MEIMBERG Julius 1917 2012
Typed Letter Signed
This Knight's Cross recipient was a Luftwaffe ace who scored all of his victories on the Western Front -- 54 downed enemy aircraft in more than 250 combat missions. TLS in German heavy stock 8" X 5 3/4" Munster Germany 24 September 1997. Addressed to M.K. Schmidt. Near fine. On a correspondence card the right side of which bears a 3" X 5" reproduction of a well-known WW2-era head-and-shoulders portrait of Meimberg in uniform wearing his Knight's Cross Meimberg writes to an American admirer. Below his portrait on the right side Meimberg signs boldly in blue ink. With original envelope. Though a small format letter accomplished later in life the content is exceptional and being typed alongside a likeness of Meimberg in his prime the presentation is superb. Meimberg offers "reminiscences about a time that lay more than a half century behind us." He mentions musing about fallen comrades offers some serious thoughts about his thinking as group commander of the II Jagdeschwader 53 Pik-As group when he was 27 years old "At the time it was clear to me that the war for Germany was lost. I hoped for a political solution." and remarks how he knows today that war is always the result of failed politics. He bemoans the fate of his generation but is pleased that a war among European nations is unthinkable today and that other peoples might learn from their history. A touching and provocative letter. unknown

Congress first printed this commemorative volume in 1897 which dates this signature; it sold well enough that a second printing of 4000 sets appeared in 1901. Interestingly Grosvenor was named chairman of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission in 1910 serving until his death in 1917. A handsome and relevant item signed by a Chickamauga veteran. unknown

PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE OF PHARMACY
Autograph Manuscript Unsigned
Founded in 1821 and today operated under the auspice of the University of Pennsylvania this institution is the first pharmaceutical college in North America. AM unsigned 2pp 6" X 8" n.p. n.d. Very good. Slight separations along single horizontal fold. Headed "Library of the Philada College of Pharmacy / Circular" this unsigned essay is a thumbnail history of this institution's library prepared to be typeset and distributed for collection-building purposes. "More than twenty years ago" it begins "the College of Pharmacy commenced the formation of a Library for the use of its members and their apprentices when by the Liberality of some of the early friends of the Institution and a small appropriation from the College about five hundred volumes were collected; soon after this effort the college procured a lot on Ground rent and erected their present hall on Felbert Street above 7th. This large expenditure has prevented the College from doing any thing more for the library except to bind periodicals taken in exchange for our Journal until the past Year. we have come to the conclusion that the next most important object to promote the interest of our Profession is the building up of our Library and extending its usefulness by collecting together every thing we can procure in relation to the early as well as present history of Pharmacy and its colateral branches. we earnestly request from our members and other interested in the prosperity of our useful Institution such books as they may be willing to spare from their own collections." There's a prescription for success! The ink paper and handwriting are all consistent with a date roughly 20 years after the founding of the college: circa 1840. Fascinating bit of pharmaceutical and library history. unknown

BRIGHT Jesse D. 1812 75 and WHITCOMB James 1795 1852
Signed Stone Lithograph
U.S. senators from Indiana. Most unusual item: single leaf 7" X 9" probably the frontispiece of an Indiana state history captioned "Indiana" at the top. Below this is a charming stone lithographed pastoral scene depicting a shirtless man in the foreground chopping down a tree vast fields extending behind him; the sun is just breaking over the horizon and a bull is romping playfully. Facsimile signatures of Indiana senators Albert S. White and Edward A. Hannegan appear below this. Their Senate terms overlapped from 1845 to '49 thus dating this frontispiece. Their two successors Bright who served 1845-62 and Whitcomb 1849-52 have each signed boldly beneath the facsimiles. Very good. Moderately foxed throughout but overall attractive. An interesting pairing of Hoosiers on an appropriate if odd item. Whitcomb died in office while Bright was expelled from the Senate for treason. unknown

MOREFIELD Thomas W. 1850 ?
Autograph Letter Signed
Supposedly the youngest soldier to enlist in the Civil War; others such as Johnny Clem born 1851 the "Union Drummer Boy of Chickamauga" were indeed younger although Clem did not carry a weapon until later was not officially mustered in and his wages were paid out of donations by the officers. Morefield's credentials therefore appear sound. ALS 1p 8" X 10" Elkhorn WI 1892 March 10. Addressed to W.E. Ambler. Near fine. Slight mailing folds. To a journalist or scholar researching Morefield's claim to fame Morefield transmits a photograph "Coppied from a tin tipe that I had taken soon after I Enlisted" not present. He agrees to "write up my Army Experience I dont know jest what you want do you want to know whare the Regiments went and What we went through I will say this much to you if it hendent of been for the Exposure of Camp life and picket duty and Rheumatism and diseases resulting from Rheumatism that I contracted while In the Army my Experience would been a good one." DANA Charles Anderson 1819 97
Autograph Letter Signed
American newspaper editor who took part in the famed Brook Farm utopian experiment 1841-46 managed Horace Greeley's "New York Tribune" 1847-62 and owned and edited the "New York Sun" 1868-97. ALS 2pp 5" X 8" New York NY 1868 September 1. Addressed to Mr. Hall. Very good. On "Office of the New-York Sun" letterhead Dana recommends various French dictionaries at length: "The prince of all dictionaries is Littres. I would almost rather have it for general philology than Grimm's German dictionary. It is a little more than half published & will take 18 months to finish. It is to be in four parts to be bound either in 2 or 4 vols. The two anterior parts cost unbound $22.50 & the others will cost as much or $45 for the whole. I get 10 per cent disct on this price. But it is a great book. No other Fr. Dict. approaches it in value. The Dict. de l'academie 3 vols. costs bound $40. The Dict. of Langlais 2 vols small 4to costs $27. The Dict. of Bescherelle 2 vols bound costs $30. These are all first class works. If you want a simple French dictionary of a common sort all in French I can buy you a good enough secondhand one I suppose for $5. But every such scholar as you ought to have Littre." Most interesting -- Dana was clearly quite the lingual connoisseur. unknown
