The champion of civil service reform served Massachusetts for many years as representative and senator. TNS 1p 8" X 10" Washington DC 1901 January 4. Addressed to Walter R. Benjamin 1859-1940 the pioneering autograph dealer whose firm was run by daughter Mary Benjamin until her death not too many years ago. Very good. "Will you send me at Washington the Burke autograph contained in your last Bulletin #1 sent me this morning price $7.50." Strong bold signature with words "at Washington" in Hoar's hand as well. There are a number of historical Burkes this could have been referring to but it is likely that this American politician would have taken an interest in the British statesman. In any case one salivates at the thought! unknown

This legendary California commercial artist headed the Muirson Label Company for a half century; he created the original artwork for the 1988 U.S. "Carreta 1770s" stamp. Signed pseudo-First Day Cover 5½" X 3½" n.p. 1988 August 30. Near fine. Not actually a postally cancelled First Day Cover but a special cover created by the artist himself and hand labeled "First Day of Issue Aug. 30 88." Two 7.6-cent "Carreta1770s" stamps at upper right. At left are two small line drawings of carretas printed in brown ink and the verso is filled with a line drawing captioned "Circa 1800-1850 Californios Rode in Carretas / Crude Wooden Two-Wheeled Carts Drawn by Oxen" also printed in brown ink. Above this drawing the artist pens "Paul -- Used this scene on a cachet. / RR." Rambo pens the two "R"s back to back the second one in reverse so the result looks like a cattle brand. On the front side in the address portion at right Rambo addresses this to Paul Johnston though it was neither mailed nor postally cancelled and in the message portion at left he writes "Paul / Drew this up just / for the celebration. / Ralph Rambo / RR / Used the scene on / reverse on a cachet." A most unusual non-First Day Cover -- though hand labeled "First Day Cover" by the stamp's artist! unknown

Famed Mexican caricaturist and sculptor who worked and exhibited in New York in the 1920s and '30s; in a February 1936 "Time" magazine review of an exhibit of his figures in Manhattan the review noted his "brilliantly colored little figures" wax pieces less than 6" tall; he described Hidalgo as a "round-faced swart young man. hates parties is intensely serious neither drinks nor smokes works ten hours a day owns only one suit of clothes and has traveled by ox cart automobile and burro. studying the Indians of his native land." TLS "Hidalgo" 1p 8¼" X 10 3/4" Mexico City Mexico 1948 November 16. Addressed to Mrs. Granger Brown. Very good. Mailing folds not weakened. Good content in English regarding a figurine he was commissioned to make for this Lake Forest Illinois socialite reading in part: "My suggestion is to make a baby deer. it is very difficult to send these figures by mail across the border I would suggest that we wait until possibly someone from Illinois comes to Mexico and can take them back personally. which will eliminate the many problems and red tape involved with the Customs." Handsome bold signature in brown ink. At lower left he makes a delightful small sketch using blue red and green pencil of a Mexican peasant in large sombrero back to the viewer seated in the grass -- quite charming. Unusual. unknown

This famed hybridizer was legendary in the specialized world of rose cultivation and served as director of research for Jackson & Perkins the renowned California rose cultivator; he was responsible for developing an astonishing 110 rose varieties two of which "Medallion" and "Red Masterpiece" were chosen by the U.S. Post Office for a special stamp issued in 1978. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Shreveport Louisiana on July 11 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Eight 15-cent rose stamps affixed. The versatile diplomat and statesman served as ambassador to the U.S.S.R. 1943-46 then briefly to England; he helped negotiate the 1963 Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty and represented the U.S. at the Paris peace talks on Vietnam served as secretary of commerce governor of New York and more. Partly-printed ADS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1919 October 23. Very good. Several small edge tears archivally mended on verso. Updating form sent out by Whoís Who in America for their 1920-21 edition on pale orange stock. Harrimanís then-brief entry from the previous edition -- he was less than thirty years old at the time! -- is affixed to the blank center area. Harriman has written out "Born 1891 / married Sept. 1915 / Miss Kitty Lanier Lawrence" then at the bottom added his business address signed and dated it. Unusual and by far the earliest Harriman item we have encountered. Comes with a choice original 10" X 8" news agency photograph of 1947 showing Harriman as commerce secretary -- itself scarce. Minor wear bit of soiling and couple of acid spots from editorial staples. "Who's Who in America" updating form consisting of Douglas' typed biographical entry for the 1946-47 edition bearing several additions in her hand and her full signature in black ink at the close. Also bearing various editors' markings in green blue and red ink and pencil. Comes with 5 other related typed documents none signed from Douglas' "Who's Who" records -- a carbon of the above document a 2-page mimeographed chronology no doubt sent by Douglas' congressional office a biographical data form and so on. A fascinating and unusual accompanied by a scarce original 1947 glossy 6½" X 8½" news agency photograph of Douglas carrying a basket of groceries to the House of Representatives. unknown

Cartooning duo who produced the popular "There Oughta Be a Law" syndicated comic strip 1963-81 begun by Al Fagaly in 1944 through 1963. Original India ink drawing 1p 12½" X 9¼" n.p. 1976 December 23. Near fine. Single panel depicting what we assume to be the cartoonists themselves their features are mostly hidden hard at work before drafting tables. Under the heading "Last-Minute Gift Suggestion Dep't." one of the pair asks "What can I get for my wife that's quite expensive but not too flashy" The other replies "How about a jar of instant coffee" Conclusion: "Today's LAW: 'And nothing is stirring in our house either!'" Pencilled draft faintly visible beneath. In addition to the neatly lettered "Whipple and Borth" signature at lower left this piece is signed a second time in "think pink" ink. unknown

Copy of Hanks's Duke University Commencement Address titled ".and I lived with it for the rest of my life" -- signed boldly by Hanks in black fineline near the top of the first page. McCUTCHEON, John T (1870-1949)
Signed Ink Drawing
Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear. A cryptic untitled cartoon consisting of five panels: two across the top one across the middle and two across the bottom. The upper left of the top two panels shows traces of a title underneath pencilled in McCutcheon's hand but erased for some unknown reason that reads: "The Invention as applied to the Automobile." This drawing shows a crazy-looking automobile apparently coal-powered for it bears two large smokestacks bearing a fashionable couple zipping along one of them marveling "A marvelous invention! It cheers the heart sweetens the breath and prevents bagging at the knees." To the right of this the next panel depicts a biplane aloft also apparently coal-powered showing one large smokestack cruising above the earth a voice from within asking "Hey down there is this the right road to Singapore" From the earth far below appears a voice bubble containing Chinese characters. A pencilled caption in McCutcheon's hand below this has likewise been erased a couple words decipherable but not enough to make sense of it. The large wide middle panel shows a gargantuan metal ship -- a sailing ship and steamboat appear small as ants in the foreground -- chugging along also apparently coal-powered with several humongous smokestacks. The lower left panel depicts a strange propeller-driven rocket of some sort again apparently coal-powered showing a smokestack -- possibly a missile -- zipping from west to east far above the earth; a pair of tiny figures on North America seem to cheer it along and its destination in Europe is a tiny city outcropping labeled "Potsd--." Finally at lower right the last panel shows two tiny figures in what might be a junkyard. In the foreground is a pile labeled "Coal 5 Cents a Ton" but filling the background left to right are three massive oil storage containers marked "Standard Oil Co." with a sign poking out reading "For Sale Cheap to Right Party" next to this a building with smokestacks and a sign reading "Power Plant for Sale" next to this a huge structure and a sign reading "Gas Plant for Sale or Rent Will Subdivide to Suit Tenant" and lastly several enormous metal tubes and a sign reading "Bargains in Old Boilers." Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. Presumably McCutcheon is commenting on depressed prices of various fuel sources at this time and the continued availability of coal unknown

Known in the German-speaking world as "Ernst von Osterreich" this son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Maria of Spain was educated with his brother Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II; in 1573 and 1587 he was a candidate for the throne of Poland; from 1576 on he served as governor of the Archduchy of Austria in 1590 he was named governor of Inner Austria; from 1594 until his death he served as governor of Spanish Netherlands. ALS in Italian 1p lettersheet 7½" X 12" Vienna Austria 1579 March 26. Very good. Slight bit of age toning and quite minor foxing; inconspicuous small paper loss at left margin ¼" X 2¼" bears old but expert replacement. Overall attractive boldly written and easily legible. Writing to his cousin the Duke of Savoy Emmanuel Philibert 1528-80 Duke of Savoy 1553-80 it reads translation: "Sir: Mr. de la Cruz your ambassador gave me a letter from you several days ago and although I wanted to answer it before this I have been kept from it by various things and I hope you will not take offense at my delay. You may be sure that I shall always endeavor to do for you all that I can as I have often told Mr. de la Cruz who has probably so informed you. He has told me of the warmth and good will that you feel for me which I feel certain of and I do not know how to repay you except in kind as you may always find in everything that I can very well do you for. May God keep you as I would wish." Signed simply "Ernesto" with a flourish. Integral address leaf present on which Ernest notes "Al Señor duque de Saboya my primo" with a small deep burgundy wax seal bearing his family crest still present. A choice example of this autograph. Ernest died at the relatively young age of 42 making his autograph material quite scarce. unknown

The Hurricane" 1937 was by far this he-man actor's best-known film; when not dressed in a loincloth playing a poor man's Tarzan in "Ramar of the Jungle" for television 1952-54 he appeared in turbans in films such as "Arabian Nights" and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"; committed suicide. Bold pencilled signature in the center of a vintage World War Two-era "Western Union" telegram form 1p 8½" X 7" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly evenly age toned. Quite attractive printed lined form on which a telegram message would be written out longhand -- signed boldly by Hall presumably for a fan encountered in a Western Union office. Nice example from the height of his fame. Accompanied by a handsome glossy black and white photograph a head-and-shoulders portrait of a middle-aged Hall in military garb in an unidentified film role. Fine. unknown

The queen of American stripteasers brought a new finesse to the burlesque scene starring in the 1936 "Ziegfield Follies" and on Broadway in the 1942 musical "Star and Garter"; in addition to her 1957 memoir "Gypsy" which was turned into a hit musical starring Ethel Merman and a film in 1962 starring Natalie Wood she authored the mysteries "The G-String Murders" 1941 and "Mother Finds a Body" 1942. Ink-and-Wash Drawing
Children's book and periodical illustrator about whom little is known; in April May and June 1889 Hill provided the illustrations for Sarah Orne Jewett's serialized tale "A Bit of Color" for "St. Nicholas" magazine later expanded into the 1890 novel "Betty Leicester: A Story of Girls" and his work appears in many other turn-of-the-century books and periodicals. Superb original ink-and-wash drawing 12" X 9" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Neatly mounted to heavy art board. A nighttime flood scene it shows half-submerged buildings and flotsam with a man in a three-piece suit uncomfortably straddling a tall post and a small boat rowed by a black woman pulling up alongside. On the verso in an unidentified hand presumably an editor's the title "Clarissy Ann and the Flood" is noted the scene identified "Clarissy Ann rescues her landlord" and a caption is given "'I kin help you if you agree to a few things' said Clarissy.". This same hand also indicates "St. Nic." -- a reference to "St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks" edited by Mary Mapes Dodge published 1873-1939. This was one of two illustrations for this short story pp. 688-91 which ran in the Volume 23 Part II in 1896. L.E. Chittenden 1824-1900 author and banker and politician best known as Register of the U.S. Treasury in the Lincoln administration authored the story. From the noted autograph collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. A striking piece of original illustration art. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item along with a modern copy of this short story. unknown

Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Original signed ink drawing 14½" X 18½" n.p. 1930. Very good. Slight edgewear and minor soiling. Labeled "The Inquiring Reporter. He asks the question 'Do you think the London Naval Treaty insures parity in American and British naval strength'" in cursive by McCutcheon on the lower margin. This text-heavy six-panel piece depicts the inquiring reporter notepad in hand listening to six persons all male of course some of them obviously in Chicago surroundings respond to this question. Upper left panel: dapper gent in old-time golf duds gold buddies behind him replies "No not so long as the British fleet has the Rodney and the Nelson." Upper right panel: Fellow in small boat on the Chicago River answers "Not so long as Britain has a great preponderance of fast merchant ships capable of being quickly converted into 6 inch auxiliary cruisers and commerce destroyers." Middle left panel: Stodgy executive-type seated behind impressive desk and bookcases offers: "No but we may in 1938 -- if the U.S. builds up to the limit allowed by the treaty -- and if Britain waits till we catch up." Middle right panel: Pudgy wader in old-time swimsuit on crowded Chicago beach front observes "We get parity in submarines destroyers and aircraft carriers -- and possibly in 8 inch cruisers six years from now -- inferiority in capital ships and 6 inch cruisers." Lower left panel: Driver stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic some things in Chicago never change opines "Possibly in American waters eventually but not on our distant trade routes." Lower right panel: Pedestrian clinging to Chicago River street bridge as it rises up shouts to reporter clinging to other side "Not so long as we are hopelessly inferior in naval bases." Unlike contemporary editorial cartoons which would never get away with so much text earlier editorial cartoons such as this prime example often took more than a few seconds to grasp and assumed a firm understanding of detailed political topics of the day. This Republican politician was the only Kansas governor 1947-50 to also serve in the House of Representatives 1935-47 and the Senate 1950-69. DS 1p irregular 7½" X 17" n.p. Washington DC 1952 February 8. Very good. Evenly age toned throughout with couple of small scotch tape stains. Clipped from the "Congressional Record -- Appendix" of February 18 1952 this is the text of a patriotic speech titled "Lincoln Day Address by Hon. Frank Carlson of Kansas" delivered by Carlson in Brooklyn New York on February 18 1952 and is boldly signed at the top across the title along with "U.S. Senate / Kansas" in black fountain pen. The title introduction and beginning of the opening paragraph began on one page of this publication a piece 2½" X 3½" while the vast bulk of the speech appears on both sides of a single leaf A931 and A932 and several brief closing paragraphs run on another page a piece 2½" X 3"; these two small snippets have been neatly affixed at the start and finish so that the speech is presented as a single if odd shaped sheet with text front and back. Photograph Signed "Eight-Wheeled Compound Express Passenger Locomotive"
Influential British locomotive engineer executive and innovator; as Locomotive Superintendent of the London & North Western Railway Company from 1871 to 1903 his word was law and in the city of Crewe where the L. & N.W.R. operated its "Crewe Works" he was known as "The King of Crewe." Rare signed production photograph most likely a heliotype heavy stock 24" X 16" Crewe England 1891. Very good. Light even age toning except verso where acidic backing has darkened unevenly; several small archivally closed on verso edge tears; very slight waviness at some edges. This piece actually consists of three separate images tipped to the heavy 24" X 16" sheet: Center image 14" X 11½" shows this locomotive in close-up profile left side image 3½" X 11½" shows a frontal view and right side image also 3½" X 11½" shows a rear view. Titled "Eight-Wheeled Compound Express Passenger Locomotive" in large typeface below the center image with "F.W. Webb's System" below that in smaller typeface and two lines of technical statistics at the bottom "High-pressure Cylinders 15 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Low-pressure Cylinder 30 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Driving Wheels 7 ft. 1 in. diam. / Leading Wheels radial. Fixed Wheel base 8 ft. 3 in. Trailing Wheels ½ in. side play.". In the latter part of the 19th century Webb took a leading role in the development of compound locomotives -- those in which the steam operates more than one set of cylinders. The locomotive depicted here is part of the "Greater Britain" class a type of eight-wheeled express engine featuring an extra long combustion chamber and distinguished by their 7 foot 1 inch driving wheel; of these Webb designed ten models. The first of these appeared in 1891 -- and may well be the version depicted in this print. At the lower right corner above the printed text "Crewe Works 1891" Webb signs big and bold. Verso of this print bears an oval inkstamp of the L. & N.W.R. Mechanical Engineer's Office dated 30 September 1893. A superb and significant piece ideal for display. unknown

The greatest of all Federalists the one who organized the Federal Party was a Massachusetts representative famed for his 1796 speech defending Jay's Treaty. Unsigned AN with initialed signature tipped on 1p 7½" X 3½" n.p. n.d. Very good. Odd fragment apparently from a legal agreement concerning a house reading in part: "1st. that you agree in the interpretation I have put on the expression of 'a convenient house' as meaning also convenient outhouses and garden." An initialed signature has been tipped in at the close of this partial document which has been tastefully double matted alongside a lovely 5½" X 8" period steel engraved portrait of Ames and engraved brass plaque and framed in a ½" antiqued silver frame overall dimensions 19" X 12". This U.S. vice-presidential candidate on the anti-Masonic ticket 1832 with William Wirt for president was a Pennsylvania legislator jurist and attorney general. Brief ALS 1p 8¼" X 13" Harrisburg PA 1817 August 1. Addressed to George Bryan auditor general. Good plus. Rather edgeworn with several edge chips; some archival repairs along right edge. Intriguingly cryptic legal matter written while state attorney general reading: "In the case submitted in your letter of yesterday my first impressions were the same as yours. But upon the reflection & examination of the law I adapt the of Judge Burnside. I could add another reason to those mentioned by the Judge -- one drawn from the word & spirit of the law -- but unless it be desired by the accounting officers I will not enter into a discussion at large of the question." Thomas Burnside 1782-1851 was a Pennsylvania representative and state supreme court associate justice; at the time of this letter he served as president judge of the Luzerne district courts. One of the most recognizable Hollywood visages and voices ever the squeaky-voiced character appeared in an astonishing 300-plus films and is perhaps best remembered as Roy Rogers' comic sidekick. "Best regards / to Donald Burnell / Andy Divine" boldly pencilled on a 3½" X 2½" slip n.p. n.y. ca. 1953. Good plus. Irregularly age toned with couple of small scotch tape stains. By way of illustration accompanied by a superb 3½" X 5½" picture postcard showing Devine and Guy Madison in buckskin outfits guns drawn in their roles as "Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles" their popular Western series from 1951-58 with facsimile signatures of each below their images. Postally cancelled in Los Angeles on 4 May 1953 and addressed to Donald Burnell recipient of the above inscription from Devine. A fun pair. unknown

This representative from Michigan's 12th district 1934-42 and 1944-46 holds the distinction of being that district's only Democrat ever the district no longer exists; as a "New Deal" supporter he was instrumental in bringing about Social Security and minimum wage legislation. Signed printed speech 1p recto and verso 7½" X 11" n.p. Washington DC 1937. Titled "Sugar Legislation: Extension of Remarks of Hon. George G. Sadowski of Michigan in the House of Representatives Monday August 2 1937 -- Radio Address by Hon. Frank E. Hook of Michigan on July 29 1937" this consists of a single leaf pages 10401-10402 of the "Congressional Record -- Appendix." Sadowski introduces Hook's NBC radio speech concerning legislation to reform the sugar industry. Hook signs huge and handsome in brown fountain pen diagonally across the first page of this two-page text. Unusual in this form. unknown

This Ohio democratic politician served that state as congressman 1918-21 and as their 53rd governor 1935-39. TMS 4pp onion skin sheets 8½" X 13 3/4" n.p. 1935 March 9. Very good. Small paper clip rust mark at upper left of first page. Original single-spaced typescript of the Ohio governor's irate speech titled "Radio Speech of Martin L. Davey Governor March 9th 1935" on the Federal Emergency Relief Administration programs within Ohio and his inability to exert any control over it. In part: "Many of you will recall that I made an issue of this relief situation in the campaign last year. I made a solemn promise to the people of Ohio to correct the abuses and to eliminate the waste and inefficiency. / .neither myself as Governor nor any agent of the State of Ohio has the slightest possibility of correcting any of the evils and waste and inefficiency that give rise to such wide-spread complaints. I am wholly unable to keep an earnest campaign promise to clean up this situation. / It is not my purpose to evade responsibility. I was perfectly willing to take all the blame that goes with executive power but when there is not the slightest power lodged in the Governor to correct the abuse and waste I am not willing to assume public responsibility for what is going on." A lengthy denunciation of the way in which New Deal programs were being carried out on the state level. Interestingly Davey's pre-gubernatorial business the Davey Tree Expert Company was one of the earliest to sponsor network radio programs -- thus Davey was well versed in the power of radio waves to influence constituents. Within weeks of taking office Davey -- whose tenure has been described as "one of the most extraordinary and bizarre periods in the annals of the Ohio governorship" -- began feuding with President Roosevelt. He accused the federal administration of relief in Ohio with being "cruel inhuman and wasteful" -- to which FDR accused Davey with corrupting relief efforts in Ohio. Roosevelt quoted federal relief administrator Harry L. Hopkins who maintained that Davey's campaign committee had solicited contributions to finance his inaugural ball from persons working with the Federal Relief Administration. Davey sought to have Hopkins arrested for criminal libel. Before the Ohio legislature Davey called Hopkins a coward and a liar and dared him to enter Ohio. This typescript clearly precedes this name-calling brouhaha for in it Davey discusses Hopkins and his agency in civil if not cordial terms. Chronologically this speech likely falls some time shortly after the beginning of the Davey-FDR feud and the FDR countercharges. Boldly signed by Davey at the conclusion. Fascinating and most unusual -- an important relic from this memorable Ohio political squabble. unknown
