‎Unsigned Color Photograph / Autograph Note Signed / Typed Note Signed‎

‎This Oglala Lakota Sioux actor and Indian rights activist the nephew of legendary Sioux warrior Crazy Horse appeared in many silent Western films of the teens and '20s; he was discovered in 1893 by Buffalo Bill Cody at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where he was recruiting for his Wild West Show and began at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago at one memorable appearance in London in 1905 Red Fox "scalped" King Edward VII in a stagecoach robbery scene. Three items: First a color postcard photograph of Red Fox 3" X 5" n.p. n.y. Fine. Half-length portrait of the Chief in old age in full Native American dress. Sent out by Red Fox to admirers with printed text on verso noting "Chief William Red Fox is a living page from history. He recalls the Custer Massacre led by his Uncle Crazy Horse." Second an ANS from the Chief's wife Georgia Red Fox. On the inside message panel of a color printed 3" X 6". Fine. Below a printed Christmas message she boldly pens "Georgia Red Fox / God bless you and / Keep you. / All our love to / you" in blue ballpoint. Tell the children to keep up their faith in God in their country and in you sir. They are sure to come through their darkest periods with these attitudes." Signed boldly in full in blue ballpoint. ‎AICARD Jean 1848 1921‎

‎Autograph Manuscript Signed‎

‎This well-known French poet novelist and playwright was elected member of the Acadmie franaise in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS 20pp rectos only. 8" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1890. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean" penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft for it contains crossouts insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909" although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy of further research. hardcover‎

TLS 1p 6 3/4" X 9" Washington DC 1956 February 13. Addressed to Bruno J. Gianetti. Very good. Single 1" scotch tape stain not affecting text and mounting traces on verso. On Federal Communications Commission letterhead a fun letter to the parents of a boy named George: "By George I think you have a Capitol idea even though I make no claim to fame. If I can improve as much as your little George grows in stature by the time he is old enough to understand your book his name could be mor exemplary. At least you have furnished me with an additional incentive to not let George do it alone. I have a son named George too who is also working to add meaning to the name. Since I understand George whether large or small I know that your George will get my message because he is wired for sound too." Bold full signature in blue fountain pen. This invoice on lined stock features McKesson & Robbins elaborate letterhead "Importers and Wholesale Dealers in Drugs Chemicals Paints Dyes & c." at the top and lithographed likeness of the company's headquarters at "Nos. 91 & 93 Fulton St. and 82 & 84 Ann St." at left. ‎RIVINGTON James 1724 1802‎

‎Autograph Document Signed / Unsigned Portrait‎

‎This English-born American bookseller and publisher was controversial during the American Revolution for his suspected Tory sympathies especially since he published the "New York Gazetteer" even returning to England briefly early during the war; but it's believed he was actually a spy for the Americans and smuggled messages to General Washington printed on thin paper bound into the covers of books. ADS 2pp separate leaves 7 3/4" X 6" and 7 3/4" X 7" New York NY 1789 September 10-11. Very good. Mild bit of age toning slight bit of soiling. First leaf in Rivington's hand records a real estate transaction verbatim with line breaks included: "James Rivington & wife / to / Benj: Moore / deed & Release Sept: 10 & 11 1789. / Recd. -- Lib:45. p529 -- & Lib:46. p221. -- / 16 ac. 2 roads & 32 paas.-- Between Green- / -wich Road & the River -- South of / Mary Clarke's land. --" The second leaf in another and neater hand notes: "Abstract of Title to two Lots of Ground on the North-Easterly side of Twenty first Street in the 12th Ward of the City of New York distinguished on the plot beneath by the numbers 1 & 2." Below this is a well-drafted plat map showing land parcels between "9th Av." at left "8th Ave." at right "22d St" at top and "21. St." at bottom -- with the two lots in question here neatly marked "1" and "2" in the lower right area of this block. The purchaser here was Bishop BENJAMIN MOORE 1748-1816 the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and president of Columbia College -- best remembered as the father of Clement C. Moore 1779-1863 the scholar who penned the immortal poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1823. Bishop Moore and his son owned a number of properties in this area mostly in the Chelsea Historic District slightly north of the two lots he purchased from Rivington. A scarce document with interesting connections. Accompanied by a superb and itself scarce vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 7" X 10" n.p. n.y. mid-19th century. Fine. A bold and handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of Rivington gazing intently at the viewer looking rather like Washington himself engraved by A.H. Ritchie. unknown‎

From the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. ‎CHARLES IX 1550 74‎

‎Document Signed‎

‎When France's King Henry II died in 1559 and his sickly 15-year-old heir Francis II followed the next year the throne went to 10-year-old Charles Maximilian who became Charles IX; his mother Catherine de' Medici dominated his reign which is noted for the Wars of Religion and for the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. Partial vellum DS 1p 11" X 8" n.p. n.y. September 1570 lightly pencilled in another hand. Very good. Folds and mild bit of wear evident but overall handsome and boldly penned. Below six lines of finely penned legalese Charles signs at left with his usual enormous signature in a different and somewhat lighter ink. Below this appears another sentence in a large flamboyant hand which appears to refer to Provence and huge ornate signature of an official. This atmospheric piece has been archivally free-floated against a cream matte with a surrounding raised cream matte framed in a contemporary 1" walnut frame overall dimensions 18" X 16".
