Hochinteressante Dokumentsammlung aus dem Nachlass des französischen Diplomaten Louis Guy Henri de Valory (Valori), der 1739 als französischer Gesandter an den preußischen Hof kam und dort bis 1750 wirkte, dann 1756 kurzfristig als Botschafter nach Berlin zurückkehrte. Der greise Kardinal und de-facto-Premierminister André Hercule de Fleury hatte den Offizier Valory, der sich im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg ausgezeichnet hatte, nach Preußen geschickt, um am Hofe Friedrich Wilhelms I. die Interessen von Louis XV. zu vertreten; insbesondere sollte er das französisch-preußische Bündnis gegen das Habsburgerreich festigen. Valory entledigte sich seiner Mission erfolgreich: Er wirkte mehrfach auf die preußische Bündnispolitik ein, arrangierte die Ehe zwischen dem Dauphin und Maria Josepha von Sachsen (1747) und zählt zu den Architekten des Friedens von Aachen (1748). Obwohl der Kronprinz Friedrich zunächst wenig von Valory hielt, fand er bald Gefallen an dem so gebildeten wie originellen Kopf, und nach seiner Thronbesteigung als Friedrich II. bezeugte er ihm mehrmals seine Freundschaft. - Zu den vorliegend überlieferten zehn Schreiben Friedrichs des Großen zählen zwei eigenhändige Billetts (davon eines im Umfang von 3 Seiten); ein weiteres weist eine sechszeilige eigenhändige Nachschrift auf (während Friedrichs Bevollmächtigung für Heinrich Graf Podewils zu einem preußisch-französischen Defensivbündnis neben der Unterschrift das wohlerhaltene königliche Lacksiegel trägt). Die meisten dieser Schriftstücke stammen aus dem ersten Jahr des Ersten Schlesischen Kriegs, mehrere sind in Feldlagern verfasst. Bei Valorys Abschied aus Berlin 1750 spricht ihm Friedrich mit warmen Ausdrücken seine Zufriedenheit aus, und bei seiner abrupten Abberufung 1756 widmet er ihm mit eigener Hand die persönlichen Worte: "Après la façon outrageante dont votre cour se comporte envers moi, vous ne trouverez point étrange que je ne réponds point au ministre de France, mais à mon vieil ami. Je suis fâché de votre départ, et vous pouvez être persuadé que je ferai non seulement des vœux pour votre santé, mais encore pour votre fortune. Faites mes compliments à mes amis dans le pays où vous allez, si j'en ai encore. Pour moi, je vois toutes les extravagances qui arrivent, de sang froid, et vous pouvez être persuadé que, bien loin d'en être découragé, ce m'est un nouvel aiguillon qui m'animera à faire l'impossible possible l'année qui vient. Adieu, mon cher Valory, je vous souhaite un heureux voyage. Federic". - Von Minister Podewils liegen sechs teils eigenhändige Schreiben an Valory vor, die von September 1741 bis kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Schlesischen Kriegs reichen. Von französischer Seite enthält der Bestand acht vom König von Frankreich unterschriebene Instruktionen an seinen Gesandten, ferner acht Schreiben Fleurys und eine Fülle weiterer diplomatischer Korrespondenz. Viele Dokumente zur Großmachtpolitik der 1740er bis 1750er Jahre finden sich in zeitgenössischer Abschrift, darunter Verträge und Abkommen, Urkunden Maria Theresias (November 1740), Schreiben des englischen Botschafters Hyndford sowie der berühmte Brief Friedrichs des Großen an den Marquis d'Argens aus Hermannsdorf vom 27. August 1760, aber auch zwei Schreiben der preußischen Königinmutter Sophie Dorothea von Hannover zur Heirat der Prinzessin Luise Ulrike mit dem schwedischen Kronprinzen (1744). Eine Vielzahl älterer Schreiben von Kurfürsten und deutschen regierenden Häusern an das französische Königshaus, verfasst zwischen 1570 und 1632, dürfte Valory nach seiner Rückkehr nach Frankreich in sein Arbeitsarchiv übernommen haben. Angereichert ist die Sammlung um einige spätere Stücke aus dem Besitz der Familie Boyer d'Eguilles (Billetts von Friedrich Wilhelm II., 1795/96). Valory hatte in Preußen Kontakt zur Familie; 1746/47 hatte er sich für die Freilassung von Alexandre-Jean-Baptiste d'Eguilles, Bruder des Marquis d'Argens, aus englischer Kriegsgefangenschaft eingesetzt. Der vorliegende Bestand bildet über weite Strecken die Quellengrundlage für die 1820 erschienenen Memoiren Valorys (Mémoires des négociations du marquis de Valori), in der auch wesentliche Teile publiziert sind. - Residuum der Sammlung Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Schöne und umfangreiche diplomatische Dokumentensammlung, die das preußisch-französische Verhältnis in den letzten Jahren vor dem "Renversement des alliances" abbildet.‎

‎Two pages (207:300 mm). 14 bars on one six-stave system (bars 51-64 of the published edition) for voice, bass, two horns and strings, the text for the aria "Sono le femmine si maliziose [...] nessun per certo le troverà". A fragment of Haydn's "Dice Benissimo". Haydn composed two insertion arias for Antonio Salieri’s dramma giocoso of 1778, "La scuola de' gelosi": one is lost to us, while the present manuscript is a fragment of the aria created for the bass voice of the manservant Lumaca. One of Haydn's many responsibilities as Kapellmeister of the Esterházy family - by 1780 under Nikolaus I - was as director of the opera company, his patron's newest passion as of the mid-1770s. Esterháza Palace was transformed, at the behest of Prince Nikolaus, into an important fixture on the opera calendar, with its theatre routinely hosting multiple productions each year. Not only would Haydn direct and produce the performances, but he would compose his own works, as well as adapting those of other composers - usually choosing dramma giocoso - to suit the forces at his disposal. This often meant composing insertion arias - such as the present work - to suit the voice of a particular singer: around twenty such arias survive, dating from 1777 to 1789, although only a handful are written for bass or tenor. - Remnants of tape at upper, left-hand and bottom margins of recto. Provenance: Professor Theodor Dielitz (presentation and authentication inscription; Dielitz's substantial autograph collection was auctioned by Hartung in Berlin in January 1858), given to a Dr. Pribil as a duplicate, 1 January 1848. Last in the Metropolitan Opera Guild Collection. Not in Hoboken.‎

‎Oblong 8vo. Autograph musical manuscript. 95 pp. (notes in four lines; pp. 96-260 empty systems only), 6 unnumbered leaves of index. Contemporary calf monogrammed in gilt "J. G. N. 1785" on upper cover. Edges sprinkled in red. A rediscovered late work: apparently the final, never completed and never published collection of 78 preludes for Protestant church songs by the highly esteemed J. G. Nicolai (cf. ADB XXIII, 593), who served as the organist at Rudolstadt for nearly forty years. The book must have served him to write down newly composed choral preludes as they were occasioned by the ecclesiastical year. The manuscript begins with "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" for the first Sunday in Advent; Christmastime includes chorals such as "Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her", "In dulci jubilo", and "O Jesulein süß"; Passiontide includes "O Lamm Gottes unschuldig", "Da Jesu an dem Kreuze stund" and "O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß". For Easter, Nicolai wrote preludes to "Christ lag in Todesbanden", "Christ ist erstanden" and "Heut' triumphieret Gottes Sohn", for Pentecost to "Komm heiliger Geist" and "Der heilige Geist hernieder". The abrupt end of the manuscript after "Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren Dank sagen" (19th Sunday after Trinity) is undoubtedly due to the composer's final illness; the last Sundays of the ecclesiastical year are missing, though the lines of the systems have been inked in. - It cannot be determined whether the present series was intended for publication. Nicolai did publish several such collections of preludes, but this might just as well constitute a personal compilation for his own use at church services, as suggested by occasional abbreviated parts with varied figuration, likely indicating improvisation. Nicolai had already published many of the chorals for which we here find preludes in his "Vollständiges Choralbuch über die Fürstlich Schwarzburg-Rudolstädtischen Kirchengesänge" (Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1765). The attribution of the volume is secured by the cover monogram and the watermark (crowned double-headed eagle with the insignia of the Empire, based on the arms of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt). - Binding slightly rubbed and bumped; some worming to lower cover; insignificant browning to interior. ‎Talleyrand-Périgord, Charles Maurice de, French statesman (1754-1838).‎

‎54 x 116 mm. 1 p. Matted. A plain, unpresuming note that probably once accompanied a small hospitality gift, inscribed by one of the most powerful French statesmen of all time to a Founding Father of the United States, reading: "Presented to hon. M. Burr / by M. Talleyrand". The Frenchman's use of English appears to be a polite signal of deference to his American host, for Burr's French undoubtedly would have been more than sufficient to understand the same note in the international language of education and diplomacy, whereas Talleyrand's command of English is largely agreed to have been extremely limited (cf. Earl, p. 290). - Talleyrand's career straddled the Ancien régime, French Revolution and Restoration; he was successively a bishop, a revolutionary who assisted in the drafting of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, an exile in America, and later Foreign Minister to both Napoleon and his successor, the restored Bourbon king, Louis XVIII. Talleyrand had left revolutionary France just before the beginning of the Great Terror on a diplomatic mission to Britain, but earlier French exiles pressured Pitt to expel him to the Republic, where a warrant for his arrest had been issued in the meantime. "A return to France meant certain death, and most of the other countries of Europe were openly hostile to him for the part he had played in the early days of the Revolution. In mid-February, 1794, he booked a passage on the American ship 'William Penn'. He had made up his mind; the United States would be his refuge until such time as France returned to a normal, stable, and reasonable condition" (Earl, p. 282). - In America, Talleyrand settled comfortably into the cosmopolitan society of Philadelphia, the federal capital and a haven for Gallic émigrés. Fortified with his reputation as well as with warm letters of recommendation to Washington, Benjamin Rush and the Hamilton family, the French exile found American drawing rooms open to him, and "from his April arrival until his visit to New York in June, 1794, Talleyrand was hardly ever without an invitation to dinner" (Earl, p. 289). One of his famous hosts was Aaron Burr, two years Talleyrand's junior and then serving as U.S. Senator representing New York. At his Richmond Hill estate in Manhattan, which he had purchased in 1794, Burr "maintained a liberal establishment, and exercised the hospitality which was then in vogue. Talleyrand, Volney, Louis Philippe, and other strangers of distinction, whom the French Revolution drove into exile, were [there] entertained with princely profusion and elegance" (Parton I, p. 154). Burr's biographer Parton reports that Talleyrand was among those with whom the Senator "became particularly intimate" (ibid.), and it is possible that Burr, who like Talleyrand had forsaken theology for politics, sensed in his guest a kindred instinct for nimbly "doubling one's choices" in that ever-shifting world. Indeed, Alexander Hamilton's biographer Chernow describes Burr as an "agile opportunist", a "chameleon who evaded clear-cut positions on most issues and was a genius at studied ambiguity" - a portrait recreated in the words put into his mouth by a recent broadway hit: "Talk less, smile more - don't let them know what you're against or what you're for." The loose friendship between the two statesmen, both notorious womanizers, lasted throughout the Frenchman's American exile: as late as 1796, Parton writes, Talleyrand was among the notabilities invited to a dinner party which Burr gave at his Philadelphia residence for the Mohawk chief Joseph Brant (cf. p. 204). - When the political climate in France changed after the fall of Robespierre and the threat of the guillotine receded, Talleyrand petitioned to the National Convention for permission to return. The intercessions of Madame de Stael and other friends proved successful. "On June 3, 1796, Talleyrand paid a visit to the French Minister to the United States, Pierre Auguste Adet, and received his passport. The last barrier had been hurdled" (Earl, p. 297). On 13 June, Talleyrand left Burr and the United States behind him, sailing back to Europe and an extraordinary career on the Danish vessel "Den Nye Prove" - "The New Enterprise". His host Burr would go on to serve as third U.S. Vice President, though his political career was to be ruined when he famously shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel, eight years hence. When the tables were turned and Burr himself was an exile in France in 1810, the affair proved to have frustrated his hopes of gaining access to Napoleon through his old acquaintance, who had also been a friend of his opponent's: "when Burr requested an interview, Talleyrand rebuffed him with a haughty note: 'General Hamilton's likeness always hangs over my mantle'" (Merrill/Endicott, p. 32). - A slight waterstain. ‎Mit aquarelliertem Titelblatt. 361 meist einseitig num. Bll. mit 36 Einträgen. Lederband d. Zt. mit Rückentitel, goldgepr. Deckelbordüre und Goldschnitt. Qu.-8vo. "Der Freundschaft gewidmet von C. F. Briedenhan". Nicht sonderlich umfangreich geratenes, wohl studentisches Stammbuch mit hübsch illustriertem Titel und handschriftlichem Namensregister. - Anfangs gering fingerfleckig, der Einband berieben und beschabt.‎

‎Stammbuchkassette des Ferdinand Gloede. Hamburg, Stade, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, u. a., 1822 bis 1846.‎

‎Mit 10 meist farbigen Zeichnungen, 1 Haararbeit, 2 Stickereien, 1 Portrait-Silhouette und knapp 70 Einträgen sowie 8 w. Bll. Gelackte Karton-Kassette mit goldgeprägter Deckelbordüre und Rückentitel in Kartonschuber. Qu.-8vo. Wie ein beiliegendes hs. Blatt späteren Datums erläutert, entstammte der Stammbuchhalter einer Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie. Neben den Einträgen von Familienmitgliedern und seiner späteren Frau, Julie Büttner, gibt es etliche freundschaftliche Einträge, die auf See geschrieben oder gezeichnet wurden, nämlich "an Bord der George Canning" und "im atlantischen Ozean. An Bord der Henriette". Der Schreiber Joh. Hinr. Krabbe präzisierte den Ort mit genauen geographischen Koordinaten. Am 19. April 1833 war Gloede wohl nach Rio de Janeiro aufgebrochen, wie der beiliegende gereimte Abschiedsbrief von (H.?) Asmus belegt. Etliche Einträge von 1842 bis 1844 geben Buenos Aires als Ort an. Unter den zahlreichen Hamburger Einträgen ist auch Joao C. Bahlsen genannt. Ein hübsches naives Aquarell zeigt das Treideln eines Bootes; eine Zeichnung mit Schiffsportrait. - Vereinzelt fleckig oder gering gebräunt; der Schuber etwas berieben, die Kassette am Rücken bestoßen und mit kl. Einriß an Kopf und Fuß, Gelenk angebrochen.‎

‎Mit 44 Einträgen (2 davon mit kleinen Zeichnungen) und 2 weiße Bll. Lose in Hldr. mit goldgepr. Deckelbordüren und Monogramm "S. Lange". Qu.-8vo. Neben den Einträgen der verwandten Familien Lange, Heise und Sanders aus Bramsche finden sich acht Einträge aus drei Generationen derer von Stoltzenberg, den Besitzern des ehemaligen Rittergutes Sögeln. Darunter: Amalie von Stoltzenberg, geb. von Pückler, deren Sohn Ernst von Stoltzenberg sowie dessen Tochter Adelheid von Stoltzenberg. - Etwas gebräunt; Deckel etwas aufgebogen, ohne Schuber.‎
