RIDDELL Robert 1755 1794
Autograph Letter Signed
This captain in the Royal Scots was multi-talented: amateur archaeologist musician composer editor "A Collection of Scotch Galwegian and Border Tunes for Violin and Pianoforte" 1794. A close friend of the legendary Scottish poet Robert Burns who once wrote of Riddell: "At their fire-side I have enjoyed more pleasant evenings than at all the houses of fashionable people in this country put together: and to their kindness and hospitality I am indebted for many of the happiest hours of my life." Burns' poem "Extempore to Captain Riddell on Returning a Newspaper" aptly depicts their camaraderie while his poem "Sonnet on the Death of Robert Riddell of Glenriddell and Friars' Carse" shows his deep sense of loss at Riddell's early death. ALS 1p 7" X 9" Felton Park Scotland n.y. March 16. Very good. Minor age toning to edges. Cryptic reading in part: "You are perfectly at liberty to put my name to the Petition and address to the P.R. I fear it will be of no avail at the present. We must wait some years as yet before we obtain our wishes." "P.R." presumably means Prince Regent but the nature of this group's grievance remains unknown. Riddell declines to attend their meetings noting that "It is not at all likely I should attend being at the distance of 300 miles." Interesting and unusual. unknown

ARMSTRONG Louis 1900 71
Printed Document Signed
The beloved and influential jazz trumpeter and gravel-voiced singer appeared in many films most notably "Pennies from Heaven" 1936 "The Glenn Miller Story" 1954 and "Hello Dolly" 1969. One of the most bizarre Satchmo items we've handled -- and we've handled a lot: a printed DS 1p 8" X 11" n.p. n.d. ca. 1966. Very good. Small yellow tape stain at each corner. Mimeographed letter headlined "SATCHMO SEZ." in which Armstrong raves at length about the medicinal benefits of his two favorite laxatives "Swiss Kriss" and "Bis Ma Rex." Armstrong was known to have been excessively fond of laxatives from an early age and in later years became a devotee and practically a walking billboard for these two brands going so far as to hand out sample packets to friends and fans. He mentions "Swiss Kriss" several times his memoir noting that he came up with an open letter to fans about these products. Offered here is a signed copy of this very same letter. Along the top edge he boldly writes in his characteristic green ink "To Donald M. Burnell / from Louis Armstrong." Then vertically down the blank left margin he signs again large and bold. The printed text reads in part: "How to take Swiss Kriss -- the Satchmo Way . Take a teaspoonful of Swiss Kriss ever night when going to bed. People who suffer with gas -- cancer -- and ulcers should at least take a broken dose of Swiss Kriss religiously every night for the rest of their lives." About Bis Ma Rex Satchmo preaches: "Gas is an awful thing to have . If you can -- always keep B.M.R. around the house . It is good for many many things . and all illnesses come from the stomach. There's no such thing as an overdose." He also points out: "There's no business interest between me and these two companies. I buy my Swiss Kriss and Bis Ma Rex the same as anybody else. For three years I thought I had Ulcers . And it wasn't a'thing but Gas. It actually thrills me to be able to 'Hipp' my Public to what's 'Happening in the "Gas Section"' . Yeah . " He continues in this jazzy colloquial fashion for some time of course concluding with "Merry Swiss Kriss and Happy Bis Ma Rex." Fascinating and strange. Accompanied by a fine 8" X 10" glossy black and white photograph of Armstrong playing eyes gazed upward. unknown

SMITH William A. 1918 89
Autograph Note Signed / Unsigned Booklet
This American artist is often remembered for his friendship with Carl Sandburg which resulted in his striking 1968 U.S. postage stamp; other stamps include his award-winning 1972 "Sidney Lanier" and the 4-stamp 1973 series "Rise of the Spirit of Independence." ANS 1p 8" X 11" Pineville PA 1973 October 9. Addressed to Mr. Johnston. Near fine. Two horizontal mailing folds. Friendly "Thank you for your gratifying reaction and comment on my stamp designs." in Smith's handsome calligraphic hand. No doubt refers to his award-winning 4-stamp "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamps which had been released the previous month. Accompanied by a stunning 4pp heavy stock 8" X 11" color leaflet issued in 1953. Near fine. Smith's 1978 centennial "Carl Sandburg" stamp which shows a left-facing Sandburg in profile was based on a charcoal portrait made much earlier showing a right-facing Sandburg published here for the first time in 1953 -- a full quarter century before its stamp appearance! The front cover of this glossy leaflet features this portrait which once open pages 2 and 3 shows on the lefthand side a manuscript fair copy of Sandburg's then-new poem "Names" in his distinctive script dated from Connemara Farm Flat Rock North Carolina 25 December 1952. The righthand side shows the same text beautifully typeset. Rear leaf page 4 indicates "First publication of CARL SANDBURG'S most recent poem" and "Some time ago we asked Mr. Sandburg for permission to print this poem as a keepsake for his seventy-fifth birthday party." Thus this booklet represents the true first appearance of this well-known poem which begins: "There is only one horse on the earth / and his name is All Horses. / There is only one bird in the air / and his name is All Wings. / There is only one fish in the sea / and his name is All fins." Though no publisher is cited on this bibliographically-challenged printed piece the publisher was perhaps Broadcast Music Inc. of New York -- whose president and founder Carl Haverlin was an old friend of Sandburg's and was instrumental in organizing the celebrations honoring his friend's 75th. Sandburg at that time was at the height of his fame and these fetes garnished much press coverage. It's not known how many of these booklets were produced but likely a modest number for private distribution to friends and colleagues. A superb letter and scarce printed keepsake. unknown

FOX Fontaine Talbot Jr. 1884 1964
Signature and Salutation
This pioneering American cartoonist created the syndicated comic strip "Toonerville Folks" which appeared in newspapers across the country from 1913 to 1955. Signature and salutation 1p 7" X 1 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1940. Very good. Unusual: After penning "Sincerely" in brown ink the artist then pens his usual "F. Fox" signature -- which he then crosses out with two horizontal lines! Then below this he pens a large bold "Fontaine Talbot Fox Junior." Apparently an admirer requested the artist to sign his name in full -- which Fox remembered to do only after first signing his usual shortened signature. A most unusual and desirable double signature. unknown

STODDERT Benjamin 1751 1813
Autograph Letter Signed
This Revolutionary War patriot acted on Washington's behalf to secure large lots of land in the District of Columbia area before the center of government was formally established there then served as the first secretary of the navy 1798-1801. ALS 1p 7 3/4" X 10" n.p. n.y. Addressed to JOHN TEMPLEMAN a Georgetown merchant associated with Stoddert in various land enterprises. Very good. Mildly age toned with binding traces down left edge not affecting text. Interesting if cryptic details on some Georgetown real estate dealings in Stoddert's usual difficult script reading in part: "Col Burrows has commenced 3 Houses on two lots which Scot will not transfer without a person to get two lots already divided to him in the sale square. these are No. 9 & 10. Pray then send an order to Forrest to transfer to Scot these two lots. As for the rest -- I believe the business is not to be settled without a Law suit -- a Law suit which will not end during the lives of the Parties who commence it." One Stoddert letter to Templeman in the federal archives concerns different investors interested in Georgetown real estate; though undated it likely dates from late 1804 -- which time period is also likely for this letter which is otherwise dated simply "Friday morning." Most unusual most desirable. unknown
