Bound Down for Newfoundland: The Log of a Young Seaman on Board the Matthew
To commemorate the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's 1497 voyage, a full-size replica of the Matthew was reconstructed at Bristol by the naval architect Colin Mudie and the boat-building company Storms'l Services ... Shipwrights began work in February 1994 and it took them two years to complete the $3.8-million project. In 1997, the replica Matthew sailed across the Atlantic as part of the quincentenial celebrations. After 54 days at sea, it arrived at Bonavista on 24 June 1997, where it was welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II and 30,000 spectators. This book is the personal log of the voyage from Bristol to Boianventure from one of the crew (a native Newfoundlander) with his inscription on the title page. La première à été publiée en 1881. Cette brochure reproduit les lettres qu'Abadie a envoyé à ses amis algériens à propos du trans-saharien. Plus qu'un simple échange, l'auteur développe à travers celles-ci un véritable plaidoyer en faveur du projet de réalisation de la ligne de chemin de fer reliant les colonies françaises d'Afrique. Aussi, il envoie la brochure contenant son argumentation aux sénateurs et députés français chargés d'étudier le projet afin qu'ils prennent en considération son argumentation pour la décision finale. Il faudra néanmoins attendre la Seconde Guerre Mondiale pour que la voie ferrée soit en partie construite avant d'être abandonnée définitivement en 1949. Hinter Glas in zeitgenössischem, stark profilierten schwarzen Holzrahmen mit geschnitztem Rankendekor. 60:75 cm. Erwin Osen "war mit dem Maler Egon Schiele befreundet, dem er im Jahre 1912 nach dessen Gefängnishaft sein Atelier in Wien 9, Höfergasse 18 vermietete und welcher ihn wiederholt porträtierte" (Fuchs, II, K32). Auch stilistisch stand Osen am Beginn seines Schaffes Schiele sehr nahe, was wohl mit eine Erklärung für die hohen Preise darstellt, die Osens Frühwerke auf internationalen Auktionen erzielen (zuletzt 101.575 USD für das Aquarell 'Die grüngekleidete Frau' [Sotheby's New York, 6. XI. 2002, lot 206]). 1960 übersiedelte Osen nach Dortmund, wo er am 23. XI. 1970 verstarb. Berühmt sind Schieles Portrait- und Aktbilder des exzentrischen Freundes (u. a. Kallir, D.601 - Farbtafel 21); als bildender Künstler trat der Pantomime, Sänger und Tänzer Osen 1909 als Mitbegründer der Wiener Neukunstgruppe hervor. - Eine Verbindung zwischen Klaus Kinski und dem späteren Theatermaler war bisher nicht bekannt gewesen; ob Osen mit Kinski noch vor 1960 in dessen Wiener Jahren zusammentraf oder das vorliegende Portrait erst bei einer späteren Gelegenheit enstanden ist, muß vorläufig offen bleiben.

Geschichte an der Universität Wien ernannt, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1937 wirkte und 1920/21 als Rektor amtierte. Dopsch war 1922 Gründer und Direktor des Seminars für Wirtschafts- und Kulturgeschichte an der Wiener Universität." 9 Bll., zumeist mit hübschem Blattschmuck in goldgehöhter (Chromo-)Lithographie sowie farbiger Kalligraphie, mit über 450 Unterschriften. Dem soeben als stellvertretender Generaldirektor in die österreichischen Staatsbahnen eingetretenen Bresson zum Neujahrsfest 1863 gewidmet von seinen Beamten. Die einzelnen, teils prächtig ankolorierten, goldgehöhten und kalligraphierten Schmuckblätter sind jeweils von einer Direktionsabteilung oder Sektion dediziert (Baudirektion, Domänen-Direktion, Buchhaltung, Werkstätten etc.). - Der französische Ingenieur Louis-Léopold Bresson hatte zuvor an der Errichtung der russischen Staatsbahn mitgewirkt und war dann zur (seit Mitte der 1850er Jahre immer stärker unter die Hoheit französischer Investoren, aber auch fähiger Pariser Ingenieure geratene) österreichischen Staatseisenbahngesellschaft gewechselt, wo er von 1863 bis 1877 als Generaldirektor wirkte. - Kleine Randläsuren; teils leicht angestaubt.

Ergänzungsnetz "die damals höchste Anerkennung fanden" (ebd. IX, 330). Ganzfigürliche Portraits en face. - Aus dem Atelier André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéris (1819-89). - Disdéri hatte 1854 sein sogenanntes Carte-de-visite-Verfahren patentieren lassen, eine Technik, bei der Mithilfe einer mehrlinsigen Kamera auf Kollodium-Negativmaterial eine Serie von acht Portraitbildern festgehalten werden konnte. Bald schon war ihm damit Erfolg beschieden, und seine Methode verdrängte alle älteren Verfahren der kommerziellen Portraitfotographie.
