‎Bug-eyed walrus-mustachioed American comedian and musician remembered for his Bob Hope USO appearances overseas; films include several of the Hope-Crosby "Road" pictures. Asked to compose a humorous verse by an admirer Colonna manages a two-line ditty in his large bold script: "To Donald Burnell / I can't even spell / Jerry Colonna" in blue ballpoint roughly rectangular 4 3/4" X 4" slip n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Good plus. Several small scotch tape stains at edges slightly touching upon two letters only. Despite flaw a fun and fairly attractive item. Comes with a delightful 10" X 8" glossy black-and-white a still scene from the 1944 musical romance film "Atlantic City" showing Colonna and co-star Constance Moore on the Atlantic City beach in 1915 he in naval seaman's uniform ogling her in swimsuit. "Miss Ahern" was Mary Eileen Ahern 1860-1938 another of "American Libraries" "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century" an inventive leader in the modern library movement as influential as Mann; in 1931 she gave up her 36-year-long editorship of "Libraries" magazine due to failing eyesight and Day undertook some fundraising to aid the aging librarian. ‎The third editor of the "New York Tribune" the first being Horace Greeley the second Whitelaw Reid joined that venerable publication in 1876 and was named editor-in-chief in 1905 serving until 1913. On a clipped 5 3/4" X 2" slip the editor boldly pens in black fountain pen: "With best wishes for your / prosperity and happiness / I am / Very sincerely Yours / Hart Lyman." Near fine. Two pinholes at upper left not affecting text. Also present is the similarly-sized masthead from the same letterhead sheet the inscription was clipped bearing a printed "New York Tribune" and dated by Lyman 9 January 1910. unknown‎

‎Florida senator 1936-51 and representative 1963-89 who as the oldest member of Congress pushed through legislation outlawing a mandatory retirement age. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1969 June 30. Addressed to Richard C. Laade. Near fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead Pepper agrees to a request from an admirer. Accompanied by a fine original glossy 8½" X 6½" black-and-white news agency photograph showing then Senator Pepper on the steps of the Capitol at a political gathering. Printed caption affixed to verso dates this 27 June 1947 captions it "Townsendites Renew 'Assault' on Capital Hill" and describe the scene: "Townsendites here for the 7th Annual Townsend Plan National Convention converged on Capitol Hill this morning to urge Congress to pass the Townsend National Prosperity Plan Bill which is now before the House for the 13th successive year. Photo shows left to right: Senator Claude Pepper D of Fla.; Dr. Francis E. Townsend 80-year-old creator of the pension plan." The old-age pension scheme of this physician and activist 1867-1960 sprang up during the Great Depression and while it never passed it did prove influential when Congress devised the Social Security system. unknown‎
