‎[Ownership Signatures And Long Manuscript Observations By Carl Oscar Borg]‎

‎Royal Academy Pictures And Sculpture 1909 With Handwritten Manuscript Meditation By Carl Oscar Borg‎

‎London: Cassell and Company 1909. First Edition . Green Cloth Gilt. Near Fine. Plates Throughout. 160 Pp. Green Cloth Gilt. Clean Example Of The 1909 Issue Gilt Brilliant Notable For The Long Prose Meditation By Carl Oscar Borg Which He Has Written And Signed On The Recto Of The Frontispiece: "Yellow Leaves: Yellow Leaves Our Best And Brightest Thoughts Are They. The Deeds And Dreams Of Our Youth. A Sweet Sadness Emanates From Them As Trhe Shadows Fall Deeper And Deeper And The Wings Of Silence Hover Over The Past. Yellow Leaves Moving Against The Evening Sun's Last Flickering Light You Are Like A Sweet Melody Played By A Hand Gently Caressing The Golden Strings Or A Song Sung By A Poet When First His Soul Knows The Terrible Truth Of Life And Is Overflowing With Silent Sorrow And Unspeakable Joy. Yellow Leaves Falling Through The Clear Lights Of Evening To Mingle With The Cold And Dark Dust Of Earth You Are Like Our Own Tired Souls That Are Seeking Rest In The Dreams Of Nirvana; Or Like The Spirit Of Fire We Have Drawn From The Heights Of The Ideal The Holy Fire That Has Died -- No Not Died As Yet Still It Glows In The Fading Light Like All Of Our Dosappointed Hopes Our Shattered Illusions -- You Glow And Shine Against The Sky Like Crowns Of The Blessed Against The Virgin's Dark Blue Mantle And So Is Even Your Death A Death Of Beauty. Yellow Leaves In The Yellow Forest Of Life Roads And Paths Are Hidden Under Your Golden Mantle And When The Winds Are Moving Among The Trees It Is The Memories Of The Past Pale Legends Of Our Dead Loves Of Our Sorrows And Our Joys That Are Singing Their Meloncholy Tales With Soft And Inspiring Voices. Carl Oscar Borg Los Angeles. July 1910". Also With Borg's Earlier Ownership Signature On The Front Free Endpaper Dated Los Angeles 1909. Probably A Gift To The Sculptor Julia Bracken Wendt Or Her Husband William Wendt And Then A Gift To The Artist Pasquale Giovanni Napolitano Who Apparently Owned It Since The 1920'S Or 1930'S.

Cassell and Company hardcover‎

‎Andrade, E N da C [signed By Robert F Bacher]‎

‎The Structure of the Atom‎

‎New York 1923: Harcourt Brace & Co. 1923. First American Edition . Blue Cloth. Very Good. 314 Pp. First Printing. This Is Andrade's First Book Originally Published In England In 1923 Intended As An Introduction To Atomic Structure For The "Serious Student". Andrade Was Quain Professor Of Physics At The University Of London 1928-1950 And A Highly Honored Historian Of The Physical Sciences. This Copy Signed By Robert F. Bacher And Dated In April 1925 While Bacher Was A Student. Bacher Later Followed Hans Bethe To Cornell In 1935 Where He Started Doing Experimental Work In Nuclear Physics With Bethe And Left Theoretical Work Behind. He Was Quickly Promoted To Full Professor And Director Of The Laboratory Of Nuclear Studies. Early On He Had Felt That The United States Needed To Start Doing War Work And When Lee Dubridge Head Of The Radiation Lab Working On Radar At Mit Summoned Him There In 1941 He Went. Then Late In 1942 Oppenheimer Who Had Been One Of Bacher's Instructors Earlier At Caltech Approached Bacher About A New Lab For Nuclear Weapons Work That Was Just Starting Up And The Following Spring Asked Him To Join The Manhattan Project. Bacher Declined Initially Telling Oppenheimer That What He Needed Was Engineers. Ultimately When Oppenheimer Made A Commitment To Hiring More Engineers And Made Him Head Of The Experimental Physics Division Bacher Signed On. From The Beginning Bacher Was Firmly Opposed To Making Los Alamos A Military Lab And Persuaded Oppenheimer Who Had Agreed To Take A Commission As Lieutenant Colonel And Had Already Ordered His Uniforms To Keep It Under Civilian Control At Least Until They Had Enough Fissionable Material For A Bomb. When The Project Was Reorganized In July 1944 To Speed Work On Implosion Bacher'S Experimental Physics Division Was Split And He Was Put In Charge Of The G For "Gadget" The Code Name For The Bomb Division. Bacher Personally Escorted The First Bomb To The Test Site In July Of 1945. In 1946 He Was Awarded The President'S Medal For Merit For His Work On The Manhattan Project. Bacher Returned To Cornell Hoping To Get Back To High-Energy Physics But The Bomb'S Aftermath Continued To Involve Him. He Felt Strongly That There Should Be Some Sort Of International Control Of Atomic Weapons And Worked Hard On Negotiations With The Soviet Union. He Admitted In His Oral History That This Was Perhaps Idealistic But Thought That Getting This Technology Out In The Open Might Have Avoided The Subsequent Cold War. When The Atomic Energy Commission Was Established Bacher Served As The Only Scientist Among Its Members; He Had Tried To Decline The Post But Took It On When He Learned That There Would Be No Scientist At All If He Didn'T Accept. While A Member Of The Aec He Pushed For The Development Of Nuclear Submarines And Breeder Reactors For Commercial Power. In The Meantime Lee Dubridge Now President Of Caltech Offered Him A Position As Chairman Of The Division Of Physics Mathematics And Astronomy Or As Just A Professor Whichever He Preferred. "The Decision I Came To Was A Fateful One And Probably Illustrates A Major Failing In My Makeup" Bacher Said In The Oral History. What He Saw As A Major Failing In His Makeup Was In Fact A Superb Talent For Envisioning The Future And Leading The Institute Into It. After Getting A Commitment That The Institute Would Support A Program In High-Energy Physics Both Theoretical And Experimental Bacher Arrived In 1949. One Of His First Hires In High-Energy Physics Was Robert Walker Whom He Had Known At Los Alamos And Cornell. Another Of Bacher'S Early Recruits Was Richard Feynman Who Was Reportedly Feeling "Unsettled" At Cornell; Bacher Persuaded Him To Sign On At Caltech With A Sabbatical Year In Brazil In Between. Feynman Then Settled In Pasadena In 1951 For The Rest Of His Career. Now With Feynman And Robert Christy Who Had Come In 1946 Bacher Felt He Had The Two Most Outstanding Theorists From Los Alamos. Then In 1955 He Also Hired Murray Gell-Mann.

Harcourt Brace & Co. hardcover‎

I Have A Feeling I Shall Be Over In The States If This Goes On. Yesterday I Received A Copy Of The Griffin Reader's Subscriptions Inc. With An Article By Jacques Barzun No Less On E. M. Forster's Hill Of Devi. He Said 'With Mr. Reginald Reynolds' A Quest For Gandhi Which Is Its Perfect Autobiographical Counterpart The Hill Of Devi Is The Best Introduction To The Physical And Emotional Realities Of Modern India". ‎No date or place but likely the LBJ Ranch Stonewall Texas ca. 1968. Original color photographic print 10.75" x 7.5" on 14" x 11" card mount; in gallery mat. Inscribed on mount beneath photo: "For Deke De Loach / with appreciation for his dedicated service" signed in Johnson's hand undated. Mild surface abrasions to image; mild soil to mount; photographer's serial stamp to verso of mount "5 JY 68 D897-35." Photographer unidentified but based on location and outfit likely taken during a 1968 photo session at the LBJ Ranch by Frank Wolfe LBJ's official White House photographer. An attractive large-format professional portrait of LBJ in casual dress kneeling in a pasture with his trademark Stetson resting on his knee. An excellent association; Cartha "Deke" De Loach was Deputy Associate Director of the FBI during the Hoover era and a close associate of LBJ's; in 1963 immediately after the assassination of John F. Kennedy Johnson had De Loach assigned to permanent duty at the White House. As described by New York Times reporter Tim Weiner "De Loach was always at L.B.J.'s beck and call night and day he was a talented political hatchet man a trusted deputy to Hoover. He was also crucial to intelligence investigations conducted during the Johnson presidency." Based on the tenor of the inscription we surmise that the portrait was presented to De Loach at the end of Johnson's presidency in 1968. unknown‎

Mailing folds; slightly toned at margins; Very Good. Regarding the recipient's letter to the Reader's Digest of September 24 Eastman had been hired as an editor for the conservative publication earlier in the same year. The subject appears to be the institution of the death penalty in the Soviet Union: ".Nobody questions the fact that the death penalty was decreed for theft of 'socialist property' and the extension of all penalties to children twelve years old automatically extends that one. I am sorry to say I can not tell you offhand when the previous decree was issued but I think it was the Spring of 1934. unknown‎

Also In 1911 He Starting Building The Eltinge Theatre On 42Nd Street Named For One Of His Most Successful And Profitable Stars The Female Impersonator Julian Eltinge. By May 1911 A Run Of The Fascinating Widow Starring Eltinge At The Boston Theatre Was Expected To Have Receipts Of $500000 By The Time It Finished. From C1912 He Took Over The Leases Of A Large Number Of Berlin Theatres Including What Became The Ufa-Palast Am Zoo To Put On 'Kino-Vaudeville' Shows A Mix Of Variety Acts Imported From The Us Interspersed With Silent Films. He Was Also Involved With The American Millionaire Joe Goldsoll In The Building Of The German Capital's First Free-Standing Purpose-Built Cinema The Ufa-Pavillon Am Nollendorfplatz. When He Became Successful Woods Continued To Emphasize His Humble Roots And Was Known For His Folksy Manner With Everyone. He Greeted Patrons At The Eltinge As "Sweetheart". Upon Being Introduced To King George V Woods Addressed The Monarch Who Was Older Than Him As "Kid" And Took The Opportunity To Promote One Of His Productions Declaring It To Be "A Regular Show". Woods Was At His Peak In The 1920S Producing Such Hits As Ladies' Night 1920 The Demi-Virgin 1921 The Green Hat 1925 The Shanghai Gesture 1926 Filmed In 1941 And The Trial Of Mary Dugan 1927. However He Lost Most Of His Fortune In The Early 1930S And Never Fully Recovered. In The 1930S His Only Major Hits Were Five Star Final 1930 And Night Of January 16Th 1935. When Woods Staged The Sheldon Davis Comedy Try And Get It In August 1943 Critics Expressed Hope That It Would Revive His Flagging Career But It Closed In Less Than A Week. It Was His Final Production. Although Woods Continued To Read Scripts And Attempt To Generate Interest He Was Unable To Stage Any Productions After 1943. He Died On April 24 1951 In His Residence At The Hotel Beacon In New York. The Once Wealthy Former Producer Ended His Life Bankrupt. After A Memorial Service Attended By Many Prominent Theater Personalities His Remains Were Cremated. Woods Produced A Number Of Bedroom Farces Which Critics And Local Authorities Often Saw As Pushing The Boundaries Of Propriety. In Several Instances Woods Encountered Legal Troubles As A Result.

Samuel French hardcover‎
