Am 3. August 1911 fand die Hochzeit zwischen Ney und Hoogstraten statt. 1914 gründeten beide mit Fritz Reitz das erste Elly-Ney-Trio. Die Pianistin starb am 31. März 1968 in Tutzing am Starnberger See. - Beiliegend ein gedr. Billett mit Dank für Wünsche zu ihrem Geburtstag sowie eine ms. Karte ihrer Sekretärin.

This obscure Revolutionary War figure is remembered for "Nicholson's Regiment" a militia unit he commanded from New York raised in Quebec from New York soldiers their task being to help defend Canada; they were formed in 1776 and disbanded late that year. ALS 1p 8½" X 11" New York 1785 March 9. Addressed to Evans Wharry likely a "Nicholson's Regiment" officer. Very good. Moderate even age toning. Asks Wharry to take care of a promissory note. In part: ".Capt Black is dayly at me for the amount of the note I gave him last winter on your account. take such measures either by payment or otherwise as will releive sic me from such applications." Attractive interesting and uncommon. Comes with large early 20th century catalogue slip from pioneering autograph dealer Forest H. Sweet of Battle Creek Michigan. unknown

Nick Gaetano: two postcards, signed by the artist
Two 4" x 6" (105 x 148 mm) postcards. The first postcard shows a dam, drawn Art Deco style with clearcut geometric ocher and purple shapes with the illustrator's characteristic style upon a burgundy background. This postcard is SIGNED by Nick Gaetano with the mention "Thomas" on pencil. Back of the postcard features the pencil-written mention "Nick Gaetano, airbrush." The second postcard is white. Instead of an illustration, it features a handwritten note with pen: "07.23.[20]01 Thomas — sorry that it took so long — 7 years — [unreadable]" boldly SIGNED. Back of the postcard features the pencil-written mention "Nick Gaetano" and a pencil tracing of a dollar bill. The second postcard show a very light crease on the left half. Aside from that, both are in neat condition. Dubbed "the accidental Objectivist" in 2011, Nicholas Gaetano (1944-) is mostly known for designing covers for 10 Ayn Rand books. His 25th Anniversary Edition cover art for Atlas Shrugged made him seen in the whole United States. However, he "is also an award-winning artist, illustrator, and photographer whose work is in the collections of the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. He’s created covers for F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tom Wolfe, Dominick Dunne, H. P. Lovecraft, Agatha Christie, among many others. As an illustrator, he is best known for his distinctive Art Deco style, but Gaetano’s paintings tend toward the abstract. Cy Twombly is a recognizable influence. A recent series features fluid spills of black paint on plastic sheets. Gaetano has exhibited widely, most recently at Roberts & Tilton and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art." (Interview Magazine, "The Accidental Objectivist", 2011) He now sells Ayn Rand-related or -inspired art at the Cordair art gallery. Gaetano's hand signatures are scarce and quite hard to find. This one stems from a personal friendship and from the pre-9/11 period. Whether framed and hung on a wall, placed on a support or simply put on a buffet top, this will be a fine piece for any Ayn Rand or Art Deco collector.

Da nützt Ihnen nichts bewußt Geschriebenes. Ich fand nur (denn ich bin ein Wegschmeißer) diesen Notizzettel [...] vermutlich abends hingeschmiert und morgens korrigiert. Das vertikal Durchgestrichene auf der Rückseite ist in ein anderes Gedicht gewandert. Das Ganze nennt sich am Ende Literatur - es ist eigentlich komisch [...]". - Mit einigen eh. Korrekturen in Kugelstift, einer eh. Notiz in rotem Kugelstift und Abklatschspuren einer Kopie. Beiliegend ein eh. Dankesbrief Joachim Rufs für die übersendeten Autographen, eine ms. Seit 1884 unterrichtete sie Gesang, zunächst am Konservatorium der Stadt Wien, seit 1895 am Sternschen Konservatorium in Berlin. - Leichte Abklatsch- und Wischspuren, Spur einer alten Faltung.

An das "Veranstaltungsbüro des 'Dresdner Blumentages'" mit der Mitteilung über die Fertigstellung eines Beitrags: "Der erbetene Beitrag zum Blumentag-Buch ist so gut wie fertig, bedarf nur noch ernster Redaktion. Bitte um gef. Mitteilung, bis wann [...] er in Ihren Händen sein müsste. Umfang ca. 25-30 Druckseiten [...]". - Erste Bekanntheit erlangte Jean Louis Nicodé als Begleiter der Sopranistin Désirée Artôt de Padilla auf einer Konzertreise nach Rumänien und Galizien 1878 wurde er als Hauptlehrer des Klavierspiels an das Dresdner Konservatorium verpflichtet, das er aber sieben Jahre darauf infolge von Differenzen wegen seiner neudeutschen Einstellung wieder verließ. Anschließend dirigierte er drei Jahre lang die Dresdner Philharmonischen Konzerte und gründete 1893 die Nicodékonzerte, für die er die Chemnitzer Stadtkapelle heranzog und 1896 einen eignen Chor bildete. "Nicodé ist in seinen Hauptwerken einer der begabtesten Nachfolger der Lisztschen Richtung. Glänzender Pianist, begann er mit klassizistischen Klavierwerken, unter denen die 'Variation' dem op. 17 seines Lehrers [Friedrich] Kiel an Satzkunst und Kraft nichts nachgeben. Die symphonische Dichtung 'Maria Stuart' verläuft in Ouvertüren-Form, die 'Jagd nach dem Glück' ist als Introduktion und Scherzo ein glänzendes Virtuosenstück, die ‚Symphonische Suite' bewegt sich ehrerbietig und zurückhaltend in Beethovenschen Spuren, und die 'Symphonischen Variationen' sind neben Hans Kößlers gleichnamigem Werk der bedeutendste Beitrag zu dieser Gattung zwischen dem Widmungsträger Brahms und Reger" (MGG IX, S. 1446). - Die Unterschrift ausgeschnitten.

Oblong 8vo. Autograph musical manuscript. 95 pp. (notes in four lines; pp. 96-260 empty systems only), 6 unnumbered leaves of index. Contemporary calf monogrammed in gilt "J. G. N. 1785" on upper cover. Edges sprinkled in red. A rediscovered late work: apparently the final, never completed and never published collection of 78 preludes for Protestant church songs by the highly esteemed J. G. Nicolai (cf. ADB XXIII, 593), who served as the organist at Rudolstadt for nearly forty years. The book must have served him to write down newly composed choral preludes as they were occasioned by the ecclesiastical year. The manuscript begins with "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" for the first Sunday in Advent; Christmastime includes chorals such as "Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her", "In dulci jubilo", and "O Jesulein süß"; Passiontide includes "O Lamm Gottes unschuldig", "Da Jesu an dem Kreuze stund" and "O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß". For Easter, Nicolai wrote preludes to "Christ lag in Todesbanden", "Christ ist erstanden" and "Heut' triumphieret Gottes Sohn", for Pentecost to "Komm heiliger Geist" and "Der heilige Geist hernieder". The abrupt end of the manuscript after "Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren Dank sagen" (19th Sunday after Trinity) is undoubtedly due to the composer's final illness; the last Sundays of the ecclesiastical year are missing, though the lines of the systems have been inked in. - It cannot be determined whether the present series was intended for publication. Nicolai did publish several such collections of preludes, but this might just as well constitute a personal compilation for his own use at church services, as suggested by occasional abbreviated parts with varied figuration, likely indicating improvisation. Nicolai had already published many of the chorals for which we here find preludes in his "Vollständiges Choralbuch über die Fürstlich Schwarzburg-Rudolstädtischen Kirchengesänge" (Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1765). The attribution of the volume is secured by the cover monogram and the watermark (crowned double-headed eagle with the insignia of the Empire, based on the arms of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt). - Binding slightly rubbed and bumped; some worming to lower cover; insignificant browning to interior. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Hübsches, großformatiges Albumblatt: sechs Takte für Tenor und Klavierbegleitung ("No. 2 aus Opus 1", "Ich muss hinaus, ich muss zu Dir" nach Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben). Nicolai wirkte ab 1865 als Direktor der königlichen Musikschule in Den Haag und Lehrer am dortigen Konservatorium. Mit seiner Zeitschrift "Caecilia" förderte er nach Kräften Wagner und Liszt. "Hoffmann lernte Nicolai am 26. August 1855 in Den Haag kennen, als dieser bei J. W. Holtrop u. a. Lieder von ihm spielte; er vertonte Gedichte Hoffmanns, u. a. 'Glücklich wer auf Gott vertraut', 'Ich muß hinaus, ich muß zu dir' und 'Loverkens'" (E. Poettgens, Hoffmann von Fallersleben und die Lande niederländischer Zunge, S. 579f.). - Oben und unten auf ein knapp quadratisches Maß beschnitten; Spuren mittiger Querfaltung.
