‎RODEN Carl B. 1870 1956‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎This influential and powerful librarian served the Chicago Public Library for 64 years starting 1886 as a page boy and ending after 32 years as chief librarian in 1950. Great content TLS 1p 8" X 11" Chicago IL 1932 March 4. Addressed "To the Members of the A.L.A. Committee on Chicago Centennial Exposition." Very good. On "Chicago Public Library" letterhead Roden sends this meaty letter regarding the CPL getting a booth at the famous Century of Progress Exposition. In part: "Space for commercial exhibits at the Exposition is quoted at $10. per square foot. At this rate the 3000 feet we are asking for would cost $30000. There seems however to be some chance that space for the Library Exhibit may be set aside without cost. Whether or not this proposition will be accepted remains to be seen. If not then what is our next move I estimate that a creditable exhibit would cost anywhere from $5000 to $15000 depending on how much of the equipment furniture books &c. might be arranged for as loans." He asks that a person be hired for this job as "it is both too important and too large a task for a Committee." Boldly signed in blue ink. Accompanied by a fine heavy stock 5" X 8" four-page program and menu "In Honor of / Carl B. Roden / Dinner / Tendered by the Citizens of Chicago" at Chicago's Palmer House. Inner pages show the menu on the left side and the program on the right including a speech by University of Chicago president Robert M. Hutchins. Very good. unknown‎

‎MANN Margaret 1873 1960‎

‎Typed Note Signed‎

‎In the buttoned-down world of library science and cataloguing this librarian and educator was a rock star whose revolutionary methods and textbooks ruled that world for half a century; her "Rain Man"-like ability to categorize and classify massive quantities of material transformed and modernized the antiquated field of library science and she retired from the University of Michigan lauded as an innovator -- in 1999 "American Libraries" hailed her as one of the "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century." TNS 1p 8" X 7" Ann Arbor MI 1931 December 22. Addressed to Mary B. Day of the Chicago Public Library. Near fine. Light original folds. Gracious note on "University of Michigan / Department of Library Science" letterhead sending "my check for three dollars which I take pleasure in sending you as a contribution to the fund you are collecting for Miss Ahern. I sincerely hope that you will be successful in this undertaking and it is a pleasure for me to have a part in doing this splendid thing for Miss Ahern." Bold signed in full. "Miss Ahern" was Mary Eileen Ahern 1860-1938 another of "American Libraries" "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century" an inventive leader in the modern library movement as influential as Mann; in 1931 she gave up her 36-year-long editorship of "Libraries" magazine due to failing eyesight and Day undertook some fundraising to aid the aging librarian. A fine letter from one pioneering librarian to another librarian regarding another pioneering librarian. unknown‎

‎KEILY Daniel J. 1829 67‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎This Union officer served on the staff of Brigadier General James Shields whose troops faced Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley in June 1862 and later commanded the Second Louisiana Regiment Cavalry; he was a good friend of famed Irish soldier Miles W. Keogh 1840-76 killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn who served under him in the Papal Army during the Italian rebellion in 1860 and who fought with him in the Battle of Port Republic; he's reported to have become enamored with famed Southern spy "Belle" Boyd" at one point and to have unwittingly revealed military secrets to her. Outstanding pencilled ANS 2pp recto and verso heavy stock 4" X 2" card "Conrad's Bridge" Virginia n.d. ca. early June 1862. Addressed to "General" probably James Shields. Very good. Lightly age toned. In this remarkable small report Keily reports in a small tight but fairly legible hand to his commander that "Col. Carroll moves his comm'd. at p.m. and will push on as rapidly as possible some cannonading heard this morning in the direction of Harrisonburg I would respectfully submit that if the Infantry did not move rapidly enough to carry out your views at Wainesborough before Jacksons arrival there a reconnaisance composed of cavalry conducted cautiously might attain the object with a good Guide which we have procured I would be glad to undertake it -- respectfully" and signs off adding his rank "Capt. A.D.C" beneath. A rather light challenging to transcribe postscript reads "P.S. Just received information from a reliable source that Jackson has --- --- --- Train on the --- Pt. Republic Road." It's difficult to precisely date Keily's note but General Shields did write General McDowell on June 4 1862 that "Colonel Carroll. after a forced night's march reached Conrad's Bridge this morning at 5 o'clock which bridge he found burned" -- which likely dates Keily's letter from this date or shortly after. Whether Shields took Keily up on his offer to lead a cavalry reconnaissance is unclear. Shields 1810-79 is perhaps best remembered as the Illinois politician who almost fought a duel with Abraham Lincoln in 1842; he's also the only person in American history to serve as U.S. senator from three different states Illinois Minnesota and Missouri; as a brigadier general of volunteers in the Civil War his lackluster performance as commander of the 2nd Division of the V Corps in the Army of the Potomac during the crucial Valley Campaign caused him to resign his commission. On June 9th the Battle of Port Republic took place a costly Confederate victory in which Jackson's 6000 troops faced off 3500 Union troops losing just over 800 men to the Union's loss of just over 1000 men -- a battle at which Keily himself was severely wounded in the face while leading a charge of Ohio cavalry up a hill into a barrage of Confederate artillery fire. The following year after painful recuperation Keily ended up on the staff of General Charles P. Stone in New Orleans recruiting cavalry troops in that occupied state. Late in the war he was court-martialed for "conduct unbecoming an officer" but the charges were shown false and by the end of the war he was brevetted a brigadier general. Keily died from yellow fever in Louisiana at age 38 shortly after the war's end making his autograph material quite scarce -- and a choice war-date item such as this most desirable. This remarkable war-date communication sheds interesting light on Shields as commander during the disastrous Valley Campaign. unknown‎

‎HATCH Rufus 1832 93‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This entrepreneur first became a successful Chicago grain broker before becoming one of the founding members of the Chicago Board of Trade but his Wall Street speculations made him a wealthy man in New York where his plentiful and good-humored letters published in newspapers across the country earned him wider fame and the moniker "Uncle Rufus." ALS 4pp 4" X 7" New York NY 1873 September 24. Addressed "To his Excellency / The President of the U.S." Ulysses S. Grant. Fair only. Though fairly legible for the most part the letter is heavily age toned and worn spotted and soiled. Despite rough condition this letter is an outstanding example of the bold and popular style of "Uncle Rufus" and was penned just a few days after the stock market crash of September 18 caused by excessive speculation in Northern railroad construction that followed the Civil War -- a trend of which Hatch was a leading proponent. This "Panic of 1873" hit Hatch himself hard; his reputed $1 million worth dropped by nearly 75% though he supposedly made good on his $600000 indebtedness. This panic marked the start of the "Long Depression" -- two decades of a weak uncertain economy. Hatch here advises the president -- who he knew personally having taken him members of his cabinet and 300 other guests on a 2-day round-trip New York/Newport cruise aboard the new steamer owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company which Hatch served as director not long before -- what to do in this new crisis: "I beg leave respectfully to submit the following proposition for the financial relief of the country. 1st In order to prevent inflation 2ndly To prevent any advance on the Gold prime and 3rdly To prevent any disturbance in Exchanges between the United States and Europe and 4thly That our exports may continue. Deposit $10000000 Gold & $10000000 Greenbacks in New York banks. Receive joint clearing house receipts as security. The Security is good. Loan any part of the $44000000 Greenbacks on any government bonds at par on $10000 multiplied. The people have paid 100 on the upon which this proposition in based. When the Government needed $2000000.000 as a military necessity the banks were trusted from $50000000 to $150000000 why not trust them now to the extent of $20000000 to save the country from financial ruin" Signs off "Respectfully" large and bold. President Grant did not take Hatch's advise instead contracting the money supply which caused interest rates to rise and worsened the situation for those such as Hatch who were in debt. A fascinating and scarce piece. unknown‎

‎SWOPE Herbert Bayard 1882 1958‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎This colorful and influential editor and journalist -- brother of General Electric president Gerard Swope -- won a Pulitzer prize for his World War One coverage; he edited the New York World from 1920 to 1929. TLS 12pp rectos only 8" X 10" Washington DC 1918 January 23. Addressed "To the Council New York World" -- though Swope crosses this out in pencil and adds "Dear RP" publisher Ralph Pulitzer eldest son of Joseph Pulitzer and himself a highly influential journalist. Very good. All 12 pages of this lengthy missive have been neatly tipped together along the left margin the whole of which was affixed into one of Swope's personal scrapbooks since removed. Late in 1916 Swope authored several articles collecting titled "Inside the German Empire" which earned him the 1917 Pulitzer Prize for reporting -- which must have impressed President Woodrow Wilson mightily for only months later Swope writes this detailed report to the editorial board of his employer newspaper of which he would soon become editor. Writing "Confidential" in the upper left corner of the first page he opens with an auspicious "The president asked me to come to see him yesterday. I was with him almost an hour. It was most enlightening." The remainder of the report is a detailed frank and flattering look at Wilson and his conduct of World War One. Swope obviously made a carbon copy of this report one to mail and the other to keep. This is his retained copy although the first two leaves are the originals and leaves three through twelve the carbons. He signs this copy in full and boldly at the close and throughout the text are original non-carbon additions deletions and corrections in ink. Two heavy stock scrapbook margins in which Swope describes the content in thick blue pencil are also present each roughly 10" X 3" and provide interesting background. These read: "This was written after I had been in Washington for several months assigned there to ' the administration out of the water' if I thought things were going badly. The World was a strong Wilson paper which would have given extra force to the attack NY in the Boston / Phila. No one were to use my dispatch if critical" adding in regular pencil "Waddell Catchings of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had announced that "we had lost the war." A fascinating letter -- whether it saw light of day in any published form is unknown. Also accompanied by a superb unusual glossy 9" X 7" news agency photograph International News Photo a fine image showing a smiling Swope standing with General Eisenhower and two others. Original mimeographed paper label affixed to verso which dates this scene 9 September 1947 titles it "Swope Decorated for War Services" and describes it: "James F. Byrnes former U.S. Secretary of State indulges in a bit of good-natured ribbing after General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower had presented the Medal for Merit to Herbert Bayard Swope right in a ceremony at the War Department. Looking on are Gen. Eisenhower and Bernard M. Baruch second from right. Mr. Swope was honored for 'exceptionally meritorious conduct in performance of outstanding services in World War II.'" unknown‎

‎OPERATION GREYLORD. HOLZER Reginald J. 1928 92‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎This huge corruption investigation of the 1980s involved the FBI IRS USPS Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and resulted in a large number of indictments and convictions of judges lawyers sheriffs police officers and court officials -- among the top of which was this federal judge convicted of extorting $200000 in "loans" from those under him; his 18-year sentence was later reduced to 13 years and he was released in 1990. TLS 5pp rectos only 8" X 11" Oxford WI 1987 December 29. Addressed to Aaron Cohodes. Very good. Two faint original fold lines and 3/4" edge tear at right margin. Writing from prison Holzer congratulates this Chicago publisher on his success then boldly states: ".allow me to introduce myself. I am a prisoner at the Federal Prison Camp Oxford Wisconsin." Interestingly when Holzer was sentenced for his crimes he remarked 'I stand before you a convicted felon exhausted disrobed and defeated. . I have committed crimes. Those crimes have destroyed me. They have wounded my family beyond measure and confused my friends. . There are no words to express my loss my remorse my grief.'' But in this letter he recaps his career then paints Operation Greylord in a different light: "I became in 1985 one of more than seventy judges lawyers and court personnel to find himself the target of a wide-ranging investigation tagged 'Operation Greylord' by the prosecutors and press followed by the inevitable indictment. after a newsy six-week trial I was of course found guilty on most counts. In the media-hyped atmosphere of the day a finding of innocent would have been impossible." The remainder of this lengthy letters is not a legal expose "but I'm ready to take on that assignment next" but rather a description of his novel "Leviticus 18" -- "the story of a Jewish family who lived in the town of Oswiecim Polish Austria-Hungary nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains about thirty-five miles west of Krakow. The action occurs roughly between 1880 and 1910." Interesting and unusual with direct reference to the scandal that ruined his career. unknown‎
