‎LILLIE Gordon W. "Pawnee Bill" 1860 1942 and MILLER Zack T. ? 1952‎

‎Pair of Signatures‎

‎Lillie's family operated a flour mill in Illinois but in Kansas Gordon learned the Pawnee language and became an interpreter for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show -- thus "Pawnee Bill" was born and he and wife opened their own Wild West show in 1888 eventually joining with Buffalo Bill in 1908. Confederate officer George Washington Miller established the 110000-acre "101 Ranch" in the Oklahoma Territory in 1893 the largest ranch in the country at that time and upon his death in 1903 his three sons Joe George Zack were persuaded by their next-door-neighbor "Pawnee Bill" Lillie to create their own Wild West Show; for the next 30 years they struggled with this touring the country and even abroad while Buffalo Bill's show was tapering off and the film industry was taking off; by 1932 only Zack was still alive and declared bankruptcy. Large and bold "Thank You / G.W. Lillie / 'Pawnee Bill'" in Lillie's typical blue fountain pen ink on a buff heavy stock 3" X 5" penny postal card. Near fine. Lillie's rubberstamped return address appears near the top of this card "--From-- / Pawnee Bill's Oldtown / and Indian Trading Post. / 2 Miles West of / Pawnee Oklahoma / on U.S. Highway 64" his inscription and signature near the center. Verso shows typed recipient Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and postal cancellation of Pawnee Oklahoma on 22 May 1934. "Zack T Miller / 101 Ranch / Okla / 1934" penned large and bold in black ink on a buff heavy stock 5" X 3" penny postal card. Near fine. Verso bears the same recipient as the Lillie card and postal cancellation from Ponca City Oklahoma on 27 August 1934. A wonderfully-matched pair from these two compadres who worked together. unknown‎

‎ROOKE George 1650 1709‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This celebrated English naval officer joined as a volunteer in 1672 and retired as Admiral of the Fleet in 1705 distinguishing himself with many commands in wars ranging from the Third Anglo-Dutch War in the 1670s to the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century; he is often remembered for destroying the Spanish treasure fleet in the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 and for commanding the naval forces that captured Gibraltar in 1704. ALS 2pp lettersheet 5 3/4" X 7" Canterbury England n.y. September 29. Addressed to "Dear Madm." Near fine. Faintly age toned. Flowery words of condolence presumably to a daughter of a deceased friend reading: "As I can never forget the obligations I hv to the Dutchess of Roxborough nor think off her without the uttmost concern so give me Leave to condole with you in the sincerest manner for the Loss off her that was not only Valluable to her owne family butt to every one that knew her and though her Death was what we had all reason to feare yett I must confess I had flattered my self with the thought off seeing her again she seamed so chearfull when I saw her Last butt her Lite had always been such that I believe the thought off her Death was more Terrible to her friends then to her self. I will not trouble yr. Ladyship with any more news then to beg you would not so far give way to this affliction but think if she were capable of conveying her thoughts to you she would desire you to be easy and hapy and as yr. Ladyship is very young so may the remaindr. of yr. Life be as hapy as I wish it." In a postscript he also mentions his life "Lady Mary" and "my mother" but since his first and second wives were both named Mary this only dates this undated letter to the 1684 to 1702 period likely the latter period. Docket on verso indicates this letter was later returned to the third Mrs. Rooke Catherine Knatchbull who the admiral married in 1706: "Lady Rooke / Receiv'd Oct.r ye 2d / 1718." This scarce letter is accompanied by a superb 5" X 7" stipple-point engraving of Rooke a head-and-shoulders portrait of him later in life wearing armor published by Edward Harding in London in 1799. Also present is a handwritten page of biographical notes about Rooke and two other 17th century English notables penned by an unknown 19th century collector. unknown‎

‎STANWYCK Barbara 1907 90‎

‎Signature / Unsigned Photograph‎

‎Popular and versatile American actress of numerous films "Double Indemnity" and "Stella Dallas" earned her two of her four Oscar nominations and early television. A large and bold large signature in blue ink on a heavy stock 5" X 2 3/4" card n.p. n.y. ca. 1944. Very good. Small tape stain at each edge not affecting signature. Stanwyck inadvertently signed this card upside down so the "Naval Aid Auxiliary" logo in gilt blue and red appears at bottom center with red stripe along bottom edge and blue stripe along top edge. This organization raised funds for its war-time activities by enlisting many film stars to sign these decorative cards which were then made available for purchase to the public. Accompanied by a very good 9" X 8" glossy black and white photograph a scene showing an angry young pistol-packing Stanwyck facing off with Humphrey Bogart who clutches a curtain cord to strangle her in the 1947 mystery "The Two Mrs. Carrolls." unknown‎

Later life signature "Omar" in black ballpoint tipped to the close of a printed "General Orders No. 50" 6" X 9" 2pp recto and verso issued by the Department of the Army in Washington DC on 15 July 1948. Very good. Mild edgewear; two-punched at left not affecting text. As Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Bradley makes the solemn announcement that "The death of General John Joseph Pershing General of the Armies of the United States which occurred at Washington D.C. on 15 July 1948 is announced to the Army with deep regret." ‎BECKWITH Robert Todd 1904 85‎

‎Signed Envelope / Unsigned Snapshot Photographs‎

‎Abraham Lincoln's great-grandson and Robert Todd Lincoln's grandson second child of Robert's daughter Jessie Lincoln Beckwith 1875-1948; wealthy and reclusive R.T.L. Beckwith shunned publicity and the spotlight and died without issue -- making him the last living direct Lincoln descendant at the time of his death. Signed envelope 8 3/4" X 4" Manchester VT n.d. faint postal cancellation 1972 October 2. Near fine. At upper left corner of this heavy stock orange/brownish envelope Beckwith boldly prints "R.T.L. Beckwith / Hildene / Manchester / Vt." in black fineline and in the recipient address area at center writes in cursive "Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Newman / The Abraham Lincoln Book Shop / Chicago / Ill." Alongside this in another hand presumably a postal employee "18 E. Chestnut" has been lightly pencilled. Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 was the founder of the noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and in the 1970s became one of the few people in the Lincoln world that Beckwith took a shine to and to whom he would sell artifacts handed down in the family from Abraham Mary and Robert Lincoln. Beckwith's autograph is quite scarce in any form. Beckwith lived in Virginia for much of his life so why he would be writing Newman from the estate of his grandfather in Vermont is an intriguing mystery. Inside this envelope are two original 4" X 3" color photographs --- almost certainly unpublished. These informal snapshots both blank on verso are both pristine and unfaded. The first depicts Beckwith in think sweater and knit cap splitting logs what else in a wooded backyard looking up at the camera. The second was apparently taken in the attic of Beckwith's home and depicts two short barrister bookcases filled with hardbound books an oil painting of what appears to be Robert E. Lee in later years leaning against one wall an old trunk labeled "R.T.L.B" in the foreground amidst typical attic clutter vase lightbulb boxes etc. Also present is a pristine blank sheet of Beckwith's imprinted 8" X 11" letterhead stationery from his home "Woodstock on the Piankatank" in Hartfield Virginia. A delightfully unusual and extremely scarce grouping. hardcover‎

Boldly attractively penned in brown ink. So profuse is James's apology though that he fails to mention the object of Ballou's note! Amusingly the very next year Ballou's illustrated pictorial founded 1851 passed along this unflattering tidbit from a London magazine: "The American papers report the particulars of a fire in the house of Mr. G.P.R. AMS 1p 7 3/4" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned; two file holes at left not affecting text. Full page of bold neatly pencilled text on this cheap lined notebook paper head "WN-59" and beginning: "It is no longer required of the chief or ruler to be a great fighter himself. It is enough for him to see that his fighting men are properly organized and officered. What is especially required of him is intelligence executive ability foresight justice -- wisdom." Not seemingly a working draft page from a drama though further research required as we have not been able to identify the text. ‎MACFARLANE Peter Clark 1981 1924‎

‎Typed Manuscript Signed‎

‎This well-rounded California pastor railroad man actor playwright and lecturer was a popular short story writer and novelist "Those Who Have Come Back" 1914 "Tongues of Flame" 1924 and penned the scripts for the films "Guiles of Women" 1921 starring Will Rogers and "A Pair of Hellions" 1924. TMS 1p 8" X 11" Pacific Grove CA 1923 March 8. Near fine. Actual working draft page p. 23 from a short story titled "Mercy" which was published in the May 1923 issue of "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Typed double spaced with numerous additions deletions and corrections. Along the wide right margin vertically Macfarlane signs large and bold in full in black ink adding date and place and noting "a page from the MS of / 'Mercy' Cosmopolitan for / May 1923." Content concerns a minister named Robert N. Mason confessing a sexual crime to a friend George Fawcett during a nighttime drive through what seems suspiciously like heading north from Macfarlane's home in Pacific Grove: In part "The city of E____ enjoys a climate that has bland moments. This was one of them. It was a black velvety all-enveloping sort of night -- the very night for confidences; and the car was turned north away from the city away from the lights away north endlessly north into the open country. The minister apparently suffering the greatest distress with something upon his heart that demanded expression seemed nevertheless quite unable to utter himself." Interestingly about a year after this was signed on June 9 1924 Macfarlane bought a gun at a local gun shop said goodbye to wife and children and drove north to San Francisco where he put a bullet in his head outside the San Francisco morgue. Unsigned AL 1p lettersheet 7" X 9" n.p. London England 1811 November 8. Addressed to "Mr City Remembrancer." Very good. Binding traces along left edge. Formal third-person enquiry reading in part: "The Charge d'Affaires of the U. States of America will have the honor of dining with the Lord Mayor tomorrow at Guildhall. He will with their permission take with him his friend Mr Heyward an American gentleman. He would thank Mr City Remembrancer to inform him whether he is to go direct to Guildhall at four o'clock or whether he is to meet the procession at any particular place." November 9th was the traditional date on which the Lord Mayor Matthew Wood 1768-1843 took his insignia of office in a grand state procession together with other dignitaries from the palace yard through London to Guildhall where a grand feast awaited. Ironic that only months after writing this the U.S. and Great Britain would be at war and Smith would hightail it back to Baltimore to aid in the defense of his hometown. unknown‎

‎WEYERHAEUSER Frederick 1834 1914‎

‎Partly-Printed Document Signed‎

‎The eighth wealthiest American of all time was a German-born lumber magnate who began his empire in Rock Island Illinois in 1856 starting as a night fireman at a sawmill and working his way up until he owned this sawmill then began adding more until the "Weyerhauser Syndicate" was enormous; he moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1900 where the firm still operates and is the world's largest timber seller. Partly-Printed Document Signed 1p 8 3/4" X 3 3/4" Rock Island IL 1881 November 15. Very good. Ornate check drawn on the Peoples National Bank printed in black on blue stock and featuring decorative border a variety of ornate typefaces and a steel-engraved vignette at left showing a puffing locomotive at a train station. The check has been made out to Weyerhaeuser in the amount of $25000 and is signed by the bank president Bailey Davenport. Davenport 1823-90 was the son of Davenport Iowa's murdered founding father fur trader/Indian agent/frontiersman Colonel George Davenport 1783-1845 and was himself a wealthy banker real estate entrepreneur and mayor of Davenport during the Civil War. On the check's verso Weyerhaeuser signs boldly adding "pat to the Order / of H C Putnam" above. Below this Putnam then signs. Henry Cleveland Putnam 1832-1912 was a Wisconsin lumber baron and philanthropist one of the founders of Eau Claire. Three more unidentified persons also sign below Putnam. Twenty-five thousand dollars was a huge sum of money in 1881. Real estate developer Davenport and Weyerhaeuser who also served on the board of directors of this bank surely had many and complex business dealings -- as Weyerhaeuser likewise also had with fellow lumber baron Putnam. Weyerhaeuser's syndicate was vast and he had arrangements with a large number of other lumber businesses. It's possible the transaction had to do with the purchase of timber lands but this warrants further research. In any case a unique and intriguing document. unknown‎
