McPHATTER, Clyde (1933-72)
Autograph Quotation Signed / Inscribed Photograph Signed
This legendary R & B tenor hit the charts in the mid-50s with the Drifters and such hits as "Money Honey" "Such a Night" and "Honey Love" before going solo. Two items: First an AQS 1p irregularly-trimmed roughly rectangular 8" X 4½" n.p. n.d. January 1958. Very good. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and two more small tape stains along right edge touching slightly upon a couple of words. Curious free verse poem or song lyrics -- whether to one of McPhatter's published songs is uncertain. "I want to walk in the shadow of your arms" it begins. "I want to live by the touch of your lips. I want to be in the River with you while the sea's calm I want to live and love I don't want to miss. I want to live with a love that's divine I want to be with you and give you all my love. I want to say that you are mine. I want to ask faith from the one above." Boldly signed at the conclusion. An unheard-of McPhatter rarity quite intriguing and exceedingly scarce -- and worthy of further research. Second an IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.d. Very good. Faint yellow tape stain at each corner. Classy handsome half-length glossy portrait of a young smiling McPhatter in suit and tie inscribed large and bold in thick black marker at the upper right "To / 'Donald' / ALL the best / ALL the time! / Clyde McPhatter." Very choice and very scarce. McPhatter who suffered from alcoholism died of a heart attack at age 39 making his autograph material quite uncommon. unknown

Lovely sepia-tone full-length pose showing Van Gordon as Brunnhilde in "Die Walkure" complete with stereotypical female Viking garb including metal Brassiere helmet shield and spear. Boldly inscrtibed and signed in a dark portion at lower right decent contrast only"For John Leiser / with my best wishes / Cyrena Van Gordon." Leiser was a noted Chicago pianist and music educator. unknown

In part: "Your letter followed me all the way to California. I accept with great pleasure your charming invitation. I play April 18 in Omaha Nebraska and I don't know yet when I will get to Appleton. Probably the 20th day of the concert." With original matching envelope addressed in Casadesus's hand. A superb vintage example. unknown

TNS 1p 8¼" X 11" Berkeley Springs WV 1924 November 21. Addressed to George H. Lorimer 1867-1937 the influential "Saturday Evening Post" editor. Very good. Mounting traces on verso. Asks Lorimer's help in tracking down a friend's address concluding with "I am making good progress with the autobiography." Quick died less than six months later and this autobiography was never published. unknown

Though little is known about this American writer he had a following as a horror and sci-fi writer of such short stories as "The Caller in the Night" 1917 and other oft-anthologized ghost tales; his "In the Open Code" appeared in "The Best Short Stories of 1918" and he also published novels such as "The End of the Flight" 1917 and "Gallant Rogue" 1921. Two items: First a TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1923 March 2. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I feel truly honored by your wish to include something of mine in your collection of autographs and manuscripts" he begins. "If the scribble I am sending you is not to your taste you must let me know. My book manuscripts are the property of the publishers and magazine editors never save or return the 'copy' of stories; hence this scrap from an unfinished yarn is the only thing at hand." Second is the accompanying "scrap" -- labeled "Rough draft" in red pencil at the upper left in Kline's hand -- which is titled "Sunk Without a Trace" and is an AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. It consists of one very full page of bold and legible text beginning: "On the 15th of every March I regularly receive a line from my friend Dr. Carver. Regularly his letter commands me to dine with him at the ___ Club on the 21st of the month. This annual feast has become a fixture between us. The dinner is not to herald the technical and sometimes the actual arrival of Spring. It is to celebrate it may be the fourth the sixth -- this year it was the seventh -- anniversary of Dr. Carver's divorce." Could become a horror tale -- but in any case it's an attractive and interesting rough draft example that makes you want to read more. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

This prolific novelist's Westerns are highly praised for their authenticity; his first book was "The Range Riders" short stories 1911 and first novel was "The Two Gun Man" 1911 and dozens followed; many ended up on the silent screen with screenplays penned by Seltzer. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. ca. 1923. Near fine. Double spaced large margined typescript of page 14 of a manuscript titled "Sunset." Seltzer signs large and bold in black ink across the lower margin and in the large left margin adds "Page from / Latest work / entitled 'Sunset." In the right margin Seltzer has penned a few small ink text corrections. Fine example of a working page from what appears to be a fairly finished draft. Either this novel was never published or it was published under a different title for no Selzter novel titled "Sunset" was ever published. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. This Chicago journalist became the syndicated "Penny Prudence" in 1925 for the "Chicago Herald and Examiner" discussing cooking and homemaking issues; she wrote cookbooks such as "Meatless Meals" "Penny Prudence's Cookbook" "52 Victory Meals" and more under this nom de plume and in 1941 a one-reel film titled "Penny to the Rescue" appeared in theaters whether this featured Malek herself or an actress we haven't determined. TLS 1p 7" X 10½" Chicago IL 1929 September 9. Addressed to Mary Day librarian Museum of Science and Industry. Very good. Upper left corner torn off slightly affecting printed letterhead. On letterhead of the "Illinois Woman's Press Association" which lists Malek as that organization's president Malek asks for assistance on an IWPA matter from another member. In part: "Will you please send out these letters Suppose you have a new list Miss Knight will help about envelopes so please see that she has all names. Our room is 633 Fine Arts Bldg. This Unitarian minister about whom little is known was an intimate of Emerson having served as best man at his wedding and friend of Thoreau and the Transcendentalists and for a time in the 1840s lived at their famed utopian community Brook Farm; one scholar describes him as "teacher thinker and friend of literary men." AQS 1p 10½" X 6 3/4" n.p. 1872 June 9. Very good. Very mild age toning and a few light spots of foxing. Handsomely penned in brown signed and dated at the close this unattributed stanza reads in full: "If once we knew his fertile gift could lend / With worthy verses I this page might fill / But since alas! no muse will me befriend / Instead of deed kindly accept the will." On heavy stock paper presumably from an autograph album. Most unusual and quite attractive. unknown

Cryptic legal matter: "Browner has written me to file a bill against Burch -- you kindly offered to do it for me & I will be much obliged if you will do so immediately." Signed simply "Toombs." Partly-printed DS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1940 June 24. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "New York Public Library" letterhead this form letter partly typed in acknowledges and thanks a book gift to the library -- in this case Gates' privately published booklet "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge." Lydenberg's miniscule signature could easily be mistaken for printed but is actually authentic and original. unknown

Gilbert was a popular Midwest wrestling champion of the '50s and '60s holder of many titles half of a celebrated tag team with Billy Goelz. Christy was another popular wrestling draw in the '50s. PS 5" X 3½" n.p. Chicago IL n.y. July 1960. Very good. Minor yellowish tape stain at each corner not terribly disfiguring and well away from signatures. Original black-and-white snapshot likely one of a kind showing what appears to be an arena dressing room probably Chicago's Amphitheatre with Gilbert and a smiling Christy looking a tad s-faced walking through a doorway Gilbert apparently supporting Christy who has his left arm about Gilbert's shoulders. At upper right in red fineline marker Gilbert inscribes it "Who's drunk / Johnny Gilbert." Beneath this also in red fineline Christy adds "or / Bill / Christy." A unique image of two stars hamming it up for a fan from the Golden Age of Wrestling. unknown

LEAR, Benjamin Lincoln (1791-1832)

The only child of George Washington's long-time personal secretary Tobias Lear was actually born in the early "White House" in Philadelphia and Washington was his godfather; his mother died when he was two Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were among her pallbearers and he went on to become a successful attorney in Washington DC; Gilbert Stuart painted a well-known portrait of him. Outstanding AMS 2pp recto and verso 7 3/4" X 12 3/4" Portsmouth NH 1817 August 20. Very good. Three light horizontal original folds; mild age toning and slight edgewear. This attractively and boldly penned document is titled "Christmas Hymn" and contains the full text of a Christmas song whose original we have not been able to determine. Begins "Hail holy morn upon whose beams / A thousand radiant Seraphs rode / Bright from the Sapphire throne of God. / Bursting upon the Shepherd's dreams.- / While poised upon the glittering wing / A thousand choral voices sing / Glad tidings of great joy we bring / Be peace proclaimed on Earth / And Heaven's high arch with rapture ring." Goes on for several more stanzas closing with: "Thus for the gift that thou hast given / Hereafter we shall learn to rain / On days of everlasting Praise / Tun'd to the Gold en Harps of Heaven." He then concludes "Written from recollection for my Dear Cousin Miss Mary Storer" boldly dated and signed. Storer was the given name of Lear's mother Mary "Polly" Lear the first of Tobias Lear's three wives who was related to the Washington family. There were a great many prominent Storers in early Portsmouth history among them a Mary Storer born around 1785 who might well have been the recipient of this keepsake. Whether Lear's "recollection" of this hymn refers to him recalling a hymn he himself had written years before or to a hymn written by another is not clear and certainly warrants further research. This American violinist and conductor led Chicago's Spiering Quartette founded the Spiering Violin School and directed the Chicago Musical College; in 1911 he was appointed concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Society under Gustav Mahler whom he briefly replaced. AMuQS heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card Chicago May 1900. Very good. Mild age toning; faint mounting trace at each corner. Spiering apparently was asked by an admirer for a snippet from an original composition for at the center of this heavy card he has affixed a 3" X 1½" slip bearing two small neatly penned measures from a composition identified as "Scherzo Op. 2" above with place and date penned just below. Below this slip Spiering signs large and bold. Very unusual. unknown

This book was published privately by myself and I still have the latest edition. Two items: First an ALS 1p 5½" X 8½" New Haven CT 1923 January 16. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Fine. "I enclose a first-draft sheet from the novel I am at present at work on" he writes. "As you see it is chaos. But you see the explanation is this -- I have my type-writer before me and a sheaf of paper beside it. On the paper I scribble & fiddle around in long-hand until I get a paragraph or a few sentences composed; then I copy these on the typewriter but usually making many additional changes as I do so. -- This merely to explain the extraordinary appearance of the sheet." Second is the aforementioned "first-draft sheet" an AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. 1923 January 15. Near fine. Several meaty paragraphs penned in black ink in Dodd's miniscule but legible hand with a few crossouts some added text etc. At lower right he boldly inscribes it "Presented to / Prof. Albert Johannsen / by / Lee Wilson Dodd / Jan. 15 - 1923." A fun pair: an explanation by the author of his work method and an actual example of it. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Bowker Company which still exists in 1872 co-founded "Library Journal" which also still exists in 1876 and acquired "Publishers' Weekly" you guessed it in 1879 -- among other lasting bookish and bibliographic endeavors. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1923 January 17. Addressed to "R.U.J." editor Robert Underwood Johnson 1853-1937. Flowery tribute to his friend on the occasion of Johnson's seventieth birthday. In part: "Certainly your 70 years have been crowded and crowned with honors as Secretary of the American Copyright League whose work will I hope be crowned by our entrance into the International Copyright Union before we pass over to the majority; as Editor of the Century; as Scribe of the Immortals himself immortalized in contiguity; and finally as Ambassador from his beloved country to the land of his love." This last refers to Johnson's 1920-21 term as U.S. ambassador to Italy. An unusual item from one giant in the world of editing to another. unknown
