This Danish jurist served as judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice from 1922 to 1930. AQS heavy stock 4¼" X 3½" card The Hague Netherlands 1923 August 12. Near fine. Mounting traces on verso. Attractive piece handsomely penned in Nyholm's neat script. Untranslated it is a quotation from Norwegian dramatist and poet Henrik Ibsen 1828-1906 and reads as follows: "Frit effer Henrik Ibsen = / Og har jeg end seilet min / Skiege i Havn / Saa var det dog hasligt at fare / The Hague Aug 12 1923 / GNyholm / Judge of the Permanent / Court of International / Justice." This Cleveland merchant became well-known as an abolitionist reformer and occasional publisher; among his writings are "The Sabbath" 1840 "The Immigrant's Good Samaritan" 1848 "Law and Government" 1849 "Thoughts on the Fugitive Slave Law and Nebraska Bill" 1955 "The Great Law Book" 1857 "Word of Christ" 1857 and "The Slavery Question Settled" 1862. ALS 1p integral address leaf 7 3/4" X 9 3/4" Chicago IL 1847 January 26. Addressed to Philip C. Johnson Illinois secretary of state. Very good. Mildly but evenly age toned; small separations along original folds neatly and archivally repaired on blank verso. Opens oddly with a discussion of the price of dried peaches -- Kingsbury was a merchant after all! "Mr. Grubbs informed me yesterday that he had just rec'd a letter from the Digings saying that Dormody had just left there for the east -- perhaps Chicago. having sold about all his stock -- that he had not succeeded very well. I am extremely anxious to see him as if I could I have little doubt in some reasonable way possession would be obtained." Dormody is no doubt William Dormody 1796-1876 an Irish-born merchant and businessman who left the Midwest around this time to try his luck in the goldfields of California -- and succeeded; here Kingsbury appears to lust after Dormody's unsold merchandise. He then discusses what appears to be the acquisition of a newspaper -- seeking no doubt a soapbox from which he could broadcast his controversial abolitionist and reform views. ".I have been negociating for the whole of the Western Herald -- financial as well as Editorial. Today the prospect is less than heretofore that I shall engage in it -- & for two reasons vis the price a little too high & the want of firm health. The situation would suit my taste very well but perhaps I could be as useful elsewhere. My expenses here are so high $9 or 10 per week that I may leave in a few days now when the roads are good." Fine content addressing both of Kingsbury's concerns: pursuing merchandise to stock his Cleveland store and pursuing a newspaper purchase to further his reform agenda. Quite uncommon. unknown

WHITSON, John H (1954-1936)
Typed Manuscript Signed
This Hoosier attorney turned writer cranked out potboilers -- dime novels also known as "penny dreadfuls" -- under a variety of pseudonyms for a variety of publishers in the late 19th century whereupon he became a minister and teacher and continued to pen young adult and mainstream fiction such as "Barbara a Woman of the West" 1903 "The Rainbow Chasers" 1904 and other novels. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" Nashville TN 25 March 1923. Very good. Faint edgewear and age toning. A bold and handsome typescript prepared by Whitson of his four-stanza poem "At the Call of the Whistle." This sentimental but sensitive ode to the coming of Spring contrasts new life with the pain of young death: "All things I'd give dear child if you could watch this Spring's returning! / But hark! e'en as I'm wishing it the whistle calls for you." It closes on a surprisingly morbid melancholy note: "So with the Spring we may not walk. Dear heart 'tis useless grieving; / The stony world cares not at all and the dear Lord is so far." Whitson crosses out and changes two words in the text "silver" becomes "bridal" and "must" becomes "will" and at the close he signs in full adding "Ward-Belmont" city and date as well. Whitson taught at the Ward-Belmont school for girls a tony finishing school from 1920 to 1923. Whitson published many poems in many publications but it's quite uncommon to find anything in his hand. unknown

This famed Chicago utility company executive began with the Chicago Telephone Company around the turn of the century and by 1922 when this had morphed into Illinois Bell Telephone Company he served as its president until 1930 and then as chairman of the Board 1930-34; in 1930 he became president of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. TLS 1p 8" X 11" Chicago IL 26 September 1929. Addressed to Waldemar Kaempffert Director of the Rosenwald Industrial Museum in Chicago. Very good. Lightly age toned and mildly edgeworn with original folds visible and slight mounting trace not affecting text at upper left. On "Illinois Bell Telephone Company" letterhead listing him as president Abbott writes to the just-named first director of this museum founded and funded by Sears Roebuck Company president and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald which the following year would be renamed the Museum of Science and Industry and would have a new director. Abbott goes into great detail about "the New York Telephone rate case" of 1921 which involved "the estimated savings effected in New York City by the use of the Pupin loading coil" and other technicalities; he closes by offering Kaempffert "The following pamphlets giving information as to Bell System activities." and spells out their titles. Boldly signed "W.R. Abbott" in black ink at lower right. Whether this business somehow involved the museum is unclear though likely -- and fascinating in any case. unknown

This Swiss-German author's biographies were widely popular in many languages -- among them are Lincoln Napoleon Jesus Bismarck and Goethe. On the message side of a glossy 5¼" X 3¼" heavy stock photograph of Ludwig writing at a desk he boldly pencils: "Thanking for / kind wishes. / Ludwig / Lucerne / 3.3.40 / Greatings sic to your / splendid ." Address portion at right also in his hand to Arnold F. Gates of Eleveland Ohio 1914-09 a future noted Lincoln scholar. Very good. Later this same year Ludwig emigrated to the United States. Surely Ludwig's biography of Lincoln was the occasion for this Lincoln scholar to write the great Lincoln biographer. unknown

(BAYLIES, Cornelius, 1839-? -- Penmanship)
Presented to C. Baylies By the Class of 1874 and 1874 December 25th
Exquisite hand-lettered penmanship example 6¼" X 7" made by an unknown penman or penmen as a Christmas keepsake for the founder of Baylies' Business College of Dubuque Iowa -- said one writer "One of the best and most thorough Business Colleges in the West." Baylies served with the Kansas militia in the Civil War and moved to Dubuque in 1862 joining his cousin's business Baylies Commercial College -- founded 1859 and the oldest school of its kind in Iowa. Before long he became a partner and in 1863 it was renamed the Baylies Commercial School; as sole owner he operated it until 1909; in 1876 he detoured and joined a group of prominent Dubuque citizens who established the Bell Gold Mining Company to mine gold in Plumas City California. The title quoted above is the complete text with "Presented to C. Baylies" in large ornate italic hand and thethree lines below "By the Class of / 1874 and 1875 / December 25th" in a smaller simpler hand and surrounded by elaborate decorative flourishes. A fine example of the type of decorative handwriting normally taught at business schools in the 19th century. unknown

This noted U.S. Treasury Department statistician was an entrepreneur who created a composite photograph of signers of the amendment abolishing slavery that proved quite popular; he was also an inventor archaeologist social reformer philanthropist and evangelist who created cartographic maps of Egypt and North Africa for the Oriental Topographical Corps. ALS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. August 29. Addressed to Giles F. Ward in New York City -- possibly father of Giles F. Ward Jr. 1845-65 a lieutenant with the 12th New York Cavalry who was accidentally killed by a colleague while in North Carolina. Very good. Penned on ultra-thin onion-skin paper with occasional burn-through from heavily-inked letters. Reads in part: "I write this. to request that you will favor me with your own opinion freely expressed as to what the price of the Lincoln Cot should be the patent either on a joint stock operation or on sale in the other way you spoke of a simple sale of the right Please let me know what in your judgment it should be even though it be less than 1/10 the proposed figures" Boldly penned in rich brown ink. Powell and two others one of whose last name was Lincoln designed this specialized portable cot in 1862 and sought to interest the U.S. Army in providing it to the troops. This football safety played eight seasons for the Atlanta Falcons 1972-79 but battled depression caused by dementia as a result of traumatic brain injuries incurred playing football for the rest of his days; he joined other players in a class-action suit against the NFL and committed suicide at age 62. Large and bold "Love in Jesus / Ray Easterling / #32 / Atlanta Falcons" penned in black ballpoint on a special heavy stock 5" X 3" card which he dates 6 December 1976. Fine. RINGGOLD, Samuel (1796-1846)
Autograph Letter Signed
Supposedly the first officer killed in the Mexican-American War the May 11th Battle of Palo Alto was this U.S. Army artillery officer known as the "Father of Modern Artillery" for innovations such as a better saddle and the "flying artillery" -- lighter artillery pieces that can be moved from place to place. ALS 1p lettersheet 8" X 10" Ordnance Offices New York 12 December 1829. Addressed to Major Hoops. Very good. Handsomely swiftly penned in rich brown ink Ringgold here writes the military store keeper at Watervliet New York that "In October last I had the honour to transmit to you thro' the Quarter Master at this post by direction of the Ordc Department together with invoices of the same certain ordnances and stores for which I have to beg you will furnish the usual receipts as the Quarter is nearly closed." After lengthy salutation and hurried signature he adds rank of "Lt on ordc post / Com'g ordc dept." Integral address leaf also in his hand and notes "'On public service'". This is clearly a speedily penned note and Ringgold's signature lacks the decorative paraph sometimes seen. unknown

Dean Stanley" was one of the leading and most prolific liberal Church of England theologians on 19th century England and served as Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881. Partial ANS 1p 4½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintest of age toning; two faint vertical folds. Clipped portion of letter on pale blue stock. Below a few illegible works is a large bold wild educated guess "Yours truly" and "A.P. Stanley" followed by a dozen or so words on three lines that perhaps partially read: "The remuneration is 2£ a / week for copying &c 10" after which it's anyone's guess. Verso also bears 15 or so large words in Stanley's notorious hand some of which may read: "copy for the / place of." and "I can pay / to hear from you" -- or not. Incredibly this outlandishly illegible fragment is accompanied by a clipped late 19th century newspaper tidbit of the period 2 3/4" X 3¼" that describes this very document and the original recipient's experience in trying to transcribe it! Reads in full: "A correspondent of The Manchester Examiner says that he once received from Dean Stanley the most inscrutable epistle he ever beheld. It was written upon poor blue paper and in two kinds of ink the latter portion in black ink and the former in ink about the color of brown vinegar. The writing had a thin timid scratchy look and suggested the thought that it had been written with an old pen with only one prong or with the point of an old stocking-needle. There were no distinct letters as such but a series of nervous pecks at the paper with something smeared with ink. 'I tried over and over again for several days' says the correspondent 'to decipher the missive but to no purpose. I procured a magnifying glass and was simply dismayed at the result. I held it up to a strong gas-light and tried to read the front through the back and the back through the front. I tried to read it perpendicularly horizontally and from each of the four corners diagonally and at last flung myself full length upon the hearthrug and sought a friendly revelation from the glow of the fire but in vain. As a last resource I took it to a clever schoolmaster who after looking carefully over it from beginning to end somewhat discouraged me by asking me who it was from and what it was about. He labored at it more or less for five weeks and then gravely assured me that the man who could read such writing was not yet born.'" Describes this letter to a "T" and presumably written about this same example. An outrageously illegible example of this famously illegible script. unknown

This giant of the telecommunications world headed RCA Radio Corporation of America from 1919 to 1970 -- but began as a lowly Belarus immigrant office boy in 1907 with the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America in New York working his way up the radio and television ladder. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1966 May 10. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates Literary Editor of the Lincoln Herald 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "Radio Corporation of America" letterhead Sarnoff discusses a biography of him that Eugene Lyons had authored: "Thanks you for your kind letter. and the reprint of your excellent review of my biography which appeared in the 'Lincoln Herald.' I am naturally pleased that you found the book so rewarding and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in writing to me." Early in 1966 Harper & Row had published a book by Sarnoff's cousin Eugene Lyons "David Sarnoff: A Biography." Large bold signature in blue ink. Accompanied by a fine glossy 9" X 7" black and white news agency photograph International News Photos a candid closeup of Sarnoff smiling alongside a beauty contestant winner. Caption at bottom which dates this 23 April 1956 describes the scene: "David Sarnoff RCA chairman and chairman of the National Security Training Commission names Barbara Lyman Washington Cherry Blossom Queen an honorary colonel in the Washington Army Reserve at a kick-off luncheon for military reserve week. unknown

The G.I.s General" beloved American Army general active during World War II and the last five-star general; from 1949-53 served as first permanent chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Later life signature "Omar" in black ballpoint tipped to the close of a printed "General Orders No. 50" 6" X 9" 2pp recto and verso issued by the Department of the Army in Washington DC on 15 July 1948. Very good. Mild edgewear; two-punched at left not affecting text. As Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Bradley makes the solemn announcement that "The death of General John Joseph Pershing General of the Armies of the United States which occurred at Washington D.C. on 15 July 1948 is announced to the Army with deep regret." He goes on to summarize Pershing's long career and note a period of mourning and the wearing of mourning bands. Below Bradley's typeset name a white 3" X 1½" slip is affixed clipped from a typed letter with "Sincerely" typed at top and "OMAR N. BRADLEY / General of the Army" typed at bottom between which Bradley signs his first name. Accompanied by a fine glossy 8" X 10" black and white news agency photograph a candid half-length portrait of a smiling Bradley in uniform. Caption printed vertically along right edge dates this 27 June 1947 and describes the scene: "Gen. Omar N. Bradley Veterans Administrator shown leaving the White House after conferring with President Truman today has been named by Washington observers as the most likely choice for U.S. Army Chief of Staff to succeed General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower." An interesting unusual pair. unknown

This Cuban became influential in introducing and popularizing Latin music in the United States first by managing the band of his brother Don Azpiazu and then by taking the stage name Don Mario Antobal and forming "Antobal's Cubans" who toured the U.S. and became popular throughout the 1930s; he later founded a music publishing company. IPS 7" X 5" n.p. n.y. Very good. Minor silvering. Black and white reproduction of a stylized cartoon rendering of "Antobal's Cubans" performing. Across the lower black area in bold white ink he inscribes and signs "Merry Xmas / and a / Happy New Year -- Antobal." A superb example of this uncommon autograph. unknown

Montana resident possibly an attorney. ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Harlem MT 1904 July 21. Addressed to "My dear James & Albert" Smith's brothers. Near fine. Handsomely penned in black ink in a large readable hand this letter largely concerns the claims on "poor Writ's property" for "some of his old time prospect loving friend got around me and did not want Writs mining claims sold that he had held onto for 20 years as they would go for little or nothing. So I paid out on them $500.00 & told the administrator not to sell them. They have to be represented again within a few months it will take between $300 & $400.00 dollars Will you help me represent them If you cannot or do not want to will you let me have your interests On account of your being in Canada & so far away If you will let me have your interests I will send you $25.00 apiece. Should I ever be luckly sic to get any thing out of them I will send you something more." Goes on to explain "the claims are so high up in the mountains and the snow comes there so early the claims must be represented early or else they will be lost. The claims that Writ had in Thunder Mountain have gone by default they were so far away I could do nothing about them." Of some town named Bellevue in Montana he notes "Bellevue is a gone down place very dull there." Invites his brothers to visit: "I'd like to have you both come out and see this country some time do not put it off too long it would be a fine trip for you." This long-term Republican representative from U.S. Grant's adoptive hometown of Galena Illinois served this district in Northwestern Illinois for fourteen terms 1933-61. Partly-printed DS 1p 8½" X 11" Jo Daviess County IL 1926 October 15. Very good. Faint age toning. "Declaration of Intention" document issued by the U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service for one Andrew Boeckl a 24-year-old marble worker from Bavaria Germany who had arrived in New York in 1924. Most interesting is the printed text noting that "It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty and particularly to The German Reich" these last three words inked in -- but better yet is the following printed text: "I am not an anarchist; I am not a polygamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy." Entirely filled out in Allen's attractive hand in black ink and at lower right as clerk of the circuit court he signs boldly. A delightful provocative period piece reminiscent of the oaths of allegiance signed by Confederate soldiers at the close of the Civil War. The Third Reich and anarchy statements are classic 1920s with fascism encroaching upon Europe and anarchists such as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman capturing the headlines. The polygamy content seems a bit less obvious no waves of anti-polygamy sentiment sweeping the country but simply represents a typical post-World War One reaction against extremism of any sort. unknown

Well-known Lafayette University football star who played halfback on their 1921 national championship team -- the last living member of that team at his death; later a running back for the Pottsville Maroons and Philadelphia Quakers. In response to a plea also present from this researcher "attempting to locate a number of Lafayette alumni who have played in the N.F.L." Marhefka replies boldly in blue ballpoint in part: "In addition to making necessary corrections I have added three names of Laf. alumni who were quite prominent in pro football their names are Leonard Brunner '24 Bull Lowe '19 and John Scott '19." The researcher's 8½" X 11" query for assistance in locating Lafayette alumni is present on which Marhefka has inked the names he referred to. With original envelope addressed in Marhefka's hand and signed again. unknown

This classical American pianist was a student of Harold Bauer and himself a respected teacher; his wife was concert singer Elizabeth Poole-Jones. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. 1935. Near fine. Handsome matte finish half-length portrait of a young Sheridan in pin-striped three-piece suit seated with legs crossed one hand clutching a cigarette and the other presumably a music score. In a dark area at lower right Sheridan signs and inscribes boldly in white ink: "For / Richard Copley / In Sincere / appreciation / Frank Sheridan." Great contrast. Copley 1876-1939 Sheridan's manager a well-known New York concert manager. A superb brooding portrait by Arnold Genthe 1869-1942 renowned photographer with his imprint at lower left. unknown

Few 19th century clergymen achieved the level of household-name fame and influence as this renowned Congregationalist minister the most fiery of the fire and brimstone preachers; the brother of writer Harriet Beecher Stowe of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" fame Beecher too was an outspoken social reformer abolitionist and lecturer whose oratory made him wildly popular; pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn New York from 1847 on his meteoric popularity waned later in life only with a scandalous adultery charge brought against him. ANS 1p 4½" X 6" n.p. n.y. likely ca. 1880. Very good. Inoffensive mounting traces on verso. Arranges a meeting. In part: "I have put down in my book tuesday Decr 2d. for you. I shall leave N.Y. in the 8 o'clock a.m. train & stop at the Girard House. Unless sick I do not expect to miss a second time in one Season." Nicely penned. "Girard House" was a large and famous Philadelphia hotel. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9" engraved by J.C. Buttre of New York and titled "Eminent Opponents of the Slave Power" in ornate flowing type along the lower margin. Near fine. Fine head-and-shoulders portraits of 12 noted abolitionists each within a small oval border: John Quincy Adams at the top and beneath him the triumvirate of John Greenleaf Whittier Wendell Phillips and Charles Sumner; surrounding this quartette are clockwise from top William Lloyd Garrison Joshua R. Giddings Cassius M. Clay Benjamin Lundy Owen Lovejoy Gerrit Smith William Cullen Bryant and Henry Ward Beecher. A great pair. unknown

These five German Luftwaffe were all awarded the Knight's Cross: Borngen was an ace who flew 450 combat missions and downed 41 enemy aircraft; Bromen was a pilot who flew more than 600 combat missions and is credited with downing 7 enemy aircraft and destroying 76 tanks 12 supply trains and 4 armored trains; Helbig was a bomber pilot who flew 480 combat missions in many of WW2's major battles and is credited with destroying 182000 gross register tons of Allied shipping; Ketscher was a hauptmann and observer; Schlund was a gunner and radio operator with Helbig's crew flying more than 200 combat missions. Signed Commemorative Envelope 6½" X 4¼" cancelled at the Royal Air Force North Coates base U.K. 28 February 1971. Fine. Left half consists of a pictorial color cachet showing an RAF aircraft in flight captioned "Closure of the Station / 28th February 1971" with text at right detailing the flight on which this envelope was flown. Special circular postal cancellation. These five figures each sign boldly in varying blue inks each adding a title and military abbreviations beneath their signature. Envelope verso bears inkstamped biographical details in German of each. ALS in French 1p 5¼" X 8¼" Paris France 1931 April 18. Addressed to Irving Schwerke 1893-1975 American expatriate pianist and music critic. Fine. Not translated but Grelinger in his execrable script calls Schwerke "a sincere and rare friend" thanks him for and declines a lunch invitation and mentions stopping by the next morning to chat for fifteen minutes. Below his signature Grelinger pens a curious thing whose meaning is entirely cryptic: two intersecting blank music staffs each with a treble clef and two question marks. Interesting and odd. At lower left also strangely he appears to have penned one measure of music and then thoroughly scribbled it out! unknown

The daughter of one of Abraham Lincoln's law partners and his presidential bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon 1828-93 she pieced together and edited her father's book "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865" Chicago 1895; a bawdy and not particularly popular companion to the president Lamon authored it was actually ghostwritten an 1872 "Life of Abraham Lincoln" that's considered the first debunking biography of the president. PS 8½" X 11" n.p. 1945 November 4. Very good. Small glue stain at upper right well away from image. This most unusual PS does not depict Teillard herself but rather is a thermofax copy of a 3½" X 3½" portrait of a young Ward Hill Lamon centered and with large margins. Early head-and-shoulders portrait showing a youthful Lamon with long curly hair and flowing goatee. On the ample lower margin his daughter inscribes it big and bold: "With regards of / Dorothy Lamon Teillard / November 4 1945." Though written while well into her 80s Teillard's script is fluid and attractive. A quite uncommon autograph in an unusual form. unknown

The biographer of cowboy novelist Eugene Manlove Rhodes and executor of his literary estate this writer authored such titles as "A Bar Cross Liar: Bibliography of Eugene Manlove Rhodes" 1956 "California: The Golden Shore by the Sundown Sea" 1980 and other Western histories -- along with popular Whitman juvenile Westerns such as "Gene Autry and the Golden Ladder Gang" 1950 and "Gene Autry and the Big Valley Grab" 1953. Two ALsS each 1p 8½" X 11" and 7" X 10½" respectively Chico CA 1947 January 10 and February 11. Addressed to Owen Davies. Near fine. Fine content concerning Davies ordering copies of Hutchinson's edition of Rhodes' short story collection "The Little World Waddies" which he had designed and printed for him by the legendary printer/typographer/book designer Carl Hertzog. "We have been swamped with orders" writes Hutchinson "and have fallen far behind due to bindery output; we are filling orders in chronological sequence but have made an exception in your case." As an unrelated aside he comments: "I would judge that you are of Welsh extraction. the most soul-stirring experience I have ever had or expect to have was watching the debarkation of a Welsh regiment at Oran in Algeria when they marched from the quay up the steep sloping hillside into the town singing the 'March of the Men of Harlech'." Davies ordered 52 copies of "The Little World Waddies" by the way -- a book that today generally sells for several hundred dollars. Gilbert was a popular Midwest wrestling champion of the '50s and '60s holder of many titles half of a celebrated tag team with Billy Goelz. Williams was a fixture on early national wrestling telecasts out of Marigold Garden with tag team partner Ruby Kay; narrowly missed being part of the bloodiest wreck in wrestling history: on March 3 1945 a flight from England to Paris carrying six out of seven pro wrestlers on a USO tour to entertain Allied troops crashed killing all aboard; Williams missed this flight and later that month wrestled at a Fred Kohler wrestling program in Chicago to raise funds for his colleagues' widows and children. PS 5" X 3½" n.p. Chicago IL n.y. July 1960. Very good. Minor yellowish tape stain at each corner not terribly disfiguring and well away from signatures. Original black-and-white snapshot likely one of a kind showing Williams and Goelz at a table signing autographs -- Williams signs across the tabletop boldly in red fineline marker. Together with Ray Evans this formidable and prolific songwriting duo composed numerous iconic film tunes. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Beverly Hills California on 28 February 1973 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. Single 8-cent "George Gershwin" stamp at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no recipient's name/address. Along the top edge in bold blue ballpoint Livingston inscribes and signs: "My very best to Paul Johnston / Jay Livingston." Below this scattered among the remaining blank area Livingston pens SIX musical measures from six of his best-known tunes neatly penning the title beneath each: "Buttons and Bows" "Que Sera Sera" "To Each His Own" "Silver Bells" "Mona Lisa" and "Tammy." A veritable musical quotation autobiography -- "Buttons and Bows" was composed for "The Paleface" in 1948 "Que Sera Sera" for "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in 1956 "To Each His Own" for "To Each His Own" in 1946 "Silver Bells" for "The Lemon Drop Kid" in 1951 "Mona Lisa" for "Captain Carey" in 1950 and "Tammy" for "Tammy and the Bachelor" in 1957. One occasionally sees Christmas-theme First Day Covers inscribed with a bar or two from "Silver Bells" -- but a music theme cover such as this inscribed with music from six -- count 'em SIX! -- of their most famous songs is rather unusual and most desireable. Original newsprint mimeographed text sheet still present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Says Reds Arm Koreans and Flout Pact" this text begins: "Called back to the United States for an over-all review of the Korean situation Lt. General John R. Hodge U.S. Commander in Korea is shown right with Secretary of War Robert Patterson as he went to report to President Truman." This exceptional image is pristine and itself scarce. Typed draft of Vinson's brief "Who's Who" entry bearing one hand-printed correction quite likely but not conclusively in Vinson's hand. Comes with a fine 8½" X 6½" glossy news agency photograph International News Photo of 1947 showing Vinson as chief justice administering the oath of office to the new U.S. Solicitor General while Attorney General Tom Clark observes. This Rhode Islander came from a line of military officers -- including his brother John Jay 1815-95 noted naval officer. ALS 2pp recto and verso 7" X 8" New London CT 1858 December 3. Addressed to "Doct. Duffield" D. Bethune Duffield 1821-91 well known scholar and poet. Good plus. Binding traces along left margin; chip at lower left corner not affecting text; some fold separations archivally mended on verso side. Overall clean quite legible and not unattractive despite condition. On September 10 1858 the 45th anniversary of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie fought largely by Rhode Islanders on the American side was commemorated with many celebrations taking place in Detroit. Here Almy writes to one of the participants in these ceremonies: "We had the great pleasure in September last of reading in the New York Times many extracts from your very grand & elegant Poem delivered in that month on the ever memorable anniversary of Perry's gallant achievement on Lake Erie." Almy asks for a copy of Duffield's poem noting "We do want it exceedingly. I am myself a real genuine Rhode Islander -- proud of my State & of the glorious men who have given it its reputation. I have in my parlor a very fine likeness of the Hero of Erie and besides recollect his personal appearance well. I saw him receive the welcome of our native town Newport on his return from Erie. And now Sir will you do us the favor to furnish us with your whole Poem. If it is published in pamphlet form we hope you will pardon us for asking for 2 copies as we want one for my Brother who is a Lt. in the Navy & who was delighted with what he read of your brilliant effort." Interestingly the sailing master of the brig "Somers" one of Perry's fleet was a Rhode Islander named Thomas C. Almy -- likely a relative of William E. An intriguing piece. unknown

TNS "Tom" 1p 7¼" X 10½" Los Angeles CA 1962 March 16. Addressed to "Don" Woolf of California Artists. Near fine. On letterhead of CBS affiliate KNX. "Elyse asked that I send you a couple of signatures" Harmon writes. "I hope that the enclosed will be o.k." Bold signature first name only in dark red. Harmon's wife the actress Elyse Knox 1917-2012 was providing original artwork for this greeting card company that published a line of Christmas cards featuring art by Hollywood stars. The "couple of signatures" mentioned is present in the form of an 8½" X 3" slip from which a portion has been neatly snipped off at upper left the Knox signature actually used on the greeting card leaving her large blue ballpoint signature beneath. Accompanied by a fine 5" X 7" glossy black and white photograph an informal 3/4th pose of a smiling Harmon in suit and tie and smiling Knox in dress and pearls holding hands. This Canadian-American composer songwriter pianist singer and music educator was a popular vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley figure; Caruso put him "on the map" in 1913 when he recorded O'Hara's song "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Now Know" and in 1914 he enjoyed his biggest hit "Tennessee I Hear You Calling Me"; during World War One his hit "K-K-K-Katy" sold more than one million sheet music copies; he was also an early ethnomusicologist recording and collecting Native American music on wax cylinders -- some of which he later sang himself in early Victor and Edison recordings; in 1945 he was elected president of the Composers-Authors Guild; all told he composed more than 500 popular and patriotic songs. Printed DS 9" X 12" 6pp n.p. 1943 January 25. Very good. Mildest bit of age toning. Sheet music for "I Was the Tree: Sacred Song" with music by O'Hara and lyrics by Daniel S. Twohig published by R.L. Huntinger New York NY in 1937. Across the top of the front cover he inscribes and signs it large and bold in blue fountain pen: "For a great basso William Wahlert / Compliments & best wishes / of the composer. / Geoffrey O'Hare / Jany 25: / 1943." The 6th and last leaf consists of O'Hara and Twohig's song "Soft Were Your Hands Dear Jesus." Interesting unusual piece. unknown
