‎Autograph Manuscript Signed‎

‎Prolific American author all under the pseudonym "Holworthy Hall" of popular tales such as "Henry of Navarre Ohio" 1914 "Paprika" 1916 "Pepper" 1916 "Dormie One and Other Golf Stories" 1917 "Egan" 1920 "Rope" 1922 "Colossus" 1930 and others. AMS 1p 8½" X 11" Paris France 1923 n.d. Near fine. Slightest bit of age toning. Page from an actual working draft on a sheet of lined notebook paper headed in Porter's incredibly miniscule but handsome script "The Seller of Dreams / By / Holworthy Hall." Twenty-five handwritten lines of this tale follow. Porter has then in pencil inserted words here and there sometimes entire lines and crossed out a number of the inked lines. In the upper right corner Porter then inscribes it "For Professor Johannsen / with the regards of / Harold E. Porter / 'Holworthy Hall' / Paris 1923." Whether this tale ever made it into print we have not been able to verify -- perhaps it did but under another title or perhaps it was a short story. When we say Porter had an incredibly miniscule script we're not kidding: his letters measure 1/16th" in height! Nevertheless -- with the aid of a magnifying glass -- it's an attractive easily legible script. Johannsen authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. His original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown‎

‎(GALENA, Illinois) McDANIEL, Mary (?-?)‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎Early resident of this important Illinois lead-mining town which for a time produced a high percentage of the world's lead "Galena" is Latin for lead and was supposed to become the great hub of the Midwest before Chicago's natural geographic advantage supplanted it; today's Galena is remembered as the adopted hometown of Ulysses S. Grant. ALS 2pp single leaf 5" X 8" Galena IL 1857 January 1. Addressed to Miss Marcia Floyd of Courville Maine. Writing on pale pink lined stationery McDaniel pens her friend this chatty missive. She describes Illinois: "Well it is a large and fertile state abounding in vast prairies the principle production is wheat maize etc. There are numerous salt springs." Of Galena she notes: "The inhabitants in the vicinity are chiefly farmers and are intelligent and enterprising. Most of them live in log houses. I am attending school at present and like it here very much." Oddly she signs off "Peter Fling / Mary McDaniel." The significance of this pseudonym we have not been able to ascertain -- perhaps "Peter Fling" was a character in popular young women's literature of the day. Even more odd is the original envelope which is present. A typical small 4 3/4" X 2½" in addition to addressing it McDaniel draws a three-cent stamp in the upper right corner and draws a circular "Galena Ill Jan. 1" postal cancellation in the upper left corner! The 1850s was the early days of actual government-issue postage stamps of course but this humorous version surely was contained within another larger second envelope. No "McDaniels" appear in the Galena city directories of this period though with a large and somewhat transient population in a rural area this isn't terribly meaningful. This superb and evocative letter has been handsomely framed the letter in one mat opening and the envelope in another above it double matted in tan and dark brown and framed in a 1¼" burlwood frame overall dimensions 10¼" X 18". It's double sided as well so may be flipped over to read the letter's second page where an attractive typescript of the entire letter is also displayed in a mat opening. Very early and very unusual. unknown‎

‎CLEMENS, Cyril (1902-99)‎

‎Partly-Printed Autograph Document Signed‎

‎This self-styled "nephew" of Mark Twain was actually his third cousin twice removed but nevertheless made a career of editing and publishing sentimental scholarly questionable works about Samuel Clemens such as "Gold Rush Days with Mark Twain" 1930 "Mark Twain and Mussolini" 1934 "My Cousin Mark Twain" 1939 and "Young Sam Clemens" 1942 along with editing the "Mark Twain Quarterly" upon its establishment in 1936 and founding the International Mark Twain Society. Partly-Printed ADS 1p 6¼" X 2 3/4" Kirkwood Missouri 1967 January 15. Check drawn on the First Security Bank in Kirkwood on pale blue stock filled out and signed entirely in Clemens' large bold hand in black fineline made out to John Dos Passos in the amount of five dollars. Usual red inkstamped cancellation. Near fine. DOS PASSOS 1896-1970 was the prolific American novelist best known for his "U.S.A." trilogy. He boldly endorses the check on the verso in blue ballpoint. An interesting pairing of literary figures. unknown‎

‎RIVINGTON, James (1724-1802)‎

‎Autograph Document Signed / Unsigned Portrait‎

‎This English-born American bookseller and publisher was controversial during the American Revolution for his suspected Tory sympathies especially since he published the "New York Gazetteer" even returning to England briefly early during the war; but it's believed he was actually a spy for the Americans and smuggled messages to General Washington printed on thin paper bound into the covers of books. ADS 2pp separate leaves 7 3/4" X 6" and 7 3/4" X 7½" New York NY 1789 September 10-11. Very good. Mild bit of age toning slight bit of soiling. First leaf in Rivington's hand records a real estate transaction verbatim with line breaks included: "James Rivington & wife / to / Benj: Moore / deed & Release Sept: 10 & 11 1789. / Recd. -- Lib:45. p529 -- & Lib:46. p221. -- / 16 ac. 2 roads & 32 paas.-- Between Green- / -wich Road & the River -- South of / Mary Clarke's land. --" The second leaf in another and neater hand notes: "Abstract of Title to two Lots of Ground on the North-Easterly side of Twenty first Street in the 12th Ward of the City of New York distinguished on the plot beneath by the numbers 1 & 2." Below this is a well-drafted plat map showing land parcels between "9th Av." at left "8th Ave." at right "22d St" at top and "21. St." at bottom -- with the two lots in question here neatly marked "1" and "2" in the lower right area of this block. The purchaser here was Bishop BENJAMIN MOORE 1748-1816 the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and president of Columbia College -- best remembered as the father of Clement C. Moore 1779-1863 the scholar who penned the immortal poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1823. Bishop Moore and his son owned a number of properties in this area mostly in the Chelsea Historic District slightly north of the two lots he purchased from Rivington. A scarce document with interesting connections. Accompanied by a superb and itself scarce vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 7" X 10½" n.p. n.y. mid-19th century. Fine. A bold and handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of Rivington gazing intently at the viewer looking rather like Washington himself engraved by A.H. Ritchie. unknown‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎This Philadelphian resigned his commission as lieutenant with the British army at the outbreak of the American Revolution to join the Pennsylvania militia rising through the ranks to brigadier general and serving as aide to Major General Benjamin Lincoln; in the "Whiskey Rebellion" he commanded a volunteer battalion nicknamed "MacPherson's Blues" which served under Washington's command and proved invaluable earning high commendations from Washington and Lafayette; his brother Captain John MacPherson was the first Philadelphian of note killed in the Revolutionary War. ANS 1p 6" X 3½" Stanton 1812 June 13. Addressed to W. Wager. Very good. Not faded but penned in a rather thin light ink easily readable. "Please to let the Bearer have a Gallon of your best old Brandy." An attractive example and rather uncommon. Pencilled notes on verso also include the interesting aside that this document was "Presented by Herr Simon Gratz April 20/79." Simon Gratz 1838-1925 was a noted Philadelphia attorney and philanthropist -- but more importantly was an important autograph collector author of such popular works as "A Book About Autographs" 1920. unknown‎

ALS 1p 8½" X 11" New Rochelle NY 1958 January 2. Addressed to Donald. Very good. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and one 1¼" at each side. On delightfully corny letterhead of "Clyde McPhatter's Tune Shop" this rare letter was written shortly after his split from the Drifters and the height of his fame as a soloist. A gracious letter to an admirer reading in part: "Hope that you will like the little verse that I am sending you. Very sorry that I don't have any pictures at this time hope when you write again I'll have some on hand. So until then be good." Bold full signature. McPhatter who suffered from alcoholism died of a heart attack at age 39 making his autograph material quite uncommon. unknown‎
