Paris, Bruno Paulin Gaston, French writer (1839-1903).

12mo and 8vo. 3 pp. on 4 ff. Both letters written to thank an unidentified friend for favourable reviews. In the letter from 13 April 1898, the work to which Paris refers is not clearly identifiable. As he goes on to decry the moral bankruptcy of France, Paris refers to the ongoing Dreyfus affair. The politically motivated persecution and condemnation of Dreyfus clashed with Paris's scientific standards and his passion for truth, especially as several philologists became indirectly involved in the case. In February 1898 in the defamation trial against Émile Zola, the defence brought forward five experts from the École Nationale des Chartes, the school for archivist-paleographs where Gaston Paris had been educated and of whose council he was a member. They testified that the only evidence against Dreyfus was in fact not written by him but by another officer. While accurate, their opinion was withheld from the public, and Zola was convicted. This further injustice probably led to Gaston Paris's bitter remarks in the letter: "Your note gave me great pleasure and afforded me a moment of distraction from the painful thoughts that never stop haunting me in light of the sad moral condition of our country and the deep plunge that seems to accelerate with every day. Will this terrible nightmare ever be lifted from our breast? In the meantime, it oppresses us so severely that at times we find it difficul to breathe [...]". - In his letter from 14 April 1901, Paris thanks the recipient for a very favourable review of his 1901 book "François Villon", a biography of the best-known French poet of the Late Middle Ages. Despite the review, Paris is highly critical of his own work: "Je viens de lire votre article sur mon Villon, et je vous en remercie vivement en même temps que je vous en félicite. Vous avez esquissé en quelques traits frais et justes la physionomie du poète escolier et fait plus d'un remarque pénétrant dans sa rapidité. Ce que vous dites de mon travail, - dont je ne suis pas, pour ma part, bien satisfait, - prouve votre amitié pour moi, dont je n'ai jamais douté et qui m'est très précieuse [...]". - Both letters with traces of former mounting. "Monsieur le Président, Puisque vous l'agréez, le programme de la cérémonie serait réglé ainsi qu'il suit: A onze heures précises, en l'Eglise Saint Joseph, Veni Creator solennel présidé par moi. Après la 1ère strophe la messe basse commence et l'hymne se continue. A la fin de la messe, chant solennel du Domine Salvum ... On se rend ensuite au Palais de Justice où, quand chacun est à sa place, monsieur le Président prononce son discours. "Yes I know exactly what you mean about taking orders from everyone. We all have to learn to swing with the punches and when we fail to do so seems to be when we get into deep water. I must confess we all misstep once in awhile though and we should try to understand those who get crossed up in our presence." 8to. Altogether 5 pp. on 6 ff. The earliest of the three letters, from 7 January 1891, contains an interesting reference to Alphonse Daudet's play "L'Obstacle", here misattributed to Louis Montégut, who had contributed illustrations to the publication of the play. Apparently, the unidentified recipient had previously pointed to some similarities between Daudet's play and Parodi's early piece "Ulm le parricide". Parodi agrees that his idea must have inspired the author of "L'Obstacle". Far from being offended, he insists that there is no better proof "for the vitality of an idea than its fecundity" and that he can only write "works that contain the seed of new works". - The second letter, from 24 March 1899, to a journalist of "Le Gaulois", accompanied Parodin's play "Le pape". He stresses the importance of the piece that he had "written with love" and expresses his hopes for a good review of what would be one of his final plays: "Je m'empresse de vous envoyer mon drame - Le pape - paru hier librairie, après avoir été publié dans le Correspondant. C'est un ouvrage de longue haleine, qui m'a coûté beaucoup de travail, que j'ai écrit avec amour et auquel - pourquoi ne pas l'avouer? - j'attache une extrême importance. J'espère que vous me ferez l'honneur d'en rendre compte aux lecteurs du Gaulois et de le juger avec votre habituelle compétence [...]". - The final letter is a charming artefact of the history of marketing. Parodi responds to an editor of the so-called "Album Mariani", a long-running publication that was part of the publicity for a popular tonic wine with cocoa extract called Vin Mariani. The "Album Mariani", published from 1894 to 1925, offered a vast collection of praises of the certainly stimulating beverage by celebrities like Sarah Bernhardt and Émile Zola, complete with portraits, reproduced autographs and short biographies. In return for his contribution, Parodi had received two copies of the Album and six bottles of Vin Mariani, which he apparently much appreciated: "Voici le portrait, autographe et la notice biographique que vous m'avez fait l'honneur de me demander par le plus aimable des intermédiaires. J'ai reçu les deux magnifiques albums et les six précieuses bouteilles. Je vous remercie vivement, vous et monsieur Mariani, de ce double présent qui m'a été deux fois agréable [...]" (14 June 1899). - The final letter on stationery with a beautiful watermark in reference to the newly built Eiffel Tower; the letter dated 24 March 1899 on stationery of the Parisian publisher "A. Hennuyer". All letters with traces of former mounting. Well preserved.

This American novelist and popular historian is best remembered for "Country Lawyer" 1939 a memoir of his attorney father's practice in rural New York and its sequel "The Big Family" 1941. Two Typed Letters Signed 7¼" X 10½" and 8½" X 11" Bridgeport CT 1948 January 30 and 1948 March 24. Addressed to Mrs. Madlener -- Elaine Madlener noted Chicago collector and office of The Manuscript Society. First letter is very good with mild age toning and small paper clip impression; second letter is slightly less with minor wrinkles and paper clip stain. Good content to this admirer who wanted some books signed. "I always feel highly complimented when readers want their books autographed" he remarks in the first letter "especially if the request comes after reading." Nice discussion of his current project: "I am in the throes of finishing a novel of old New York. It is the story of the Fabulous Forties when the Croton Aqueduct was being built. I have been reading the newspapers of the day through the microfilm until my eyes are quite ready for a vacation. Papers of that particular period were printed on stock which has become so brittle that they break all to pieces when handled and the microfilm has really saved them from extinction. The Aqueduct was under construction for ten years and I have been fortunate enough to get hold of diaries kept by an old fellow who was curator of a museum there during the time and who was also an enthusiastic member of the Aqueduct family -- which was fought tooth and nail by the well water enthusiasts." In the second letter he editorializes about. well editors: ".I had my editor here and we were polishing off the new copy. My work is pretty messy when it is first finished and it is full of erasures and interlineations. If the editor wants any changes and there was never an editor who didn't want some little change made I like to have it done before the final copy is typed. The printers are very bossy nowadays and they demand the most perfect copy. Then if there is to be serial consideration there has to be a copy for the magazines and another for the moving pictures." 8vo and 12mo. Altogether 5 pp. on 12 ff. Charming letters by a pioneer of Science Fiction, concerning his work as a science journalist. In the only dated letter from 22 August 1868, Parville requests the recipient to forward the letter to the journalist Adrien Marx (1837-1906), thanking him facetiously for a "malicious article" in Le Figaro: "Je ne sais pas où est le Palais de Marx. Aiez donc la complaisance de le remercier en lui remettant ces quelques lignes. J'irai au Figaro au premier jour lui serrer la main. Je garde son article malicieux pour le jour où je me presenterai à la Académie. Si je n'entre pas, ma foi, ce ne sera pas de sa faute. Je lui en suis très reconnaissant [...]". - In what is possibly the most interesting letter of the collection, Parville asks the recipient to use his influence in order to help publish a short article concerning an invention that was disputed between Germany and France: "Je n'ai guères profité de vos anciennes et bonnes relations pour me faire de la reclame, hein? Et cependant aujourd'hui je cède à la tentation. Il s'agit d'une invention dont les Allemands veulent nous enlever l'honneur. Et je désirerais prendre date. Ci joint un entrefilet qui modifié selon les nécéssités du journal peuvent prendre place soit aux Echos, soit aux Nouvelles. De par ta toute puissance, je serais heureux de pouvoir le lire demain [...]" (Auteuil, Friday). - A very personal letter dated 26 April was written to thank the recipient for publishing a short text in "Le Figaro" that was very important to Parville: "Mon Cher Ami quel effet! Bonté divine, ce Figaro est inouï - Ces 10 lignes m'ont fait plus de bien que 20 de mes feuilletons. Je ne veux pas laisser passer la journée sans t'exprimer toute ma gratitude et tous mes remerciements [...]". - Two letters on stationery with embossed monogram. Minimal browning and one letter with several pin holes. All letters with traces of former mounting.
