‎EAGLE Don 1925 66 and EAGLE Chief War 1899 1979‎

‎Inscribed Photograph Signed‎

‎Father and son Canadian Native American wrestlers: Chief War Eagle was a moderately successful pro wrestler but his son Don "Marvelous Mohawk" Eagle was one of the greatest box office attractions of the early days of televised wrestling; he won the best-of-three-falls AWA World title in 1950 but had it taken away three days later in a controversial incident during a match with Gorgeous George; he died at age 41 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound an apparent suicide. Extremely unusual oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" n.p. n.d. ca. 1960. Near fine. Handsome matte-finish full-length portrait of a seated Chief War Eagle in full Indian headdress with his son in his Indian-theme wrestling getup sitting on his knee. Across his chest Chief War Eagle inscribes it boldly in blue ballpoint: "Best Wishes / Chief War Eagle." As he writes across an Indian vest with decorative beadwork the contrast is good but not superb. Across his mostly-bare chest Don Eagle also inscribes boldly in blue ballpoint: "Good Hunting / Don Eagle." This most unusual item was likely created for some promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other markings recto or verso. Choice vintage piece from the "Golden Age of Wrestling" -- the pose is well known though it's likely one of a kind in this large format. Very scarce father and son combination. Perfect for display. unknown‎

AQS heavy stock 3" X 2" card tipped to slightly larger brown autograph album leaf n.p. n.y. Near fine. In his usual hurried scrawl that makes the text of this quotation unfortunately illegible Sothern pens two brief lines perhaps "What a - - / love is & etc / Highest Buddha" -- or perhaps not! in a rich brown ink signing "Yrs EH Sothern" as usual. Despite the improbability of an accurate transcription an interesting attractive piece. unknown‎

‎BRINKLEY David 1920 2003‎

‎Signed Postal Cover / Photograph‎

‎Highly-regarded American broadcast journalist who hosted NBC's "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" with Chet Huntley 1956-70 and ABC's "This Week with David Brinkley" 1981-98 among other things. Signed Postal Cover 6" X 3" cancelled in Wilmington North Carolina on July 10 1969. Near fine. 5-cent "Carolina Charter 1663-1963" and 1-cent "Thomas Jefferson" stamps. NOT a First Day Cover and with no engraved cachet at left -- but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on Brinkley's birthday July 10 in his hometown Wilmington -- very cool. No distracting recipient's name/address present -- but Brinkley signs near the "sweet spot" boldly and attractively in blue fountain pen. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. Accompanied by a fine 7" X 9" glossy publicity portrait showing a determined arms-crossed Brinkley in 1984 -- accompanying printed caption notes "ABC News correspondent David Brinkley will share anchor duties with Peter Jennings for 'The '84 Vote' coverage of the Democratic National Convention." A handsome pair. unknown‎

‎WAKELY Jimmy 1914 82‎

‎Signature and Inscription / Unsigned Photograph‎

‎This singer and songwriter a major country star of the '40s and '50s crooned his way through a number of Hollywood shoot-'em-ups in the 1940s; he also had a popular CBS radio show 1952-57. Bold and nice "To Donald Burnell / With good wishes / Jimmy Wakely" penned in purple ballpoint irregular-trimmed roughly rectangular 4" X 2" slip n.p. n.y. ca. 1970. Good plus. Small scotch tape stain at upper left and upper right corner the former touching the "T" the latter touching the last "l" in "Burnell". Accompanied by a choice vintage 10" X 8" sepia-tone glossy photograph a scene from the 1944 Western "Swing in the Saddle" depicting him front and center with singer Jane Frazee the "Hoosier Hotshots" band behind them. Despite condition flaws an uncommon signature -- and a humdinger image. unknown‎

‎BRITTON John 1771 1857‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎One of England's most memorable antiquaries and its foremost architectural critic and historian who practically created the genre authoring and editing such large multi-volume works as "Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain" 1805-14 "Cathedral Antiquities of England" 1814-35 "Architectural Antiquities of Normandy" 1825-27 "Picturesque Antiquities of English Cities" 1830 and others. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 6" n.p. n.y. "Wednesday Morning". Very good. Ever-so-slightly age toned and lightly soiled. Addressed to his old friend William Jerdan 1782-1869 Scottish author and journalist long-time editor of "The Literary Gazette" 1817-51. Certainly writing to Jerdan during his "Literary Gazette" editorship Britton notes in part: "I inclose the first copy of a pamphlet for your acceptance hope you will have an opportunity to read parts of it before your next publication. It is the first prose productions of a young Gentleman who has shewn first rate talents in composition & therefore owe you will be pleased to know more of & I shall have much pleasure to introduce him to you. I am persuaded you will approve of the tone and sentiments of this pamphlet." One wonders what the "prose productions" were and who this "young Gentleman" may have been. Accompanied by an outstanding steel-engraved portrait of Britton 4" X 6" London England 1820. Published by J. Asperne for the 1 April 1820 edition of the "European Magazine" this heavy stock portrait depicts Britton seated at a desk drawing architectural plans with a quill pen as he gazes at the viewer; two volumes of his "Cathedral Antiquities of England" may be seen on the table and rows of books and literary busts fill the background. A nice example of this uncommon autograph and a superb portrait. unknown‎

‎THOMPSON Bradbury 1911 95‎

‎Signed First Day Cover‎

‎This important American graphic designer served as art director for "Mademoiselle" magazine 1945-60; he served on the faculty at Yale University for many years designed "Monalphabet" and other simplified alphabets" and influenced a whole generation of art directors. Signed First Day Cover 6" X 3" cancelled in Franklin Massachusetts on September 12 1980 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 15-cent "Learning never ends" stamp designed by Thompson at upper right. Fine. Typed along the lower margin is: "Bradbury Thompson the veteran stamp designer from Riverside / Connecticut who executed the American Education stamp design / taught with Josef Albers at Yale and also worked with Albers / on a design project in the 1970's." Interestingly the typed text states he worked "under" Albers -- Thompson crossed this word out replacing it with "with"! Above this typed statement just below the cancellation Thompson signs boldly in black ballpoint. With original transmittal envelope addressed to recipient in Thompson's hand and also signed by Thompson at upper left. A great pair -- an uncommon autograph. unknown‎
