: 'Ce n'est pas que de compiler et ne p. l'analyse au bout du compte' et 'Il distingue en effet nos Sensations et nos Emotions etc - 'Mais quoi? Il doit être fort heureux quand même et l'article est délicat et charmant.' Qu'en dit l'abbé?' Pardon! Je veux dire 'Qu'en dit Doumie?'. Je devais être rentrée depuis longtemps mais il faisait si beau que j'ai un peu prolongé, et puis j'avais un balcon à remplacer; vous savez par expérience qu'un balcon en entraîne un autre... aussi j'ai voulé profiter du temps adorable que nous avons pour finir les préparations de l'hiver - mon dernier invité d'ailleurs, n'est parti que le 14 - c'était J. Boulenger (J'ai vu cet été la jolie Laclos qui m'a parlé de vous avec grand plaisir) Au milieu de tant cela j'ai eu très peu de vos nouvelles ... Momentanement je commence à recevoir des livres, et a sentir que S. Germ[ain] serait mieux en volume que Manuscrit. Comment appelez vous cela? Est-ce une Sensation, une emotion? Une Impression? - de l'emulation? Ce S. Get [?] actuellement raboté et soumis à un régime de patinage, et de notes. Helás il-y en a - Enfin il faut sa toilette, j'espère que bientôt il peuve sentir seul - quel mal il m'a donné - Ah! les cordes [?] du 17siècle je les connais! et je peux vous dire qu'elles sont ecœurants d'ailleurs. - Je voudrais bien apprendre à mon retour - la semaine prochaine je pense - qu'Irène a une sœur et qu'elle se fait entendre cet hiver? [...]". - Pailleron playfully taunts Benda and shows great intimacy with Beaunier, who had been an editor and critic at "Revue des deux mondes" and "L'Écho de Paris". The novel "Voltaire au faubourg Saint-Germain" was published in 1925. - Sardonic humor also characterizes the charming quotation by Pailleron: "La douceur des femmes plaît aux hommes. Ils la prennent pour de la soumission et c'est une chise infiniment comique" ("Men enjoy the placidity of women. They take it for submission and that is an infinitely comical thing"). - Letter on stationery with embossed monogram. All autographs with traces of former mounting. Well preserved.

8vo and 12mo. Altogether 18 pp. on 28 ff. With a lithographed portrait after Paul Mathey (8vo) and two contemporary photographs. A collection of letters spanning more than two decades. Most letters are private and often practical in nature but some give insights into Pailleron's work, his social circles and his private life. The earliest dated letter, from 17 April 1872, is a dinner invitation to the journalist and later director of the Comédie Française, Jules Claretie (1840-1913). Other guests mentioned by Pailleron include the writer Amédée Achard, the illustrator Cham (Amédée de Noé), and the playwright Eugène Labiche: "Mardi prochain, on mange la Bouillabaisse à la maison. Achard, Cham, Labiche etc sont de la fête. Voulez-vous en être aussi - Répondez moi [...] et ne m'envoyez pas un non télégrammique à la dernière heure [...]". - Another friend of Pailleron's was the popular academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), who received tickets for the premiere of Pailleron's last play, "Mieux vaut douceur et Violence" at the Comédie Française on 20 January 1897: "Vous pouvez envoyer prendre 2 places, à la Maison, p[ou]r la premiere de Vendredi, à partir de Jeudi Matin [...]" (Paris, 26 Jan. 1897). - An undated letter to Louis Ulbach shows Pailleron's loyalty to the "Revue des Deux Mondes" that he co-directed. For fear of competition, Pailleron turns down Ulbach's offer to contribute to an unspecified anthology: "Il m'est moralement interdit, vous le comprendrez facilement, d'écrire n'importe quoi dans n'importe quels Recueils qui, de près ou de loin, pourraient faire concurrence à la Revue des deux Mondes, ayant mille raisons et même davantage - de la préfèrer à tous les autres. Excuses moi donc de ne pas pouvoir, malgre tout mon désir, répondre à votre gracieux appel [...]" (identification of the recipient according to a collector's note). - Two particularly substantial letters to an unidentified close friend are written from Pailleron's Château de Ronjoux, where Georges Sand had written most of "Mademoiselle La Quintinie" in 1863. In the earlier letter from 27 July 1895, Pailleron poetically praises the fine weather, proclaiming that they lived in "a veritable Eden" with blue skies, bright sunshine and fresh air: "jamais je n'ai vu le beau pays plus beau [...]". In a letter from 5 October 1898, only months before Pailleron's premature death, he mentions the birth of children in his circle, also referring to the good health of his grandson Robert Bourget-Pailleron, born in 1897. In closing, Pailleron laments the rapid changes to Paris, predicting that within 20 years the city will be "no more than a small New York" minus the "landscape and the commerce". The project that he specifically refers to concerned one of the famous Parisian quays, possibly the Quai Saint-Bernard, stretching from the Pont d'Austerlitz to the Pont de Sully. Pailleron compares the forces set in motion by "speculators and engineers", leaving the old city "transformed, vulgarized, revamped, unrecognizable", to the former Parisian carnival parade "descente de la Courtille". - 4 letters with embossed letterhead of Pailleron's monogram and Paris address, 2 of which allude to the Order of the Garter. Generally well preserved with minor browning and some stains; one letter with a minor tear. All items show traces of former mounting and occasional collector's notes in pencil.

Curious letter addressed to the Chancellor of Austria, probably Rudolf Ramek, expressing his joy over a "new link" forged between the Republic of Austria and the French Republic by "the invention of Mr Belin". - Édouard Belin (1876-1933), who had studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, is today best known as the inventor of the Bélinograph, an ancestor of the fax machine. Painlevé's message either refers to the Bélinograph or to Belin's brand of teleprinters that had been successfully established in 1925, although Belin was not the inventor of this technology. It is very likely that the letter was written during Painlevé's brief second term as Prime Minister of the French Republic (17 April - 22 November 1925). His Austrian homologue at the time was the conservative politician Rudolf Ramek. - Insignificant smudging.

Glückwünsche an die Tageszeitung "Le Matin" und an den Erfinder Édouard Belin zu den bewundernswerten telegraphierten Bildern, den "Belinogrammen", deren Anfänge bereits zwanzig Jahre zurücklagen: "Heureux de féliciter et l'inventeur de vos admirables 'belinogrammes', et le Matin pour sa chlairvoyante initiative d'il ya vingt ans [...]". - Die "New York Times" hatte Belin und dem ihn von Anfang an unterstützenden "Matin" am 5. August 1921 zu der ersten erfolgreichen transatlantischen Übersendung eines faksimilierten Bildes mittels Radiowellen am Vortag gratuliert. Painlevé sollte sich in seiner Funktion als Kriegsminister auch an Belin wenden, den "père de la télévision", und ihn mit der Erfindung eines Kryptographen für militärische Zwecke betrauen. - Mit in Silber gepr. This renowned English historian authored or edited such works as "A History of England" 1831 "The Rise and Progress of the English Commonwealth" 1832 "Truths and Fictions of the Middle Ages" 1837 and the famed four-folume "The History of Normandy and England" 1851-64. ALS 1p lettersheet 4½" X 7¼" Westminster England n.y. ca. 1830. Addressed to "My dear Sir" and the address panel in Palgrave's hand tells us this is "Dr. Roget" Peter Mark Roget 1779-1869 English physician best known for the 1852 "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases" better known as "Roget's Thesaurus". Near fine. Neatly expertly inlaid. Nice personal content. In part: "I should have had very great pleasure in accepting your kind invitation but my father who is eighty six years of age has been suddenly attacked in such a manner as to give us hope to apprehend that I may not be able to go out a fortnight. and do not want to have you in uncertainty. With Mrs. Palgrave's best reports to Mrs. Roget." Francis's father was Meyer Cohen a member of the London Stock Exchange whose year of birth in unknown but who died in 1831 helping date this letter. Boldly penned in Palgrave's usual small abysmal script. Overall a quite attractive example. unknown

Philologischer Kommentar zur Publikation des Veroneser Schriftstellers und Archäologen Girolamo Orti, "Illustrazione di una medaglia inedita spettante a Segesta e di due tori trovati nelle rovine della stessa città" (Verona 1828). Palin interessiert sich für die phönizische Inschrift einer der von Orti beschriebenen Stierstatuetten, die er hebräisch transkribiert und französisch übersetzt. Dazu bietet er eine symbolistische Interpretation der Votivstatue, die einen Stier mit gesenktem Haupt und gebeugtem Knie zeigt: "Oracle ou parole de Memphis: Tharé averti: soit qu'on doive entendre que Tharé averti par quelque reponse particulière de l'oracle de Memphis a consacré la pièce votive; ou plutôt qu'instruit dans la réligion Memphitique il a consacré une de ces grandes paroles exprimée par le Symbole de la terre qui flechit le genou et baise la tête. C'est la parole: que toute la terre benisse en humble soumission le Seigneur, l'éternel, son soutien et appui". - Palin kritisiert eine ältere Interpretation der Statue, wonach es sich um ein Werk des alttestamentarischen Terach, des Vaters Abrahams handle, der aus Sicht der Kirchenväter der Erfinder der Bildniskunst gewesen sei: "Il fut un tems ou quelque savant assurait qu'on voit ici un monument de l'origine des images à l'époque de Saray et de Tharé, qui en étoient les inventeurs selon des pères de l'eglise et la tradition orientale: un souvenir conservé à Memphis de l'institution d'une de ces images par Tharé averti de dieu, et dans le sens de la doctrine pure, patriarcale, dont l'expression par des images, [...] et prémieres lettres d'écriture, eut toutefois revolté Abraham, fils ou petit-fils de Tharé. Des nos jours ce serait un jeu d'imagination inexcusable [...]". - Palin war ein bedeutender Diplomat im Dienste des schwedischen Königshauses mit Stationen in Madrid, Wien, Dresden und Konstantinopel. Er unternahm mehrere Reisen nach Kleinasien, Griechenland und Ägypten, wo er zweimal bis zu den Nilkatarakten gelangte. 1824 wurde er beurlaubt und widmete sich gänzlich seinen ägyptologischen Studien, darunter Analysen des 1804 entdeckten Steins von Rosette. - Wohlerhalten.

In den zwanziger Jahren häufig auf internationalen Gastspielreisen zu sehen, trat Pallenberg auch wiederholt in Wien auf und hatte hier in der von Hugo von Hofmannsthal für ihn geschriebenen Titelrolle der 1923 uraufgeführten Komödie ‘Der Unbestechliche’ einen triumphalen Erfolg. Daneben übernahm er Rollen in Stumm- und Tonfilmen, so etwa in Fritz Kortners ‘Der brave Sünder’ (1931), und spielte den Mephisto in Reinhardts ‘Faust’-Inszenierung bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Lehensbrief für "Ernst Grafen und Herrn von und zu Firmian" über den "Dorfhof, nun Dorfmayergut genannt, zu Kalchofen No. 16". - Karl Fürst Palm-Gundelfingen war der Urenkel des Hofkammerrats und Generalkriegskommissariats-Direktors Johann David Palm-Gundelfingen, der 1683 gemeinsam mit Graf Rüdiger von Starhemberg die Verteidigung Wiens gegen die Türken geleitet und Kaiser Leopold I. die Reichskrone Ungarns gerettet hatte. Trotz fünf Ehen - deren letzte seit 1824 mit Leopoldine geb. Gräfin von Abensperg-Traun - blieb Karl kinderlos und war somit der letzte Sproß der von Johann David begründeten sog. Älteren, seit 1783 reichsfürstlichen Linie Palm-Gundelfingen. - Mit einigen anderen Unterschriften. Stärker angestaubt und gefaltet; ohne das angehängte Siegel.
