The great and prolific character actor and comedian appeared in hundreds of films such as "Charley's Aunt" 1915 and "Ruggles of Red Gap" 1916 between the teens and the 1960s. "Good luck always / Sincerely / Charlie Ruggles / to / Donald Burnell -- / 1961" on an irregularly-trimmed roughly rectangular 3" X 4�" slip n.p. Good plus. Tape stain at each corner touching upon several words but not Ruggles' signature. Accompanied by an 8" X 10" glossy black and white photograph of Ruggles a half-length pose showing Ruggles in later life leaning over a bench in workman's duds and apron clutching his glasses. Military Engineer; Served in America and Egypt : Major-General 1825; Inspector-General of Fortifications
six and a half manuscript pages. Folio report to Sir John Stuart Lieut-General and commander of the forces on recent military engineering in Sicily sent fron Messina February 11th 1810 with particular notice taken of costs incurred. The report covers the period from March 3rd 1806 and refers to the previous overall commanders General Fox 1806 and Lieut-General Sir John Moore the latter of whom in March 1807 in expectation of the likelihood of an attack from Napoleonic forces put Sicily upon a high alert initiating defences in principal cities such as Messina and Syracuse and repairs to smaller ports and batteries. Stuart who had taken Ischia and Procida the previous year capturing Murat's gunboats retired to Messina and in 1810 repulsed an enemy attack with great loss close by. He is probably responsible for the docketing found on the final page. Sir John Stuart 1759-1815 Lieut-general; born in Georgia USA; fought against colonists in the war of independence and was present at the surrender of Yorktown 1781; reponsiple for victory in Battle of Alexandria 1801; and gained victory in Calabria 1806. The 21 letters cover the period 1737-1765 there are also 9 other related documents inc. a 1763 plan of land in Silkland 'My Father's Release' 1727 and a breakdown of the �5000 purchase money of Frithelstock Manor c.1765. Richard Stevens was High Sheriff of Devon in 1737 and an M.P. in the 1760s the letters are full of interesting side-lights of this wealthy landed member of the gentry and of his circle. June 30th 1737 " Being this morning with Mr Down otter hunting and riding over one of his fields all four of ye horses leggs slid away and fell on my foot." July 29th 1737 " Mr Chichester of Arlington has got a very good deer near his house . & has desired my dogs to assist him . ." May 19th 1739 " As we are struggling for Liberty at Plymouth against the Artifices and threats of the Minister and the Admiralty ." May 25th 1739 " I forbore writing since in hopes to have assu'd you the Distemper has made no progress beyond the Custom House." July 17th 1739 " War is the word with us as well as in the Country but surely the Coasting Shipps may have protections from hence if the Masters would apply." March 11th 1768 " Patty . has rather too great an appetite complaining of a swelling in her belly . I cant think it proceeds from any criminal cause ." Cornish Mining Manuscript Correspondence & Letters 1958 - 1969
An extensive archive of manuscript letters postcards notes etc from A. K. Hamilton Jenkin; with lengthy and detailed typescript replies etc from Justin Brooke relating to the Cornish Mining industry in relation to the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall " series. The archive consists of approximately 20 postcards and 49 manuscript letters mainly of two pages in the hand of A.K.H.J for instance " I am now revising my St. Erth St. Hilary Breage "Part". I wonder if you have any M. J. Mining Journal extracts on Ennys Wheal Virgin. I have notes from a M.S. report of circa 1847 but little or nothing from the M. J." From Justin Brooke to A.K.H.J there is a large batch of typescript sheets of " minor amendments " to " Mines and Miners " Index of Mines Map reference of Mines etc. Also 81 typescript copies of letters from J. B. to A.K.H.J with copious amounts of information on Cornish mines and the mining industry suggestions and information for the " Mines and Miners " series. For instance " the enlarged sett of Calstock Consols had an eastern boundary somewhere about the Kelly Railway line since Spargo 1865 p.138 notes that a fine lode of gossan 23' wide had been cut by the company about 60 fms. west of the engine shaft which rather suggests that the old Trelawny Consols sett or the western part of it was included in Calstock Consols. The last named continued to work until about 1866 . " All contained within an elegant custom made drop sided box. A.K.H.M published the highly respected series of 16 volumes of the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall" between the years 1961-70 this detailed correspondence covers this period. Justin Brooke who was proof reading the series suggesting alterations and amendments as well as contributing large quantities of original information much of which only he had access to through his own large collection of books manuscripts and maps relating to the Cornish mining industry. Justin Brook's popular work " Stannary Tales the Shady Side of Mining " published in 1980 was dedicated " To A. K. Hamilton Jenkin who guided my steps ". Cloth. Fine. Manuscript. Hardcover

A hurried partial pencil portrait apparently of A. J. Munnings with two further portrait sketches on the verso thought to be in the same hand
A partially completed pencil portrait bears the legend not the signature " A. J. by Orpen." We believe A. J. to refer to Orpen's well known fellow artist Munnings whom Orpen attempted to emulate in his chosen field of equestrian painting. On the verso are two further portrait sketches in pencil one of which is Maurice Codner. These sketches are on lined paper with a centre fold not affecting the main portrait. Sold with a one page manuscript letter dated 17/11/29 by Maurice Codner the society portrait painter to Sir William Orpen. Of Irish birth Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen studied at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and Slade School in London. A highly successful and fashionable portrait painter he also became a War Artist from 1917 specialising in scenes from the Western Front. Very Good. Manuscript. unknown

12pp. Late 18th century manuscript treatise on the Moslem religion. The author probably a classicist appears to have been a traveller in Mediterranean regions and deeply interested in the plight of Greece and therefore of their then overlords. His attempt to understand the Turks included this account of their religion since he considered their 'polity' to be entirely ecclesiastical. Late Sixteenth Century Copy Petition of the Mayor and Burgesses of Totnes Devon
c.1590 1590. The modern synopsis of the document is . "The Rt Hon Francis Earle of Bedford Lord Lieut of Devon note in corner that the petition must be with the Lords of the Council not the Lord Lieut. Recites Totnes is an ancient Corporation and the Mayor and ex-Mayor are the justices of the Peace within the Borough. That the town stands on the River Dart 7 miles from Dartmouth and from thence a daily passage by water within 4 miles of Torbay a spacious bay able to receive 500 ships and about 14 hrs sail from the coast of Normandy and Brittany and well -known to the French and others by continual trade. Is required to have a magazine of 84 barrells of powder with lead and match at the town charge. The principal strength is 60 trained soldiers 40 musketeers and 20 cornets who are summoned to general musters sometimes 6 or 8 miles from the town and that year 20 miles leaving the town naked and indefensible. The petitioners to be allowed to raise a trained band of 100 and have same privilege as Weymouth Plymouth Dartmouth and Barnstaple to choose our officers and muster only within our precincts." On watermarked paper neatly folded and bound into half calf lettered in gilt along the spine with marbled boards. Delivered contemporaneously with the Armada 1588 this petition from the good officers of Totnes reflects the continued threat from across the channel and the need for towns along the channel coast to arm themselves sufficently. 4 page signed letter addressed Sheffield Jan. 1836 to an unknown recipient who would appear to be an editor of a published journal. " As the Bill for the enforcement of my Claims on the East India Company will be brought in as early as possible in the coming session . may I beg the favour of you giving early publicity in your excellent journal . As a question of the deepest interest to the holders of Newspaper Property independently of its bearing on the liberty of the Press I venture to hope that there is no Proprietor or Editor of a Public Journal in England who will withhold his support to these claims of Compensation." Born at Flushing near Falmouth the son of a farmer he spent his youth at sea and in 1797 was captured by the French and held prisoner of war at Corunna. He travelled extensively including to Arabia writing several important works on the area eventually settling in India where he established a periodical the Calcutta Journal in 1818. This venture proved highly successful but in 1823 the paper's outspoken criticisms of the East India Company led to the expulsion of Buckingham from India and the suppression of the paper by John Adam the acting governor-general in 1823. His case was brought before a select committee of the House of Commons in 1834 and a pension of �500 a year was subsequently awarded to Buckingham. A highly poignant letter which reflects the immense animosity between Buckingham and the East India Company of whom he was so critical and despite being awarded compensation by the House of Commons he obviously still had not received the award at the time he wrote this letter. This he-man American actor played professional basketball Boston Celtics and baseball Brooklyn Dodgers Chicago Cubs before Hollywood called; though he appeared in "Pat and Mike" in 1952 with Tracy and Hepburn "Old Yeller" in 1957 and a handful of films it's primarily for television's "The Rifleman" 1958-63 that he's remembered. Bold "Best Wishes to / Donald Burnell / Chuck / Connors" in blue ballpoint on an oddly-trimmed roughly rectangular slip 3�" X 2�" n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Good plus. Small tape stain at upper left and lower right touching upon several letters. Accompanied by a superb 8" X 10" glossy photograph a still from the 1969 made-for-television film "The Profane Comedy" showing an angry Connors holding a crumpled piece of paper. A wonderful archive of historically significant with detailed civil war content: 1 Two detailed Civil War diaries; 2 Ransom's first war letter home; 3 superb signed Ransom Civil War cartes des vistecdv; 4 Other photos: a tintype cdv gem photo and another hand colored cdv of his wife Louie Lucy Perham; 5 A book titled "Sacred Poems"; 6 Ransom's business card and property tag and lastly but of huge importance to genealogists; 7 Early name and address book of Dick Ransom mentioning many family members and Battery mates. Dick Ransom was from Chicago Illinois; enlisted on 8/7/1862 as a private. On 8/29/1862 he mustered into Chicago Mercantile Light Artillery. He was discharged for disability on 3/24/1863. Specifics: Diary #1 1861 2.5 x 3.5 inches full year January 1st through December 31st 1861 120 pages of which approx. 250 days with entries recorded dark brown period ink very legible. Great war content and a number of remarks made in great excitement; Lincoln as President; death of Col. Ellsworth and Steven Douglas. Battle excitement and the rout of the federal army at the first battle of Bull Run at Manassas. Diary #2 1862 : 3 x 5 inches entries from Aug. 7th 1862 through Mar. 6th 1863. 29 pages brown period ink very legible. Cover reads " Dick Ransom mercantile Battery Chicago Artillary 100 Washington Street Chicago". Signed in ink in Dick Ransom's hand on first page; "Dick Ransom 100 Washington Street Chicago Ill." Also included: 3 wonderful cdv/tintype of Lucy Ransom. Dick speaks of his proposal for marriage to Lucy in his 1861 diary. First is a tintype/cdv format of Lucy backmark Chicago dated Aug 19th 1866 and signed on reverse in Dick's handin brown ink "Louie Perham 1866 Dick Ransom". Secondly mounted Gem Albuman photo of Lucy on cdv mount ca. 1865. Cdv is handcolored image of Lucy dated Jan 23rd 1868. The address book includes all of Dick's friends and family and many of Mercantile Battery mates including Sinclair Willard Gunlock and Medal of Honor winner James Dunne. 3 x 5 inches many pages of entries mouse chew on cover edges. The date of 1883 can be found on the fep. Brown ink inscriptions this book is an important genealogy record and helps to identify all the people referred to in the diaries. Here are some snippets: " January 9th "my Birthday 19 years old born at South Woodstock Vermont""march 4th Abe Lincoln President of the United States"" Mar 19th " wrote a long letter to Lucy . with a proposal for marrige which I am sure will be accepted.I am in great anxiety for an answer". tintype of Lucy included "rec'd an answer alright = O.K."" " July 25- breacking accounts the battle and rout of the Union army though better than at first suspected ". " Sept. 25- think of joining T.E.G. Ransoms 11th regiment at Cairo had a letter from him wants me". referring to Gen. Ransom. " Oct 6th - another letter from T.E. G. Ransom still urges me. " " Aug 7th 1862 I enlisted in the Mercantile Battery of the Artillary of the U.S. for three years unless sooner discharges"" Aug 9th I was sworn in by capt. christopher U.S. mustering officer of Chicago". Top edge of text block is a little dust-stained. A baseball card of Billy Williams has been placed loosely in the front of the book 1988 Pacific Trading Cards Inc. / Baseball Legends #90. INSCRIBED on the verso of the front flyleaf "To Kevin. Best Always Billy Williams." Although the last name is not given this was Kevin Reid a author of baseball books. He co-authored Enos Slaughter's "Country Boy" and we have several books that belonged to him. The recto of the front flyleaf also has two other inscriptions to Kevin. "Kev-- 7:00 a.m. phone calls three on a date burning beers counselling sessions mine wow- what can I say-- Go Cubs! Sarah." And "Kevin you're responsible for this whole thing and one of these days I'll make it up to you!" We're not sure who signed this one. It is possible that it is Enos Slaughter's initials. This colorful and legendary steamboat captain pioneered steamboating on the upper Mississippi River in the mid-19th century; he was first president of the Galena Dubuque and Minnesota Packet Company and founded the city of Winona Minnesota. Partly-printed DS 1p 8" X 10" Chicago IL 1871 January 1. Very good. Faint age toning; paper loss approx. 3�" X 2" at upper left corner affecting portion of printed text but not holograph portion. Printed "Judgment Note" promissory note acknowledging that Smith owes Nathan Corwith five thousand dollars at ten percent annual interest. Signed boldly twice by Smith. Verso bears docket penned and signed WILLIAM R. ROWLEY 1824-86 one of Galena's famous nine generals and at this date the circuit clerk; this native New Yorker enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company D of the 45th Illinois Volunteers in 1861 promoted to captain in 1862 and lieutenant colonel in 1864 and finally named brevet general; he fought at Fort Donelson Shiloh and Vicksburg; in 1864 he was named military secretary on General Grant's staff. Accompanied by a second larger 8�" X 14" Partly-printed Document Signed Chicago IL 1871 n.d. Very good. Printed "Narr. and Cognovit" literally Complaint and Confession legal document in which the top two-thirds the Narration portion consists of plaintiff Nathan Corwith referring to the promissory note just described of defendant Orrin Smith and demanding payment signed by Corwith's attorney M.M. Miller and the lower third the Cognovit portion consists of Smith's attorney Edward A. Small acknowledging same -- all couched in delightfully archaic and convoluted legalese of course. Verso of this document too bears a docket penned and signed by William R. Rowley. M.M. MILLER - was a noted Galena Illinois attorney who left Yale University to return home and join the famous Washburne Lead Mine Regiment during the Civil War; he was made commander of a colored regiment the 9th Louisiana Regiment in which every man was wounded or killed in the famous June 7 1863 Battle of Milliken's Bend part of the Vicksburg Campaign. EDWARD A. SMALL 1829-82 was another noted Galena attorney though in 1869 he relocated to Chicago. Plaintiff NATHAN CORWITH 1819-89 was a noted Galena pig lead broker clothier and then head of a prominent banking family that founded the Bank of Galena which he served as president. Why Captain Smith borrowed $5000 a huge sum of money in 1871 from Corwith is unknown though it's a reasonable assumption that it involved river commerce in some way -- perhaps purchase of another packet boat An intriguing and scarce pair in any case involving and signed by a number of prominent northwest Illinoisans. Documents signed by Captain Smith are rarely encountered. hardcover

This German Egyptologist is renowned for discovering one of the earliest medical documents in existence -- an ancient Egyptian papyri giving a cancer treatment -- and sought to further popularize all things Egyptian through of all things historical romances set in Egypt. AQS 1p 4" X 4" n.p. 1885 August. Near fine. Faintly age toned. In Ebers interesting and stylized tiny script in vibrant purple ink he boldly pens four brief lines signing handsomely and dating below. Because of Ebers' calligraphy a number of the words elude translation and those that don't aren't sufficient to allow identifying this quotation. But an attractive item nonetheless accompanied by a modern facsimile of a 19th century head-and-shoulders sketch of Ebers. unknown

This Illinois attorney served with distinction under U.S. Grant with the 49th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was first elected to Congress while a soldier 1863-65; he was again elected as a Democrat and served from 1873 to 1887. This noted Illinois senator 1949-67 was also a respected economist author of "The Theory of Wages" 1934 "Economy in the National Government" 1952 "In the Fullness of Time" 1972 and other titles. Outstanding TLS 1p 8" X 10�" Washington DC 1966 January 21. Addressed to Mary McCarthy and John A. Werner. Fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead the famed liberal Democrat writes to two educators at the North Chicago Community High School "about guiding the direction of your lives." In part: "You and your contemporaries will do well to contemplate the fact that although the future may seem wholly obscure to you right now the pattern of your lives is to a considerable extent already determined. Your character will not change greatly even though with the years you may acquire greater wisdom and experience. nd it is your character that determines your conduct at each moment of decision in your life. Certainly it is never too late to strive for self-improvement. But if at the age of seventeen or eighteen you are habitually dishonest or lazy or greedy or cruel you probably do not have any incentive to reform yourself. If you are honest and humane and unselfish now you have a set of standards that will guide you in the paths of righteousness and help you to shun false values." Goes on along these frank but inspirational lines - excellent original content not simply boilerplate politician pablum. Large bold full signature in blue ballpoint. The Continental Congress awarded this Revolutionary War patriot and officer and member of the "New York Sons of Liberty" a sword of honor; later he served as sheriff 1784-87 1791-95 and as mayor 1807-08 of New York City. Signature and title "Shr'ff"and "Cepi Corpus" "I have the body" in his hand on verso of a partial partly-printed DS 1p 5�" X 2 3/4" New York NY 1791 November 29. Very good. Partly-printed portion on recto with wax-affixed paper seal present and in excellent condition seems to suggest this is a summons of some sort for a person named Peleg Brown and holograph docket on verso notes "Mayors Court / Peleg Brown / V. / Saml. Stockwell" with date. Willett signs large and bold below this docket affirming he has executed the summons. Comes with modern reproduction of a small handsome steel-engraved engraving of Willett. unknown

This obscure Revolutionary War figure is remembered for "Nicholson's Regiment" a militia unit he commanded from New York raised in Quebec from New York soldiers their task being to help defend Canada; they were formed in 1776 and disbanded late that year. ALS 1p 8�" X 11" New York 1785 March 9. Addressed to Evans Wharry likely a "Nicholson's Regiment" officer. Very good. Moderate even age toning. Asks Wharry to take care of a promissory note. In part: ".Capt Black is dayly at me for the amount of the note I gave him last winter on your account. take such measures either by payment or otherwise as will releive sic me from such applications." Attractive interesting and uncommon. Comes with large early 20th century catalogue slip from pioneering autograph dealer Forest H. Sweet of Battle Creek Michigan. unknown

According to Earl B. McElfresh author of "Maps and Mapmakers of the Civil War" Paine was "One of the finest topographical engineers in the Union Army of the Potomac. A hardworking unassuming staff officer. When Meade made his perilous night ride from Taneytown Maryland to the Gettysburg battlefield on July 1 1863 it was Paine who led the way." Superb content AL unsigned 4pp 5" X 8" Head Quarters Army of the Potomac 1864 March 10. Addressed to "Friend Powell" George May Powell 1835-1905 Treasury Department statistician entrepreneur inventor evangelist philanthropist social reformer cartographer etc. Near fine. Delightful letter acknowledging receipt of photographs commenting: "They arrived during my absence on a cavalry raid. .I came very near going with Col. Dahlgren. I had made every arrangement to go but received an order to guide the 6th Corps to Madison Court House so that I was absent when he started. Gen Custer coming through Madison Court House on his raid I joined him and as it now proves was on the most successful branch of the movements. Col. Dahlgren was one of my most intimate friends here. He made out the plan relating to the time and distances in my tent. When he mentioned Sunday as the day for starting I mentioned my views upon that point. He said he agreed with me in relation to the duty of keeping the Sabbath but said that time must not be lost and Sunday was mentioned as the earliest time they could leave He said in the same connection that he never undertook any such enterprise without asking God's blessing." Ulric Dahlgren 1842-64 son of Admiral John Dahlgren was the youngest colonel in the U.S. Army and was killed in a March 2nd raid to liberate Union troops from Libby Prison and Belle Isle near Richmond -- bringing about the controversial "Dahlgren Affair" for on his body were discovered documents ordering him to assassinate Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. Discussing the presidential campaign Paine notes: "I do hope there will be no split in the Presidential campaign. I do not believe the Republicans can bring a stronger candidate than Prest Lincoln. I think Fremont would not stand the ghost of a chance for an election though I think he would make a good president." Paine also expresses strong views about "the dancing question" -- "Abstractly dancing is not improper and if one is sure that no encouragement is given to those forms times and places of dancing that are objectionable by indulging in that which is unobjectionable in itself I can see no possibility of harm and nothing improper in it. There are many paths from virtue to vice besides going right over a precipice. One of them is the dancing hall which inclines down words at quite an angle and many have in the bewilderment of the dance found themselves at the lower end before they were aware of it. The dividing line between morality and immorality between virtue and vice is like the equatorial or other lines on the earths surface not seen marked across our path but it requires careful observation to know just when we cross. It is best to keep as clear as possible of this boundary line." And there ends unsigned this fascinating letter rare and unusual. unknown
