New York's Republican governor from 1915 to 1919 when defeated by Alfred E. Smith first gained fame in 1912 when as a Manhattan district attorney he prosecuted a New York City police lieutenant for the murder of a Times Square gambling house operator. PS 9" X 11½" n.p. 1914 November 30. Very good. Photographic image 6" X 9" shows minor silvering but is overall bold and quite striking; mild age toning. A dramatic head-and-shoulders portrait of a determined-looking Whitman taken by noted New York photographer Pirie MacDonald "Photographer of Men." Below his image on the mounting board Whitman signs large and bold "Yours Truly / Charles S. Whitman / Nov. 30 - 1914." in black fountain pen. Despite mild wear quite choice and attractive. unknown

The still-attached mimeographed text printed on cheap newsprint stock and usually absent but here in very good condition captions this image "After White House Parley on Farm Bill" and reads in part: "Senator George D. Aiken Vermont Republican the administration's farm leader in the Senate is shown leaving the White House after attending a Republican legislative leaders' meeting yesterday." "Mrs. Wright" was the wife of novelist Harold Bell Wright 1872-1944 author of such popular moralizing fiction as "The Shepherd of the Hills" and "The Winning of Barbara Worth." Memorable French dilettante artist famed fop and hanger-on a legendary man of fashion and society wit who befriended royalty and nobility as well as Lord Byron and Benjamin Disraeli. Third person ALS 1p 4½" X 7" lightly tipped to heavy stock album leaf n.p. 1844 February 23. Very good. Lightly age toned. Interesting third-person note signed twice within the text. In part: "Count D'Orsay presents his compliments to Mr Crowley and thanks him very much for the Etching which is admirable -- Mr Landseer Saw it and is quite delighted with it. Count D'Orsay remembers very well having had the pleasure of being introduced to Mr Crowley by Prince Napoleon." Recipient is most likely Nicholas Joseph Crowley 1819-57 well known IRish portrait painter who resided in London. Landseer of course refers to Edwin Landseer 1802-73 English artist famed for his paintings and sculptures of animals. d'Orsay was well known as a fanatical supporter of all things Bonaparte. Prince Louis Napoleon later Emperor Napoleon III was often hosted at d'Orsay's fashionable residence in London and it may have been during one of these visits that the Prince introduced d'Orsay to Crowley. Quite handsome letter signed two times in the third person with interesting references. unknown

Fine image showing Humphrey half-length seated at his desk reaching for the intercom. Titled "New Treasury Secretary at Work" the text reads in part: "Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey is shown at his desk yesterday as he formally took over the Treasury Department." German wood carver and potter turned stage star famed for his portrayal of Jesus in the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1900 1910 and 1922; so broad was his fame that he even appeared on the front cover of "Time" magazine in 1922. Exceptional PS 12" X 10" image area 8" X 5½" n.p. 1926. Very good. Minor surface soiling. Instead of the usual image of Lang as Jesus looking beatific this striking oblong shot depicts a pensive Lang at a potter's wheel and is captioned in German "Oberammergau: Anton Lang in His Ceramic Workshop." Lang signs boldly in a light area at the lower left of the image area and in a somewhat darker area at the lower right adds "Christ / 1900-10-22. / 1926." Small signed photos of Lang are routine but large and unusual poses such as this are quite scarce. Superb and unusual. unknown

This American film and television director was only the third director to win both an Academy Award and a Cannes Palme d'Or for the same film "Marty" 1955; other films include "Desire Under the Elms" 1958 "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" 1960 "A Gathering of Eagles" 1963 and "David Copperfield" 1969. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Los Angeles CA 1978 November 3. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES 1914-93. Near fine. On "Richmond-Confederate Productions Inc." letterhead Mann chats with this friend from his days in New York in the 1950s. "I was involved in doing a television film during the early part of the summer" he writes "and then was off to Ireland where I spent the last two months preparing a film which unfortunately has collapsed because of a failure in the financing plans. So now I am back here not knowing for sure what I will be doing next but left free to try to catch up on my old correspondence! Maybe sometime we will be able to get the Robert E. Lee project off the ground. Money has been promised from various sources but as yet hasn't materialized. I have learned to count on nothing in this crazy business so it may happen with surprising suddenness or it may not happen at all." Signed simply "Del" in green marker. Mann directed a number of made-for-television movies around this time making it difficult to determine exactly which film he was filming "during the early part of the summer." And it seems this film involving General Lee never came to pass for nothing resembling this appears in the Mann filmography. An interesting letter. unknown

Taft 1889-1953. influential Ohio senator and son of President William Howard Taft; Robert Jr. was son of Martha and Robert and also served Ohio as U.S. senator. PS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. 1955. Very good. Handsome glossy print of renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh's portrait of Robert A. Taft signed on the white lower margin by Martha Taft and at upper left in a grey background area by son Robert Jr. who adds "Wish Best Wishes." Accompanied by a TLS from Martha Taft's long-time assistant Darrah Dunham Wunder 1p 6" X 7½" Cincinnati OH 1955 January 30. Addressed to Gerald L. Arnholt. Near fine. Mrs. Taft suffered a paralyzing stroke in 1949 leaving only her right arm without paralysis; Wunder moved in with the family to help tend to her. In this moving letter to an admirer she recounts the situation and this photograph. In part: "Mrs. Taft is still too ill to write letters. She did manage to sign her name to the photograph of the Senator I am sending you. I also had young Bob autograph it up in the left hand corner. You may remember that Bob Jr. is in the Ohio Legislature having been elected last Fall. He ran 3600 votes ahead of the ticket although it was the first time he had ever been a candidate. Mrs. Taft had a gall bladder operation last September and her recovery is very slow. She now sits up for an hour or two a day but is far from well. We all appreciate the high tribute you pay Senator Taft. He was a wonderful person and it is very difficult to be reconciled to his loss." Signed in full. A most unusual and uncommon portrait -- quite scarce in itself even unsigned as an original Karsh print -- made even more unusual by the signatures of Taft's wife and son. At lower left in black ballpoint Bobertz signs large and bold. Accompanied by a TLS 1p 7¼" X 10½" New York NY 1969 October 28. Addressed to Paul Johnston. Near fine. Good content in which the artist discusses his 1960 stamp design. In part: "For quite a time the Employ the Handicapped stamp was used in this area in rehabilitation work and I am happy to see. that it is still useful. I have no idea of how many of these stamps were issued but the Post Office Department reprinted them twice." Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. Paperback. The three-time Peabody winning five-time Emmy winning broadcast journalist anchored CBS's "Sunday Morning" 1979-97 and gained a huge following for his "On the Road" segments. Signed booklet "Fire Engines & Fire Fighters" edited by Gertrude M. Struck Prairie du Chien WI: Fire Engines and Firefighters Spring 1972 a 24pp small 4to in stiff pictorial wrappers. Kuralt apparently brought his "On the Road" film crew to cover "The Great Fire Engine Race of America" event at which time he signed this heavily pictorial souvenir booklet chronicling this annual race and fire-related tidbits. Near fine. On the front cover which depicts an artist's rendering of a 19th century horse-drawn fire engine racing to a call he inscribes it bold and large at upper left "For Milt -- / best! / Charles Kuralt." Quite unusual and attractive. paperback

Brother of famed Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet Dante Gabriel and of poet Christina this noted English art critic is considered another of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; he edited its publication "The Germ" and also served as art critic for "The Spectator"; as an editor who collected the writings of his famous brother and sister and he also edited and wrote biographies of such literary figures as Keats and Shelley. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4½" X 7" 56 Easton Square N.W. London n.y. November 17. Addressed to Frederick Follett possibly the American newspaper publisher 1841-1912. Very good. Faint inoffensive paper clip stain mark at top of verso. Cordial response to an enquiry reading in part: "To the best of my Knowledge & belief there never was an Index printed to Weldon's Register. If there was I regret to say that it wd. not be in my power to put you in the way of procuring a copy as I have lost sight of the Editor & c of that periodical." Bold attractive signature. Walter Weldon 1832-85 founded "Weldon's Register of Facts and Occurrences relating to Literature the Sciences and the Arts" in 1860 and it appeared monthly until 1863 only. Rossetti apparently appeared in its pages -- hence this exchange. Rather uncommon. unknown

This Canadian-American chemist-inventor and author is credited with a wide range of inventions; he held 58 U.S. patents and 450 foreign patents among them a microcrystalline cellulose for pharmaceutical use and a microcrystalline collagen. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Cincinnati Ohio on November 10 1972 with "First Day of Issue" noted. Fine. FDC for the 8-cent "Pharmacy" stamp. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Much of the front side except for the stamp and cancellation is filled with a typed biographical statement about Battista as follows: "The Battista boy liked the idea of writing letters to tell major corporations how to improve their products. In the 1930's he told a chewing gum company it should coat the sticks with starch so they couldn't stick to the paper in hot weather. In 1955 while working on an idea to make a better rayon tire cord to compete with nylon he came up with a water suspension of cellulose crystals. 'The resulting product is still "revolutionary"' Battista said. He stayed at Princeton until 1970 and in those days came up with a micro-crystalline collagen. This led to the creation of the Avitene hemostat which uses collagen and is now used in every operating room across the nation." Below this on the cover's lower margin the scientist boldly inscribes and signs in black ballpoint: "Wishing Paul Johnston every / success / Orlando A. Battista / 10/31/79." Along with the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy this legendary comedy trio helped create and define physical comedy on film from the 1930s onward. Color IPS magazine stock 7¼" X 8" n.p. n.d. Very good. Homely but not terribly visible tape stains at each corner and one along the left side otherwise clean and attractive. This color matte-finish magazine photograph depicts The Three Stooges in black suits and bow ties one above the other; Moe is at center bottom Curly-Joe is above him with hands on Moe's shoulders and Larry is above him with hands on Curly-Joe's shoulders. All three are wide-eyed in surprise. At lower left near his face Moe writes: "Luck Always / to / Donald Burnell / Sincerely / Moe." Signed Ink Drawing
Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Original signed ink drawing 14½" X 19" n.p. 1931. Very good. Very minor and bit of soiling. Labeled "Cartoons of the Day" in cursive by McCutcheon on the lower margin followed by three subtitles this handsome three-panel piece contains three unrelated topics. The top panel titled "No time to waste" celebrates aviator Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty's June 1931 record-breaking eight-day flight around the world. At Left Post's plane the "Winnie Mae" is about to land and Post leans out holding up two fingers and shouting "Lunch for two!" From a building at right labeled "October Field Moscow" three waiters rush each carrying a large platter one labeled "Zakuski" another "Cabbage Soup" and the third "Cucumbers". Moscow was one of fourteen stops the pair made on their famed flight. The middle panel titled "The Grave Digger gets a big surprise" must have been occasioned by an unexpected rise in the stock market. Next to a street sign showing "Broad" and "Wall" streets a wide-eyed bear rushes away from a tombstone dropping his shovel and exclaiming "Great Scott! He seems to be alive!" The tombstone reads "Mr. Bull / Fatally / Injured / in October / and November / 1929" and a dazed bull is pulling itself up out of the whole. The lower panel titled "When an Idealist runs up against a Realist" shows a puzzled Uncle Sam scratches his chin and reads a cable: "Cablegram / French Proposals / on Debt Moratorium / U.S. to Sacrifice $250000000 / Germany Gets the Benefit / on Only $150000000. / France Sacrifices / Nothing." To the right a sweaty little man gazes at a wall thermometer that's clearly rising pushing up his hat labeled "ADT" to mop his brow and exclaim "Whew!" Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. A delightful trio. unknown

This Norwegian-born explorer and geographer led nine Antarctic expeditions the first in 1933 exploring over 3600 miles via dogsled; he proved that Antarctica is a continent; "Edith Ronne Land" he named after his wife and the "Ronne Ice Shelf" is named after him; he recorded his exploits in his 1961 memoir "Arctic Command." Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Washington DC on 23 June 1971 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 8-cent "Antarctic Treaty 1961-1971" stamp at upper right. At lower left beneath the postal cancellation Ronne signs large and bold in blue ballpoint. Below his handsome signature he inkstamped: "CAPTAIN FINN RONNE USNR / Military Commander - Scientific Leader / Ellsworth Station Edith Ronne Land / ANTARCTICA." He's also placed a large octagonal inkstamp on the cover's verso about the "International Geophysical Year." A superb signature on a superbly appropriate cover. unknown

The influential English geologist is actually best known for his "Origin History and Principles of Gothic Architecture" a 1797 lecture delivered in Edinburgh that was subsequently published in a number of editions; he was father of the noted travel writer Basil Hall 1788-1844. Excellent content ALS 2pp 7¼" X 8 3/4" Edinburgh Scotland 1824 April 20. Addressed simply to "Sir." Very good. Slightest of age toning. Interesting bookish contents reading in part: "I now return with many thanks the books which you have been so kind as to lend me. The following is the list of them which I trust you will find to be correct. The principia of Sir I. Newton translated into English by Motte in two volumes. Robinson's Mechanical Philosophy. Nouvelles experience sur la resistance des fluides. I have used the freedom to keep these books some days longer than I intended to have done; being tempted to run over the last which I have done with great satisfaction having used the freedom to cut open the leaves. The book contains many interesting suggestions towards the execution of the experiments. and I shall be glad to resume it again when I hope for the advantage once more of your advice & assistance. at the same time I beg of you to accept of a copy of my book on Gothic Architecture." Original mimeographed newsprint text sheet present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Joint Armed Services Committee Hears Warren Austin" this vintage image shows a jovial Austin half-length at center examining a document a legislator at each side. Text reads in part "Warren Austin member of the U.N. Security Council conferred with Senate and House Armed Services Committee members in a close door session and recommended enactment of universal military training legislation." A choice and desireable vintage photograph itself scarce -- and relevant to the autograph item it accompanies. unknown

This British nobleman took the family's ancient but decrepit manse and built the magnificent castle known as Alton Towers that stands today; well known as the lay leader of English Catholicism in his day his philanthropic pursuits included constructing a monastery church and schools and earned him the nickname "Good Earl John." Large bold signature in brown ink 2 3/4" X 1 3/4" tipped to 4½" X 7" album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Slight age toning. Below this clipped signature is tipped another slip 3" X 2½" on which is penned in minute 19th century script: "The autograph of John Talbot is the Earl of Shrewsbury the great book collector -- it is genuine & I got it from a person who purchased it in a copy of Wordsworth at the Alton Towers Sale of his library" signed "Hahnhaus." Christie & Mason auctioned off most of the Alton Towers household treasures in July and August of 1857 including a large library. unknown

The original mimeographed caption sheet usually absent for printed on cheap newsprint is still present and in superb condition and captions this image: "Special Cabinet Meeting Weighs Rise in Prices" elaborating "President Truman met in a special meeting with his cabinet today and heard a full-dress discussion of the nation's economy but no immediate government action to halt the rise of high prices was decided upon."
