This Russian-born American composer ended up in France after the Russian Revolution where he performed and composed prolifically -- symphonies orchestral pieces piano concertos operas ballet and choral music; post-WW2 he emigrated to Chicago where he taught and composed. Remarkably beautiful ALS 1p 6" X 11" Vanves France n.y. likely early 1930s. Near fine. On a lovely heavy tannish tissue paper Tcherepnine pens in his usual miniscule script and black ink a note to unidentified "Cher ami" in French referring to the first performance of his new work "Suite georgienne" and the Salle de l'ancienne Conservatoire in Paris; he switches to English briefly near the close when noting trying to reach someone by telephone "but was unsuccessfull!" This handsome note occupies only a small central portion at the right margin much of this sheet being filled with an extraordinary partly hand-drawn and partly inkstamped color drawing presumably Japanese depicting a monkey descending the branches of a tree bearing numerous orange flowers against a pale blue background. Wonderfully executed in pale soft colors. At lower right and lower left are small inkstamped insignias that we assume indicate the artist. A truly exceptional letter from the young composer. unknown

SWOPE, Herbert Bayard (1882-1958)
Typed Letter Signed
This colorful and influential editor and journalist -- brother of General Electric president Gerard Swope -- won a Pulitzer prize for his World War One coverage; he edited the New York World from 1920 to 1929. TLS 12pp rectos only 8" X 10¼" Washington DC 1918 January 23. Addressed "To the Council New York World" -- though Swope crosses this out in pencil and adds "Dear RP" publisher Ralph Pulitzer eldest son of Joseph Pulitzer and himself a highly influential journalist. Very good. All 12 pages of this lengthy missive have been neatly tipped together along the left margin the whole of which was affixed into one of Swope's personal scrapbooks since removed. Late in 1916 Swope authored several articles collecting titled "Inside the German Empire" which earned him the 1917 Pulitzer Prize for reporting -- which must have impressed President Woodrow Wilson mightily for only months later Swope writes this detailed report to the editorial board of his employer newspaper of which he would soon become editor. Writing "Confidential" in the upper left corner of the first page he opens with an auspicious "The president asked me to come to see him yesterday. I was with him almost an hour. It was most enlightening." The remainder of the report is a detailed frank and flattering look at Wilson and his conduct of World War One. Swope obviously made a carbon copy of this report one to mail and the other to keep. This is his retained copy although the first two leaves are the originals and leaves three through twelve the carbons. He signs this copy in full and boldly at the close and throughout the text are original non-carbon additions deletions and corrections in ink. Two heavy stock scrapbook margins in which Swope describes the content in thick blue pencil are also present each roughly 10" X 3" and provide interesting background. These read: "This was written after I had been in Washington for several months assigned there to ' the administration out of the water' if I thought things were going badly. The World was a strong Wilson paper which would have given extra force to the attack NY in the Boston / Phila. No one were to use my dispatch if critical" adding in regular pencil "Waddell Catchings of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had announced that "we had lost the war." A fascinating letter -- whether it saw light of day in any published form is unknown. Also accompanied by a superb unusual glossy 9" X 7" news agency photograph International News Photo a fine image showing a smiling Swope standing with General Eisenhower and two others. Original mimeographed paper label affixed to verso which dates this scene 9 September 1947 titles it "Swope Decorated for War Services" and describes it: "James F. Byrnes former U.S. Secretary of State indulges in a bit of good-natured ribbing after General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower had presented the Medal for Merit to Herbert Bayard Swope right in a ceremony at the War Department. Looking on are Gen. Eisenhower and Bernard M. Baruch second from right. Mr. Swope was honored for 'exceptionally meritorious conduct in performance of outstanding services in World War II.' unknown

Updating form sent out by "Who's Who in America" for its 1920-21 edition on light orange paper with Frankfurter's 3" X 1½" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. Frankfurter has written in two small additions "assistant to the Secretary of Labor" and "appt'd. chmn. War Labor Policies Bd. June 1918" signing and dating it at the bottom. Several editor's marks and corrections in purple ink. Known as "Gentleman Jim" this influential Country Western singer of the '50s and '60s achieved great popularity with such hits as "He'll Have to Go" 1960; he died at age 40 in a plane crash in Tennessee. Color IPS verso heavy stock 3½" X 5½" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Handsome color picture postcard issued by RCA Victor Records the recto featuring a nice half-length portrait of Reeves in tie and red sweater. Verso features message and address portions and across this in bold large script as red as his sweater Reeves writes "To / Donald / Best of luck always / Gratefully / Jim Reeves." The signature itself which runs from the lower left corner to the upper right corner measures a full 5½"! A superb example of this rarity. unknown

The Cornell All-American football guard later coached the University of Cincinnati and at Pennsylvania College; in 1918 he was elected to Congress from New York as a Republican and was reelected 20 times serving until his death. ALS 2pp single leaf 8½" X 11" "In France" postmarked Paris 1918 January 4. Addressed to "Aunt & Auntee." Near fine. Excellent World War One content penned on the evee of his election to Congress reading in part: "We are leaving for England. after a short time in London we will start for home. I have seen a great deal since leaving home. We have travelled more than 1000 miles in France by auto & I don't know how far by train. I shall bring pictures of most that we have seen & notes that will explain all that we have seen. Aside from this we will have lantern slides & moving pictures." He also notes "It has been a great & thrilling experience to see the battle fields along the entire front. I never thought so much destruction of homes happiness & resources possible." This long-time rabbi at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel Philadelphia from 1949 to 1979 was the first Jewish chaplain to obtain flag rank in the U.S. armed forces when he was promoted to Rear Admiral in the Chaplains Corps in 1975 having entered the Navy in 1944; a noted historian of American Jewish history he is best remembered for the 1951 classic "American Jewry in the Civil War." TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Philadelphia PA 1952 April 10. Addressed to CARL HAVERLIN 1899-1985 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music Inc. BMI. Very good. Korn had asked Haverlin a founding member of the Civil War Round Table of New York to help him organize a Civil War Round Table or Lincoln Fellowship group in Philadelphia but Haverlin wasn't available. "It's awfully good of you to suggest someone else from your group. I have never met Boyd Stutler the John Brown scholar but have had some correspondence with him. Fletcher Pratt of course I know by reputation. I am sure that either would do well although I am not sure whether any one of them knows as well as you the organizational problems or the difficulty in creating programs." Handsome full signature. The younger brother of Johann Jr. "The Waltz King" Strauss and Josef Strauss with whom he formed the renowned Strauss Orchestra that dominated Vienna's light music scene for decades and child of Johann Strauss Sr. "The Father of the Waltz" was himself a noted conductor and respected composer. AMuQS 1p 3½" X 2½" n.p. n.y. 1901. Very good. Faintly age toned; barely visible mounting trace at corners. Strauss was apparently asked for a snippet from an original composition for at the center of this heavy card he has affixed a 2¼" X 1" slip bearing three small neatly penned measures from an unidentified composition -- likely a waltz as it notes 3/4 time. Signed First Day Cover
This influential black musician educator and composer pageant "Rolling Along in Negro Song" 1945 served as choir master of St. Louis's renowned Antioch Baptist Church and as president of the National Association of Negro Musicians 1960-65; one of his most famed pupils was the opera star Grace Bumbry; "Billups Avenue" in St. Louis is named in his honor and he was first recipient of the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in 1969 -- the same year the U.S. honored Handy with a stamp. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Memphis TN on May 17 1969 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Single 6-cent "W.C. Handy Father of the Blues" stamp at upper right. Near fine. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Across the "sweet spot" Billups signs bold and large 5"! in black ballpoint. Comes with original 9½" X 4" transmittal envelope bearing Billups name and address printed in his hand at upper left. GREELEY, Horace (1811-72)
Autograph Letter Signed
Probably the most famous 19th century American journalist he of "Go West young man" immortality founded and edited "The New Yorker" 1834-41 then the renowned "New York Tribune" 1841 whose popularity gained its editor's oft-expressed views wide influence; ran as Democratic presidential candidate in 1872 but was soundly defeated by incumbent U.S. Grant. Slightly damaged ALS 2pp 5" X 8" n.p. 1871 November 20. Very good. Addressed to Ralph Meecker. Slight mounting trace along top edge of second page where the right margin is also closely cropped affecting the "ley" in Greeley. An unusual defacement consists of two small side by side "windows" the leftmost measuring 1¼" X ½" the rightmost ½" X ¼" neatly excised near the top of the first page just above "Dear Ralph." While censorship in letters normally consists of the removal of the recipient's name or signer's name this defacement appears just below the "New-York Tribune" letterhead the larger whole to the left of "Nov. 20" where some writers indicate the city from whence they write and the smaller to the right of the same phrase where the letter's year would have appeared. Above this latter whole "1871" has been added in another hand then crossed out. Four or so words on the verso are affected by this. All this suggests that for some reason the defacer didn't want anyone reading the letter to know where or when it was written -- odd since the letter is not controversial in content but rather written to a gardener or landscaper! Reads in part: "About my planting if I could have a bushel of Hickory Nuts a bush of best nuts and a bushel of White oak Acorns planted on my lot. I would also plant White Pine and Black Locust seed if I could get it to. show vitality. I prefer these kinds; but I would also set out another send young Sugar Maples. if I could get them at a decent price. I would plant some young Hickory and young White Oaks if not too dear." Discusses order and scheduling these. Accompanied by a superb contemporary 5½" X 8½" steel engraved portrait. Despite strange damage an interesting fairly attractive letter. unknown

Broadside printing of this most renowned poem signed big and bold at the lower margin "Your friend Edwin Markham: / Staten Island N.Y." Bright and attractive. "Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans / Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground" Markham begins. "The emptiness of ages in his face / And on his back the burden of the world." -- still a powerful and moving piece despite changes in poetry style and diction. Inscribed to pianist John G. Leiser. Fine. Striking full-length outdoors pose in fur coat standing in an elaborate formal garden boldly inscribed in black fountain pen across the center "To John G. Leiser / with all good wishes / Frieda Hempel." With original envelope. Accompanied by TLS from secretary 2pp 8½" X 11" New York NY 1926 March 19. Addressed to John Leiser. Very good. Tells "the origin of the Jenny Lind concerts": "In 1920 the year of the 100th anniversary of Jenny Lind's birth the St. Eric Society of New York. wanted to honor the memory of the great singer in some way. it was decided the celebration should take the form of a reproduction of the first Jenny Lind concert given in America which as you know was held in Castle Garden in 1850. The President and also members of the committee of the society approached Miss Hempel on the subject of appearing in the role of the beloved Jenny Lind. Miss Hempel after considering the matter an entire summer finally consented and spent many weeks reading and studying for the novel role. The concert eventually took place at Carnegie Hall October 6th 1920. The success of the performance was unprecedented." With original envelope. unknown

Large bold full signature in blue ink below which he pens "1938 with I / ZG234" heavy stock 5½" X 3½" glazed card n.p. n.y. Fine. Handsome condition blank legal form published by this noted early 19th century publisher of legal blanks; at the death of one of the sons of company founder Alexander Gould in 1884 "The American Stationer" noted "Legal forms bearing its imprint are known from one end of the country to another." This particular form printed on pale blue stock typical of the 1850s is an "Article of Co-partnership" and consists of boilerplate text with blank areas meant to be filled in by hand. MGM / UA. Very Good. Octavo fine in white plastic case. <br/><br/>Jerry Maren was the Lollipop Kid part of the Lollipop Guild with the Munchkins in the film "The Wizard of Oz". A versatile performer he went on the perform as Little Oscar for the Oscar Mayer meat company and as Mayor McCheese and The Hamburglar for McDonalds Corp. He also had a walk-on in a "Seinfeld" episode. Maren was the last surviving cast member from the 1939 film. This photograph is boldly signed " Jerry / Maren / Lollipop / Kid " in black ink and undersigned by Marcella Krienzler who was married to Emil Kranzler one of the village Munchkins. This English politician and jurist served as member of parliament and other high government positions but is best known as Chief Justice of the Common Please 1824-29. Free-Franked Envelope 4 3/4" X 3" tipped to 7" X 4" album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. On the front portion only of this typically small envelope Wynford addresses it in his usual illegible scrawl possibly later life to "Waverly Esqr / Post Office" signing simply "Wynford" at lower left as usual. Below this on the period album leaf to which this is neatly affixed is penned "Lord Wynford late Lord Chief Justice Best" in a handsome hand. A nice example. unknown

This obscure Revolutionary War figure is remembered for "Nicholson's Regiment" a militia unit he commanded from New York raised in Quebec from New York soldiers their task being to help defend Canada; they were formed in 1776 and disbanded late that year. ALS 1p 8½" X 11" New York 1785 March 9. Addressed to Evans Wharry likely a "Nicholson's Regiment" officer. Very good. Moderate even age toning. Asks Wharry to take care of a promissory note. In part: ".Capt Black is dayly at me for the amount of the note I gave him last winter on your account. take such measures either by payment or otherwise as will releive sic me from such applications." The son of Declaration of Independence signer Lewis Morris 1726-98 and nephew of statesman Gouverneur Morris 1752-1816 was himself a soldier in the Revolutionary war -- aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee later on the staff of General Nathanael Greene and himself raised to the rank of general; postwar he helped found the village of Butternuts Otsego County in 1787 and served in the New York legislature; Morris New York is named in his honor. Hardcover. Popular American novelist whose works include "The Whirligig of Time" 1916 "Family" 1923 "The Seafarers" 1924 and "I the King: The Story of a Rich Young Man" 1924. Superb trio of items: First an ANS 1p 5¼" X 6 3/4" New Haven CT 1923 March 26. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "In answer to your request" writes Williams "I enclose a page from the MS of my novel 'Goshen Street.' It must have been written in the summer of 1919." Bold full signature. Second the aforementioned manuscript page an unsigned AM 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Full holograph leaf in pencil and marked as page 294 from this novel published by Frederic A. Stokes Company in New York in 1920. Williams' script is as usual hurried by fairly legible. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. Third and last -- but certainly not least is an inscribed first edition of "Goshen Street." Small 8vo. Brown cloth. 323pp. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear and bumped corners but tight and attractive overall. Delightfully this is Williams' personal copy of his book bearing his handsome custom bookplate on the front pastedown. Opposite this on the front flyleaf he inscribes it boldly and whimsically -- to himself! "W.W. Williams / from / The Author. / Harding Day 1920. / On this day W.L. Phelps talked / of this book in his public lecture / and this copy was used by him / in reviewing the work for the N.Y. / Times Sunday Oct. 31." Phelps 1865-1943 was an English professor at Yale University 1892-1933 and a popular and influential literary critic essayist and lecturer. Do you call it an "association copy" when the author inscribes it to himself Why Phelps would be using Williams' personal copy of "Goshen Street" as his review copy or how Williams ended up Phelps' review copy is a mystery -- though the fact that Williams and Phelps both lived in New Haven probably had something to do with it! An incredibly unusual and handsome trio. hardcover

(OPERATION GREYLORD). HOLZER, Reginald J (1928-92)
Typed Letter Signed
This huge corruption investigation of the 1980s involved the FBI IRS USPS Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and resulted in a large number of indictments and convictions of judges lawyers sheriffs police officers and court officials -- among the top of which was this federal judge convicted of extorting $200000 in "loans" from those under him; his 18-year sentence was later reduced to 13 years and he was released in 1990. TLS 5pp rectos only 8½" X 11" Oxford WI 1987 December 29. Addressed to a Chicago publisher. Very good. Two faint original fold lines and 3/4" edge tear at right margin. Writing from prison Holzer congratulates this Chicago publisher on his success then boldly states: ".allow me to introduce myself. I am a prisoner at the Federal Prison Camp Oxford Wisconsin." Interestingly when Holzer was sentenced for his crimes he remarked 'I stand before you a convicted felon exhausted disrobed and defeated. . I have committed crimes. Those crimes have destroyed me. They have wounded my family beyond measure and confused my friends. . There are no words to express my loss my remorse my grief.'' But in this letter he recaps his career then paints Operation Greylord in a different light: "I became in 1985 one of more than seventy judges lawyers and court personnel to find himself the target of a wide-ranging investigation tagged 'Operation Greylord' by the prosecutors and press followed by the inevitable indictment. after a newsy six-week trial I was of course found guilty on most counts. In the media-hyped atmosphere of the day a finding of innocent would have been impossible." The remainder of this lengthy letters is not a legal expose "but I'm ready to take on that assignment next" but rather a description of his novel "Leviticus 18" -- "the story of a Jewish family who lived in the town of Oswiecim Polish Austria-Hungary nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains about thirty-five miles west of Krakow. The action occurs roughly between 1880 and 1910." Interesting and unusual with direct reference to the scandal that ruined his career. unknown
