Age toning from long-ago newspaper clipping to large upper right area. On pictorial Salvation Army letterhead the Baronet boldly pens that he has never met a mannamed "Hal Marten" that Marten is seeking and suggests "You might write to the Cattle Raisers Association. it is very hard to trace a man in the West." Horn gave this lovely address as president of the University of Rhode Island before the Rhode Island General Assembly on February 12th Lincoln's birthday. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from him 1p 5�" X 8�" Kingston RI 1960 February 23. Addressed to Arnold Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Fine. "I am sending you my address on Lincoln at the request of Charles O'Neill" writes Horn. ".He is particularly interested in the paragraph at the bottom of page 3. I am hoping that the Rhode Island legislature will take action on my suggestion." Which consists of: "Lincoln's two addresses in Rhode Island are of such significance in our history that I hope the State will both commemorate the occasions with some ceremony on the centennial anniversary and mark with a suitable plaque or monument the places where these historic addresses were delivered." Signed boldly in full in black ink. Horn 1908-99 was an educator who served as president of this university from 1958 to 1967 and spearheaded many advancements for that institution. This newspaper journalist turned novelist and magazine writer authored "Almanzar" 1918 "The Chinese Label" 1920 and "The Road to San Jacinto" 1936 before becoming director of the Texas Writer's Project of the federal Works Project Administration during the Depression in which capacity he largely authored the 1940 "Texas: A Guide to the Lone Star State"; not to be confused with other Texas writers whose names begin with "J. Frank" Dobie Norfleet Norris. Two items: First a TNS 1p 7�" X 10�" San Antonio Texas 1923 January 9. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Fine. In response to a request for a working manuscript page Davis notes: "The short story whose first page it is was scheduled the last I heard for publication in Hearst's International in the February number which will be out about the twentieth of this month." Boldly signed. Second a TMS 1p 8�" X 11" San Antonio Texas 1923 January. Near fine. Titled "Daniel Five Times" this neat double spaced typescript opens with "Colonel Rebel Lee Singleton whose name places his birth as not later than Reconstruction Days came out through the main doorway of the Federal Building to face across the palm-ornamented expanse of Alamo Plaza and paused on the upper step as he observed a haphazard meeting of friends on the sidewalk below him and not ten yards away." Several small minor pencilled corrections. Across the top he has inscribed and signed boldly in black fountain pen: "For Mr. Albert Johannsen with the good wishes of J. Frank Davis" along with place and date. An attractive and unusual pair. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

The top panel titled "Mr. Hoover completes his geographical education" depicts Hoover standing between a bookcase with volumes labeled "North America" "Europe" "Far East" "Asia" and "Africa" and a table with a lamp on it reading a large volume titled "South America." The middle panel titled "A new topic monopolizes dinner table conversation" depicts a tableful of well-dressed ladies and gents encircling a lady discussing stocks; to the far left at this table sits a lone lady labeled "Prohibition" and to the right sits a lone lady labeled "Florida Boom." Beneath his signature Chapman has typed in a little mini-biography: "Assistant Secretary of the Interior May 4 1933 / Succeeded to Under Secretary / Succeeded to Secretary of the Interior." With original envelope. Accompanied by a superb original black-and-white glossy 1953 news agency photograph International News Photo 9" X 7". Original mimeographed newsprint text sheet present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Washington Conference" this vintage image shows Chapman seated at a desk with another gentleman poring over an open notebook. Text reads "With inauguration day moving ever closer key men in the Eisenhower administration-to-be have been conferring with men in the Truman administration whose posts they will take over. Governor Douglas MacKay. the Secretary of Interior-designate is shown in conference with Interior Secretary Oscar Chapman in Washington yesterday." This English author wrote poetry "The Influence of Nature and Poetry on National Spirit" 1814 and a wide variety of nonfiction such as "The Book of the Seasons" 1831 "The Popular History of Priestcraft" 1833 bestseller "The Student Life of Germany" 1841 and "The History of the Super-natural in all Ages and Nations" 1863; with his wife the noted poet and translator Mary Bothem they co-authored "The Literature and Romance of Northern Europe" 1852 and "Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain" 1864; in 1852 he spent two years in the Australian goldfields with his sons producing "A Boy's Adventures in the Wilds of Australia" 1854 and two other volumes. ALS 3pp 4�" X 7" Highgate England 1863 March 20. Addressed to C. Bathurst Woodman grandson of Charles Bathurst apprentice and later publisher with Benjamin Motte Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope's publisher. Near fine. Intriguingly cryptic contents about a scroll of some sort: "It was very thoughtful of you to mention Whittington's tome but I was already aware of it not being the original one. With respect to Mr Hume and the scroll I am sorry that you had not time to home with him when he would be in or he studies it seems at University College and would be about in the day. I am sure he will have much pleasure any time that you are in Town in showing the scroll to you but I very much doubt whether he would sell it. At all events your purpose if you become the purchase of restoring it to the is very honorable to you." Interesting and worthy of further research. unknown
