WHITMAN, Bert (1908-90)
Signed Postal Cover
This California editorial cartoonist for the "Stockton Record" also created the short-lived comic strip "Debbie Dean" which was censored and ceased in 1944 for using the word "dope " in one installment. Signed Postal cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Five Points California on 22 January 1979. Fine. Single 10-cent "It All Depends on Zip Code" stamp and 6-cent "Cherokee Strip" stamp at upper right. An enterprising collector filled the entire leftmost 3/4ths of this cover with an actual daily editorial cartoon 4½" X 3½" titled "Things to Come" and quite intentionally chose the place of cancellation "Five Points" as in 5-digit postal code and the 10-cent zip code stamp. Late in 1978 the post office announced the addition of four digits to the existing 5-digit zip codes. In this cartoon a bald-headed man Whitman himself holds up an envelope bearing a miniscule recipient's name/address and a HUGE two line zip code running from one end of the envelope to the other. The stamp on this envelope cost "$5" and the cancellation reads "U.S.A. 1999." In the small blank portion of the cover at lower right Whitman signs boldly in black fineline. Whitman's prediction for the future of mail delivery didn't come true of course. Highly unusual piece. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. unknown

Typed Letter Signed
This physicist served as the second director of the National Bureau of Standards 1923-32 and is highly regarded for his work in standardizing light and temperature scales. TLS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1927 November 2. Addressed to Samuel W. Stratton 1861-1931 creator and first director of the Bureau of Standards. Very good. Lightly age toned. On Department of Commerce letterhead Burgess writes his predecessor in his capacity as president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a bizarre subject: "We appreciate very much the splendid spirit of cooperation which our representatives. received during their recent visit to your Institute in connection with the laundry deterioration problem. your Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry were particularly kind in lending every possible effort to aid us in this study." Talk about airing your dirty laundry. Unusual. unknown

BRINKLEY, David (1920-2003)
Signed Postal Cover / Photograph
Highly-regarded American broadcast journalist who hosted NBC's "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" with Chet Huntley 1956-70 and ABC's "This Week with David Brinkley" 1981-98 among other things. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Wilmington North Carolina on July 10 1969. Near fine. 5-cent "Carolina Charter 1663-1963" and 1-cent "Thomas Jefferson" stamps. NOT a First Day Cover and with no engraved cachet at left -- but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on Brinkley's birthday July 10 in his hometown Wilmington -- very cool. No distracting recipient's name/address present -- but Brinkley signs near the "sweet spot" boldly and attractively in blue fountain pen. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. Accompanied by a fine 7" X 9" glossy publicity portrait showing a determined arms-crossed Brinkley in 1984 -- accompanying printed caption notes "ABC News correspondent David Brinkley will share anchor duties with Peter Jennings for 'The '84 Vote' coverage of the Democratic National Convention." A handsome pair. unknown

FONDA Henry 1905 82
Signature and Inscription / Unsigned Photograph
This Hollywood mainstay -- Jane and Peter's pop Bridget's granddad -- excelled at portraying Average Joe heroic characters in such classics as "The Grapes of Wrath" and appeared in many memorable films such as "The Ox-Bow Incident" 1943 "Twelve Angry Men" 1957 and "On Golden Pond" 1981 for which he won an Oscar. Bold "To Donald / All Good Wishes / Henry Fonda" in thick blue fountain pen on an irregular roughly oval-shaped 4" X 2½" slip n.p. n.y. Good plus. In addition to add trimming there are several small scotch tape stains at the edges not affecting signature and only slightly touching the "T" in "To." Accompanied by a superb glossy 8" X 10" publicity photograph from the 1947 film "The Fugitive" a half-length portrait of Fonda in white shirt and tie gazing over the back of the chair in which he's seated. Despite condition and shape a respectable signature example and a fabulous image. unknown
